I got a WD hard drive. Problem is it falls asleep and wakes back up when watching videos. So this hard drive is a WD 1TB USB, and no power connected to it except the USB like some of the others. Is there a setting to make sure this hard drive does not sleep?
Cause the video and audio get all ****ed up with a 3 sec lag when connected HDMI to the TV. BTW A500 build is latest US ics build. Not rooted. Any ideas people???

You can try setting your sleep policy to never sleep. But usually that's for Wifi. Another setting is for the display itself to never sleep when you use your drive.
For a 1tb, I'm surprised you can get it to run properly from just USB pwr. My 1tb WD requires an external pwr source.
I use a Toshiba Touro 1TB drive and a Samsung S2 1TB drive with no problems on my tab, no external power.... Does use up the power in about 4hours with solid movie watching though...
I wonder if the OPs drive isn't getting enough power through to it from the tab...

My WD 1TB works very well too but it's also externally powered.

I will confirm if the HDMI problem is usual, cause I know people have been having problems with that, I will be getting my HDMI cable in the mail soon, will let you know. I have sometimes experienced slow downs on mine as well. Have you tried formatting the Xoom?

The USB port is very weak on my Xoom (and others, I've read). You need to plug the USB cable into a MOTHERBOARD MOUNTED USB port to make it work reliably. Using a front panel USB port, or any other port that is cabled off of the motherboard, can cause problems.
I personnaly mount my xoom into the front panel USB port and have had no problems with it so far.
i too use the USB ports on the front of my tower and it works fine...
My USB cable that came with it was the problem, used a different one and it was transfering fine

I'm looking for something that will let me access all my music and movies from my nexus 10. Something that won't need any PC set up our access. I gave my laptop to my girlfriend and use my nexus 10 and galaxy nexus exclusively. I bought a GoFlex 3TB Home yesterday thinking that I could plug it in to my router and a ton of storage fit music and movies. I returned today because after a day of trying to set it up I could not get anything close to a smooth experience. It took me half the day just to register it with seagates servers (the drive is unusable until registered) and the go flex android app is a joke.
Does anyone have a Wi-Fi hard drive set up that doesn't go through a PC? I thought about picking up a go flex satellite but after the goflex home I have no faith in seagates system.

I was looking at these. They have a bridged mode as well so you can maintain the Internet connection.

I just picked up one of the Kingston 64gb with drives. Really liking it so far and have had a good experience streaming movies from it, not a ton of storage but would recommend. I got it mainly for traveling with the kids for them to watch movies.
My router has some sort of DLNA thing and a USB port; not entirely sure if it would be usable for storage though, but it should be fine for media streaming.
I use BubbleUPnP to stream media from my PCs to my nexus 10. Its available in the Google Play Store

I picked up the seagate goflex satellite for $100 during the holidays. Stock, It's definitely hindered by the lousy software/firmware, but you can replace it, either on your own or for $35 you can get a package from www.hackseagatesatellite.com. Essentially, you are installing a linux server system on it. You can run SMB, webDav, FTP, iTunes server, or DLNA system. Multiple devices can also stream from it simultaneously.
I haven't tried it, but it also has dropbox and eyefi integration.
The hardware is not fast enough to stream a 30 gb 1080p mkv file. But if you transcode it with handbrake to a reasonable size, it streams well with only an occasional stutter with the stock player.
If you use BS player in LAN mode, and set the buffer to large, It plays the entire 1080p movie without any hiccups or pauses. (Avatar plays beautifully. I am also undervolted and underclocked with the KTmanta kernel)
I'm not quite sure if this would fit your situation but try using a NAS (Network Attached Storage). Then just find an app on the play store that supports streaming from one and viola! You can even take it a step further and download movies onto your N10, then transfer them to the NAS, allowing anyone with access to view/stream content.
I know Newegg has a dedicated section for NAS setups, but I'd consider buying a NAS enabled hard drive bay and tossing in a few old drives. Upgrade-ability + Customization :good:
An additional bonus to using NAS is you do not need a router that supports it in comparison to DLNA /USB support.
I would agree with this, I have the same setup - using an old version of Dlink's DNS-323.
Well I know its been talked about in the other threads of the possibilities. So now since we have the devices here, are proceeding with unlocking and rooting the devices. Has anyone had luck?
Sadly I do not have a OTG cable yet to test this but at least wanted to start somewhere.
Edit: Yes it is, see post below for link. Device needs to be rooted for it to work!
Says he was able, after root, to mount 2 drives simultaneously.

Brilliant! Thanks
Has anyone try this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.homeysoft.nexususb.importer
It doesn't require root so it should be good for stock users.
I can confirm a stock non rooted N7 I threw in a USB flash drive and read files and played a movie real quick earlier just to see if it all worked, didn't try much more then that but can try some more tomorrow. Still busy transferring and reinstalling apps from old N7.
I cannot get Nexus Media Importer to work on stock. It reports all memory sticks as protected.
I have a non rooted stock nexus 7 2013. The media importer doesn't work for me also.

Now rooted using Stickmount, still not working. The drive can be seen but it seems only small files can be viewed, and you can't copy them or do anything with them. Non of my, larger, movie files show up.
I was able to copy a 3GB movie file from a flashdrive to the onboard memory with no issues. Maybe try a powered USB hub? I didn't have to in this case but it might help.
I tried to read an external hard drive and had to use a powered USB hub to even have it mount. Alas, couldn't read anything. Don't know if it's because the hard drive was formatted NTFS or because it was 750GB.
USB OTG Helper works for me. It also supports NTFS drives.

Can anyone tell if it's possible to to use OTG while wireless charging the device?
Need this for my car dashboard tablet replacement.
I think the problem with that would be that it would drain after than it charges. Qi charging doesn't have great amperage.

works for me as well, I am wondering if there will be a root flash-able mod like the original N7 had to turn OTG on.
Why does Google not allow OTG to be active out of box? Is the lure of trying force people into using the cloud that strong? Clouds drain more battery compared to local content and wifi connections do not have 100% coverage like local does.
The reality is the reason this device is priced at near break-even pricing IS the cloud, so this is why there is no SD slot or full OTG, out of box. Most people do not mod, so most people will be part of their cloud control strategy. I would rather pay $50 more and let Google make a profit on the device, that way I could have a micro sd slot and OTG out of box. Curse Google and their quest for content control and data mining! :silly:
Earlier I said it wasn't working, without knowingly changing anything both Stickmount and Nexus Media Importer now work. I am rooted and perhaps Stickmount is making NMI work.

Stick Mount works 100% fine for me, just watched a movie from my thumb drive. I am stock+Root. Open file system and on SD card look at the USB Storage folder if you are unfamiliar with Stick Root.

Yes and I also used it with a USB External HD and it worked fine there, too.
I had issues with OTG on my first N7 2013. It was a flaky connection and would go into a connect/disconnect loop and then just stop all together. I returned it and picked up a different. That one seems to work fine.
Stock, not rooted, and using Nexus Media Importer.
Some people may want to try rebooting their N7 as well.... If you look at the NMI app in the Play Store the developer knows there are a few issues with Android 4.3 when first using the app.

Has anyone ever managed to get an external dvd drive working on an Android Yoga Book? I would have thought hooking it up with an OTG connector and a Y cable also going into a power bank to give the drive some juice would work. Would be great to hear if anyone has got it to work.

Android Verizon works (With Drawbacks) Windows Verizon should work with a powered hub

Yes, for the android version most portable DVD drives that have AV mode will work.
however, there are some serious drawbacks.
1. you need a powered OTG hub as every drive I've tried, even the low powered portable ones need too much power, it often looks like its working but will have issues spinning or turn off randomly. there may be lower powered ones now but I havent found one with low enough draw not to need a powered hub.
2. its not great for movies. it only works with DVDs that are not encrypted (a lot of low budget or independent DVDs are unencrypted) or data discs with your own video files on them. (if you try to play an encrypted video it will either error out or will play the video but it will look scrambled and will blank out a lot.)
3. even if you do find an unencrypted DVD its not really straightforward to play. without a proper DVD software for android you need an app that at least will play the DVD files (MX player worked for me, I suspect VLC would work as well) the DVD basically opens like a data disk with a bunch of oddly named files, you just have to dig through and find the largest file and that's usually the main video.
as far as I can find there do not seem to be any video players for android that can decrypt a DVD (regular DVD players have built in decryption and PCs use software so its not something you generally think about until it doesn't work)
all this being said, for anyone with the windows version ignore everything above and you will probably be ok with a powered USB hub and some DVD software.
**Edit, I cant change the title now but I typed Verizon instead of Version by mistake. Sorry about that***
Hello, I have shield tv 2017. I moved the installation files to a usb stick as storage or rather internal memory, for a long time.
By mistake, I simply unplugged the USB key from the Shield TV. I haven't used the option to unplug from Storage. Since then it is no longer recognized by the Shield. Nor by a pc.
I had in particular all the metadata of the server plex on it. Plex no longer connects to the server (nas) and I am really afraid of having lost all the metadata ... (working days ....)
The shield no longer sees the USB key.
Do you think there is a way to recover files from this key? A method, a utility can be?
I really hope you can help me.
Did you try powering off your shield tv, and then plugging your USB back in and powering back on?
