heres the fun part, you can flash (install) other roms, modems, kernals, etc that the developers come up with. You could flash google 3.1 right now.
My phone has like 6 roms and 3 modems on it. each rom acts and looks different, is faster or slower. my stock gps didnt work worth crap till i flashed a different modem
secular
How safe is this with respect to backing up partitions!

the clockwork recovery as well any custom recovery. it allows the unsigned .zip that we use to changes roms update and so on., without being stopped by manfacturer security
clockwork its popularity might have come from the awesome rom manager app i believe he is also on the cm team. someone with better knowledge can answer that one.

So im a big noob on modding tablets, and not wanting to brick it I would appreciate the help
So i install this app (already done) then open it up... i have 2 choices install clockwork recovery or install stock USA...... so i install clockwork recovery?
what does this do? lets me install custom 'recovery.img' onto the device such as PRIME 1.4?
so i download PRIME 1.4.zip and inside are 2 folders and boot.img, how do i then go about safely putting PRIME on the device?
sorry for all the questions but everyone's gotta learn sometime ;D
many thanks.

You leave Primed zipped and put it on your SDcard.
You then boot into CWM and select install .zip from SDcard.
Navigate to the file (Prime 1.4) and just select it.
It should then install
Reboot and have lots of new fun!

How do I boot into CWM? like a device reboot, or via the app?
Ok so I installed CWM recovery from the app above.... and moved the PRIME.zip file to my SDcard root but in the app now the "Custom or Stock recovery.img from microSD" is greyed out.
Any ideas how I install PRIME?
I also rebooted the device and managed to boot it into CWM, however when i go to "install zip from sd card" PRIME does not appear in the list, i get DCIM/ and LOST.DIR/
^ My advice is to STOP RIGHT THERE
Don't even THINK about installing Prime until you've read the Prime thread in the development section and UNDERSTOOD WHAT YOU'RE DOING.
Otherwise you WILL KILL YOUR TABLET.
Seriously, newbies shouldn't be doing any of this stuff until you've understood how to do it safely.

Thanks for responding:good:, so I've tried using afterOTA again, although not the usb connection. I was trying to put recovery_twrp_2.1.3-ICS.img with apx mode, it restarted and gave PASS screen, but now is only on this screen, asking "update.zip", already put in external SD: Acer_AV041_A500_1.031.00_WW_GEN1.zip, FLEX-Resurrection_Rev1-Aroma-Public.zip, cwm_hc_ics_root.zip, and nothing.

Because, you still are running a stock rom,. more or less.
The problem happens, because you are re-booting after installing the custom recovery. And the rom you are running, is booting it to stock recovery (it's overwriting your custom recovery) which explains why it's looking for update.zip
What you need to do, is after installing your custom recovery, boot immediately to it Via adb, or shut down and boot using Vol- and PWR. Then install your custom rom.

keep in mind that flashing custom roms and recovery's REQUIRE the unlocked bootloader be flashed FIRST... I'd suggest apxFlash tool to do that....all u need is in civatos bootloader thread, pls read very carefully. do the first 4 steps and then use apxFlash tool to complete the process....if u don't do things exactly as written you'll end up in trouble....
good luck

Hi,
First, I'd like to thank everyone (names unknown) for their time and effort in helping me root my first few cellphones. I've found many helpful posts over the years. Never had a problem.
Now, I have rooted my Sprint Galaxy S4 and installed a custom recovery MDC build. I then installed the OTA update to MF9 which knowingly destroyed root. I have tried several methods to install the custom recovery and root for MF9. When I run Root Checker, it tells me that it may take a little time because the system appears to be running slow. When I use Root Explorer, it won't let me change from r/o to r/w. To me, this means it isn't rooted.
What I am looking for is either a response explaining how to install a working custom recovery and root to my phone or a link to the best method.
Is there an Odin One-click?
I'm having difficulties following this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2277480
I don't want a custom rom just yet.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just use cf auto root in Odin, then use Odin to flash your recovery. The thread is in one of the dev sections. Can't link it just now but it should be easy to find.

First, I am by no means a Mod... but just as a little tip they will tell you questions belong in the question section and move it there where it will get buried. You better off posting future questions there where people often help if they can.
Ok onto your thread.
If you check out these two sections in the thread you linked they should help you. You will want to do the Custom Recovery Flash first then install Chainfire's SuperSU
CUSTOM RECOVERY FLASH
Recovery TWRP. Download this.
DL LINK http://techerrata.com/file/twrp2/jfl...0-jfltespr.tar
About TWRP http://www.teamw.in/project/twrp2
With USB cable NOT connected, turn off your device. Now boot into download mode. (Hold volume down then power...HOLD and WAIT... then volume up to accept message) Now connect USB cable.
Put the TWRP recovery .tar in the same folder on your computer that the Odin execution app is. Right click Odin.exe and click run as administrator. Flash TWRP using PDA mode with auto reboot UNCHECKED. Hit start. When you see RESET or PASS, move on.
Unplug USB cable. Next hold down VOL UP and the POWER button until the device turns off. Keep pressing VOL UP and let go of POWER. When you see the blue "recovery booting" let go of VOL UP. You will then boot into your new recovery. This should work if done correctly. Resore your Data back up if necessary and reboot. It SHOULD realize you are not Rooted and ask you if you want to Root. Select to Root (or not) and your done!
HOW TO ROOT STOCK MF9
You can either Odin flash CFAutoRoot from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2291827
Check here for How To video:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2257101
OR Custom Recovery Flash UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.41.zip from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1538053
Flash UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.41.zip in TWRP or CWM to gain the latest and greatest Root for your S4 from Chainfire!
You should now be rooted with MF9 for the Software version, Baseband version (modem) and Build number.
I am not an expert by any means but I have been through all of this after having my new GS4 for about a week. I, however, updated to MF9 first before doing any rooting or installing any recoveries so I don't know if that would make a difference or not. I first installed Odin 1.85 then downloaded the correct CF Auto Root tar.md5 file and installed that with Odin. It took seconds and worked perfectly. After that I installed Philz Touch CWM-based recovery also with Odin and everything seems to be working like a charm. See below
CF Auto Root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1980683
PhilZ Touch http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2322679

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2257101
Thank you everyone for your help.
I am finally rooted.
I went back to an older stock rom. Then I followed the link in my original post.
Everything went smoothly.
But, Triangle Away doesn't work anymore.
I get the following message:
Could not locate hidden partition or could not detect device model. Are you running Android 4.0 or newer, and are you rooted, and is your device supported?
I uninstalled and reinstalled Triangle Away. Opened it again and got the same message.
I'll search the forums to see if there's an answer.
But once again, thank you for your help and encouragement. Just wish that I had more time to tinker with custom roms!
Additionally, I didn't lose any data throughout the whole process.
Ok, I'm total noob but not complete idiot. Just want to get that out of the way
I have have the Galaxy S4 Google Edition running Android 4.3.
I unlocked the bootloader before the Android 4.3 update, but have never had root access. I've tried motochopper program, but keep getting failure errors and continued no root.
What I'd like to do is restore my device to stock and run it over again. I'm sure I did something wrong at somepoint.
Can someone please help me?
Thanks

1. Go here and download the CWM / TWRP / MobileODIN installable ZIP
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
Place the installable zip on your INTERNAL SD Card.
2. Get CWM:
http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
Go here and grab CWM 6.0.3.6 for the INTERNATIONAL I9505 - yes, it works on the I9505G
Put your phone in fastboot mode by turning off the phone completely. Hold down Vol-Up Vol-Down and power simultaneously.
Since you already seem to have adb, you probably have the fastboot executable.
From your computer's command line type "fastboot boot recovery-clockwork-6.0.3.6-jfltexx.img"
This will boot recovery - temporarily - it will not overwrite the recovery on your phone.
Choose install zip from sdcard. Navigate to the installable zip that you placed on you sdcard in a prior step.
Reboot. When CWM asks to fix "this may overwrite your recovery" SAY NO. Just let it reboot.
You will be rooted. Download and install busybox from the market to complete the process.

Worked like a charm! Only hiccup I had was it wouldn't let me access the file from the SD card, only internal memory.
2nd question is, IF i needed to restore everything to stock again at some point in the future, what steps would I need to take?

Since you have the stock recovery, all you need to do is unroot and you're done. Triangle Away works fine for the I9505G just in case you've bumped you flash counter. Ah yes, search the forums for busybox uninstaller. It's also a flashable zip.
Please hit the thanks button if this helped.

It's installing the custom kernel through adb then installing a recovery (twrp) through adb. After going into recovery (as the phone boots, wait for the notification light to turn orange, it takes about 5-7 seconds, then press and hold the volume up button), flash the SuperSU zip you downloaded from the forum. Now you're rooted.

You would have to install adb, it is used through the command prompt. Installing the Sony flashtool would be really useful, it would install adb for you and you can install firmware updates (since once you root and install a custom ROM, you cannot update through OTA). Once you install all of the Sony drivers needed, your phone would be recognized when in fastboot mode and you can follow the command lines in that thread to install a custom kernel and recovery (twrp) to flash a ROM.

just download the E6883 Boot.img file from above
flash kernel by using FLASHTOOL
http://www.flashtool.net/downloads.php ( click the thunder button >> fastBoot Mode>> select kernel to flash >> it will ask u to connect device while holding volume UP key, (make sure device is switched off) , after deduction it will ask the location of the kernal, point it to the E6883.img file)
and you are DONE!!!!!!!!!
boot your device,
toggle volume up while on WHITE screen (led light goes amber)
you will go recovery,

seems like u downloaded wrong boot.img (kernal)
what is your device???
this kernal is ONLY for .254 update (released 6july2016)
if you have flashed wrong kernal! then DOWLOAD FULL ftf file (2.5GB using FLASHTOOL (experifirm))
and FLASH original .254
than dowload stock modified kernal and flash kernal as i told above...
