Samsung Galaxy S III Explodes - Galaxy S III General

The Samsung Galaxy S III without doubt is a hot device, in this case literally! According to owner dillo2k10 from Dublin, his Samsung Galaxy S III exploded while docked in a car mount without charger plugged in. Check the full story and morepictures after the break.
So I driving along today with my Galaxy S3 in my car mount when suddenly a white flame, sparks and a bang came out of the phone. I pulled in to look at my phone, the phone burned from the inside out. Burned through the plastic and melted my case to my phone. The phone kept working but without any signal.
I brought it to the carphone warehouse and they told me that they couldnt replace it for me that they had to send it off to be checked out first. No even replacement phone, left with nothing.
The phone was destroyed and it slightly burned a piece of plastic on the inside of my car. And they are refusing to give me a replacement they had to send it off. Probably nothing I can do, but Im really annoyed. That could have burned the side of my face or through my pocket and my leg, or set fire to my bed. It’s very dangerous.
Shortly after that story hit the web, Samsung updated its Samsung Tomorrow blog with a statement:
There have been recent online posts displaying pictures of a Samsung GALAXY SIII that appears to have heat-related damage at the bottom of the device. Samsung is aware of this issue and will begin investigating as soon as we receive the specific product in question.
Once the investigation is complete, we will be able to provide further details on the situation. We are committed to providing our customers with the safest products possible and are looking at this seriously.
Let’s just hope that this is only an isolated case and will never happen again.

Didn't it cross anyone's mind that the car might have over-charged/powered the S3?
Thus it reacting and blowing?

Ok, but it was "docked" and yet not charging?
Could well be the phone exploded, but that doesn't come around often.

Because if they were then it was definitely a sniper... apple fanboy sniper to be exact...
Because if it was due to charging or over charging the battery would have looked all infllated (like when u overcharge the battery)...

At least it wasn't in his pocket. Could've ended up with a singed crotch.

The only burning my S3 causes is when iPhone users see it and they start burning with jealousy, and I can tell some of them really wish they could have a phone like this but the Apple brainwashing has them trapped.

Internal Screen Cracking

Overall I have had a great experience with this phone. It is fast, has great hardware, and even had some faith in Samsung for Froyo fixing some of the problems I was having with it. However, when I arrived at school today I pulled my phone out my pocket to check my text messages, and low and behold my screen is shattered internally. My phone does not have 1 scratch on it and has been babied like crazy. This is completely unacceptable for a ~$600 device meant to be transported in pockets and such. I don't have TEP but I will be up at Sprint raising hell until either I walk out of there with a new Epic or Evo.
Has anyone else had this issue happen or have any luck with Sprint fixing it?
Obviously while in your pocket it was not "babied". Phones don't magically break without a reason.

x2..not to raise any wild hairs, but you obviously bumped it up against something. Sprint will replace your screen, but for $35. And thats only if you purchased the Epic after they changed their insurance rules. If you don't have TEP and you bought the phone before that, I don't think there is anything Sprint will do for you. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Also, I worked in wireless sales for a little while..please don't believe you are going to walk into the store and just magically get swapped out for the Evo. You will get what you have, an Epic. The Epic is an overall better phone anyway, minus the amount of dev support.
Be polite when you go into the store, thats the best way to get someone to side with you.
For what's its worth for those who aren't MOD EDIT: LANGUAGE it was an obvious hardware defect as I take extremey good care of my s***. I got it replaced on the spot free of charge.
Flaming quote removed
I've been called worse, thanks for the compliment! ;D
Welcome to the forum, btw..you probably won't be here long!
What an ironic name you sport.
Congrats on your replacement, though, I guess not everyone's a cynic like us.
I think sprint honers the 1yr manufactures warrantee regardless if you have insurance or not. Just have to fall into that category of a defect or something.
I was voicing concerns over the build quality of the screen in my phone and asking if anyone else had similar experiences to find out if I am the only one this has ever happened too or if there are any known issues before going into the store. Instead people reply with smart ass emoticons . Pardon my frustration . And btw you guys must have a lot of faith in a company that mass produces millions of phones to not even consider the fact that maybe just maybe a sub standard panel was put into a phone. I take it none of you lived through the debacle that was the moment. So since no one else seems to have had any issues with a weak internal screen I shall let the thread die off.

Yes not sitting idle while being sold a substandard piece of hardware designed and manufactured outside of the united states is what's wrong with the economy. I must be a scum bag
Edit:
Also the samsung moment has documented problems with gps, 3g lock ups, faultry graphic drivers etc... I guess I didn't. Drop my phone or d anything to b reak my screen it was in my ocket it was thoroughl lookd over and could not be attributed to negligence you people amaze me
dannyniceboi....
buy american! lol
I have seen this happen with other devices before. It's not always due to negligence.
Even if its not your fault your attitude is still out of line. If you look no one else is like.. oh yeah my screen did the same thing! You really think you should scold a company and a sales rep because they replaced your phone for free?

Who said anything about scloding. I was treated with phenomonal customer service and had no issues with sprint at all.

Omg samsung galaxy a II has self regeneration capabilities.

OK so a few months back, I got into the this blind rage (not gonna go into the details) and the only thing in my hand was my poor galaxy s2. So I threw it very very hard on the floor and the back cover, the battery, and even the sd card came off. Soon afterwards I picked it up and put everything back in place and to my reliefs, the phone worked perfectly. The battery was even,... How do I say this? Misshapen? I had to reshapen? So it could fit in its place. Anyway, everything worked perfectly except the loud speaker was broken. I could use the phone without playing music through loud speaker and never put it in loud speaker mode during conversations. After a few months of this, suddenly the speakers was understandable again. Might not be as good as when I got it brand new but it works now.
Thanks everyone for reading my stupid post up to this point. If you have, you are patient people.
P. S this really happened I am not Kidding.

is it same like my case here, but not my SGS2 but my old Nokia, dropped into water, cant turn on, I kept leave it under sun so the circuit will dry, still not working, so, I leave it in my drawer, for almost 4 month, then I tried to turn on, and voila.........here he comes to live again, for me it happen by coincidence
anyway good for u to have ur phone working as usual again

Yep true story.
Ah, no biggie.
It's the nanobots. When selfdiagnostic finds any HW faults it releases these tiny nanobots that then repair broken circuits.
I can sadly confirm that these regenerational properties are null and void if your SGS2 happens to be run over by the number 19 tram in Oslo - I suspect the tram number and city are irrelevant.
I'd have taken a picture, but looking at the mangled mess exacerbated my toothache, so I binned it.
Glad I've got an extra. I shall test this one under the #11 tram.
Samsung will be in contact with you shortly to recover their lost super-secret prototype Galaxy S2000 (aka enslave-humans-phone)...

Depends on how dead your S2 is.
My S2 was running CM9 when it died. And when it died, it died totally. No response whatsoever, even when plugging in the USB charger. In this case, I believe Samsung has no way of knowing whether I was running a custom ROM or not.
In the end my S2 was replaced free of charge. I even got a free screen change (I pointed out the infamous bright band at the top due to uneven burn out), and a new battery. Props to Samsung. Apple would probably have wanted to rape my wife and sell my firstborn into slavery.
Im sorry about your loss I think mines on its way too... its slowly going:angel:

I should clarify that the motherboard was replaced. However seeing as they also changed the screen (confirmed due to the bright band at where the notification bar would be), I wonder why they didn't just give me a brand new phone. I can tell that the chassis was still my old one due to the presence of my screen protector.

IR receiver is weird (like moving) on top...

Just bought a Note 2014, and I love this device.
But the IR receiver on the top is not really solid, as in I can move it with my finger around, like it's not tightened/fastened down.
All models are like this, or did I get a faulty device?

Talked with the provider, they said I have to take it in.
I hope they will be able to get me a new one. Don't want to get it to Samsung and wait weeks.
Samsung and Quality... meh.
Ps.: This might be important, but the "Do not accept if seal is broken" ... was broken when I got the device.
This carrier is annoying the _HELL_ out of me.
1) You have to buy online from them if don't want to pay more. (WHAT)
2) The postman brings your device, you have to sign a crapload of papers, and you don't even see the box. Then he is off. Yeah, the box is sealed with a plastic bag (which was unopened), but the Note box was opened.
3) You have to wait UP TO 15 (FIFTEEN) days to get your SIM card activated, so you can't even call your carrier.
It's stupid, unprofessional, crappy. (It's TELENOR by the way. The country's worst provider. Well, I think it's the worst in the world. Never, ever sign up to them.

Here is a video of the issue.
You can hear the "clicking" sound as it moves around in the socket.
I did not push it too hard or try to disassemble it in any way. I just tapped it. Tried to make it audible as possible, that's all.
Ps.: I don't want to sound like a crybaby, but this is not a cheap-o 30$ tablet.
Many have this problem with both speaker grills, which should be more annoying. Or the whole frame is loose. So things could well get worse for you, if you get it exchanged.
For the worst case, the loose frame, the manual has the audacity to state that this is normal with time (so no warranty here).

Yeah, mine too is like that.
To be honest, I just want them to verify the issue. Because I'm sure it works, and I won't ever use it.
But God as my witness... if Sammy would see this problem, they would say I used the tablet for digging holes in the ground, to skateboard and whatnot. Because against Sammy, you lose. You are the public enemy no. 1 for them.
Which is kind of sad. (I already have an S3 LTE... damn.)
But Apple is even worse.
Oh well.
So yeah. If they write it down with signature that the issue existed, and I did not cause it, and there is warranty... it's fine with me.
mine is lil loose and i didnt notice till i read your post , but will it works and not gonna fell off , if ya touch it with ya finger and kinda stick and move it fast you will hear tick.

The main problem here is the PRICE.
It costs more than an iPad, which is one overpriced hipster device out there.
Of course it comes with the S-Pen, and the awesome display...
But man. The whole build looks... kinda lame (considering the price). Not that I care about looks too much, as long as if it's built OK and it works OK.
So anyway. For this price, I expect quality.
Both for a tablet, for a phone, or whatever.
If this would be a 30-50$ tablet, I say, sure. Hell, this can happen.
But for THIS price?
Like who checks the products? A monkey plays with them and throws them into the next box or what? Because any person could spot these issues. (Just like the multitouch problem...)
Whatever. I'm still mad at Samsung. I'm ready to fight another battle with them.
They also tripped KNOX at my carrier.... so that will be an another one.
(Asked a newbie support guy to revert my firmware. He said he can do it.
Of course he bricked the phone and when I got it back with 4.3 (S3), it had KNOX 0x1. Which I only discovered later.)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
tl;dr / rant over:
Alright, alright. Rant over.
I'll go to the shop today and ask the rep what to do.
There is a replacement guarantee at them, but they have no tablets left.
And you can only replace it for the same model, or something that costs more.
But this is the highest priced device they have..... so I wonder about the outcome.
Update #1:
Today I spent 4 hours, had several fights with the carrier, etc.
It would be a 2 A4 paper long story, so I'll post it later in case you guys are interested, but will keep it short for now.
- Sammy said in 72 hours you can replace your newly bought device.
- Carrier said I have right to replace in 10 days.
- The Samsung shop's device did not have this problem. Nor the new one that the rep guy took out of the box.
For now, I had to give it to the official service (carrier's) to get a paper that I can replace it.
It sounds silly, it is silly. Will talk about it later.
Anyway. Tablet is in service now, and I made a formal complaint against the shop that refused to replace the device, and also contacted local consumer rights. I hate when companies lie into my face. Especially that 10 day replacement deal. It's a clear lie, if they don't replace my device.
My IR reciever is loose and speaker grills are moving too but honestly aslong as everything else is fine I wouldnt send it for repair thats for sure. It would come back worse thats guaranteed lol. As long as you get a brand new one then thats alright but trust me dont get them to repair it as its not worth the possible defects it will return with.

Let me understand this post.
So you paid a fortune for a device, and you are fine with it if it's plain ****?
Mate. That thing is not supposed to move.
If they mess up, then complain about them, request a refund.
YOU are the customer, YOU pay them.
Be a "scumbag customer" (at least that's what my friend calls me). It's your money, your device, you paid for it.
If they mess up, I will contact the supervisor of the service and the consumer rights service.
Thus, either getting a full refund, or a new device completely with some bonus granted.
Seriously.
What the hell?
Like people are AFRAID of companies.... why?
Before you ask, YES, YOU HAVE A FAULTY DEVICE.
The one at Samsung, and the brand new that they opened, HAD NO MOVING PARTS.
They were so rock solid, you could kill people with them. (or whatever.)
But you know, they was *built OK*. Ours are not built fine, they are faulty devices.
Come on guys, step it up.

There is a thread on it here. But basically when watching/viewing somethjng at night along the bottom of the display white patches are visable on dark display. Lightbleed is common with LCD's and everyone has a little (the note I have now has a bit) but I guess just like the IR blaster evryone has their own limits they are willing to accept.

Now I just have to wait. For days. ;_; :crying:
I didn't notice until coming across this thread but mine is a little loose, too. Frankly, I don't think it's an issue.

Bent Note 4

Hey guys so apparently i own an iPhone 6 Plus. I had my note 4 in my back pocket for maybe an hour or so and when i was looking at it the next day, i noticed it had a slight bend in it starting at the volume rocker. Along with the phone bending, it also sent a hairline crack through the display which is really small but its still there. I tried to get a picture of it but its so fine it was rather hard. My question is do you think the samsung warranty will RMA it and also folks, keep those notes out of your back pocket.
Like i said the pictures dont really show the damage well but trust me it is there.
It was a dumb decision to put the device in your rear pocket. These phones are extremely rigid compared to an Iphone 6.
99% Samsung will laugh you off the phone.
1% They might "Hook you up"
Wow.. Seriously.. Lol. . Why would you have your phone in your back pocket to start with?

Why man why?
On a serious NOTE, i dont think they will cover that in your warranty if you say that you put your phone in your back pocket..

That's a tough one..... But you never know unless you try. Sammy might replace or repair your device. Keep us posted on the outcome

True, but some of these guys are mostly chick these days. So thats probably why.
Maybe benjewman is actually a chick. That could explain it. I put (correction: used to put) my phones in my back pocket occasionally too. Can't really explain why.... just wanted to give a little support. Nobody likes getting kicked when their down.
@benjewman, do you have insurance on it?
no i am not a chick
no i do not really know why i put the phone in my back pocket, it is convenient with such a **** huge phone. yes i do have insurance but id rather not pay for my dumb mistakes.
i think the point your all missing is that the phone still bent when it isnt supposed to and smasung put out a video demonstarting that it shouldnt bend under butt pressure but it still did which is why i think they would take care of it.

I was actually going to post the same video. If they're going to advertise like that, they should stand behind their claims. I'm a guy and I put my phone in my back pocket. Why? Well, it would be awkward to walk with it in a front pocket, I don't always feel like carrying it around, and I don't want a belt holster. The only other option would be to carry a man-bag and I'd really rather not.
Edit: I should add that I always take it out of my pocket before sitting down. I just hold it or sit it close by if I'm sitting.

What i am the only loser that carries in the back pocket?
I manage an entire shop the reason I bought an note 4 so that I could have all my documentation with me and take quick notes where else would you put it? I'm only a hundred and sixty pound guy but I must have sat on it 200 times by now and never had a problem. If you say a clip on holster and give him grief then I just don't know what to tell all you geeks, old men and chair surfers. Holsters snag on everything flipping your phone out and when out of style with the Dukes of Hazard and there 4"folding knife. Your front pocket pinches something I would rather not have pinched unless its my wife andd your front shirt pocket looks worse than a pocket protector and also falls out.
Just use your insurance its not like it was a stupid mistake that's what you get it for.
So flame away lol.
But seriously just have it replaced
Send from STOCK NOTE 4

finally some one that agrees with me and hasnt called me a fat chick. i see it is they say their product can live up to a specific type of abuse and i proved it cant so they should therefor be liable for it. at least a little bit
Why would you be surprised that the phone will bend if you sit on it? I mean... isn't it obvious?
Whole thread is nonsense. Your a bone head plain and simple. Would never carry a $600 device in my back pocket.
Look at this. ...... Galaxy Note 4 Bend Test: http://youtu.be/SDIu-GcX5aM
If I were you, I'd call and tell them it should not have bent from what is normal use. You didn't drop it, and you didn't put it through anything any one of us wouldn't also. They should (should being the important word; who knows what they'll do) fix it, free of charge.
Good luck.
Edit: Wait a minute. Were you walking around, or did you sit on it? Because if you sat on it, you kind of deserved it.

I don't want to go off topic but that mentality is partially, if not mostly in place because of the older generations bad parenting. Simple as that. Children, teenagers behaviors are a big reflection of the level of parenting they had. I do agree with you but the reason for that mentality had to be made clear.
As for the OP, I'm willing to say you got a "bad" device. Just as anything can go wrong with any piece of technology or car. This definitely isn't a known issue so definitely an odd occurrence. But as others had said, I would never put a phone in a back pocket. Not only can you risk breaking it, but it can also fall out.
Please don't sit on your phone and then act surprised when you damage/destroy it. It is an electronic device. I am looking around my house at all my electronics and I am having a hard time finding one that I would sit on (Laptop, Astro A40 Headset, Monitor, Scanner, Printer, TV, PS4, TiVo, NEST Thermostat, Blender, George Forman Grill). I mean really?
Solution for not wanting to put your phone in one of your front pants pockets: STOP WEARING SKINNY JEANS!
