eclipse for java EE developers, why?
Also why do you waste your time covering subject thats been covered elsewhere over 9000 times?

Hello everyone!
I am the lead developer at Kilobolt Studios, and I am here to help aspiring game developers create awesome games.
I recently made a post on the general Android forums to see if there's any interest for a game development guide. Well, it turns out there are lots of people who are interested! So I made the decision to begin writing a series of game development tutorials that will begin with basic Java and delve into Android-specific game development soon.
Before we begin, here are a few things to keep in mind:
1. Subscribe to this thread! (Thread Tools > Subscribe > Daily Updates(?))
Otherwise you will forget that it's here.
2. Game development does take time and dedication. If you are not prepared to give both, think twice before you start!
3. Once you do start, if you find things difficult, ask me and others your questions! Either send me a PM on here, or for quicker response, contact me using one of the options here: http://www.kilobolt.com/contact-us.html. I will try to explain as much as possible and post frequently asked questions in the following post so that other users can benefit from your questions.
4. Beginners are very welcome! I will arrange the tutorials so that people can easily start where they feel comfortable. The very first tutorials will be targeting beginners, so that we can get everyone on the same page before we start the fun stuff.
5. Feedback is even more welcome! If you have any tips on how I could improve my tutorials in terms of readability or enjoyability, or if my tutorials suck, let me know
6. And one last request: if you appreciate the series, which we are offering to everyone for free, please support Kilobolt Studios!
To do so...
1. Download our game for free here:

2. Donors receive special gifts! You can find out more about that here:

I've decided to try be a contributor to this community however im already stumbled on my first step which is how do I get Eclipse installed and working. I've googled this and I get outdated links, download wrong Java packages etc. So if someone could spell it out with links below. That would be much appreciated!

Watch this video, should explain how to set it up.
You don't install Eclipse, it's a stand alone package rolled up in a zip/tar file. You extract it, double-click on the .exe (if windows) and it will run.

STFU, at the least the guy is trying. Contribute or get out of here.
OP: Are you trying to write apps, or develop ROM / port things for the phone.
If you're trying to write apps, this might a good reference point:
http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/projects/projects-eclipse.html
However, this may not be the right forum if you're trying to learn how to do that.
If you want to make ROMs or port.... that's considerably tougher and you usually don't use Eclipse for that....

Google Search has been most helpful for me for porting MIUI. Also, if you can't find what you're looking for on google, go to webchat.irondust.net and join the #epic room. Devs can help you there, but google first please.

Don't really care about this guy. At least I got my answer. Tysm for the video link. The first thing the video discusses is how confusing it is to get started just trying to download JDK.
Secondly, I plan on first making some basic apps and understanding the way Android works. Then, possibly may go more advanced with themeing and such.
Lastly, I want to point out I'm not alone in this post. YES you can GOOGLE what I asked for in this thread. Hardly any of your search results you get back from Google will be clear and concise and I appreciate some people understanding that not everyone is fluent in the ways of Android development.
I flashed mostly everything interesting on these forums whether its roms or themes or mods. I look up to the developers at ACS among all the others.
I believe this is a relevant post and a lot of people feel the same way I do.
Thank you.
I am also heading down this path. Do you have programming experience?

Theming/ROM/Kernel development are seperate from app development, as I'm sure you are aware. Two different beasts entirely, actually. I would start with ROM and theming ventures first to really learn how the operating system works, then move to kernel development to see how things are actually interacting.
App development is a whole 'nother ballgame, writing apps in Java is really the nitty gritty of the works. To understand this, it would help to know how things in the OS work.

Yes I do. I've had experience in Java it's just been years! But um I don't think the basics of programming will be any trouble. I've already attempted to read up on some Android Programming Tutorials. My main hurdle was getting this set up on my computer so I could follow along with a guide. I do realize themeing and developing are apples and oranges but they are both interesting to me. I read someone's post long ago (not sure who) to begin writing apps and then maybe try one's luck to create ROMs.
Hey bud, congrats on trying to learn this stuff. We at ERA started out just as you did about 3-4 months ago with a similar post. It is tough going at first but there are plenty of people out they're willing to help. The devs in this community are great and I feel confident in speaking for ERA, and from coming from where you are, that if you need any help or have questions feel fee to pm us and we'll do our best to help.
Like I said it was a post like this, a couple dudes messing around on our free time, and some great help that led to what our team has become, so anything is possible, bro. Good luck.

I highly doubt I'll get to that level in that same amount of time but I've flashed everything for this epic and we all know at some point we're going to run out of things to flash until we figure out how to port ICS over. That's the time I would like to be a contributor to the development for this phone. thank you so much for the support!

KANG - To steal or a stolen code when referring to programming. Also can refer to leaked coding.
Due to the copious amounts of kanging that now happens in regards to android development I will be pulling all of my links and changing the original posts with this. If you would like to use my roms please feel free to find the kanged version elsewhere.
For inspiring developers, rtfm or ask someone who knows what they are doing before you steal someone elses work, look at someones code and get the general idea. If you port or use something as a base, credit that person. Do not just link back to the thread where you got it from. My email is [email protected] so feel free to ask questions, if I know the answers I will be willing to assist.
I don't wish to call anyone out but I will say there are a few roms, specifically for MT4G Slide that have been kanged. One of which was taken from me, another was a kanged version of CM7 which was just the Settings.apk SettingsProvider.apk and Launcher.apk replaced. CM7 is framework edits, not just a list of apps an entire team works on. You cannot just replace apps in CyanogenMod and expect it to work thus the reason some parts of the Settings.apk force close. Its not hard to be an idiot but its even easier to spot bull**** work, do yourselves a favor, leave xda, leave rootzwiki, leave whatever thread you are on and learn from people who know what the fk they're doing.
If my email fills with hate mail, then fine, at least what I did I feel was right and do not have to worry about my development being taken and rebadged, if I'm out of line then have a moderator delete and close my thread. Thanks!
I have learned a whole lot from you, and couldn't imagine missing them "classes"

Rootz has great guides, so does the google code page when it comes to smali/baksmali (thanks one_love)... But some people have an easier time learning when they are walked through the steps. I also plan on making notes of JKILO's sessions to keep for myself and to give out to those that are interested.

Hi all,
I've got the Summer Yearly Exams coming up soon and I spend too much time on XDA (lol). So I thought, I'm going to ask a mod to ban me for 15 or so days, until the exams finish. So could someone look after the threads I have made (e.g S-ON and S-OFF guides) by helping people if they ask a question? Normally I do it (except when Scratch or sly or nejc are faster than me) but since I'm leaving it would be good if a couple people could look after them. Anyway, so i'll say bye now until about 2 weeks
Thanks,

Hi everyone!
Yay! I've finished my exams, and can now get back on full speed xda posting!
Technically I should've been unbanned on the 30th, but since mods can't specify a specific time, (they can only set 5 days, 15 days, 30 days, infinite etc.) which meant I got banned until now. I tried contacting mods up until now on their Google+ , twitter profiles etc. and none responded so I had to endure the full extra 5 days Not to mention, the server's clock is slightly backward (it said I would get unbanned at 5:00pm but I got unbanned at around 5:20!)
So during those 5 days I decided to pay back the devs who created the ROMs that I spend the most time on! In the form of banners and screenshots and
images to make their thread (especially Erwin's, don't tell him I said that ) so much more awesome! (Admittedly I did "borrow some images from other banners, hoping I don't get sued for copyright infringment )

Welcome back! Nice thread images. I wouldn't get around to making some MIUI ICS images, until we have a definite thread and OP. As well as some new development. Its awesome to see that you'll be making a thread going through the process of making the banners.
Sure! I'll do a guide soon. I'll also give tips on what good design looks like, as well as some tips on contrast and minimalism etc.
But until then,

Its true to the original, but could possibly be made a bit smaller. Is that droid sans that you're using for the "A new way to experience android" text?

On here are about as clear as mud.
I can say thanks for the hard work you guys put in but you really need to stop assuming that everyone is programing at degree level.
After 4 broken mouse a broken cup and 4 sleepless nights I'm giving up trying to root the wildfire..
I don't even want the thing in this house anymore!
That's funny I followed them twice with no complications at all and I knew nothing about Android and have basic computer skills, don't blame the guides here for your own incompetence. Those guides have helped hundreds/thousands of people to gain root, if you're having problems why not ask like everyone else does, though I doubt you'll get much help now.

When I rooted mine I had zero knowlege of Android past "this app looks neat" and I did it in an hour or two (didn't get much sleep that night. too much new stuff to install)
But seriously, if you just use a third party tool like Revolutonary, it's as easy as pie.
Download tool->plugin phone->install drivers (if necesary)->run tool->follow simple onscreen instructions

I just think folk could be a bit clearer at times and then when your not having success further in the post someone chimes in with another 'even easier' solution lol, well so they say so your away again and suprise it doesn't work or something isn't clear so you go back and aw well the loop continues until you litteraly break!
I give up the phones old hat now anyway!
Relax A Minute!
@Tevion74
I can understand where you are coming from, before I bought my Wildfire I had never even used any PC Linux Distros (distributions) and had a lot of reading up to do, but the main thing I had to remember is this:
KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON LEARNING
whenever I had a problem rooting or now when I am trying to do something with my wildfire - I will not just dive straight in, research what you want to know IN DETAIL
and then if I am still in doubt, I will ask one of the great devs on here, such as Scratch0805, Heavy_Metal_Man, Sympnotic and Arco68 and Hacktrix2006 - but there as so many that I can not name all the people that have helped our friend Willy Wildfire progress to where its at!
My point is, dont just try and do it if you can't, RESEARCH, and if need be - ask for help.
There is always people on XDA willing to give help to those that ask and don't tant.
Dev? Me? Far from it mate, I have no knowledge of Linux based systems at all, well except what I've learnt here, it has all come from reading guides on xda.
I struggle to understand when erwinp, sympnotic start talking in the cm9 thread.
I think of myself more an advanced user who's not afraid to have a go.
To the op if you post your problem in the thread of the guide your trying to follow we'll try to help you and figure out where your going wrong.

lol thanks for the kind words
You just need to understand that this is a forum. If a member of a forum has a problem, he can post about it and other members can help him solve it. That's how forums work
I'm 100% sure if you posted about your issue in the relevant thread, you would've gotten a solution in 2 hours, if not less.

agreed. im sorry if my reply seems harsh (my hasty responses can be) it just frustrates me when people come with grievances and seem to have not asked for help on the matter. if you had asked for help, read the threads and still couldnt get the help you wanted then i would understand. (we have all been there before). our members try there best when righting guides to make them as user friendly as possible. we all need to start somewhere and alot of us come here with little or no knowledge of linux or android. if we can do it you can do it. these things just take time and paitence.

Look ya muppet, if you read the guides as carefully as you read my posts I'm not surprised you can't get root. Me and you both seem to have a bit of an attitude so let's just leave it.
Yes we kind of clashed the first couple of posts I get that and offer my apologies, it just p's me off when people throw a fit and blame others because its themselves that can't follow a simple step by step guide correctly. This forum is what it is because of people asking questions and others answering them. I'm offering to help you as that's why we're here and I know other people will too so just chill out, Buy yourself a new mug then have a cuppa tea n we'll try to start again and get you up n running!

I purchased my wildfire in South Africa and to gain root i couldnt use the regular way, i researched day and night, by the way this is my first android phone, i knew nothing what so ever about what i was doing but because i just applied myself into the task, the day i decided to finally root, it took me less than an hour. but now im fairly competent in fixing this and that on a rom, so shoot your questions, we will answer..........this is XDA, we can do anything.
Ok thread cleaned and closed.
To make things clear here.
XDA is a developer forum and not everyone's personal tech support.
Mostly everyone in here tries and reads the guides and the wealth of information included for their own benefit.
If you dont like the current guides then by all means make your own and offer something back to the community.
I had a xoom before and rooted and put many roms on it.. I used this guide
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1242241
which is not easy at all.
Now I read that with 4.2.1 I can simply just flash one of those stock roms that are already rooted..
Is this true?? No need to unlock anything?>?
If that's the case, HOW IN THE WORLD do you put a touch twrp recovery on first??
I swear, things only got harder
HELLO?????
Is this forum really dead?
Every guide I start to follow, in the middle of the guide or even many posts down in replies, the author will state, that it doesn't work with JB
Well.. This xoom I have, has JB..
so there is no way to root and rom it then??

Lol, call this Ironic, I don't know... But I'm on the biggest hackers/geek/electronics forum in the world and there is no information on here, why would google have it?
Think about it.. If XDA doesn't have info, who else would.. right?
In anycase...
A forum dedicated solely to the device in question???
Google is a search engine so it doesn't actually have the information it shows you in search results in its database. It just monitors your search history and habits so it has a better idea of what ads to throw at you. You give it something to search for, then it scours the internet looking for the answer and related topics. There is plenty of advancement going on with devices outside of xda
