Overclock Stock NC 1.4.3 - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been using my NC for a couple of years with various ROMs. I've just pre-ordered the Nexus 7 tablet and will be handing over the NC to my parents. It seems very stable with the current ROM of Phiremod 7.2, but I prefer to give them the full stock experience just in case.
I've downloaded the 1.4.3 update directly from B&N and modified the update-script file so that the update can be flashed via CWM. The only thing I want to know is whether it's possible to overclock the NC after I overwrite the emmc with this update? If so, can it be done via a downloadable app, or does it need a different kernel to be flashed? Also, does the stock experience allow downloads of any app from Google Play, or is it a subset of those apps that have been "approved" by B&N?
Thanks.

Look at post 148 in the same thread you got the information for creating cwm flashable stock for information... or check the customizing roms thread in my signature... I provide the information on how to include the OC kernel in stock .. in fact... its in the rar I posted there... just remove the portions you don't want.

Thanks Dizzy. I saw your 1.4.1 image with the OC kernel but skipped over it since it's not the latest B&N stock image. I'm assuming if I flashed your image and then the B&N stock 1.4.3 that it would overwrite the OC kernel, right?

Yes, but that's why I provided the information in the Customizing ROMs thread... you can download 1.4.3 and modify it as outlined and put the OC kernel into that one before flashing it.

Thank you sir. Ran into a little trouble because of having used Wordpad to edit the file - everything was fine after I converted the CR/LF characters to LF using Notepad++.

Okay, I lied. Not everything is perfect just yet. The image flashed just fine (I included everything except the vold.fstab file). However, the Nook setup hangs while trying to enable wi-fi. I'm thinking it may have something to do with dalingrin's wifi driver fix. Unfortunately, I cannot figure out how to get back into CWM in order to restore my previous ROM and copy a modified image without the wifi fix. I've tried all of the key combinations I can think of.. what's the trick? It always goes to the Read Forever logo followed by the Nook logo into the Setup process.

Usually it is hold power and n on boot up. But I have had problems with that lately. You may have to make a boot able CWM SD card.
edit, you probably wiped out CWM on the flash unless you doctored the install zip.
Sent from my Nook Color running ParanoidAndroid and Tapatalk

I doctored the zip using the steps here. The uAltImg and uAltRam are the CWM files, aren't they? They get put into the /system partition as part of the update-script file I modified. This happens right before /system and /boot are unmounted, so I don't see how they can be overwritten. What am I missing? Gremlins??

The wifi driver ended up being the issue. After I removed it from the zip and reflashed the modified stock 1.4.3 image, the Nook was able to connect to the Wi-Fi successfully. Thanks all.

If you followed those steps... hold Vol + & - when powering up... it will boot into CWM

I knwow this thread is old... but care to share your 1.4.3 overclocked zip?

Sign update.zip

Well, since I have been customizing ROM & kernel for my Nexus one and archos tablet, I have experience in signing .zip files that could be flashed in recovery.
While this Acer machine provides a way for us to flash update.zip by pressing vol- during startup, but I fail to flash a testing update.zip file.
I have made a testing update.zip, sign it, place it in /mnt/external_sd/
But the update.zip seems fail to update due to 'incorrect signature'. Do we need a specific signature other than the normal testsign signature? Let's discuss.

We expect that an Acer specific signature will be needed to sign our updates.

That said the Acer is in the same Situation as the Motorola Milestone was after having root but not enabled to use custom kernels.
A few month later there were customs but they all are stuck to the original kernel with a few modules to optimize the situation.

Do you guys have the stock image for the iconia tab? I need to restore a device, if I restore it it's mine . I need to apply the update.zip from stock.

I'm running into this too. If we're using clockworkmod recovery, shouldn't it skip the signature check?
It does skip it when flashing a rom when you select "Install zip from sdcard". But if the zip is called update.zip and you boot with vol-down+power, then you get the sig fail.
Seems like when it boots and trying to install a ROM specified with the /cache/recovery/command file, then it enforces a sig check. And signing with the test key doesn't work.
EDIT: Didn't notice this was an old thread.. but i guess it's still relevant.

Is anyone working on a one click CWM/root solution for EI22?

I know I'm not the only one who can't Odin flash CWM and actually get it to stay after reboot
So, anybody working on an easier, more reliable method?

I was able to get it to stick just now by using this kernel... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307980
Flash mkasik's key fix kernel mentioned above *before* you flash clockwork. Then it will stick. I posted this over in the purple clockwork recovery thread but I don't think its gotten a lot of attention. If you use heimdal you could pull the zimage and recovery.bin from the tar files and flash them at once as well. That should work too.

Did you Odin the keyboard fix kernel before CWM, or at the same time? If you did it at the same time, does the kernel go in the Phone slot?

I flashed the kernel first, rebooted and then flashed recovery. I used the PDA slot each time.

Glad to help, what made me think of that is I remembered back when purple clockwork came out you would still go into orange clockwork if you did a reboot recovery from the Clockwork App, and it was because there is actually a copy of recovery built into the kernel, then everyone updated their kernels with the new recovery and it was always purple. So when this happened I thought that sprint must have done something to send the three finger boot into the kernel recovery, turns out that must have been the case because a custom kernel fixes it.
The problem is that after (any) OTA update, the phone will reflash the recovery kernel with the stock boot kernel image on every boot, unless the recovery image is already "up to date". Here's the longer explanation.
Anyways, there's two fixes:
1. Flash a custom kernel, then a custom recovery. (As other have noted.)
2. Once rooted, use root explorer or something to delete the files: "/system/etc/install-recovery.sh" and "/system/recovery-from-boot.p". That will let you run the stock EI22 kernel with a custom recovery.

Thank you folks, you have the questions asked & answered (typically) before I can even ask. Just need to look!!!

[Q] Need help with unroot and return to stock

I need some help unrooting and returning to stock. I rooted the device using the method of returning back to 3.1 and flashing the unstable rom then installing iconia root then acer recovery to install CWM. After rooting I did not make a backup of my device so I have lost the original rom. This is an Acer Iconia A500 with 8gb internal storage bought from Best Buy on black friday. I've read through many forums in the development area but since I have not posted enough times I can not ask a question there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Basically, when you run a full package stock rom, it should put your tablet back into stock condition. This will remove the custom recovery, just like it did when you downgraded.
You can find a list of the stock roms based on region at this link.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878
Vache put some instructions there, and it's pretty simple.
Sorry, I'm new, and have the same question.
I am confused, for clarification ....
If you are unrooting and have Clock Work Mod Recovery what do you have to do?
I used Acer Recovery Installer from the market to install clock work mod. If I am unrooting and returning to sock, should I use the option to install "Stock USA 1.41.07_COM_GEN1 recovery" before flashing and then use the power/up button combination? Is it Ok to use Clock Work Mod to install one of the stock roms from the SD card or will Clock Work Mod cause a mess?

Vache has simple instructions on that page. As you read, it says to extract the update.zip file, put it to sd, then hold vol- and pwr. It should flash the rom, That's for the update zip..
However, I would use one of the full set roms.
When the stock rom runs, it should overwrite the CWM recovery, and re-instate the factory bootloader.
Here are the instructions direct from Vache's page for full rom.
"Here are some full packages, updates and EUU firmware from Acer OTA server and from some magical sources.
Full package and updates should be flash via the recovery.
EUU version are working in APX mode with nvflash. (you can enter in APX mode by booting the tablet with Reset / Power pressed)"
Now, what other recovery do you have to flash a full rom?
NOTE: I have not and have no plans to revert to stock. So I've never done this. You may want to post a question also in that thread to see if you can get any extra info.

You could also use the Downgrade tool with the original downgrade images. The original downgrade tool will put back factory recovery and factory stock. This would be everything you need to be totally stock. Once you get to stock, then you can just apply the OTA's if that's what you want. Or are you trying to get to stock and then root?

Yeah, I keep forgetting about your tool.
I think they just want to get back to a stock condition without cwm and root.
You may want to post a link to the tool.
Finally got it. Used the Acer recovery tool to flash Acer stock recovery image and then extracted the update zip from the full package and put it on my SD card (made sure it was the only zip on the card) then redooted into recovery by holding down the volume up key and the power button. Update flashed and all is back to stock. Reasons for doing this were that I could not find a ROM that seemed like it was a real improvement over stock. My favorite would have been Thor's ROM mostly due to the ice cream sandwich tweaks and the ability to clear the recent apps drawer. May go back to root but wanted to know how to get back if necessary. Thanks for all the help.

Glad it worked for you!
Vache should be a touch more clear on "which" recovery to use for the full package
Although it seems people used both CWM and Acer Recovery. (he just states "recovery")
Glad you cleared that up

@sydeu, you probably want to run Acer_A501_4.037.01_EMEA_TMPL. Note this is for the 501 so not sure if you are looking for a 501 or 500 stock rom.
I run it on my 501, and it has svetski lauguage support.
I think you can use any of the EMEA roms. You can unpack or decrypt the roms before flashing, and check the ldb files (system\usr\xt9\databases\ldb\) You should see an ldb that usually starts or contains "Sv". I think these are related to the keyboard, but it will have system support for the language.
Not all roms and updates are listed there, those are just the ones people were able to find. So get the one that's closest to your needs.

updating from 1.2 to 1.4.2 with EMMC CWM

OK, i have been out of the nook color game for far too long and it seems most of the threads are talking about going from 1.4.1 to 1.4.2. as you can tell, we haven't touched the nook color in a while (OS wise)
basically from what i can remember, while ago, when the NC first came out i rooted and Rom'd it all on the internal memory. it currently has CWM on it (old orange version) and stock 1.2 OS that i installed through CWM.
i tried installing the nookcolor_1_4_2_keepcwm.zip file or whatever it is, and it aborted the install....assuming because it is an older version of CWM?
the only way i could get into CWM was through trying to install the factory 1.4.2 file, once install failed, i could hit the power button and it would bring up CWM.
where can i go from here. i would be completely fine getting rid of CWM all together and just having B&N handle the updates from now since i have a couple of my own toys
ask questions, and i will try to answer them...but like i said, been out of the nook color game for a long time. i am comfortable with flashing stuff through CWM, not cumfortable with ADB nor making a bootable SD card...although i can follow directions so anything is possible.
thanks for you help, and my wife thanks you too.
The way I would go is to install newer CWM then use one of the 1.4.1 updates I posted in this post.
Then let B&N update it to 1.4.2 for you.
Ok, so how would I go about installing a newer CWM? As sad as this sounds I have never installed CWM any other way other than rom manager. And once I get the new CWM and 1.4.1 on there, do I just update by throwing the official release on the root of the internal memory like B&N tells me to or do I have to have the Keep CWM.zip?
Thanks again for all your help..appreciate it

Anyone? The wife is hounding me. Even if I can restore to completely stock she would be happy. How do I do this?
Thanks guys
Well, if you can still boot into a rooted 1.2 and have ROM Manager on there you can use that to flash the latest CWM. If not find the CWM 3.2.0.8 zip and the b & n 1.4.1 zip mentioned above and put them on a sd cad. I then boot into your current CWM and flash the new CWM (unless you did that via Manager) then flash 1.4.1 and call it macaroni.
One thing to remember followoing J5's response is... if you leave CWM setup as recovery... updates will fail.... That's why I have the 1.4.1 with CWM as alternate boot file with the others.

Use winimage32 to write the img file to the uSD card... that creates the bootable CWM uSD.... then put the 1.4.1 files on it and use that to flash to your nook.
1.2 to 1.4.3?
trying to revive old thread prior to launching a new one. I am in similar situation as OP (running 1.2.0 with CWM on emmc). Have no problem going through steps to get this done (been there done that on this old NC which is my sons now, and have an Asus Eeepad I have rooted and played with for about a year as well) including flashable/bootable sd card.
Question is to just confirm the steps to go from 1.2 to latest 1.4.3 and root it again (assuming I'll be using MN5 for that):
- Would I have to unroot and start installing BN updates until 1.4.3??
- Do I have to unroot first or can I just install a BN update to get to 1.4.3 and then run the manualnooter 5.x?
As OP mentioned all I see are steps for moving from 1.4.1 to 1.4.2 or 1.4.3 so wanting to check prior to moving forward.
Thanks.

You can flash the 1.4.3 directly over the old ROM. Just look at my tips thread linked in my signature at item A15. There is a link for a CWM flashable 1.4.3 there. And yes, you use MN 5 to root again.

Red ! when trying to go into recovery after OTA ICS upgrade?

Quick question for the guru's... I just realized that I can't get into recovery since doing the OTA ICS upgrade and rooting. I have both Acer Recovery Installer and ROM Manager, so I'm guessing I'll be fine using either to install a new recovery, but was curious if doing so would impact being able to get future OTA upgrades or not? I've done custom ROMs in the past, but I'm sticking with the stock OTA and rooting them at the moment and just wanted to double-check that a new recovery (or installing clockwork recovery) won't impact future upgrades.
Thanks for any advise!
JM
OK, I gave it a couple weeks - so I've got to give it a <bump> at this point.

I will assume you have stock bootloader? (the one that came with the OTA)
First off, don't use ROM Manager. It's for phones. Although it runs on tablets, you run a high risk of bricking your device if you use it.
Secondly, you have to be rooted before installing CWM. The most important is deleting the "boot-recovery" file located in the /system directory. Otherwise, whenever you boot your tab, the CWM will get overwritten. Instructions for this can be found in Civato's bootloader guide in the Dev section. Pretty easy to find.
There are also some handy apps, like After OTA for example. Like AcerRecovery, you should be able to install a CWM on your tab. I would use EZTerry's Public Recovery or Thor ver 1.7.3 CWM.
As far as future OTA, it will not effect the ability to get one provided you are running a stock rom. The only thing, when taking an OTA, you will lose root and recovery. And, there always is, as with any OTA, a risk the OTA will fail.
MD
MD, Thank You very much for the advice. While sitting in the airport with delays yet again, I finally had time to check the forum. Yes, I still have the stock boot loader. I am very glad you mentioned NOT using ROM Manager, as that was the method I was leaning towards using.
I'll take a look at Civato's guide this weekend (if my flight ever leaves and I can make it home).
Thanks again for the advice!
