I found only Webkit based apps are rendering Indian texts (Hindi, Bangla etc.) properly. Texts are not property shown on any other app.
So far I know, ICS has support for these language by default. But it's not working properly on this tablet. Did Samsung did something wrong? Can anyone give me a solution?

Are you referring localization? I would have assumed that it would have been part of GB as well... *Surprised* Most likely webkit supports UTF-8 text as well.
Well, technically I'm not referring localization. Indian texts has a rendering style, some characters go on top, some changes shape. According to Google ICS should handle the perfectly but in this tablet its not working as it should. Samsung may have done something wrong. But yes, Webkit apps works perfectly.
Alas, Android do not have a basic standard to follow.

For those of you following along with the thread in the development forum, I'm not allowed to post in there yet but I've come across something of interest.
I took the resources.arsc file out of the framework-res-uastring.apk posted there and put it in the framework-res.apk that I pulled from my WiFi Xoom, and wouldn't you know, it worked!
I'm testing for stability now, but I can say that it's working for me so far. I've attached my modified framework-res.apk in case anyone wants to test along with me without going through the trouble of mashing files.
Nice, I was wondering if that would work. Just a word of caution though, since this resources.arsc comes from the US 3g Xoom it only has US-English and Spanish support.
Can someone test this and verify it works?

Works. Don't forget to reboot after applyng. I will post back if I notice any side effects but so far no problems.

Does it have any other benefits other than the user agent?

I only incorporated the uastring change into my mashup.

Is this for the wifi version, would it work on 3g? And do I need root?
Sent from my Xoom using XDA Premium App
I tried it and caused multiple FC's on me as soon as it rebooted.
I however did the samething you did and pulled my framework-res.apk, added the resources.asrc file to it and then pushed it and all was good. Thanks for the idea!
Thanks for that Codespeare. I have posted a version for the Canadian WIFI Xoom ONLY under the Dev section OT.

pulled my framework-res.apk & added the resources.asrc file. works great. thanks Codespear!!!
I did it too, worked. EXCELLENT!
Will try now, thank you so much, I love you really I do.
EDIT: works... but at what cost? I have noticed the keyboard has been acting up, sort of how like the Gingerbread keyboard screws up from time to time, I don't think it's it me, but sometimes when I type something like backck it does that! Back back back backck, I have never noticed this before hand.... I am typing this out on my Xoom right now just to let you know. I hope this wasn't the fix. Still the keyboard works okay but that annoying bug that Gingerbread gets is present... pretty weird. Hope for a fix if this is really the UA string fix. Thanks anyways, it works great!

You can now load up a website in full desktop mode by default. If you don't have this all websites will load into their mobile versions, because it detects it is Android and makes it suitable for the screen. Since Android works on tablet PCs now, this should be an interchangable option, however I don't think Google thought of this when they were making the browser.

And why do you not just change the UA string in the explorer or dolphin setup from android to desktop?

Because it changes back by default on the Android web browser. Also this is for the wifi only Xoom, there is another version specifically for the 3g Xoom.

There's a thread in the dev forum specifically for the 3G. I tried what I did as sort of a last resort for the wifi version.
I try asking here, because I find different answers around. Is it possible to use sms or mms straight out of the box?

I use Textplus on my wifi 10.1, it does sms and mms through wifi and it's free

Ive got the 10.1v which comes with 3g and we definately dont have send sms/mms capabilities straight out of the box. not sure how other people are able to have it.
I also havent found another app that gives the tablet that option to send sms/mms on its own, but will have a look at this textplus app mentioned above.
You could use the textab program ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133277 ) but this app relies on your phone being connected to the device and uses the phones sms send receive function, merely displaying the messages on the tab and allowing you to send a message through the tablet.
and we are unable to make calls either, no dialer program, and havent really looked but dont think there would be one that would be honeycomb compatible for download from the market.
This i was afraid of! I have seen some sales spec. say can sent sms/mms. I have a wifi us version now, and i not find textplus etc not really that great.
I want to be able to text sms direct from the 3g - otherwise the model is useless for me.

Keep in mind that the 10.1v is a somewhat older device than the 10.1 - so there may be features in the (brand new, just hitting the market) 10.1 3G not present in the older (available in some other countries for at least some time) 10.1v 3G.
someone can confirm if the 10.1 3g is able to sms??
I asked 5 shops now - and got different answers!!

" Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 3G*brings you the new and creative means, which comes with novel assortment of the straightforward messaging features like SMS, MMS, Email, Push Email and IM. These messaging options are simple, instant and elaborative to covey you, your ideas and messages."

i've got the 10.1v. it definetly can't send sms out of the box. there's no such sms-app on the tablet. i guess it's the same with the 10.1
but installing an app like chompsms should enable the 3g tablets to send sms through their sim-card, not a web-service. (did not test that, because i don't need sms functionality on my tablet. for this i use my mobil )
i know chompsms and thats a greart app. I used it on my phone before.
If chomp is working on the tab - i can live with it - as it have far more features.
Thanks. . .

Hey All,
My Nexus 7 just arrived SIB (sexy in box) and I noticed an IME in the selection list labeled "iWnn IME" for Japanese input.
From what I can gather, it's put together by a company called OMRON and has some pretty interesting features (personal dictionary sync across devices, context prediction, etc.).
How did these guys come pre-installed on a stock Google device? What am I missing here?
No idea. I just disabled that one and the Chinese one too.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app
I had Korean, Chinese Pinyin and iWnn IME Japanese on my tablet as well, all disabled but not removable.
Have a theory it's there for the sake of compatibility. I remember from browsing on PCs I would see weird box shapes on certain websites when in fact it was because I was missing chinese/japanese language packs.
I am japanese, however I wonder it too. Why?

If that matter related to hardware limitation maybe you're right. It's not possible.
Actually, our device already run multitask, but can't show that side by side display.
Except when using the mini apps on the lower nav bar.
This will be great if some devs out there take this challenge and bring something new for the device.

You wouldn't want such a lousy implemented proprietary feature that only works with proprietary Samsung apps.
There is a company who is working on this http://www.onskreen.com/cornerstone/ and they are open source and releasing source code for developers to work on. I am not so good in compiling from source, any dev out that to take the challenge?

I was recently approached by a friend that has a nexus 4 that he bought from the play store (like mine). Both mine, and his, are running stock 4.2.2. And use the chrome browser.
The issue is that some sites display Arabic characters correctly on my phone, but not on his. This is odd because both our phones have the same stock version of 4.2.2, and both have added the stock Arabic keyboard.
Can anyone explain the difference?
Note: on his phone, Arabic letters are usually displayed properly, but some sites display squares instead. One such example is the soccer news site www.kooora.com
