clockworkmod and the Hero - Hero CDMA General

Hey guys I picked one of these phones up to play with a few days ago and im about to root it now. I was just curious if use this method
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=584029
that would end up putting me on modaco I believe. But i was just curious if that would also give me CWM recovery or if i would need to/would be able to just go to the market and install clockwork mod and get CWM that way. I guess im asking whats the best method of getting CWM installed after i root haha.

Easiest root method is to use z4root and when it says rebooting you just manually reboot it. After that install Busybox installer and Terminal Emulator. Also download CWM from my signature and extract the recovery.img and place it in the root of your SD card. Use busybox installer to install busybox and once that is installed open up terminal emulator.
Enter these commands:
$ su
# flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img

I just wanted to chime in here with a recent experience i had installing recovery. I tried this way and it would have been great if it worked but either busybox didn't install right or it was a free vs paid or i just had a bad experience but flash_image command never worked for me.. I ended up installing an old rom manager apk file to get cw recovery as i couldn't dl it from play.. YMMV

Hey guys i appreciate the info! Thanks alot

Clockwork Recovery 2.5.0.1

Will this work for Aria also?

To flash with unrEVOked v3.0:
1) Do NOT plug in your phone
2) Run the unrEVOked v2.1 app on the PC
3) Choose FILE --> CUSTOM RECOVERY
4) Navigate to the .img file downloaded
http://koush.tandtgaming.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.1-inc.img
5) Plug in your phone
edit....just read this also
If you have Rom Manager installed, you can install this really easily.
1) Run Rom Manager
2) Select All ClockworkMod Recoveries
3) Select 2.5.01
4) Select Reboot into Recovery
5) It will install automatically
I have received this version through rom manager's auto update. Works fine.
after flashing from Rom Manager and it reports ClockWorkMod 2.5.0.1 and then sending command adb reboot recovery, it shows at bootup ClockWorkMod Recovery 2.0.1.3
why does it not list a boot 2.5.0.1 ?
I then access on phone Rom Manager (again) and it asks for SU permission and installs (again) 2.5.0.1
shows up as 2.5.0.1 for me, at the recovery screen.
did the re-install work?

I know this is *slightly* off topic.. but what is the Rom Manager and where do we find it? I missed it somewhere.
Access Market, search Rom Manager and pick the one at top
Once installed, you can do an update and it should all work automatically
Rom Manager allows you to customize, update, backup the phone
I had an issue where installing this version and trying to reboot into recovery would juse leave me with that "!" graphic and I fixed it by reverting back to 2.5.0.0. I updated using the ROM Manager too, so not sure if I did something wrong or what, but if anyone else is having that issue, there's a quick simple fix for now

i see the same issue. if i reboot into recovery from ROM Manager, it boots up at 2.5.0.1
if i boot into recovery from QuickBoot, it shows up as 2.0.1.3.
Any ideas why?
I'm using the non-paid version of ROM Manager and when I try to update to 2.5.0.1 it says the following error message after confirming that I have an HTC Evo:
"An error occurred while flashing your recovery"
Any ideas. Please and thank you.

the only thing i could think of is perhaps the version you installed via rom manager is somehow in a different location than the other version? perhaps its looking in a different spot for the recovery info, so it loads a different version.

Just install ROM manager from the App. market and you will be set - it has an option to flash either one.
is this clockwork compatible with the evo since it does say its for the incredible...

I'm getting the same error using my Sprint Hero. v2.0.1.5
I'm rooted
Not sure what sideloading of apps is :/
I allowed SU permissions
None of the previous versions under All Clockwork Recoveries work either.
PS - I'm new to rooting; just did it today & reading up today. However, this is one I can't seem to find an answer to yet.
sideloading refers to unrestricted ability to load any .apk you wish from any source, including non-market
on a rooted Aria, it is accomplished simply by running a small batch file in the SDK tools folder, ie. assuming SDK is on c:\android\tools
cd\android\tools
adb remount
adb pull /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db settings.db
echo update secure set value = 1 where name = 'install_non_market_apps';|sqlite3 settings.db
adb push settings.db /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
pause 1
adb reboot
Same
Hey guys, new to the Android scene. I finally got my Evo, and rooted it using the latest SimpleRoot OTA Edition. I think I'm rooted; I went along with the videos and did exactly what they did, and everything worked fine.
I'm also getting the "an error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands!" when I try to do the "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery" option. Not sure what to do now.
Also, this may be just by coincidence, but ever since I rooted the phone, it hasn't connected to 4G. Do I need to update something else, or am I just getting a bad connection by coincidence?
Thanks in advance.
I have 2.5.0.1 on my Aria no matter witch way I go into recovery it has been like that since I rooted my fone

Thanks, but if its not a problem to you. Can you put a step by step so I can do it like it is. Thank you. I'm really new at this. So if can help me by telling me exactly how to do it I would really appreciate that.
you could do it through terminal emulator, first you need the cm6 rom flashed then you need to download the clockwork mod 3.xxx of wich ever you want after you flashed the cm6 rom then you need to put the recovery clockwork you downloaded and rename the file inside the zip recovery.img then put it in the root of the sdcard not in any files or folder. then you go to terminal and type in
su [click enter]
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img[press enter]
then you should see a line that has the # mark and nothing next to it! and you should have the new clockwork i hope this helps you :] please do ask for any question!!

Flashing new recovery isnt working.

Hey, I am trying to successfully get a new ROM, and in all the forums and such I have read tell me that with the Desire Z/G2 I need to flash the newest ClockWorkMod recovery. So i have downloaded a couple different recovery .img files.
Now when i use Emulator, i put in;
su
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recoveryname.img
and it says
flash_image: not found
I dont understand why ROM Manager doesnt give the newest recovery file as an option.
Can anyone help me in this situation?
Thanks

Go back into terminal and try that command again.
ok so I installed root manager, and put the flash_image.zip in the system/bit, and tried it again with the terminal emulator, but i still have no results, it says after the pause when you plress enter after the flash_image prompt, your supposed to reboot the phone and it should start with the new recovery, but when i open ROM manager it staill shows V 2.5.... If i did somthing wrong i cant figure it out., Please help.

Follow these instructions. You can't go wrong. Make sure you back out of the app and go back in. It sets the cursor to the correct posistion. All you have to do is put the .img in the root of your sd. Hope this helps, it did for me.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
wait, so why aren't you just flashing the recovery through ROM manager? Are you trying to install CWR 3.0+?
yes I am trying to flash cwm 3.0, and it is not an option with ROM manager. I will try the Youtube instructions. Thanks
Ok so I tried the instructions with the Youtube video, and when i do the cmd promt in Terminal i get this;
Cant open device: "/dev/block/mmcblk0"
error in reading mbr!
failed with error: -1
I have the recovery.img file (not zip) on the sd card, I used root mamnager to put it in the bin file within system. but the instructions on the video say to use astro and it doesnt give an option to go as deep as root manager.
Thanks
Yes unzip it but make sure its in the root of your sd. That means not folders at all. That's the command that he is making in the video. I don't think you can flash cwm 3.0 in rom manager, only revert back to earlier recoveries, for froyo roms.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Make sure the file is named what your commanding it to be. Make sure its recovery.img no caps.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
OK so I am trying this too. I am putting the recovery image directly to the root of my sd and I can see that it's there. But in TE, I put in the commands and it tells me
flash_image: not found
It's there!!!! I can see it when I have my phone connected. What am I doing wrong?
Edit: I am running stock rooted. Does this have something to do with it?
Rooted running a stock rom? Honestly I can't tell you all I know is I'm running custom rom. If I had to guess I would say it doesn't. All I can say is I had issues until I watched the video, sorry I can't help more. Only thing I would say to do is wipe everything you did and try redoing it.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
I can say you should only have one .img in your sd to not confuse it. I'm pretty sure you can use command prompt on your pc if you have access to one.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Ok, I think I am getting somewhere, I was searching my sdcard on my computer, and I realised that the root of my sdcard is not called "sdcard" so in the command i was doing it wrong, It is called "HTC DESIRE" so i did it in Emulator and it worked i rebooted my phone in recovery and I am now rocking the new ClockworkMod Recovery 3.0.0.5...
Thanks all for the help, Hope what i discovered helps someone else.
Wait, Wait, Wait... I just screwed it up again... I went into ROM Manager after I successfully flashed 3.0.0.5. and it was not showing that in ROM Manager, so I tapped on flash latest recovery, and damnit... it replaced all my hard work with the 2.5 recovery... I have tried to repeat the flash process a few times with 3.0, and i have not been successful... Help... I dont know what to do now!!!
Instead of flashing the recovery in rom manager, after you've inputted the
su
# flash_image recovery sdcard/recovery.img
you can just type in after it
# reboot recovery
and it will reboot you into CWM 3.0. Be sure to perform a nandroid backup under 2.2 first and when you want to go back to a froyo rom, you'll have to flash the 2.5 recovery image again.
Yes, you will not see it in rom manager. Just reboot into the recovery and if you see orange and cwm 3.0 your good. Just repeat the steps.

"flash_image: not found" means that you do not have the 'flash_image' binary installed. Follow the guide here to get 'flash_image' installed on your device (the 'flash_image' binary is attached).
As for why ROM Manager not giving the newest recovery as an option, ROM Manger isn't fully compatible with the latest recovery as it just came out. The latest recovery (I'm assuming you're referring to v3.x) is only for Gingerbread based ROM's, if you're trying to install a Froyo based ROM then you should be using recovery version 2.x.

As you are rooted, you could flash recovery using terminal on the phone.
install terminal and Superuser from market
download CWM recovery 3.0.2 from Kalims' thread and place it in root of your sdcard
download flash_image to root of your sdcard
enter following commands in terminal
Code:
su
cp /sdcard/flash_image /data/local/flash_image
cd /data/local
chmod 04755 flash_image
./flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery_3.2.0.1.img
Thans. I will try it. Is it posibble to install newer version of CWM via terminal?

Sent from my HTC Tattoo using XDA App
Try this
Do u have Universal Androot still installed on ur phone? If its there, then re-root with it and launch ROM Manager immediately after that. Flash recovery TWICE. The new CWM has problems flashing in 1st go.
And secondly, if u are on stock ROM, before updating recovery, always re-root with Androot. Because after every reboot, the tattoo_hack.ko module gets unloaded from the memory if you used Universal Androot on stock ROM.
Things to know while rooting stock ROM:
1. HTC Tattoo is HTC's first NAND locked device preventing users to write to system and recovery under normal conditions.
2. This NAND lock can be defeated by inserting tattoo_hack.ko module. This module was created on taking the help of info from a leaked QualComm datasheet.
3. The module needs to be inserted prior to writing to system or flashing recovery.
4. The manual rooting method and Maveric/NTenisOT 1-click method flashes a custom boot.img after rooting so that the NAND remains unlocked everytime the device is used. On the other hand, Universal Androot unlocks the NAND temporarily while rooting and unrooting. If Androot is used, the device gets permanently rooted, but the NAND locks itself after a reboot, until Androot is used again or tattoo_hack is inserted.
5. Custom 1.6, 2.1, 2.2 roms have tattoo_hack added to their modules list to keep NAND unlocked while device is running. On 2.3, however, the unlock code is compiled into the kernel, so the module is not needed.
6. We deal with this module because no one has developed S-OFF for the Tattoo.
7. Most users forget about this module once their Tattoo is rooted. New users oversee this module and run into problems. The CyanogenMod wiki is misleading in 'How to root Tattoo' because of this.
Finally, please sticky this info if possible because I tell this to everyone who has rooting problems.
Thanks. I did everething just like you sad, but no luck.

Go to universal androot. Hit root again. Let it complete.
Then use Root Explorer and mount /system as rw. Or u ca also use Terminal Emulator. Just type these.
su
mount -o remount rw /system
Close terminal.
Go to ROM Manager. Tap Flash ClockWorkMod recovery. First it will take time. Let it successfully flash. Tap again. Let it flash. Tap again. Let it flash.
I am telling you to tap this many times. Because CWM 5.0.2.0 doesnt flash easily. I got so many failed flashes even on CM7. It only gets flashed after a couple of time.
Otherwise, hit menu button on ROM Manager, slect settings and check mark 'Erase recovery before flashing'. Go back and flash recovery twice.
Finally reboot manually. No need to use ROMManager's reboot option. I read that it works rather badly on Android 1.x. Boot with HOME+POWER.
Lemme know.
Btw, the safest method to flash recovery is NTenis's tool. Used it many times without problems because it flashes the boot to disable the write-protection.

You may have to rename it something smaller for your convenience and sideload it via ADB and the recovery. Aroma manager should pop up and you'll have the option to use a terminal.
I just found a link to the rest of the steps that could have more helpful things than I can offer now.
