[q] acer support and devopment - Acer Iconia A500

Hey Guys. I've been looking into acer as a company and how well they support their products. I was wondering if you all had any experiences to share. I'm looking to get the A510 when that comes out but I want to make sure that there will be enough dev support. Coming from a LG G2x phone..i know what the lack of dev support can do to a phone. if it wasn't for cyanogen and xda my phone would suck!
do you all feel the same way about acer products or do you actually see regular updates and openness from acer in terms of development. Also if you can, how would you compare them to asus in terms of support and development/updates. Any help/comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Not very open and pretty elusive in terms of development. That said, they have been leaking ICS ROMs and the community fills Acer's gaps pretty well. For example, Acer don't release unlocked bootloaders but the community, with the A500, got the SBK formula and now all we A500 owners have root and unlocked bootloaders for life

Acer support
I have had my A500 since September 2011, about two weeks ago the power button stopped functioning (maybe I had flashed too many custom ROMs) so after talking to Acer I sent my unit back for warranty repair. I was not sure whether they would tell me my warranty was void because I was running a custom ICS ROM. They repaired the power button under warranty and shipped it back to me promptly. Acer is not all bad, in fact, I think they are pretty good. I love my A500 running ICS.

yeah i love mine some people may cry here about updates but I think acer has done a good job so far with their first tablet
wifi could be better, but oh well

Dev support for A500

So I picked up a A500 yesterday off craigslist for $300.00 and wow! Coming from the viewsonic gtab this tablet is soooo nice! Absolutely loving it.
Honestly I'm not overly concerned that I do not see a lot of dev support for this tablet but I'm just curious on why not much is going on with it? Is it due to the locked bootloader?
For the price of this tablet and the build quality its a huge win in my book over other tablets.
Now I just wish someone would buy my gtab off craigslist

We just got a custom (partially working) recovery yesterday, so patience is still a virtue. Thus, no development (other than focusing on how to get past the bootloader issue) has really begun to occur yet.
also no kernel released from acer so far as i can tell.

Yeah, and there is that lousy fact too. Wish they would get it out already.
It seems to me being a long time android user on the cell phone side that manufacturers keeping their system open and unlocked is nothing but a plus for them. The geek community is massive on android and the more open it is the more geeks will flock to that device (hint hint Acer)
But none the less this is a fabulous tablet!

The locked bootloader is one (major) issue, although it appears that some of the devs have recently worked around it. I think the promised and impending 3.1 official update is another factor; once 3.1 is available I'd expect to see a bit more activity. Not a lot of purpose working on fixes for a version about to be replaced.

[Q] Samsung vs

Hey guys.. im just a lil curious. I currently have a acer a500 and im kinda annoyed with acer support. When got me looking into returning it for an asus eee transformer, until I saw that this was released! Im im sure you guys are a little biased, but if you could have your choice of any pad would you buy the samsung again? my concern is mostly devs.... not a lot going on for the acer imo.

The choice is yours. If you want expandable storage, HDMI out, and save 100 bucks out of the box go with transformer. If you want a polished device all around, nice screen and have cash to burn on the things mentioned above - go with Samsung.

yeah the apparent lack of dev support and locked bootloader (at the time) is why I returned my A500. Decided there really wasn't much I really needed all those ports for personally. Tried to test drive a TF at Fry's but the touchscreen wouldn't respond even after i rebooted. When I pointed it out to sales guy he said that was the 2nd display that stopped working which I took as a bad sign. So far pretty happy with my decision because the GT is much easier to handle and I've seen quite a few familiar names dev-wise showing up here.

ya ive heard the TF flexes alot.... is the GT more solid feeling? thanks for the reply pretty much exactly what i was thinking and looking to confirm . as long as the 30pin samsung port works with 3g dongles and keyboards im happy!
I had the acer for a couple weeks, then this tab came out and I returned the acer. To me it was more about DEV, I figured we would see custom ROMs faster on theGalaxy.
Thee device itself is much lighter, faster, and I didnt use any of the ports.
I actually had to return two of the acers cause they just kept force closing an the hardware/build was sketchy.
I am totally happy with the tab

Is it more solid....if you mean does any part of it feel like it will come loose or feel cheap then no it just feels lighter than the A500 and Xoom. It seemed like people making an argument for the Xoom always equated its weight with a solid feel which I didn't understand. The A500 felt lighter but also felt more solid than the Xoom IMO.

How is the "bloatware" content and ease of rooting? I had an Iconia 500 (returned 'cause I was a little afraid of ****ty Acer support and lack of dev support) but the Acer had a minimum of bloat and root was dead easy.

There are only two apps from Samsung prepossessing, a music market app (Music Hub) and Samsung's own market app. Rooting isn't one click or accomplished via an apk like Gingerbreak on the Acer (which I think I read doesn't even work on the 3.1 update). If you have a little experience with ADB and using a command prompt you prob won't find it difficult to root. The only issue I had was getting the Samsung drivers installed but that was more of an annoyance than anything else. The instructions are really pretty straightforward. I think someone is working on a script to run the root commands but I haven't seen it yet.

returned my acer and got a samsung 16gig 10.1 today... little sad that my bootloader is locked but eah im sure with time this will get fixed. my acer was faster and no lag like my samsung does, but the samsung has more potential imo.
As an owner of both the Transformer and the Galaxy Tab 10.1 at the moment (will return one soon), I can give you some unbiased advice.
The Galaxy Tab is definitely the better tablet, as is. Meaning if you're not looking to spend any more money after you've paid for the tablet, you'll get the better tablet with the Galaxy Tab (of course, it's $100 more). The build quality is superior. It's thinner/light etc.
However, if you're looking for a tablet with more hardware features, then the Asus Transformer is obviously the clear winner.
The only concern I have with the Galaxy Tab is support from Samsung. Asus have been nothing but awesome. 3.1 firmware 3 weeks after announcement then kernel source shortly after. The Galaxy Tab came out with 3.1 so no idea how it will turn out... I haven't had a chance to own any Samsung phone but I've heard horror stories regarding Samsung's support. But I'm sure we'll have xda's excellent communities to help out with either tablet.

Xoom Dev Scene Dead

Well not completely but compared to the other tablets Dev sections it does seem quite dormant. Just look at the Transformer or the Acer Inconia. There hasn't been much activity here besides a few mods but not any full releases.

Mmm... this topic has been brought up so so so many times...
It's hard to do anything when Google is keeping the Honeycomb source locked up. As far as I know the other Honeycomb tablets have been modified by the manufacturing company to alter certain parts of the Android OS and such, thus allowing for a bit more flexibility when it comes to development.
As far as the Xoom goes, it's the only official pure stock vanilla Google experience tablet, and Google is keeping it locked down without further notice. It's assumed that they will be ready to fully release the source for everything when Ice Cream Sandwich launches in the near future.
If the devs could use magic, they would. Until then... we must wait for ICS. The Xoom is Google's baby, as it was the first of it's kind to start the dawn of the Honeycomb era. When they are good and ready, the development scene for the Xoom will skyrocket in short notice. Trust me.
Also, the only other thing the developers can try besides just tweaking stuff is port the Galaxy Tab 10.1's Touch Wiz Rom to the Xoom. But it's a step back as it's only Android 3.1 while we are already on 3.2.
Someone should get a job at Google and leak the Honeycomb source and then quit. That would be epic.

Also the other devices are incorporating Xoom or Galaxy bits and catching up. This is the problem with the device officially having the newest OS out there. The will be a day when the Xooms' longevity will be evident.
As for now we have the latest and greatest already. It is hard for us flashoholics but there's a reason so much is going on with the Asus and Acer. They needed help hence the Xoom and Galaxy ports. Its lonely at the top. By the way we have Tiamat which in my opinion is the gold standard.
I'm a flashaholic. Good thing I have my thunderbolt or I would go into withdrawls.

Fully sourced custom Roms. That's what everybody is looking for. With that you would have new features, tweaks, and abilities that a stock Rom would never give you in a million years. Tiamat is the gold standard and the other devices wish they had them on their side. The team is just amazing to have created a modified stock Rom experience that works better than default stock. And when they are able to create fully customized fully sourced custom Roms... a loss for words...
Don't feel to bad because the other devices roms are usually referenced to our stock roms.

Awesome! How they don't realize from the past with Android custom devs how much further android could be catapulted past the competition I just don't know.
I also don't get how people are so quick to hop on the latest updates when, even without the source being released, previous versions customers by devs blow away whatever little appetizers Google farts out to us.
Anyhow, I gotta say the Xoom has come an awful long way considering the SC hasn't even been released.
Devs are friggin awesome!
Imagine if the source was out. Xoom sales would jump tenfold.

"That's what everybody is looking for."
And you know that how? I'm one of those "everybody" and I'm not looking for that. I'm looking for someone to take over Ubuntu-development. Even Asus EEE, Acer Iconia and Samsung Galaxy Tab have Ubuntu-ROMS, but we have some crap-ass VNC-Ubuntu. If they can do it (especially considering the Asus EEE and Acer Iconia have the same Tegra 2), then it should be possible for us too. That is what I'm looking for, so don't talk for everybody please.

It's just a general statement, not literally meaning every single person. It's just something one says, and it's not meant to be taken literally as an individual. But ok: "A lot" of people are looking forward to the fully sourced, and full customization from a true custom Rom. And generally speaking... the first thing the average root user thinks of are the custom Roms when they hear the term "source code". Ultimately that's what it would mean when the source code is released. The devs will then have the proper tools to start developing new custom Roms. They will then begin to flood the market in due time with new and unique Roms, as was the same with the OG Droid.

Well I'm sure it's a valid point for you, but being a casual Android user who roots, having an Ubuntu based rom makes no sense to me. I admit I don't even know what an Ubuntu rom is for. Is it something like porting Windows OS into the tablet? If so, I doubt many users care for something like this since rom development to them is more about tweaking, optimizing, themeing and adding functions to an Android based rom. Porting other OSes is a lot more niche and caters to a smaller group of users.
So since the Honeycomb source is indefinitely locked up by Google, themed and overclocked Honeycomb is as good as we can get for now. The next best thing to wait for is Samsung to update the Galaxy Tab 10.1 to Honeycomb 3.2 and we'll probably get Touch Wiz ported over.

Acer Quality

I don't know if anybody here has heard, but Acer just teased a new tablet, amazing sounding one, to say the least, and I was just wondering everybody's opinion of Acer's build quality, and how well they update their devices currently, and just the overall performance that you get out of this tablet.

To answer your question Acer has good quality for the bucks in your bank. I like Acer as this is my fist Acer product matter in fact the only complaint I have is the microphone it stinks.. but if they have fixed that which I'm sure they have ill be sure to pick this up!
Thanks for the link!

Mic isn't bad at all, just not very loud... Some voice chat programs (including skype and gtalk, unfortunately) mess things up, though, giving you weird background noises (not on all devices, though, it works for me). Other than that, the Acer devices are very well worth their money.

If you Google Acer A700 you'll see that the specs on that tab have been out for awhile. I'll be waiting to see if Acer delivers ICS to this tab first. If they drop support on this tab, there's no way in h3ll I'll be purchasing another Acer tab. If they do give us ICS on our tabs, I'll be grabbing the A700, as it seems it's going to be the best "bang for the buck" among the 2012 tabs

I agree 120% with this .. I have a birthday coming in MAY .. Giggles..
if my a500 does not get the support it should.. i might just wait and get a win 8 arm tablet.. and Dual Boot it .but there is always battery issues with windows . we will see what the tech word brings us in 2012.. for now my a 500 meets all the HAVE to have needs.. as if i really NEED a tablet.
Acer always seems to be giving the best bang for your buck, whether it is laptops or not tablets.
One gripe I have against acer is their bloatware. Some may like it but others (like myself) can't stand it.
Also keep in mind that acer is releasing the A200 soon. It's pretty much the same spec wise as the A500 but apparently has no rear facing camera. The pricing looks quite attractive though. I'm still happy with my A500. I actually have no desire to replace it with something newer and better, and I usually drool over the latest and greatest in technology.
I've had an a500 since november and the build quality is great. They have been providing adequate updates so far, and I expect them to provide ICS, but we will see.
Ive been wanting to get a second tablet bc my daughter always has this one and wouldn't hesitate to buy another acer.
Other than build quality ill be looking at development on market app as well as on xda
Gameloft and other game developers choose a500 as a flag ship for development another reason I choose this tablet over Asus, Samsung, and Mototrola. I contacted Gameloft before I picked up a 10.1 tablet around September and asked them what tablet to pick up they told me Acer Iconia because Acer has been the only company that was helping them out the most with developmental needs.. so of course when I went to best buy they were out of a500s and I had 300 bucks from trading in my Droid incredible and I didn't want to wait so I picked up the thrive because of the nice stuff included with it.. but ended up having nothing as far as xda & others so picked up tf101 loved it but it kept slipping out of my hands.. lol so bestbuy finally called me to tell me the Acer was in so I picked it up answer fell in love with it. So that my awesome story and we lived happily ever after
So I will most likely pick up Acer if top devs do aswell.

Thanks for the replies guys! I still have plenty of time to think this over. Acer is definitely a huge choice now though, and I like this community, way friendlier than the original Asus Transformer. Back before the Prime came out, I made a thread like this, asking about Asus and what to expect in the tablets, and it was immediately hostile responses. Terrible, but glad I didn't have enough to buy that Prime, so much bad reports about it. My choices are now this A700, thanks to your responses and some research, and the Asus TF700T.

The Acer bootloader does some checksumming and stuff that makes rooting hard on the newer FWs, but there's a rooting method around that works (downgrading isn't much of a problem). As has been said, just use the search.
Alright, I was just wondering though, different company's products usually have completely different rooting methods than others; I've only ever rooted all my HTC phones, but thanks.

Just thought some would find this info helpful..
UPDATE: Looks like this is indeed the A700. The folks at The Verge managed to find the new Iconia Tab lounging around in Vegas and discovered that it's packing a 1.3GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, as well as the aforementioned 1080p display. It's also got Bluetooth support, a microSD card slot, and an HDMI port. As far as release details go, the A700 is said to be landing sometime in the second quarter, but no other specific launch information is known just yet.

Woweeee..
But i to agree with you about acer.I think after the device is no longer valid it could maybe happen..But even then i do not see it. They are always answering Absolutely no.
I find it interesting that SO many people trash Acer, yet, apparently, purchased their products. Since I've known Acer to be very consistent in their products, support, warranties, etc... for years... I wonder why these people would have purchased an Acer product in the first place. Perhaps they all received them as gifts. Surely, anyone who thought SO little of a company would never give them their hard-earned cash for their products.

Heaven forbid we have the entitlement to do what we want with our devices! Acer would never change how the bootloader worked after it went on the market.
It would be impossible and never a thing that happened.

Let me offer another prespective...
Iconia vs. Ipad = $300 (There or about)
Iconia vs. Transformer = $50??? (plus or minus)
Iconia vs. Galaxy or Xoom??? Dont even bother
I was able to root in a few hours thanks to the tutorials in XDA's dev section and dont particulary care for anything stock.
Based on the price differences of tablets with comparable hardware I think we should be quite happy with what we have. I bought my tab on boxing day at a price point that I did not expect to get ICS for.
Why the gripes folks?
Since we have nvflash, we can run even custom bootloader; so there is absolutely no security on the device. Right now the process is a bit complicated, so you have to wait for stock bootloader with working fastboot oem unlock

yes i have been watching the work in your Dev thread. and also on the on acer tablet users website. There seems to be a built in unlock method with icon type screen. So if wHhat i read over there is true Acer's Push of ICS To the a200 has a built in unlock mech.
So it looks like acer has been watching and listening.
I think moving forward a lot of manufacturers will be making the bootloaders unlockable. Mostly because it's a way to compete now. A lot of people say the "average user" doesn't care about or doesn't understand root, updates, ROMs, etc.
In reality there are probably just as many "power" users as "average". Guess where a lot of them go if someone makes their hardware more open. Locked down hardware becomes undesirable. That's sales they don't get. That's recommendations they might not get. That's a strike against them in reviews.
Money might be what's moving this but I'm certainly not complaining. If it turns out the developers and engineers behind these companies understand where we come from, that's even better.
I Agree it seems to be a tread to unlock them especially on NON Contract devices. I can kinda understand if say you get a 400.00 device for 125.00 attached to a 2 year contract how the Carrier has a right to restrict that device to there Services only. But after that two years when the device is on its way out. They should then Totally unlock the device..
with the above said NONE OF that should apply to the A500 . A501 if you bought it on a contract subsidized with a lower price to stay with the company They have right to lock .. THIS i believe is the force behind Manufactures locking devices. Either pressure from carriers . or locking them as a incentive to get carries to use there device.as well as they think it says them tech support dollars. The tech support dollars saved .Well i believe they loose as many Tech savy customers a dollars saved.
I so hope they just allow unlocks for all devices
Link is actually for the Transformer Prime TF201
Just wanted to point out that the official tool linked in the original post (remember that post? It was about the Asus TF101? I know it didn't have to do with Acer so you may have forgotten...) is actually only available for the TF201 (Transformer Prime) running ICS. There does not appear to be an official unlock tool for the TF101.
Yeah it need to be unlocked it like have a PC without a bios

Since we have nvflash, we can run even custom bootloader; so there is absolutely no security on the device. Right now the process is a bit complicated, so you have to wait for stock bootloader with working fastboot oem unlock

Who are "we"? I sure as hell don't have it. Lots of people don't have nvflash. For us the TF101 is as locked down as they come.
Only releasing the SBKv2 (and v3 and v4 and v5 etc) keys or unlocking the bootloaders is acceptable.
Yet Asus has yet to release anything at all.
Colour me disappointed.

"We" are those who own an a500. Welcome to the iconia a500 general forum.
BTW the transformer, being a tegra device, does indeed have nvflash. Seems its useless as pointed out below. Forgive my ignorance.

Indeed it does, but unless you have a secure boot key version 1 TF101, nvflash does not work . What the above poster is talking about is that most of the current TF101s on the market have secure boot key version 2 and up which means nvflash is about as useful as a screen door on a submarine.
