Looking for an HTC Trophy - Trophy General

Not sure if this is allowed, not trying to advertise or anything though, I just don't think that many Trophy users go to the MP. If it's not allowed, then just delete.
I've been looking for an HTC Trophy for some time. I have a MP thread where I have stated such: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1661366. If anyone wants to trade for a Droid RAZR, or I do have a 32GB Zune HD with limited edition Halo 3 box, please PM me.
(Like I said, just trying to inform Trophy owners, because I doubt most check the MP. If not allowed, please delete.)

Once I receive the trophy and play around with it, see how well the signal is in my area, and my overall opinions on it, I may take you up on that. I'm using an Incredible 2 right now and have 0 service at my house when I had full service with my bionic. If the trophy lacks signal strength then I'm gonna have to ditch it.

Lockett, have you tried to update your PRL with *228 option 2 (You can do this with all of your Verizon phones)? Also, go to Settings=>Cellular [Verizon] and set the roaming mode to CMDA only (otherwise it will attempt to find a GSM tower). Having it in Global mode is great for 911 service, but that's about it in the US.
The Incredible 2 is also a World Phone like the Verizon Trophy, so you can try the same thing. I think in Android, you go to settings, cellular and there should be a roaming option to change to CMDA only somewhere. Try that first because I get the funny feeling both the Trophy and Incredible 2 will have the same problem unless you do. I have crappy reception at my house, and if I leave my World Phones like my Touch Pro2 or my VZW Trophy in Global Mode, it will always try to pickup a GSM tower that is closer.
Just an idea, might be worth a shot.
Not to hijack the thread or anything swbf2lord, some people have done trades in this sub-forum, so its worth a shot to draw attention to both threads.

Thanks for the tip. You can also dial on the dialer *#*#4636#*#* to access testing mode, go to phone settings, and select cdma only. That's what I usually do when using world phones. I don't know if this is just an android trick or if it'll work on WP7 too.

I have a brand NEW HTC Trophy, never been turned on, still has all the protective plastics on it for sale for 125$. Retail is over 400, and 179 right now with a 2 year contract.
Wife is a verizon employee, and won this phone last week running a company sponsored 5k. We both have Galaxy Nexus phones, so obviously this phone is a down grade for us. Could be looking for an MP3 player, but not a microsoft one, sorry :/

Try to send him a private message. Read my private message.

EVDO Sucks Will there be a GSM Model?

Why is it that all the coolest gadgets get to one of the worst carriers first? I love the specs of the Supersonic (EVO 4G) or whatever you want to call it. The problem is with Sprint. I've tested HTC EVDO products (HTC Titan) back to back with HTC GSM products (HTC TyTN). The CDMA products suck battery life much more quickly than the GSM products. If found this on almost every Sprint and Verizon CDMA smartphone. This is probably why the the Supersonic has a larger battery.
Also, it is true that some CDMA products do not allow simultaneous data and voice transmission. This may not be true of this device because it will be able to do CDMA for phone and WimaX for data. I am very interested in this device but I'd be much more interested if this device were on AT&T or even T-Mobile.
I am loving the HD2 running on AT&T. But I'd love more internal memory, the front facing camera, the kickstand, the better camera, etc.
sprint is the cheapest carrier, but valid point with battery useage. I also don't particularly like having to get an "OK" from sprint to change phones. Wish you could use a SIM card.
question though... how often are you browsing the web or using data while talking on the phone? I can't think of one instance in my past 10 years with a cell phone that I needed data while talking. If you're on the net, your data gets put on hold untill after your phone call is over. Back when I had dialup, my phone service offered a similar feature, and cdma does the exact same thing.
As far as everything else, speeds, coverage, dropped calls, annoying but I hear complaints from customers from all the different carriers, it's a cell phone thing.
OH! and where's my damn sprint iPhone? I'm calling BS on cdma getting all the cool toys... I had to wait a year before sprint finally got an android phone, while t-mobile / att had all types of phones that could be used on their network *rage*
let us have our moment in the spotlight for once.... sheesh
hold on boy
i think sprint is the better than att all the way. at least here in San Francisco.
The plans are better than att.
i have friends with their iphones and their internet sucks compare with my htc pro 2 on sprint.
And htc evo data details.
4g + data= Works
3g + data= No
wifi+data=Works
I can't wait for this phone.
No matter what carrier get the cool things first there is always some spoiled brat shouting out loud.

And this @ OP.
I really really hope there is a GSM version coming out soon.
lol there is gonna be a GSM version no doubt. there will definitely be a variant of the Supersonic(aka EVO 4G here in the US for Sprint) in Europe/overseas NO DOUBT that you'll only be able to use on EDGE here but there will probably also be a GSM variant here in the states for another carrier that is basically the same phone but a little different and with different radios or whatever. an example would be the supersonic for t-mobile, lets say their first HSPA+ compatible phone or something, they call it whatever they want and HTC basically makes it for them using the core parts of the supersonic and keeps everything like android and whatnot and just changes up the radio and changes CDMA to GSM and puts in tmo's 3g bands in the radio, and whatever other physical changes t-mo may want like the buttons and whatever.

Last time i checked, Sprint (and by extension CDMA) usually gets last dibs on the cool phones. Name them...Touch Diamond/Pro/Pro 2, HTC Hero, Nexus 1. They never even carried the Touch Diamond 2 till today.
it is true, I wish there were sim cards.. but other than that, in the bay area, sprint kicks ass!
I have never gotten one dropped call since I got my hero, and I talk 2000+ minutes a month. I have 3g almost everywhere.
Also, no matter what people say, sprint has amazing customer service. I mean, at least you don't get put on the line with some indian guy half way around the world who just tells you to turn your phone off then on again...
oh and, at&t just sucks... no matter what hahah I'm glad sprint is stepping up to the plate. they offer amazing deals, great phones (as of now) and I think, are starting to move up in the world

AT&T does suck, but I'm stuck on them. I use Sprint for my data service (aircards FTW) and they have AMAZING customer service. Whereas AT&T just *****es about everything and tells you how wrong you are, then tells you how happy they are you stay them. If they didn't have such fast 3G (which in my rural area isn't crowded, so it is reliable) I would switch to Sprint in a heartbeat. Too bad EvDo pretty much sucks

Or the Nexus
I think the battery suck issue is not so bad given the fact that you can get almost unlimited voice, data, and messaging (of all sorts), plus turn by turn GPS+traffic routing, for $70/mo, less with discounts.
Where's AT&T or TMo's 4G network? I don't hear them actually deploying LTE in any other market other than testing. Kudos to Sprint... psyched for EVO.
ok, so the deal with this phone, ive been reading up on the specs, 4g (6mb/s) is 10x faster then 3g(300mb/s) i run off clearwire internet witch happens to run off the same exact wi-max as sprint and let me tell you, it is FAST. the processor in the phone is a massive 1ghz! for a phone, thats a overkill, plus 588mb of ram... i cant wait to try to overload this phone... probaly take 50+ apps running at once... 4.3 inch touch screen, 8 mega pixel camera, android 2.1 (unless they release a update before the phone is released) i say all in all this phone is going to be by far the fastest android phone on the market, and PS: the HTC HD2 IS the same exact phone just running WinMo 6.5, slightly better processor but clocked the same, same ram, same screen size, its the same phone with a slightly different button layout.
you can check out the side by side specs here

Wrong OS, mate.
he did say "variant"
as in its not exactly the same but close, a knockoff, cousin, whatever. everything is almost identical spec wise just the os is different. thus its a variant. if GSM'ers want the evo in a gsm model. you could help with the port of android to the hd2. just a thought.
.
It's not really a variant. The OS makes them completely different. One is full of future; another is just about dead. Unless someone could port a high quality and well tested Android into it, then it would be a different story.
Well I the closes variant to the Evo 4g is the Desire or Nexus One. If you can do away with the 4.3 inch screen, 4g Wimax, 8MP camera and the extra memory. Well the year is young, so who knows.
Sprint is great in Minneapolis.
Come to papa Evo.

EVO 4G Would it work on Boost?

Im just curious if i were to buy this phone off contract if i could have it activated with boost? i know 4G would be out of the question but would it get 3G if possible?
You'd have to wait for people to find a way to get it to recognize Boost's connection settings. My Touch Pro, for example, required at least a dozen changes in the registry and connection setup in order to work with Metro PCS.
Unless Android explicitly prohibits this, and I kind of doubt that, there could be a way to get this phone to work with Boost if somebody were to try.
you can get the hero on boost I talked to a guy that did it, evdo never worked from what I remembered, had to get into the programming but it wasn't the hardest thing ever. It will take a lot of patience and lot of work to get all that sorted out.
If you are wanting a quick port, look elsewhere, the hero has been done, might go that route, but the method should be very much similar with the evo.
I'll do my normal speel once I get my evo in how to get into the programming menus, what works, what doesn't ..how to get your msl and the lot, I can try and help with the programming it's self, but I'm sure there are lots of others that can take it from there.
Technically any Sprint CDMA phone can work on Boost CDMA, it's just that Sprint chooses what phones go on what network. SO the cool phones go on the contract network (Sprint) while the prepaid network (Boost) gets the "crappy" phones. This is why i'm considering switching to a GSM carrier so i can get a phone of choice and just pop in a SIM.
I used to know some folks **cough** cough** who could do all this switcheroo on certain phones to Boost CDMA but the Evo is a new beast which would be hard. The phones are getting more complex and locked down more and more.
Really all it takes is for Sprint not to lock down the Evo ESN's to specific plans/features/codes in their system...but that's NEVER going to happen, mate.

I LOVE my new EVO but....

... <rant> I am thoroughly pissed off at three service providers. #1, T-Mobile because their service rep told me over the phone that they could make it work on their network before I bought it, #2) Verizon because they told me that the phone could be activated on their network and all I had to do was take it to one of their stores with a tech (they lied), and #3) Sprint for their attempted monopoly. Why are we, as a user community putting up with this kind of monopolistic activity? <end rant>
All that said, can someone offer any hope that I can get this phone activated on any network but sprint? I thought that CDMA was a standard.
Feeling angry, stupid, and taken advantage of....
Paul
It can only be used on Sprint.
I don't see why you would want to pay more for verizon service when you can already use their towers, well you already do when you roam, but use verizons over sprints, better to stay with sprint and pay less money for more.
You have every reason to feel stupid.
How is Sprint running a monopoly? By having an exclusive phone? Wtf are you saying?

Canadian law.... what a wonderful idea.... that someone should actually own their phone and be able to use it on any compatible network.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696073
Do that. That will make it so your phone uses verizon towers.
The t-mobile guy you talked to doesn't know what he's talking about. They use GSM, a completely different radio technology.
Verizon...while it may be possible in the future, it doesn't appear possible yet. If you're dissatisfied and really want verizon, return it and get yourself that new DroidX that was announced.
Sprint is no more a monopoly for having an exclusive phone than Verizon for having the Droid, Eris, etc; T-Mobile for having the G1, Nexus, etc; or ATT for the iPhone. Sure it'd be nice to have the new smartphones on any carrier but the truth is, it's just not that way here in the US just yet...and hasn't been for years. The fact that you didn't look around and realize it is nobody's fault but your own.
Where do you people come from?! Seriously I wish the internet came with real names and age group of everyone who posts anything online (excluding those of course who have some kind of medical questions that they don’t want to broadcast to the world). Yes this is a page for tech geeks but must we be so rude to those who don’t know what we know?
We behave as if understanding technology is a given and anyone who doesn’t know the things we know, must of course be stupid. I honestly would love to know if the smart-asses of the net are all a bunch of lonely (friendless and dateless) souls with an abundance of tech savvy but no people skills. I’m not going extreme just over this thread but rather over this entire forum and ones like it.
Peager, you were given wrong info and those reps who told you so, should have known better. Sprint along with Verizon use a type of communication technology called CDMA which is not compatible with the tech the other U.S. carriers use (and most other carriers around the world) called GSM. Now even within the 2 different types, there are different radio frequencies that different carriers use and that different phones are capable of using. Some phones can be used from one GSM carrier to another GSM carrier (or from CDMA to CDMA with some CDMA phones) but as far as I know, you’ll always end up not having access to 3G data when you make the switch.
If you’d like to know more, just do a Google or Wikipedia search on CDMA and GSM and you’ll quickly learn all you want to know about them and then if you so wish; you can join the ranks and become an xda Android jerk to the next guy who comes along and doesn’t know what you now know. In other words, I think too many people forget that we all have stupid questions at one point or another, on one subject or another. I'm sure there are a few super geeks who were made to feel mighty stupid while asking questions to a doctor or any other professional in other industries.
I think people are more baffled by his claim of Sprint running a monopoly

For those of us who have been on the forum a while, these issues seem dumb. They are not. We are being screwed by the manufacturers and the carriers but we don't see it that way. John's thoughts are not dumb. I just got done writing a letter to the chairman of the FCC asking that the FCC require carriers to make smartphones compatible with more than one 3G network in the US.
Let's start by discussing GSM phones. In the US, AT&T uses UMTS 850 & 1900 Mhz for 3G service, T-Mobile uses the AWS 1700 Mhz frequency for 3G data service. There is absolutely no reason that HTC smartphones cannot have radios that can handle 850, 1700, 1900, and 2100 Mhz. In this way the phones would be good for 3G data in the US on either T-Mobile or AT&T. Why does this matter?
Whether you know it or not, you are paying at least $500 for a smartphone. If you buy it out right without a contract you're going to pay that much. If you buy on a two year contract, you are getting about a $200 discount. This discount is covered by fees that you'll be paying for data over the next two years. If you terminate early, you'll pay around $200 to do so. At the end of your two year contract, you must stay with your current carrier if you want to continue to get 3G data.
It is abundantly clear that HTC is in collusion with the carriers to not provide unlocked phones that will work on AT&T or T-Mobiles network. A few years ago, you could buy an international unlocked phone (such as the HTC TyTn or TyTn II) which had the 850, 1900, and 2100 Mhz radios which could work in Europe and the US on AT&T's network. However, now HTC only makes unlocked international phones with 900 and 2100 Mhz radio. In other words, if you want the latest HTC phone to work on AT&T or T-Mobile, you have to wait till either AT&T or T-Mobile has it. Sometimes, these carriers don't get the phone you want at all. For example, the HTC HD2 which is one of the best phones HTC ever made has not been offered to AT&T. Fortunately, Telstra in Australia got the HD2 and Australia has the same 850 Mhz frequencies of AT&T. I bought one from Australia and am using on AT&T which is my favorite carrier at least for data. What a pain in the posterior.
The same problem exists with CDMA phones. The CDMA carriers have made it tough for one to switch from Verizon to Sprint or visa versa. There's no SIM card (Why not the technology exists?) You have to take you phone to someone that can hook you up on the different network. With the EVO 4G it would be stupid to go to Verizon because they don't have Wimax and the 4G component of the EVO 4G won't work.
Furthermore, I have the HD2 but I wish I could buy its cousin the Supersonic (aka EVO 4G) and run it on a GSM network (either AT&T or T-Mobile). I cannot do this because HTC has made an exclusive deal with Sprint.
These exclusive hardware deals and the 2 year contracts are inherently anticompetitive. We should be able to chose the phone we want and run it on the network we want. That would be competitive. I have asked the FCC to not give approval to GSM smart phones unless they have more than one 3G radio that works in the US. If this were the case, a buyer could decide to pay full price for the phone (i.e, no 2 year contract) and jump from carrier to carrier at will based on the price, quality, and features of the carrier's network. This is roughly the way Europe works.
In Europe most countries use 2100 Mhz for 3G (though I hear they are going to begin using 900 also). For years one has been able to buy unlocked phones and do month to month contracts. One can jump from Orange to O2 to Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile) at will and the 3G data will work.
Europe has had video voice calling for years. The European prices aren't any cheaper than they are in the US but you get more speed, more features, and more choices. We're getting screwed here but everyone is asleep. They are too dumb to see what has happened. The front facing cameras you now see on the EVO 4G have been around for years in Europe on their robust networks.
Another thing that makes me upset about HTC phones is the lack of internal memory. Memory is cheap. Yet the EVO 4G has only 1GB? What the heck? Even Motorolla gets it. Their new Droid has 8G plus an SD card slot. I wish the Droid was GSM. I'd buy it in a heart beat.
HTC is probably the best smartphone manufacturer. However it took them years to get a decent sized screen on their devices. It took them years to get a 3.5mm jack on their devices. How long will it take to get 8, 16, or 32GB on their devices? Probably another 2 years. Oh wait, I almost forgot, they actually got 8G in the Verizon Incredible. They probably only did this because Verizon forced them to.
Unle
So Verison won't activate it? The phone is CDMA which is what Verison uses.

Not sure you can do that since Verizon and Sprint have different types of networks. Maybe a Droid 2 Global?
Verizon and Sprint actually do have the same type of network (they both use CDMA), but it would be next to impossible to get a phone from one network activated on the other. Unfortunately, it isn't like the SIM cards, where you can just unlock the phone and put in another carrier's SIM. From what I hear, Verizon won't activate an ESN (device identifier) that isn't from a device they have sold.
Not sure about Sprint, but I haven't heard of anyone successfully doing it in a LONG time.
actually, they dont operate on different network types. sprint and verizon both definitely run on CDMA, and their phones can technically function on either network. the problem is that the IMEI's for each network are only valid on their respective network. If your IMEI is not on the particular network then it will not activate on that network.
the general rule of thumb with sprint and verizon phones: if it doesnt have the corresponding carrier branding on the phone in some fashion, then it will not activate on that particular network.
Also, carrier reps for both of these carriers will not add in your IMEI no matter how much money you say you will throw at them.

My apologies for being misinformed.
I use to have a BB storm and once you "unlocked" it you could use it on other networks. I seem to recall a lively discussion on crackberry.com regarding which networks with which it would work. Now perhaps that's because the storm had CDMA/GSM capabilities, but I'm not sure.
I had a Storm as well. When you unlocked it, you could get it to work on AT&T and T-Mobile, because it was a global phone with a SIM card. You couldn't get 3G on any of the US Carriers, since the 3G frequencies are different in the US and in the rest of the world (so the data would be confined to slow 2G rates).
I did see a rumor recently that T-Mobile eventually did something to lock US Storms out of their networks.
http://crackberry.com/t-mobile-killing-service-unlocked-storm-devices
If you get the Droid 2 Global, you should be able to unlock it and run it on AT&T or T-Mobile with a SIM card. You most likely won't be able to get 3G, though. Probably not worth it.
Hopefully, when Verizon switches to LTE some time in the next year, the phones will be compatible across carriers. From what I understand, Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T are all switching to LTE. It sounds like Sprint is investigating, and my guess is that they will go that direction (ditching WiMax in the long-term). However, I wouldn't put it past the carriers to lock other US devices out of their networks.
Regardless, this won't help much with getting a device to run on Sprint. I'm sure that there will be some more cool Android Devices coming out for Sprint in the future.
A colleague of mine recently activated a DROID X on Sprint, but it was a hassle all around.
Programming the phone through QPST was annoying but doable, it was getting the phone's ESN added to the Sprint database that was a real hassle.
Eventually, my colleague had to work with somebody in Overland Park, KS. (Sprint's HQ) to get it done. After 11 phone calls to Sprint Customer Service (which were totally clueless), he finally sent a FedEx to Steve Elfman's office (President Network Operations) before anybody at Sprint was willing to even consider the addition. A few days after the Fedex was received, somebody from Mr. Elfman's office called my colleague back and worked with him to accomplish the addition.
After all is said and done, my colleague is happy that his DROID X is now on Sprint, but he has said a few times now that it really was not worth the effort that he had to put into it to get it accomplished.

After all is said and done, my colleague is happy that his DROID X is now on Sprint, but he has said a few times now that it really was not worth the effort that he had to put into it to get it accomplished.

Hmm, interesting that it can be done though!

[Q] I would like to see a Sprint Android World Phone.

I don't know about every one else out there but, I would like to see Sprint with a Android World Phone. Verizon has two. I sometimes travel outside of the U.S. and I would like to be able to talk on my phone. I hate changing over to the touch pro 2 to do so. This was just my two cents. Does anyone this this will ever happen?
Definitely agree with you that Sprint needs a world phone!
I have been a long time Sprint customer (9 years) and although they have coverage in some countries, so far it has been dismal! I just got back from England and it was frustrating not being able to use my EVO but instead had to use my back up Nokia with a sim card slot.
I was just at Best Buy today inquiring if the Verizon Thunderbolt is a world phone (this is the only phone that is similar to the EVO that I am willing to switch to). Won’t know for a few more days when the demos hit the store. I am seriously considering switching carriers, it’s just hard to find a phone that is similar to my EVO! Also I have been quite frustrated with the lack of 4G in doors! I was just at Corner Bakery this morning and I was streaming the Chelsea / Liverpool game with my evo to my Elocity Android tablet and 4G coverage was just horrible inside. I walk outside and bam, 3 4G bars.
I would look at the Verizon Droid pro or Droid 2 (?, not sure if I have those model numbers correct) but I can’t stand motoblur. I also don’t like the fact that those are not 4G as I tether to my tablet and laptop on a regular basis and I love the 4G speed over 3G for streaming.
I leave for the Philippines in 2 weeks and yet again I will need to use my Nokia. I tried my Evo last time while in the Philippines and it didn’t work their either. I don’t like T-Mobile or AT&T due to the lack of unlimited data (T Mobile has a 5 Gig cap on thier unlimited data before they throttle you) and these would be the most logical choices since they use a sim card.
Other countries I have had a lack of coverage: Brazil, Peru, Hong Kong, India and a few others)
If anyone has any suggestions, I am definitely open to hearing them.
I've also been a long time sprint user 7 years. Look at the HTC inspire 4g from ATT. It's almost just like the EVO. Bad battery. 1250 compared to EVO 1500. It hasn't come out yet. If sprint comes out with a Android world phone just like the EVO or better that would be my new phone.
The EVO you wish you had
