[Q] [MOD] 3G (Ideia?) - Eee Pad Transformer General

Hi ppl, sorry about my english i dont post that often but was just wondering...
Since i see ppl adding 500GB HDD's to the dock itself (and even 750GB), I was wondering if anyone already thought of putting a 3G USB Pen inside, perhaps remove the casing of t pen itself for better reception (might vary on the location in the dock, dont really know).
So we could have 3G internally in the dock itself! Perhaps add a small USB HUB inside and connect also a small 2.5" HDD. (dont know nothing on about the powering issue for both devices).
Just bringing up a thought, and hope i'm posting it in the right section
Cheers.

I think that his has been done before but i think there was an issue about signal through the metal casing of the dock worth a try though

Kaiser's external antenna ports?

Hi,
Have a Kaiser on the way and want to have an external GPS antenna and an external phone antenna ready to go when it gets here.
But I can't find anywhere what types of antenna sockets the Kaiser has for these two antennas?
Does anyone know???
Thanks.
Great forum, by the way!
As far as i can see it only has a socket for a GPS antenna so i assume this would probably act as both although not sure
you can get the official antenna from expansys
http://www.expansys.com/htc/p_htc_item.aspx?i=151025
I can confirm spooki37 says, from what I can tell, there is only one port. It is located the rubber GPS stamp that is on the back of the device. eBay has them shipping to the US for about $15 - $20 non-oem from China.
When I remove the battery cover, it sure looks like there are two jacks. I too thought the other must be for external Cellular antenna.
So does anyone know what the 2nd port is used for?
Whatever you do dont use the second port because it will damage your phone. I plugged an external antenna into my original phone and when I removed it the phone had no signal at all. The only way to get any signal was to use an external antenna after that.
That second port is an antenna port but htc doesnt support any antenna for it and is supposed to be used for debugging purposes only.
I use an external antenna all the time with mine... (TyTN II / Kaiser) works ok.. not great, but gets me one more bar, and seems to hold the signal better in a low signal area.
I use this adapter:
http://www.wpsantennas.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=441
with one of their antennas.
I don't have any problems with signal after I disconnect it, but i'm pretty careful with connect/disconnect, and I cradle it while connected. I bet a little torque would probably damage the connection which would probably damage the internal antenna connection as well.
So you remove the battery cover and plug that antenna into the smaller of the two ports? Ive damaged 2 phones trying external antennas and so have others. This one is a htc titan http://pdaphonehome.com/forums/ppc-6800-xv6800/96140-phone-signal-horrible.html and theres more reports like this one.

I usually just pull my battery cover off, carefully seat the antenna into the port on the left, and then cradle the the thing.
I've done this with this phone, a moto blackjack, and at least two other moto phones in the past, and never had an issue. Again, though... I've pretty much ALWAYS immobilized the phone while it's got the antenna jack plugged in. I actually try to do the same when USB is in too... the boards inside these tiny devices are too thin and the amount of torque you can apply accidentally is quite high... best to be safe... but I get intermittent signal where I use it most frequently, so I accept the risk.
Thanks!

That's exactly the answer I needed - thanks heaps!
So obviously it takes the some patch lead as the Tytn. In that case I'll just get a Tytn patch lead off ebay and hope for the best.
The owner's manual I found for the Tytn says you can use the antenna plug, so they obviously thought it was safe then, but maybe hid it on this model because of a few reported breakages. I'm going to use mine only occasionally and in a cradle, so I hope I'll be OK if I'm very careful. Maybe I'll never end up using it given the risk...
Another option would be one of those universal antenna leads. They clip on the back of the phone and work by an induction coil. Their performance is very variable - mine works OK (+1 bar) on a friend's phone, but seems to make no difference on my phone.
I want to add this as well: plugging in an external antenna can damage your phone. I have plugged a wilson antenna into my 8925 and now my reception is extremely poor... I am not sure of the cause, or how to fix it.. just hope to help people avoid this.
We have the 8925 here at our office and have found that the port on the right side is for GPS only. The left port is for cellular reception.
We have not damaged the phone that we have here and have had the 8925 for about 6 months.
There are a few issues with using external antennas:
First of all, the connector must be properly sized for the phone.
With some device/connector combinations it is normal for the connector to appear to not be fully seated. If you try to force the connector on further you can do permanent damage to the phone.
In the phone there is a tiny mechanical switch that gets tripped when you plug the external antenna in. This physically disconnects the internal antenna and connects the phone's radio to the antenna port. Sometimes this switch gets stuck in the port position, so you get poor performance when you disconnect the external antenna. This is especially common with CDMA Motorola V3 models.

any body uses a wifi external antenna????
How hard is it to fix this "switch"? I have a kaiser that will only work with an external antenna after using one. Port isnt damaged as far as I can tell and ive never had problems with external antennas with other phones.

I've never actually had this happen to any of my phones, so I don't know how hard it is to fix. If the external antenna was forced onto the connector you may have to send the phone in for service to have the port replaced. The only other thing I can think of is to put a small amount of contact cleaner on the port itself, the gently work it in with the external antenna connector. This may loosen the switch and let it return to the internal antenna position if this is your problem. In all likelihood I'd say that a warranty exchange is probably your best bet.

has anyone notised a 3rd port? its between the camera and the speaker and slightly higer than the other 2 I bet that ones for wifi at 1st glance I thought it was a screw.
I don't understand why the port were designed in the first place when things seem to be such a useless purpose ...etc
comes with INTERNAL GPS ... so why the need for EXTERNAL ??? and if you do need to use it ... it is delicate and chances are, you're screwed and damage it !!
so why bother designed it ?? <scratching head> !!!
External antennae that are properly sized for the operational wavelength will always have higher effective gain than any built-on antenna that is capable of fitting on a typical handheld device.
The External GPS antenna has 27 dB Gain (typical)... I cannot find specifications for the internal antenna on our Kaiser's, but I am willing to bet they are probably at best a unity antenna, maybe 3db on the good side.
That means you will recieve SIGNIFICANTLY signal strength and more satellites when you are doing anything involving GPS, and weather, antenna position, and all standard environmental factors will have significantly less effect on your GPS activities.
The same goes for an external antenna for the cellular portion. The internal radio boosts power output when it has degraded reception which means when you're in a poor reception area, you burn more battery doing the same things you typically do.
A "gain" vehicular antenna directly connected to your phone will increase battery life when using wireless connections to the cellular network, as well as provide you good reception where you would otherwise have poor to none.
Of course, if you live in an urban area, this is probably of no use to you... but in a built up area with many large buildings around, you may not have as good GPS resolution and reception as you could with an external antenna..
*
The primary reason they put these on there is moreso for diagnostic purposes probably... hook it up to a freq counter and/or spectrum analyzer and you can tell that the radio is actually putting out what frequency and it's strength as well. Without those, there's no external way to ensure transmission is occuring without possible interference.

I've examined this very closely under a bright light, and I have concluded that it is a screw with a Torx head.

Help with accessing files on Polaris

Hello everyone, I have a couple of questions to ask all of you great phone gurus
**If this is the wrong forum for this sort of thread, I apologize in advance**
Basically I have ruined the USB connection on my Touch Cruise. I am wanting to know if there is any way I can access my files on the phone by having it connected to my wireless network at home (ie a program or something I can run on my PC.) Reason I ask is I am trying to edit the HTC weather Plugin to show my location (Lebanon, OH, USA) and it is quite hard/impossible to do using the phone alone.
Second question is, is it possible to replace a damaged USB connector? I know it is probably ruined but I figure it might be worth a try. I had attempted to hook up my front USB header on my motherboard, but plugged them in backwards. I managed to salvage the phone by removing the actual USB piece from the phone and pulling the wires out. Luckily I am still able to use the phone (nothing else besides the USB connector is messed up) by purchasing an external battery charger + battery.
I know these are probably both a shot in the dark but any help anyone could provide would be GREATLY appreciated.
You can sync via bluetooth if you have it on your computer, or wifi search in google for that (ex: http://wifi.aximsite.com/sync.html)
I tought replace it will be very hard .
just out of curiosity could you please give us some screenshots as i'm having a real hard time understanding what you did and how it looks now? ^^
using bluetooth will help and maybe a card reader + microSD might speed things up. find a good file manager for WinMO
i doubt that there is any way to acces phones files through wireles so bluetooth is the only wireless (and supported) way
I don't have a camera currently but just look at your USB connection on your phone then imagine that there is absolutely nothing in it. It is just an empty 'rectangle'. No wires or the little horizontal piece that normally sits in there. Just an empty 'rectangle.'
Thanks for the replies. I am trying the wireless sync now.
Thanks a bunch

[Xoom 2] Hardware hack - adding microSD via USB hard-wiring?

I'm just contemplating whether it would be possible to hard-wire a MicroSD card reader into the Xoom 2.
I've seen threads about trying to add the oem reader onto the motherboard, but what I'm thinking is (firstly testing) that a 2-way usb splitter will allow a usb microSD reader and a sync cable to work at the same time.
If they work fine, then surely splitting open the housings of the splitter and card reader, and soldering all connections instead of chunky usb plugs, then breaking the connection from the MoBo to the current usb out and instead connecting it to one of the splitter's outputs?
Perhaps behind the void microSD port cover would be just enough space to fit the circuitry?
Anyone's thoughts?! I know it's far easier to brainstorm something like this than it is to actually do such a fiddly job, but would it be possible? I saw on the Advent Vega forums (A crappy tablet I also have) the same thing has been done to hardwire a USB modem. Apparently the case of that device has just enough space to squeeze it all in.
Perhaps this has already been done?
This isn't going to end well lol
Good luck though and don't forget to YouTube your efforts for bragging rights and our praises!

Android MHL Extension Dock (Android as PC)

Hello everyone!
I just started working on a small project and would like to hear what you people think about it.
The idea of the project is simple. Create a dock for your smartphone, which basically extends its usability to a full fledged laptop or PC.
All the new phones mostly have MHL (11pin) connectors which means connecting it to an HDMI screen is not a problem. Also, a use of a wireless mouse and keyboard is quite simple and very functional.
So what I am thinking of creating is sort of a laptop with a 13.3 inch screen, a keyboard (maybe even removable to use separately) and a battery to power the LCD.
I have already been in contact with producers of LCDs and control boards, and believe I should start creating the prototype soon.
So what are your thoughts about it?
Do you have any ideas?
Thank you and have a good day!
*to mod: if this is in the wrong section I apologize and kindly ask you to move it to the appropriate section of the forum or message mo to put it somewhere else. Thank you1

Man this is great
I have been thinking about it for some time ... to make my phone a laptop whenever i need to have me a laptop
My solution was to find a virtual machine that runs inside my phone for any type of os ... the problem is the memory !!! Also the app i didnt find it yet
Well bro good luck
If i were you i would take advantage of screen casting instead of lcd monitor so in case the user wanna use the device screen or the tv !!! You can also sell a mini hdmi thing ( the hdmi stick that lets you cast your screen into tv )
Also there is a keyboard and mouse as one piece and their small and great could take them with you everywhere in ... i saw it amazon for 35$ or less something like that with Bluetooth connection. ... im sure you can find a way to do some mod for those keyboards and make them yours ... good luck and keep us posted
A great idea!

Looking for ideas to make Z3 Compact with a broken touch screen usefull again

Hi,
I have a Z3 Compact with a broken screen. It displays everything all right, but the touch is pretty much dead. Shame, I loved that phone.
Thus I am looking for interesting ways to make it useful again. It runs Android 6.0.1 right now.
I have an OTG connector, so I am still able to use the device with an USB mouse - BT controller is an option as well. My most basic options are:
- emulation-handheld for old consoles like PSX and SNES
- PC Camera (with apps like DroidCam, IP Webcam)
But before that my most basic question would be:
Will I be able to use the mouse after reseting the device to factory settings? Seems like the easiest way to clear all the data.
Also, I know there are unofficial Android ROMs available - is it possible to install and use them without the touchscreen, only with USB mouse?
And now to some wishful thinking...
Are there any Linux roms for Z3C akin to Raspbian for Raspberry Pie? Z3C most likely has enough power to act as a simple desktop PC for internet and youtube, it also has peripherals (was it called MHL?) to connect it to a monitor via HDMI that should be dirt cheap by now (the question is, is it still possible to connect K&M at the same time? Is USB-hub enough?), so... maybe?
Any other ideas are welcome!

Make sure you have one of the magnetic charging cables so you can at least keep the mouse plugged in at all times AND keep the battery charged Keyboard & mouse possible IF you use something like the OLDER Logitech models with the proprietary dongle. The newer "unified" stuff won't work. BT keyboard / mouse too sluggish in my experience. If you are feeling courageous, and especially if you don't need it as a daily driver, a replacement screen is something like 25 dollars USD on eBay - get the one with a frame unless you are experienced in replacing screens - the replacement screen only units are somewhat FRAGILE.

Thanks, Nezlek! [I pozdrawiam współ-Warszawiaka! ]
Fortunately I have the magnetic cable, so no worries there. I wasn't planning on replacing the screen, definitely not that courageous. I loved that phone, but I am just not good with tinkering inside of small electronic devices. That is why I was thinking about ways of using it with other input tools like OTG mouse or BT controler. Right now I am thinking about getting a MHL cable for HDMI output and giving it with a BT gamepad to my friends kids with some games loaded. I have no other ideas, sadly.
Do you happen to know if OTG works right away after full-reseting the devicse? This is my main concern now.
Good Question ......

I assume that OTG would work right after a re-set. Why not? The support is built into the ROM. As for the MHL cable, another good idea, but you could just as easily screen cast, no? But, for 5 U$D, or 18 zł PLN (take your pick) an MHL cable is a "worth it" experiment. And, if you're feeling adventurous
https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Sony+Xperia+Z3+Compact+LCD+Screen+Replacement/35488
From personal experience, the only real issues with the Z3C are that the LCD panel is held in place by adhesive, so you have to position those templates rather precisely, OR use glue :crying: OR double-sided tape AND, you have to be CAREFUL re-positioning the speaker. Caution and patience is all you need.
