I don't know if this is "common knowledge" or not, but apparently the USB port on the keyboard dock is a Sleep/Charge port! I plugged in my HTC Rezound to the port & it started charging just like it was attached to my PC. The tablet was docked and turned off. I read about one person who had a Prime that could charge only if the tablet was docked & I read another person say they couldn't charge anything at all.
I don't know if the TF300 is different in that regard, I only checked charging with the tablet plugged in. I'll test charging with the tablet out this afternoon. My assumption is that it won't work. I figure the ports on the dock aren't active until tablet connection is made.
UPDATE: I tried to charge my phone with just the keyboard dock (no tablet inserted) and it didn't work. So apparently the tablet must be docked for the USB port to become active.
Nice. Pretty cool hidden feature for anyone with a dock. I wonder how much the tablets battery drains though charging a phone. Probably also extends the life while tethering.

Hello,
Just got my EEE Pad with the keyboard dock today.
I read that for the first time you should charge the batteries for at least 8 hours.
Now, what is best? Charging the tablet docked or to separately charge the tablet and then the dock?
Thanks
I use the keyboard dock as a charging station to be sure both batteries are fully charged. The other reality is that power is power and I doubt there is any real difference except for the convenience and amount of time involved.
Bye.
Yeah in the end I decided to dock the tablet and charge it through there, seeing as I am working until 7, I wont be able to play with it
do you guys leave your tf plugged in at all times?

Nope, I unplug it when its fully charged and only charge when there is less than 10% left.
I ordered a USB 3.0 extension cable. One of the reviewers for it said it worked perfectly for his TF. One of the most annoying things I found was not being able to charge from the computer while I used the device. The plug was way too short for the wall. This one is awesome and very cheap. Here is a link:
6ft USB 3.0 A Male to A Female Extension 28/24AWG Cable (Gold Plated)
Quotes from the reviews of it:
"Powers and charges the ASUS Transformer tablet when used with the ASUS Transformer power adapter. Also works as data cable when connected to PC."
"i bought 5 of these for random usb charging extension for mainly tablets - ipad, transformer, galaxy tab. these work perfectly fine and charge at full speed."
It's better for Lithium-Ion batteries to drain little and top-up as often as you can so I plug it in whenever I'm not using it.

I hear a lot of back and forth about this. Do you have a source for this info? (Not doubting you, just, like I said, I constantly hear people changing their minds on this)
EDIT: Nevermind, maybe I am thinking way back or something. I am finding most info points to "Don't deep drain if you don't have to"... just google lithium ion battery care if you thought the same as me.
I'm curious, i just got my transformer today, in the instructions it says to charge it for 8 hours. But I had full charge after 3 hours. Do I still need to charge it for another 5 hours?

yes you should, the battery needs overcharged for premiere usage. but after that don't overcharging your battery in daily usage which the OP is asking.
I charge mine a few hours at night, but unplug it overnight. Since I have the dock, I don't even come close to running out of battery during the day so I leave it uncharged until night time again.
In this case, my Tablet is always 100% and my dock battery drains and gets recharged. I have no idea what my battery life will be later on hehe.
Lithium ion are good for about 300 to 400 charge cycles...usually closer to 300. It is a good idea to charge fully and then simply let it run down. ...i am a tech at a lathe national company. We see trouble tickets from users about batteries on laptops frequently. If the device sits plugged in all the time your battery will last a little over a year before it's about 50% effective. I have no source for my data, just experience.
Hope that helps

Hey everyone, so I just got a transformer + dock from bestbuy and so far I'm loving it. I started reading through the stickies to learn more about the device and it seems like a lot of people are having problems with the dock draining the battery.
One thing I noticed about the dock when I'm using it is that it constantly uses its own battery to charge the tablet. Doesn't this mean that I can only use the tablet+dock as long as the dock doesn't run out of battery? Is there a way to stop the dock from charging the tablet so I can get more use out of "netbook mode?"
In other words, is there a way to manually tell the dock to start and stop charging?
Thanks everyone
The battery of the dock discharges only until 3%.
While docked the tablet is charged from the dock. The tablet uses the docks battery for power until the dock battery is empty, then the tablet starts using it own internal battery.
The idea is that the tablet battery is kept charged (or as charged as possible) while docked so you have a full battery on the tablet when you ndock it.
So based on these two responses it's possible to use the keyboard dock all the time without the dock becoming useless after a while? Just wanted to know just in case I need to use the keyboard all day
Yes, you can use the dock all the time, until the dock battery and TF battery are empty

From what I can see, when you have the keyboard dock connected, the dock will still continue to work even if its battery has nearly run down. This is as long as there's enough battery power in the TF's internal battery to power it just enough to use the keys and touchpad. The point it'll stop working is when both batteries are nearly out, in which case just charge them .
So, short answer is yes if there's enough power left in the TF itself.
[EDIT]: Yeah, pretty much what sr-ha said lol .
So if the dock continuously keeps the tablet battery charged even when it's at 100%, wouldn't that degrade the tablet battery? Or maybe I misunderstood, does the dock stop charging at 100% and power gets taken from the dock until it's at 3%?
I appreciate the responses, still a transformer noob

The idea is to keep the tablet at full charge so if you undock it is at the maximum level.
I think the Transformer just uses the dock battery when docked since you don't see the charging icon if the tablet is at 100%. The dock drains until its 3%, then the tablet battery gets used.
Is it really that difficult to understand? The dock charges the tablet. Modern batteries are computer controlled to not overcharge so this theory of degrading the battery by charging it too much or two often is a load of crap. No manufacturer would build anything that technologically stupid anymore. Especially not a top notch company like ASUS.
The dock will pretty much always work as long as there is a charge from something. I've never seen the dock go below 3% so I assume once it gets to a certain level it does draw from the tablet battery to maintain useability until the tablet and keyboard batteries are both depleted.

Exactly what I was thinkin'
yesterday my keyboard suddenly stopped working. Whenever I dock the tf its as if nothing happens. Except when the dock is plugged in to the charger..then I see its battery icon...red...with a question mark. When I do logcat I see something like battery state unknown.
Anyone got any theories. Ibsadly lost the serial for the KB and I don't think I can rma. It.
Sidenote....as I type this I become more and more painfully aware of how I hate soft keyboards.
Almost forgot...using latest prime rom

Grr...is there any way anyone would let me borrow their devices serial number. Asus wouldn't even start the email process without a serial.

First of all, I'm the guy who soldered in a 500 gb hard drive into my docking station and some other people's docks. I know the hardware inside out. If you don't have any other option, consider sending your dock to me and I'll try to repair it. You pay for shipping. I guess I'll do this as a favor so I won't charge anything.
Again, explore your options and send me a PM.
Added by edit.
The serial is attached to your dock. How did you lose this?
I dunno if they changed the way they are attached to the serials on newer versions but on mine it was a flimsy sticker...which got rubbed off the device I guess.
Anyhoo...right before i went to sleep I actually had an idea of sending you a pm about letting me have your serial...as I'm a bit desparate (enough to ask a stranger for a favor) and I know how your mod (albeit quite awesome) renders your dock irreversibly un-rma-able. Then I log into the forum and here you are =)
Anyway...I might just take you up on your generous offer but I have a feeling that my docks battteries are the problem. Do you know if the dock works if the batteries are dead?
In the log cat....I see something like: unable to detect battery health €#£'#&'###'.
The gibberish part isn't verbatim...but there was a bunch of giberrish symbols after the message.
My symptoms are basically the tfiner doesn't respond at all to the dock....except when the dock is plugged to the charger...then the docks battery icon shows up in a red error state.

Even if the battery is dead, your dock should still work. My guess is one of the connection wires is the problem. Can't know for sure until I do some tests.
My serial number wouldn't work for the following reason. I sold my old one with the 500 gb hdd and got a new one recently. Upgraded it to 750 gb . So, my serial # is now B80. Yours, I'm assuming, is older than this.

Call me stupid but I did not actually know that. That's incredible. I have always found it weird (i use the dual battery app widget) that is shows my transformer at 100% and my battery dock dying. It's never really gotten to 0% yet. Does that mean when the battery dies the USB connections still work as well? So really the extra cost in the keyboard dock is the battery life. God I love this device.

Yup. I've disconnected the battery many times and the usb still works.
I was wondering if these docks had enough juice to charge our N7 tablets? I have the AS851 that I have been using with my Galaxy Nexus but when I put the N7 on there it doesn't charge it.
bump in case any of you guys are in the same situation

I have the AS351and that does not charge the Nexus 7 but works fine with the Galaxy nexus. Very disappointing.
You might be right about the charging capacity. I just noticed the standard Asus brick is 2amps!

I read the specs on the docks and they push out 2A from both the micro-usb and usb port on the back. No idea why it doesn't charge the N7. The microUSB is long enough..it gives a good click when the N7 sits on it. I haven't tried a charging cable only to connect. I don't have one. All mine are data-sync/charging cables.
I don't know if any of the custom kernels for the N7 have "fast charging" as an option/enabled, but I wonder if that would help?

Hi did the N7 actually not charge, or did it simply not say it was charging?
There's a thread on XDA which compares cables/chargers, and unless the USB data pins are connected together the N7 does not show the charging symbol, but would still charge (possibly at a slower rate).
EDIT- ok...not sure if y'all have found this out but the fidelio does in fact charge the N7, just doesn't show a charging icon. And it charges it soooooo slooooowww :-/ It's been on the fidelio for 1/2 hour with only 5% increase. That makes me nervous, so off the fidelio it comes.
Have we determined if the fidelio does in fact charge the N7 but doesn't show it as charging?
