Official GS3 Signal Thread - Galaxy S III General (US Carriers)

We all know that samsung has a history of poor radio performance... So let us know. How is yours performing?
Compared to your old phone?

Coming from the OG epic, my signal is much improved. I can now peruse the internet in my office where before I couldn't even make a call.
go go gadget galaxy s3!

Incredible S was better, no doubt

So I used the HTC one X for about 2 months before switching it out for a galaxy S3 and Ive noticed that my reception has def gotten worse. I talk a lot when Im home and since getting the S3, my friends are always telling me im Breaking Up on the call.
Is there a fix to this?

Seems pretty bad. Always 2 bars.

Has anyone switched from the fascinate to the droidx because of the reception?

if so, let me hear your story. i get way worse reception (bars, and DB signal) with my fascinate then with my BOLD. and it is getting on my nerves. i was thinking of switching to the x ( i want to stay with android). has anyone done the same thing? notice a diffrence???
thanks
Did a similar switch from the Captivate to the X. Granted, I can't compare signal strength between the two phones because they are two different carriers, but I think you will be much happier with the X. The Galaxy S series kind of feels really cheap to me. And they damage very very easily.
I switched from AT&T to Verizon (Droid X), no more dropped calls, woot

Own a DX and thinking of switching to SF for more roms

So i have had a DX for a while and like the phone. I decided to root and install some custom roms. Now that I've begun modding I've realized that there are many more roms for the Dinc and Fascinate.
I have the possibility of swapping my DX for a Fascinate and I'm trying to gauge based on Rom's and customization options whether or not I should.
Just from looking around for a few minutes it seems as though there are tons more roms and themes for the fascinate.
For all you modders, do you think a modded fascinate is better than a modded dx? Why??
Do it. I did. And wont go back
Since you came from a DX like I would be, did you see any drop in signal strength or gps abilities? Those are the big things I keep reading that are worse on the SF.
In what ways do you think the fascinate is better.
Just trying to get as much info as I can before I make a decision, don't wanna regret it.

The radio and GPS (software) on the Fascinate SUCK. I'm not knocking the Fascinate (I own one) but I came from a Epic 4g (Sprint) Where I had full bars practically everywhere I went, to having 1-2 bars everywhere I went. My Time Without a Signal went from 0-1% to a steady 33-35% when I switched to the Fascinate.
that's what I'm worried about for every thread I see about something cool, I see another one about how the call quality and gps functionality are poor.
Are either of those improved after installing custom kernels or roms?

Yes. New kernels alone help with GPS ping, and I haven't had a problem with the voice quality at all.
why would you go to the fascinate right after CES because there are 4 LTE phones coming are way that are probably way better than the fascinate
Because he is trading not upgrading

Out of the box, the Fascinate is inferior to DX in both call quality and GPS performance for me as well as battery longevity.
With custom kernals and roms, the Fascinate out performed the DX with mod or no mod.
Wife has the X, I have the fascinate. Since DJ05/DL09, we have nearly identical GPS functionality (time to lock, accuracy, etc.). Her X has better call quality, I think its due to an extra noise cancelling mic. She also gets slightly better reception, but I don't experience dropped calls or anything like that. If I have zero reception, she generally has zero reception. If I have barely 1 bar, she'll always have 2 or more.
Hers is unrooted, so I can't comment on ROMS, but I love what the devs have done for the fascinate, and it hasn't even made it to 2.2 yet, so I'm sure there's more to come. Strangely, the X seems to have better support for common games as well (my wordfeud lags compared to hers, few software companies are using the hardware of the Galaxy S line to its fullest extent) but the fascinate graphics chip produces some noticeable gains (angry birds is smoother on mine, ExZeus is smooth as butter, load times on gameloft 3d titles are faster and the games are smoother). My feeling is that the fascinate is much worse out of the box, but with a dedicated user, is probably the best verizon phone. I'm ignoring anything that's being released at CES as I type this...
Thanks for all the info. I definately plan on rooting the fascinate and from what I'm hearing a rooted fascinate will out perform a rooted x. I don't really use the gps too often, but the call quality was a concern. I didn't know whether or not kernels could improve on that.
How is the camera? I have a 5 year old and do use the camera often. The DX isn't as nice as my wife's Droid Incredible.
I had the fascinate and am glad I switched to the x.

The LTE phones are at least 3-4 months from being released at best. I'd say you're probably looking at a June/July time frame before you start seeing LTE phones for sale.

What rom are you using please? I have GummyJAR 2.5 and it still acted like a Fascinate without "lagfix".
The difference between the cameras will not be notable until you blow the picture up beyond 5x7 range. A far as LTE goes...yeah it will be great...if you live in a major market, otherwise you're looking at 1-2 years from now before that fancy new phone operates at a LTE signal level. Signal-wise I came from blackberry, which is widely known for signal quality, and I don't drop calls anywhere I wouldn't drop them before.
If you're switching phones because of the number of ROMs, you're going to be sorely disappointed. There are significantly more (and more importantly, way more mature, AOSP-derived) ROMs for the Droid X than there are for the Fascinate. You just need to look at places other than XDA, like droidforums.net. For whatever reason, relatively little development for the Motorola Droids tends to happen on this site.
Also, I'll just second the "terrible call quality" complaint on the Fascinate. It's extremely disappointing, as someone who came from a Droid 1. Huge, night and day noticeable difference. Fortunately, I don't use my phone to make very many actual phone calls anymore, so it's not as much of an issue as it could be. The signal strength issue, on the other hand...
And finally, the camera on the Fascinate is generally considered to be better than the Droid X's, despite the fact that it's 5 megapixels to the X's 8. The image quality (color saturation, etc.) really matters more than the pixel quantity, and that's where the Fascinate comes out on top. It's just like how the iPhone 4's 5-megapixel camera is undeniably better than just about any other phone right now, even those with 8 or 10 megapixels (ours isn't quite that good, but it's still better than most). The only downside for the Fascinate is that there's no hardware camera button, so it's a little tougher to take steady shots.
Bottom line for me is this: the Fascinate is a much better multimedia device (the screen looks infinitely better than the Droid's, for example, and it has a better GPU), but it's not nearly as good as an actual telephone. For me, multimedia is more important, and that's why I'm (most of the time) happy with the Fascinate. But that may not be the case for everyone.
All the devices mentioned at CES won't be available until the second quarter, possibly March at the earliest

The original reports were Q2 2011. April is ~3 months out, and that is the start of Q2, so unless they're pushing them out in Q1 and moving up their initial release schedule, it's going to be at least 3-4 months before they are out.
And considering they said at the press conference today the devices they introduced would be available in the second quarter, "some in March", I think it is safe to say we are a few months away

GS3 VS Droid Razr HD

Hi- I currently have the Galaxy S III on Verizon and have grown to hate it with a passion. The reception is horrid no matter where I go and it's the same story no matter what. When I first got the phone, it wasn't a problem. Somehow, even with three replacements, it's the same issues over and over. I've tried changing radios, etc. and it never fixes it. The phone cannot be kept in my pocket.
Verizon offered allow me to swap the GS3 for a Droid Razr HD and I said okay. It hasn't gotten here yet, but I'm already a little cautious. I'm willing to go back to a locked bootloader if it means having a phone that works, but.... I just noticed it only has 1Gb of RAM.
How smooth is the phone? Is battery life acceptible even without a removable battery on the HD?
Anybody go from a GS3 to a Razr HD? I'm sure Motorola makes a perfectly decent phone, but I'm wondering if I would have been better selling the GS3 outright and buying something else. The rep tried to swap it out for an OG Razr and I laughed in his face. Seems the HD is the best they can do... not even the Maxx HD. Errrrr.
If your having reception issues the the RAZR HD is your best choice,Motorola is known for having really good data connection.I to went from an s3 to a RAZR HD and you can't even notice a difference.RAZR HD is still as smooth, even better the battery life can last for at least a full day or day in a half depending how its used maybe even longer I've seen screenshots posted on here from ppl getting 2-3 days without a charge. The only thing I kinda miss while having the s3 is the dev community/ROMs.the RAZR HD has a locked boot loader making the ROMs for this phone harder and slower, this only about 5 ROMs that you can use for this phone
Thanks for the 411! I'm trying to stay optimistic.
I've never owned a Motorola, but if the reception is as good as everybody says, I think I'll be content.
I've had the s3,iPhone5,note2 and now the RAZR HD . Thank god for Motorola phones it easily has the best build quality signal strength and screen out of all android phones and it beats the iPhone 5 well because iOS is very stale. Mine is rooted and I'm using stock jrllybean browser instead of chrome and stock camera and gallery instead of moto's loving this phone.
I was on an airplane two nights ago with my RAZR HD and switched it out of Airplane mode while in flight 20 minutes after takeoff... I got signal, even EVDO at one point.
Of course we were flying a Dash 8, not a jet. Still, it was between two and full bars of signal.

The S3 has more RAM but the Razr HD has a bigger battery and way better design and build quality IMO. People say reception is better with Motorola as well. With the S3 you get better custom ROMs though and a bigger screen with more usable area due to the on-screen keys on the Razr HD.
A friend of mine has the S3 and I personally much preferred my Razr HD after comparing the two side-by-side. I really don't like the "button" on the front of the S3 and it just felt too junky to be a high end phone.
They accidentally sent me another S3 so now I won't get the Razr HD until Monday. Luckily, when I called they allowed me to switch the color from white to black. The first rep would only send white. Yuck.

I def. want to use the stock browser instead of chrome. I plan on rooting, but I'm rather over custom ROMs for the most part. I'll just need to find me something as an alternative to Allshare Play. I like having one app for dlna and remote access that offers the privacy of not having to share everything with my entire network.

I have had an Atrix, Razr, and now the Razr HD. Love them all. Just got the HD to replace an S3 so far i really like it. Great speed and reception. its only been a day so battery life, while good so far today we've only just begun.
I got my Droid Razr HD today and well.... So far, the reception in my house is a bit better. I'll have to do some real world tests tomorrow and see if it keeps reception going in and around town where the GS3 fails.
I must say though, it's on ICS still, but it does lag a tad. Hmmmmmm. I'll have to update and then check it out.
I must say, hot holy hell, the build quality of this phone though. Freakin' amazing! It actually feels like I'm holding a well made item in my hands. This is no comparison to any other Samsung or HTC products I've had. Also, the camera doesn't really seem that bad. I'm not a fan of stock Android.... so this may take some getting used to or some creative changes, but I can definitely see tons of appeal for this product.

The build quality, reception and battery life are leaps and bounds above the rest. I really like where Motorola is heading with their phones. I'm also coming from 2 previous Samsung phones with horrible reception aka Verizon galaxy nexus.

Who came from the Evo LTE?

Like the title says, I'm ready to upgrade and I want to hear from those of you that came from the Evo LTE. Do you have any regrets? Is the phone a beast? What roms do you recommend? I've been a long time MeanBean user all the way back to the Evo 3d and would love to find a rom similar to Mikeyxda's style. I almost jumped ship to Verizon but LTE is getting more common in my area so I will stick it out with Sprint for one more contract. Anyway, if you have any advice for someone that has had an HTC phone for the past 8 years that will help with the transition to a Samsung device fire away!
Me! Also had the EVO and 3D.
Not really too bad of a transition... The first thing you'll notice : the screen is much dimmer. I'd venture to say half as bright with auto. Touchwiz doesn't take much getting used to. Cartoony as hell, but you'll appreciate the little things, such as a robust music player, alarm and quick settings. Lightflow is my new favorite app. Customizable vibration intensity and a robust notification light are nice.
I did! The things I realized are that:
- HTC's camera app is SO much better. Burst mode is much more robust on the Evo
- The low-light on the Evo is better
- Build quality on the Evo is once again better, and I miss that kickstand. The phone felt much better.
- And as stated before, I'm gonna miss the IPS screen, it was much brighter.
Other than that, I really do like the S4, but I don't think it was THAT much of an upgrade from the Evo LTE.
I had the EVO3d for two years, then the EVO4gLTE for two years, and now the S4 for for one month.
Im not picky with a lot of things, and just want great usage out of a phone. I like being able to listen to music, watch movies, internet,
phone, storage, play a few games, text and take everyday pictures.
The S4 was a piece of cake to root and rom compared to my HTCs. The bigger screen is great, and I think its just a clear and bright as my
HTCs were. Ive already got about 20gbs of stuff on my ext sdcard, and Im glad I dont have to worry about not having a slot, like the HTC One. PIctures are clear and crisp, but I do think low light stuff isnt great, but its fine for my use. Build quality doesnt matter to me, as I have had a hard slim case on it and it hasnt come off one time, so I dont think b/q matters. I do miss the kickstand to watch movies. Battery life is all day and Im getting at least 3 hours of screen time during that. It is fast. I have dropped it once, from a height of about 2 feet, and besides a nick in the side nothing broke. Videos play fine and look fine. Sound is loud, and although the One is definately better, the S4 is still really good.
I am completely satisfied with it.
Another from the 4GLTE here, and a long line of HTC phones before it. Wife's S3 convinced me to try Samsung as it constantly dusted my Evo for ANY kind of data connection. And I've not been disappointed. Blows the HTC out of the water for crisp, clear pictures. And no more HTC tint!!
I am really impressed with how it always gets the job done, and very quickly. No more long waits for data to load, and on the same networks. It's so nice to finally own a phone that does what it's suppose to do, everytime.
I came from the EvoLTE...I also had the OG Evo from day one also. This is my first ever Samsung phone..I didn't really like it at first, I almost traded in back in and got the the htc one but I thought i was being too premature. I have noticed that the lighting on this like said before is a lot more dimmer so that takes some getting use to and a little bit harder to see when your outside in the sun.
This does have a lot of nice features and the camera is 5star to me. I just really wanted to try something different. I'm not dissatisfied with the phone but I'm sure I won't be fully happy until the development gets really up and going and there are tons of new mods and roms to try out. It has been slow starting out but Im keeping my fingers crossed it picks up!
I too came from the LTE. I think, overall, the S4 is much more snappier than any HTC I've owned out the box with minimal tweaks. The build quality isn't as bad as some are making it out to be. It feels good in the hand and once you throw a TPU case on it, it has the same feel as an LTE with much more under the hood. The Devs for this device are well known in the Samsung community and they've pretty much cracked every issue we've had to date, which was only with the current update. As far as a Rom like MeanBean, I haven't flashed any yet. I've just rooted, flashed a custom Recovery and been running the stock Rom. I haven't found a rom that offers what I want just yet but there are a few to choose from. Trust me you won't regret this purchase. The camera and video camera blow the EVO out the water and I SWORE by that thing.
Haven't gotten it yet, but I will be this weekend. My main reason is the sd card and better signal. I can't stand the fact that my wife's viper gets better lte than my flagship EVO. The plastic doesn't matter because I always have a case on it and there are a good amount of options for cases and screen covers. With listening to bluetooth music all day it will be nice to have spare battery to pop in. Hopefully the bt signal will be much better than my EVO as well. I'm kind of excited for a change as well I've had the Hero, EVO, 3d and lte.

im thinking of switching from the LTE to the s4 but i love viper roms customization too much, seems like their currentlty arnt many rom options for the s4, and yes i know it hasnt been out long and thats one of the reasons
I came from the evo LTE also.
Been real happy with the S4. I get 4G much more reliably at my house with it.
My only complaint is that the USB connection to my computer seems much less reliable. With the evo, you could leave it plugged in and go to recovery/bootloader/back to system, wherever, and it would always be connected. Frequently with the S4, I have to unplug it and plug it back in for the computer to recognize the phone again. Not a big deal though. Seems to be worse on my XP laptop vs. my Windows 8 desktop.
My screen doesn't seem that much dimmer, never really have a problem seeing it outside.
And lastly, there is not a whole lot of rom development yet, but it is ramping up :good:
Dido. Right from the EVO LTE. Sold it for $150 and picked up the S4. Had EVO 3D before that. I think I made the right choice.

I think you be happy with your decision. Sonic rom is probably where I'll be heading. Looks kind of "meanbean'ish". You know what I mean...
Well, I did it! My shiny new S4 is rooted and TWRP 2.5.03 is installed. I'm going to play with it for a while before I install a custom rom. Right now I'm waiting for my stock rooted backup to complete so I have a starting point if I run into problems.

Verizon G2 signal

I've had my Verizon LG G2 for four days. It seems that the phone data signal mostly stays at 1-2 bars. It's mainly on 4G, but there are times that it drops to 3G, even 1X. I have run side by side tests with an S4 where its signal icon is at least a bar higher and is always on 4G.
Does the G2 have a weaker antenna than the S4? Or could I have a faulty phone?
Here's another thing, MMS messages seems to take between 30-45 seconds to send. I am a new Verizon subscriber, but when I was on Sprint my phones rarely took this long to send an MMS. Is the length of time my phone takes to send an MMS normal for Verizon?
Lastly, my phone heats up to the point of getting hot whenever I'm on a call for more than 5 minutes or whenever I send multiple MMS messages. If I took the phone back to the Verizon corp store where it was purchases, would it qualify for a new replacement?
Thanks in advance.
I don't see any of that on mine and the signal is much better than my old GNEX.
Sent from my VS980 4G using Tapatalk 4
My G2 gets 2-3 bars indoors where I work, where my GNex would struggle just to keep one bar. If I go outside, it gets a full 4-5 bars and good speed too (I hit 43.8 mbps just this afternoon on Speed Test). Granted, the GNex's radio hardware sucked, but I don't find the G2's to be a disappointment at all.
For a better comparison than number of bars, you can go to Settings -> About Phone -> Network -> Network Type and Strength. It breaks it down by 4G (data) and 1X (voice) signals. Numbers closer to zero are better, so for instance -50 dBm is a much better signal than -100 dBm. Not sure where this is on the S4, but it should be in a similar place.
Well I got mine on Wednesday, came from the RAZR maxx HD. I an day mine is much better than the maxx hg. The interior of my building at work I couldn't get a signal with my HD, it would drop to 1x and sometimes no signal. This phone keeps 4g in the same spot. My office with the HD was OK, slow internet but kept 4g. This phone works perfect there too.
I think you have a faulty one.
Be careful comparing different UI's. When I was swapping back and forth between sense and aosp sense showed 5 bars and aosp showed 2 >_>. Artificial Inflation!!!
I actually haven't even made a call or sent an MMS on my G2, so I can't comment on those
Verizon signal on mine seems better than my gs4. I've dropped to 3g only once in the weeks I've had this and that's because there was a huge verizon outage in NJ

same network?
also the artificial inflation above. If the 5 bars were more accurate then the 2 bars were off. And thats not just ui, its modem ,rom, phone, tied into circumstances and networks lol. On previous phones I noticed that itsnot as straight forward.
For me reception/in call quality/network speeds on g2 has gotten better then on all previous phones.
On Verizon curently have razr hd and note2. Thinking of G2. So you guys that have had them for awhile how is data reception? My Razr is top notch there but a little slow on everything else. My note2 is fast as lightining but lacks a bit compared to Razr in data reception. Im in a poor coverage area for about 7 months out of the year and need good 3G 4G reception. So how about it how good is the G2? Thanks

Just came from a razr, the difference is night and day. In addition, the razr doesn't give accurate measurements of signal. The G2 has been more accurate, has a better signal, and is faster.

That's really good to here my HD is really good for signal its just hasn't got the power or I should say processor to do the job. I'm unlocked rooted and over clocked to 1890. It works but its really struggling. If the G2 will give me good signal strength its twice the phone my HD is out the box. Thanks.

I thought the signal on my razr was good also, until I got the G2. I have been going to a doctor's office for the last 4 months. My razr would always have 1 bar of 4G, but the speeds were more like evdo. I would always have to jump on the free wifi. My G2 on the other hand has 4G when it says 4G. I don't use the wifi anymore because it's actually slower than 4G.
As for the power, it has easily run everything I've thrown at it. Even programs that slowed my razr almost to a stop. Night and day.
My only real problem with the G2 was the phone call quality. I think it is something that is really skimmed over in most reviews, when it should be a priority. I mean, after all, it is a phone. On the razr, phone calls were clean and clear like I was in the same room or at worst, 1 over. On the G2, calls are more bassy and it sounds like there is some distance between me and the caller, if that makes any sense. I actually feel like I'm on a phone. I do have to ask people to repeat themselves more often, but not so much that it's a hassle. Most of the time call quality is actually pretty good, but after using Motorolas since the OG droid, it just doesn't feel right at times. One good thing, is I occasionally hold the phone between my head and shoulder with very little problems. On the razr, I just couldn't do that comfortably because the callers on the other side wouldn't be able to hear me. Hasn't happened yet with the G2.

Your really selling me but that's what I like to here not how many KB download I got but where I get 4G now that I didn't get before. That is more of a test of how the phone is working than what it says on a gauge. Going to start getting one tomorrow I don't have an upgrade coming up and it wouldn't matter because I'm on u.limited and font want to loose it so it's full price or probably find a new in box on eBay and save the tx and a bit more. Should be able to pick one up for about $475. Thanks Again.

Thanks

My wife has the razr maxx, I'm coming from the maxx hd. On fringe areas, it's almost the same. This last week, where I was, I could kinda make phone calls, texts are in and out with the G2. I was in the same place a few weeks ago with the maxx hd and it was the exact same. About 2 weeks ago I was in the same place as my wife and hers kept the signal a little longer on the maxx than my G2. And the dbs were a little lower on hers, maybe 5db, indicating a little better service. The G2 does a little better than the maxx hd inside a building tho, it keeps 4g where my maxx didn't at one place at work.
Overall I would say it's a wash I'm my experience. But I use a Bluetooth and the Bluetooth connection is a little better.

I was in the same boat. I got mine on ebay for $508 with the quick window case and screen protectors. Mine was listed as used, but it was better condition than a lot of the so called new ones. Less than an hour of use, compared to new auctions with less than a week of use.

Thanks started shopping last night if its as good as RAZR that's about all a guy could ask for. I would guess from the specs she should be pretty fast that's one hell of a processor.

I have had the same issue as you all did. I have an old sims card that was in my old droid 4 phone. My coverage kept losing 4g and no matter what I did no 4g in sight. I have a sims card that came with the lg g2 and after a long time of suffering with this problem I called tech support. He tracked down the problem to the sims card I had in the phone. Long story short the problem lies in the old sims card. The old card was primary a 3g card so the device would try to go to 4g and it did on a temp basis but after a 2 to 3 minute period it would never go back to 4g without the reboot. I had tech support check it out and after we activated the proper sims card...poof... all better! The problem lies in the sims card. Call tech support and it will fix your problem. Hope this helps everyone by offering a solution and exposing the problem so everyone understands the issue..
