Specifically a popping noise, not coming from the speakers, middle of the tablet on the right side in the back. I noticed that the usb flash drive I use was getting a little warm, so I took it out, a few mins after I did, my tablet made a popping noise near the same area. Freaked me out because thismorning my screen flickered, went fuzzy, and then blacked out for about a minute. This is a refurb, wondering if I should send it back...

Send it back. Sounds like it's shorting out.
I've had something like this and my acer tab is about 4 months old and bought new from bestbuy uk (before thay pulled out of the uk).
Was searching for a new wallpaper with wallbase app when my tab made a fizzie sound and screen fuzzed and blured then screen went off (seem like the old days when you tried higher mhz/refresh rate on a monitor), about a minute later the screen came back on, it made me panic and i still worry about it, have hard reset my tab and have no other problems with it but still have strange nasty one off flickers, would like to see if others have had this strange fizzal/fuzzy/bluring blackout?
I still think its some sort of refresh/mhz rate to the screen.

No such issue here. Go check a demo unit to compare. I think you need to return it.
Plastic on top bends and creeks on mine...

Saw this in a search, same problem here. Is this really not a common issue? It's terrible when you pick up your $800 tablet and it makes an awful noise like it's going to break.
Just got mine out my bag to check but it's solid.
Noticed a gap in mine today before seeing this thread. What bothers me most is the creak/crack if I press a particular part of the screen. (Jump button in Cordy) .

The creak is absolutely annoying.
I think i may just buy a transformer and take the xoom back and save $400.
Sigh.
i have also noticed mine has started doing this...
I know mine has made this noise before but it comes and goes. Its a bit annoying but doesn't seem to be consistently happening.

If you find the area, you won't be able to ignore it.
Try this: Go to the metal part on the left side where it starts below the volume/plastic, put your thumb on the edge and "pry" that area away from the glass (towards the back) report back with noise.

Turns out it didn't matter. I ended up taking my wifi xoom back and exchanged it for another one. My original started showing dust under the screen! Looked on here and seems to be one of many occurrences...

Nice, my power button only works 1/3 of the time at the most, so it's likely getting exchanged anyway, maybe returned.
Same here creak/crack from left side,
Hi guys! I just took my new Tab out for a spin for the first time in direct sunlight. It worked pretty much as expected, totally OK!
But there is this smudgy rainbow-colored, oily-looking thing under the screen. Just like when you press to hard on a display with your finger, you know?
Has anyone else got it? I thought it dissapered but I realised it was the sun that had gone so it's probably still there. I suspect I will have a hard time getting the bestbuy staff to realise what I even mean. I'm just her on vaccation and english isnt my native language. Can you somehow see the effect without the sun? Kinda of cloudy today and I'm leaving on thursday
Should I even bother? Will it get worse? Will it dissappear?
Could that be the liquid crystal layer?
It's in the center of the screen and maybe a cm in diameter, growing and shrinking while you touch (other and that area of) the display. Oily, transluscent. Only visible in direct sunligt.
Last Sunday my wife and I are in the car I went out while she's playing with it.when I came back she's done and I pick it up, I saw this like an oily stuff like what u said.I ask her if she accidentally push it hard she said no.u can see it clear under the sun.I panic and I decided to call bestbuy regarding exchanging my tab. Then my wife took a look on it she hold it using her thumb in the side then suddenly its gone.its like an oil. Just an advice do not bend ur tab side to side ok.

Its probably just the petroleum convertor abstractor leaking a little bit of petroleum from the manifolds. I suggest using Penzoil or Mobile1 on your next tablet fillup.

Lmao that was pretty good. that is all.
I know this problem has been talked about thoroughly, but I'd like to ask you something...
I have a Galaxy Tab 10.1 which immediately showed the problem, at first the rings would disappear minutes after use, but after a few days the problem started to get worse and the ring expanded until it covered the entire center of the screen, and wouldn't go away even if stuck in the fridge (which would have been a temporary solution anyway).
Now, today the store received my replacement unit, which I saw and tried but couldn't get today because of some forms the store needs to receive to complete the replacement. This unit has an earlier serial number, and the rings appeared to be there but only if extreme pressure was applied on the screen.
I am now wondering if the "newton rings defect" can be described as a ring that "appears and stays there during and after use", or more like the "rings appear on pressure and fade away immediately"?
Can any of you lucky owners of a "good" SGS tell me if the rings DO NOT appear even when hard pressure is applied?
I am asking this because my current defective unit shows the rings even on light pressure, while the replacement requires much harder pressure to show the defect.
Thank you!
Have had unit since July with no newton rings. Can push down fairly hard and not see any defect.
Pretty sure that ANY Tab will show the rings if you push hard enough. At that point you are physically harming your tablet just to see if you can physically harm the tablet though.
I had the same problem. The tab was about 6 weeks old when it started to show the rings. Then they went away completely, but came back much worse after about a week. I took my tab to a Samsung service center and they replaced the screen with a new one which has much sturdier glass.
The original screen had a serious amount of flex to it. The glass would bow in the middle with even a light press, and this is what was responsible for the newton's rings problem. Samsung seems to have just made a bad call with the glass they used for their first few batches of tablets, and I imagine all of these tabs will show the newton's rings defect at some point.
The new glass that was installed for me doesn't flex at all, but if I push down really hard on the screen the rings still appear, but disappear as soon as I release the pressure.
I would say that if the rings appear at all during regular use, whether they persist or not, that constitutes a defect, because it'll only get worse in the long run.
i almost bended the tab both from the back and front with my fingers in different areas on the screen.. and the result is no rings, not even a slight distortion..
i have this problem, the back black surface is very soft and flexable just like the back part of the galaxy s.. it makes me wonder if it is going to be worse in time.. other than that there is no physical problems..
got my replacement today. The glass feels nice, and while the old one developed the rings right on the first day, this one has no rings at all, even after I stressed it with looped quadrant tests while it was inside its pouch and in a hot room. I heard that someone started seeing the rings weeks after buying it, I am now wondering if they will show up or those people just started NOTICING it a bit later. As I said, the other one started having problems right out of the box, as soon as it got a bit warm.
i forgot to ask... when did you buy yours? On the back you can see a number starting with R2GB and then a 6, 7 or 8, with 8 being the latest devices built (august). Mine is a B6, the other one was a B7

After having my Tab for months, the issue only started here last week as the UK had some hot weather. Definitely didn't have it before that. Now it's cooled again, they've gone away.

After some days of intense use the problem has not appeared. I have to press down on the screen fairly hard to make them appear but they vanish a soon a I lift my finger. Obviously every tablet does this, I tried pressing hard on the screen on an iPad2 and a ring appeared there too. Hope it stays this way
I have had a B6 model for approx 3 and a half weeks. Wife bought it in early August though. I see the rings only when I press hard on the middle of the screen. They disappear immediately.

Solution!
I caught the famous newton rings two days ago after 2 months of ownership - and paniced at once. I read about all the disappointed users and returns and repairs. And decided to do the same. Got a ticket from the berlin workshop, that officially repairs for samsung. But i like experimenting. So i followed some leads before sending in. Put it in the fridge, warm it up on the heating. Both had no effect. At first. Disappointed, I let it lie beside my keyboard and continued working. When i looked at the 10.1 after 40 minutes again, the stain, that measured 2,5 * 5,5 cm in the morning and rather grew bigger when trying to treat, was shrunk to 1*3 cm or so. I did not trust my eyes. After another 10 mins, it was only the size of a fingerprint. And then - the whole screen totally went back to completely normal on its own. No rubbing or pressing could change that development.
My conclusion, and i can not believe, that samsung has not published that quickly and clearely, is that it is a moisture-problem. The weather these days is moist and also, i worked with the tab in moist surrounding lately. The "healing" set in, when i had the tab heated up to ca. 30 - 40 degrees celsius and then let it rest for some time with no cover in a dry room at 20 degrees celsius.
Try it before complaining, if you can live with thecircumstances. I do not know, if the replacement-screens of samsung is different, new at all or only dried by samsung... i will not send in mine anymore.
I can confirm, that the healing by administer some heat is permanent and also by doing the fridge and the heating again after the healing, i could not provoke any stain again.
Good luck!

ok guys, so i had this problem pop up a few months after i bougt it, so last week i spoke to the customer service rep and they mailed me a prepaid ups label, i mailed it to texas, 4 days later its back on my door step.
My impressions:1. They definitely changed the screen, the new screen has a slight texture underneath the glass, that isnt noticeable until you look really really hard.
2. The screen brightness, quality is unchanged.
3. The screen now has a dark grey samsung label on the bezel, my tab didnt have the label before.
4. The tab feels a lot more solid than it did before, not that it wasnt solid before, but there was always a very very slight creak when you handled it, especially at the back. It feels like everything is really really tightened now, feels a lot more dense.its a good thing.
5. I cant seem to produce the newton rings now, before they would appear temporarily when i applied slight pressure to the screen, or when i rubbed the screen to remove fingerprints, but now that doesnt happen. The glass feels a little thicker.
6. Another slight difference, is the fingerprints dont seem to show as much as they did before. Its not a major difference, the screen is still a fingerprint magnet.
Temp fix on post 7
Hey, I've owned my phone for
about 6 months. It has been fine till about a week ago when I flashed a miui rom (Mintberry). At first, it was just occasional flickering, everyday or two for a few seconds, but now it's turned into a fair bit more.
If I don't use my phone heavily for about 3 hours, and go back to the phone, the screen has turned completely grey. When this happens, no matter what state my phone is in the screen flickers. It generally begins flickering very fast then after 5 seconds the screen is completely grey (even once rebooted).
I have dropped my phone a few times like everyone does, nothing severe or even close though. I didn't drop it then have it instantly happen.
I have since tried a few things...
Changed pixel density in rom toolbox (works once rebooted, but only till I stop using)
Changed from miui to ICS (no difference, but took an hour for it to start)
Am I looking at buying a new screen?
Edit: tried another battery, no success (didn't expect much)

I had similar issue with my phone. I do not think it has anything to do with software.. but yours is far worse thn mine.. I only had minor flickering which could only be seen sometimes and you really need to notice it with black or white background.. I tired diffrent roms it was on all of them.. I switched back to original rom.. and then got my screen replaced underwarranty... working fine since then..
OK thanks, ill give them a call today.

Had mine flickering in the same fashion. Out of warranty. Took it to a repair place and apparently it was just the screen connection was loose - thats what they told me anyway - $80 later everything worked again - probably ripped me off but im not a hardware tech so didnt want to screw with it myself
I'll have a look at a disassemble guide today, see if I can fix the cable. Thanks man, generally screen flickering is from a loose cable.

Well today I found a fix...
I accidently left my phone in the car when it was pretty hot. Seemed fine when i used it for a few minutes so i assumed it was water damage and decided to take the battery out and leave it for a while.
Came back to the phone after i had done the shopping to see if it was still working. Nope... It was noticably colder though as the car was now in the shade.
I ended up getting a heat bag and wrapping it around the phone. The screen almost immediately started working and the screen was perfect.

I've been watching some videos online about the Nexus 7 while I wait for mine to get here. Pre-ordered at GameStop on July 17th.
I stumbled across this video.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32DD4DF7Qpo
It shows a lot of people trying to open the box. It's apparently dmn near impossible to open. LoL!! Has this happened to anyone else? I'd love to see more YouTube videos of people just trying to get the box open. =.P
I spent about 5-10 minutes trying to slide the sleeve off without damaging it.
Decided to give up and go and fetch a knife and before I even got to the door the missus had picked it up and slid it off instantly :\
Suppose I must have loosened it or something.
I also had a heck of a time with the sleeve but managed to push it out eventually.
Add me to the list who had problems with the sleeve. It only took me about a minute to finally slide it off, but what a battle.
Dont try and slide it down with 2 hands, use something to push the inside out, while you hold the sleeve, I used the corner of the back of a dining chair. Slid right off.
Sleeve too longer than it should have. I've unboxed 2 units now, both had tape holding the wrap on the device to the top of the box for some reason.
Didn't take nearly as long as some of those unboxing videos.... that was funny when I first saw it.
Oh yeah, it was a royal pain in the behind!! Just like in the videos. I was trying to do it as non-destructively as possible as I wasn't sure if I wanted to keep it. I wanted to test-drive it for a few days and possibly return it if I didn't like it. (I'm keeping it for sure now, don't worry.)
Me too! About 3 minutes to get the slip moving- then it came out very slowly. I cut the tapes, and had a hard time getting the box lid off!
I saw some videos of unboxing and I noticed people had issues with opening it as well. I just figured they were try to open it strangely or something
i ripped mine a little. :x
I had no problems with the sleeve but after breaking both seals I try to open the box. Hell of a battle. Just as I though I had it my nexus flew out lucky I caught it just an inch from the floor

I just bought the Nexus and had to look up how to get it out without damaging the box. Finally asked my wife to push it out of the sleeve while I held the sleeve. Thanks for these posts.
My mom.
Actually, my mom opened the box before I did. I got on the 4th (from GameStop), left it in the truck with mom, went to Subway, came back, and not only did she open it, but she also turned it on. Looked like she had no problem.
I had no issues what so ever. I opened my box in about 15 seconds no joke. Those videos made me anxious to open it because I've done a lot of unboxings.

All I did was slide it out of the sleeve and use both hands to lightly hold the top part of the box and lift it right off... if you put pressure on it, it will just stick...

Oh my gosh!! I just got my Nexus 7 from Gamestop on Aug. 7th. I actually had trouble opening the 1st box. I couldn't get it to slide off. LoL!! I thought there wasn't tape until I got that box off. And I had just as much trouble trying to slide off that slide-part as well.
Also for the tape, I luckily had my keys, but that tape did not want to get cut. LoL!! My friends kept saying I was going to break it the way I was trying to cut the tape.
