They didn't call it "broken" but they said it wasn't doing it's job.

The more press the better...
They're right, it isn't broken. If it was broken, then the GPS wouldn't work at all. Before I did the gps fix, it took a bit while for it to connect inside a building. So when Samsung said they are optimizing the GPS, it made sense. Optimizing the performance of the GPS so it will connect faster and etc.
What amazes me is that the Engadget reviewers didn't seem to know what AGPS even *was*. If you go back and read their Epic 4G review, they initially claimed that they could fix the GPS problem by enabling "Use Wireless Networks!"
These guys are so bush league.
I'm just glad someone in the press realized that there are two separate GPS issues... the AGPS stuff which is easy to fix and the poor Satellite reception/lock issue which hopefully is possible to fix via software/firmware.
Lol, I didn't know people where calling aGPS a fix for the GPS issues.
On mine it works ok, takes 30s-1m to lock then has ~ 20ft accuracy, but enough to navigate around. In the next month we'll get the update to fix it (rolled with froyo I hope).
(I am posting here rather than in the development thread proper because, unfortunately, I have all of five posts, Development requires ten, and I'm more the type to lurk for months and only post useful material rather than spamming up a board BTW, this report has also been sent to a developer using the tweak.)
There's a particular "HSPDA tweak" implemented as a patch to build.prop (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=17158831&postcount=10381) meant to improve radio performance on Cyanogenmod nightlies-based ROMs mentioned in the Cyanogen nightlies thread proper.
At least ILWT CM7 has implemented this patch in its variant/fork of the 186 nightlies; in that particular nightly implementing the changes as a patch seems to partially break GPS in the following manner:
a) GPS Test, GPS Status do get a fix; GPS Status is slow to get a fix but does manage.
b) Google Navigation receives fixes as usual with AGPS on and off.
c) Google Maps proper cannot obtain a fix without AGPS and seems to be relying on towers and previously stored fix information.
d) Copilot Live Professional (v. 8.2.0.368--last multi-country version that takes POI files from outside sources) cannot obtain a fix--it DOES see satellites, but has issues pulling NMEA fix data from the satellites (as if the receiver can't get a full lock) and eventually times out.
I can confirm that solely the sections of the patch pertaining to HSPDA fixes can be applied in ILWT CM7 based on nightly 185, and that these do NOT break GPS; the problematic section in the patch may be a reference to AGPS which is not meant to actually be changed (but some patchers may misbehave and misinterpret this part of the script), or it may be an issue for nightly 186 (though I have a hard time with the latter--seeing as it and build 185 are pretty much identical for the Vision/G2/Desire Z).
At any rate, it's not so much the changes break GPS as that the patch might not be implemented properly. (I AM seeing some improvements with HSPDA and wifi, and with the changes applied manually GPS still works.)
There's a problem with gps tracking, where what happens is the following, the user tries to track his location on GPS, but it doesn't give me correct data, some links for the issue(No fix in those links)
New user can't add links so if you googled OP 5 gps issue, you'll find the issue am talking about

Those discussions are from last year where no Oreo roms are available. And I really don't know why there should be one on Oreo right now. Never heard of it and I'm using GPS(device only mode) frequently for tracking bike tours.
Discussion from last year about the same topic(better to continue there): https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/help/oneplus-5-gps-issues-t3627597/page8
New Sony Xperia X Compact, and out of the box has had a GPS problem. It came loaded with Nougat, and I updated ota each version one-by-one to the latest Oreo 118, then unlocked bl, and flashed Sailfish, and the problem is the same on all.
What it is, is that the GPS signal will get a fix on-and-off after every few minutes, but won't hold steady. Using SatStat app on Android, I saw that the effect was the same with GPS and with network location.
Using a GPS info app, I see that when there is a fix, I get a read on latitude and longitude and altitude, but never anything for speed or direction. Seems like the fix is so brief that there is not a chance to measure it.
It seems obviously a hardware issue, being consistent over many software states, but the hardware is obviously working, so not sure... I would wonder if it was an issue with the carrier, but I used the same sim with the same account on my previous phone and it was fine.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Try GPS Connected app, it's available off Google Play Store.
BTW:
GPS has nothing to do with INTERNET/CELLULAR SERVICES. Your GPS receiver relies on radio waves. But instead of using towers on the ground as the cell phone does, it communicates with satellites that orbit the Earth. There are currently 27 GPS satellites in orbit - 24 are in active use and 3 act as a backup in case another satellite fails.
I'm using Samsung Galaxy S4 mini (serranoltexx) running LineageOS 14.1 since 2018. Some time ago I'm experiencing such a strange problem with GPS fix. GPS chip can find satellites quickly with a strong signal (4 and more satellites) but can't get stable GPS fix. It may get GPS fix for a few seconds and then I need to wait again for the next GPS fix. It means that GPS fix is unstable. I can see the same behavior in any app for example gpstest.
Could you please give me advice how to troubleshoot this issue with the poor GPS fix?
In the logcat I can see the following entries after the GPS fix is losing:
Code:
04-17 21:32:48.092 598 1063 E LocSvc_ApiV02: W/virtual int LocApiV02::setGpsLock(unsigned int):3033]: Set engine lock failed. status: eLOC_CLIENT_SUCCESS, ind status:eQMI_LOC_ENGINE_BUSY_V02
04-17 21:34:08.358 598 1063 E LocSvc_ApiV02: W/virtual int LocApiV02::setGpsLock(unsigned int):3033]: Set engine lock failed. status: eLOC_CLIENT_FAILURE_INVALID_PARAMETER, ind status:eQMI_LOC_SUCCESS_V02
I'm tying to understand if this problem is related to the software defect i.e. LineageOS 14.1 or to the hardware - maybe GPS chip is almost dead. Also tried to Google these but no luck. I would not like to change the phone with no reason because it's very compact and handy. Thank you in advance.
Another question do we have here happy users who are still using S4 mini devices and not complaining on GPS performance with the lineage-14.1-20180624-nightly-serranoltexx-signed image?
I have the same problem Samsung Galaxy S4 mini (serranoltexx) with LineageOS 14.1. After repairing GPS it works briefly and then stops using GPS satellites even though it shows that it has found several 15 or more, but it does not get stable data from any.
I solved this problem on the software level. First I discovered that GPS fix is getting pretty fast when the phone in airplane mode. Then I replaced my SIM card. But this was useless in this case because the problem has been fixed finally after upgrading the Real Time GPS tracker application. I think that due to the software bug in this 3rd party application my GPS chip went crazy. Now seems all works good as before. I have tested it already for a few weeks.
That's good to know. So I'm going to look for which of my applications using GPS can do this a problem.
Thanks you
The problem is back from time to time. Sometimes rebooting of the device is needed to get the stable GPS fix.
GPS chip in this device supports GLONASS. But when I'm using GPS Test application I never saw that GLONASS satellites are really connected.
Can anyone confirm that GLONASS is working on these devices?
[ROM][I9190/I9192/I9195/L520/R890][Unofficial][11.0.0] LineageOS 18.1 for S4 Mini
Upgrade has solved all problems with GPS that I had. Even GLONASS is now working what was never worked in 14.1.
