New possible root method on Thinkpad tablet forums, by OPDECIRKEL. He needs help testing it out.

opdecirkel released the exploit -> http://opdecirkel.wordpress.com/2012/03/18/yareftpt/
unfortunately, it doesn't work. =( can't execute "adb remount" when the script calls for it, but hopefully things will get ironed out soon.
***EDIT***
updated script worked!

Not sure if it can help you, but try checking the TPT forum thread again, there has been some advances and troubleshooting going on

As the first post is just a link and contains no development, this has no place in this section
updated -> http://opdecirkel.wordpress.com/2012/03/18/yareftpt/
Someone thinkpadtabletforum reported that it worked for him.
updated script worked for me! cwm installed fine as well!
I achieved root with the new method on OTA 2.5. Also installed CWM with no issues. Works great.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
I can confirm it worked!
I had to update first because the "Disable Battery Discharge" option was not there. (I guess my Tablet stopped getting OTA updates since I was on ThinkPadTablet_A310_02_0024_0065_US... Also, you have to update one at a time, you can't go from 24_65 straight to 37_75. Also, I stopped at 39_86 since I was impatient.)
I like this once since we can see how it worked rather than blindly running some guys program (I never tried the first root.)
I can also confirm the new method to be working. Just rooted my 0089_WE TPT. Works like a charm

How did it fail? At which stage and what error did you get?
Okay, I'll try and flash the oldest update zip, and it fails as it should, then I wipe the cache part, reboot, and I hit enter when I gets to the unlock screen then the CMD window closes.
EDIT: I spent a good hour or so combing through my PC and these forums and tried both methods a lot, and this one finally worked. It wouldn't let me get to the /cache/recovery/pwn/su part of the script. Thank you all for your support.
I have problems...
Hi all,
Apologizes for my english, too bad to discuss this kind of issues. Sorry in advance.
I had the "fantastic" idea to update the firmware some weeks ago, when I was SU. After this, I've lost most of capabilities!
I tried to follow the procedure, but I cannot reach 'root' in any case. I have version WE089. Downloaded US060, but there's only 065 for Western Europe. I got both, just in case..
Unfortunately, in the first step it failed I'm not able to update anything. The process crashes when is loading old firmware, either US060 or WE065.
I've realised that during the process I loose the USB link connection (when I reboot), and the system tries to install again and again the driver. If the TPT is running in recovery mode, it seems that is not connected via USB... If I have the tablet in "normal use", I see it through the Windows Desktop.
Other question: should I disconnect the Internet connection?
I guess other requirements are right (ADBD, debugging mode,...). It's really annoying, it took me a lot of hours and I haven't found any solution.
Can anybody help me? What I'm doing wrong?
Cheers!

@jm
goto device manager. right click on Android device. reinstall device driver.
This worked for me in recovery when the device was not recognized.
Edit: look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1471106&page=2
What do you mean with loosing the connection? Is the adb driver installed correctly? Where did you get it from? Is it an genuine lenovo driver? If so, than you shouldn't worry!
Perhabs it's the MTP driver, that is missing when you boot into recovery? If it's the adb driver, than you should try jlove's method.
In addition I wanted to inform you, that the new method worked for me, too! Even with some complications... by this way, thanks again to opdecirkel!
Because the run.bat script did't worked correctly, I had to do it manually. So I put the "yareftpt" on C:\\, started cmd.exe, booted the TPT into recovery and changed the directory in cmd.exe with "cd.." to "cd yareftpt" ...followed the instructions with the update...
echo 4. Reboot in RECOVERY: (shutdown the tablet, then start it and press volume + few times until it starts in recovery)
echo 5. Go to apply update, select the update from the sdcard and try to apply it. It will fail, but that is OK.
echo 5. Then, go to 'WIPE CACHE PARTITION' and select it (navigate with volume buttons and select it with power button),
echo 6. When wipe cache complete, press (here) ^<ENTER^>.
and after that I copied the first line of the script into cmd and executed. I did it line after line, just to the next step. (dark green= copy line after line, paste and execute)
adb shell "/system/bin/mkdir /data/local/pwn"
adb shell "/system/bin/mkdir /data/local/pwn-bak"
adb shell "/system/bin/cat /system/etc/install-recovery.sh > /data/local/pwn-bak/install-recovery.sh.orig"
adb shell "/system/bin/mkdir /cache/recovery/pwn"
adb push su /cache/recovery/pwn
adb shell "/system/bin/rm /cache/recovery/log"
adb shell "/system/bin/ln -s /system/etc/install-recovery.sh /cache/recovery/log"
adb shell "echo \"/system/bin/chmod 777 /cache\" >> /tmp/recovery.log"
adb shell "echo \"/system/bin/mount -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p4 /cache\" >> /tmp/recovery.log"
adb shell "echo \"/system/bin/chmod 777 /cache\" >> /tmp/recovery.log"
adb shell "echo \"/system/bin/mount -oremount,rw -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p4 /cache\" >> /tmp/recovery.log"
adb shell "echo \"/system/bin/chmod 777 /cache\" >> /tmp/recovery.log"
adb shell "echo \"/system/bin/chmod 777 /cache/recovery\" >> /tmp/recovery.log"
adb shell "echo \"/system/bin/chown root /cache/recovery/pwn/su\" >> /tmp/recovery.log"
adb shell "echo \"/system/bin/chmod 4777 /cache/recovery/pwn/su\" >> /tmp/recovery.log"
echo 7. On the device, go to 'DISABLE BATTERY DISCHARGE' and select it. When complete press (here) ^<ENTER^>
pause
some of commands might cause failures, but don't worry and just go on
adb shell "/system/bin/rm /cache/recovery/log"
echo 8. On the device, select REBOOT. When startup COMPLETE press (here) ^<ENTER^>
pause
adb push Superuser.apk /data/local/pwn/Superuser.apk
adb push busybox /data/local/pwn/busybox
adb push su /data/local/pwn/su
adb push pwn-in.sh /data/local/pwn/pwn-in.sh
adb shell "/system/bin/chmod 777 /data/local/pwn/pwn-in.sh"
echo Your PC command prompt appears next. Do the following things:
echo 1. adb shell
echo when '$' (adb shell) appear, do:
echo 2. /cache/recovery/pwn/su
echo when '#' appears. You are root. run the following:
echo 3. /data/local/pwn/pwn-in.sh
now you should try if you have su, even if you don't see in your app list..
download root checker, install, open and try it!
You should have root right now.
In my case, i had root, but no CWM!
So I had to install in manually, but with root it should't be a problem. you only have to download the correct cwm version:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21916505&postcount=71
then I installed it with the Android Terminal Emulator app, because the cmd.exe method did't worked for me. You should just follow the instructions:
or you can copy img file on /data/local/ folder of your tablet (with a file manager with root permissions)
launch "Android Terminal Emulator" application
and tape the instructions
su
mount -o rw,remount /system
echo "#!/system/bin/sh" > /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
dd if=/data/local/NameOfCWMFile.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p1
http://www.thinkpadtabletforums.com...nd-development/clockworkmod-recovery-for-tpt/
After a shutdown and reboot into recovery I had cwm! So I am able to do nandroid backups...
In this way, I would particularly like to thank to all devs that made the TPT root possible! Now i like my TPT 1000% more than before...e.g. no status-bar in lecture notes -> sooo great!!
I do get the following error maybe someone can help me out

I'm a little rusty, but are the / and \ facing the correct way? And are you in the correct directory? Not found usually means path is incorrect.
@rangercaptain
thats the commands from the root script. I didnt change them.
the commands are send over from adb shell and the tablet is in root directory i think.
When i go into shell and type in ls i get access denied error.
and you load the update zip and wiped cache before typing the commands, right? You have to do this every time you try to root...
Try to do it with another method. Don't do it directly trough adb shell...just type the shell commands in the cmd.exe
You just have to chance the directory in cmd, before executing the commands.
Then try not to input 'adb shell' before the shortened command, but the whole command as one line like:
adb shell "/system/bin/mkdir /data/local/pwn"
Perhabs it will work..?!?
@neos
yes i do the same procedure.
I also tried over cmd with adb shell "command" and also in shell.
Always the same error.
I looked into the system/bin directory and mkdir does have filesize of 0kb...

I had to enter adb shell and hit enter before inputting the rest of that command just to get past that step. I tried doing the same with the next step and entering adb push separately but I got this:

adb: not found

Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong or leaving out? I have the recovery and flash saved to the tools folder of my sdk.
you cant use adb push from inside a shell
That's what the "how to root" instructions are telling me to do.

looks like you are "separating" steps...
3. Open up a command prompt and go to your tools directory, and execute these commands:
* adb shell mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
* adb push recovery.img /sdcard
* adb push flash_image /system/bin
* adb shell chmod 755 /system/bin/flash_image
* adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
(Taken from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=647707)
your command is "adb shell" (which is going to shell... in which, anonomouse is correct, you cannot "adb" inside a shell). instead, type 1 command like this:
- adb shell mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
re-read the thread (link i posted) again... you're close
from your post... you'd have to exit shell... then get back to a DOS prompt... then do the "adb push" command
If I type the adb shell mount command together I get an error. That's why I broke them up.
So basically, once in the tools directory, I should be able to copy and paste the commands (which is what I was doing)? I would need to get back in front of my home pc and I'll tell you what error I'm getting. I believe it was "adb: not found".

Make sure your sdcard is not mounted, it should be in charge only mode. Also make sure USB Debugging is on.
My phone was in charge mode and USB debugging was enabled, thanx.

You can use the application in this thread to help ease the process. They automated the commands through scripts to help in these situations. Plus, ECLIPS3 and Jamezelle do great work!

First the solution and then the explanation; note that I have included the command prompts here:
C:\android-sdk-windows\tools> adb shell
# mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
# exit
C:\android-sdk-windows\tools> adb push recovery-ra-eris.img /sdcard
C:\android-sdk-windows\tools> adb push recovery-ra-eris.img /sdcard
So, here's what is happening.
When you "break up the command", by making the first part the single line
Code:
adb shell
What you are getting is an interactive shell running on the phone. That shell does not terminate immediately; you can type an unlimited number of commands into it, one after another.
When you issue a command (from the PC's command window) which looks like this:
Code:
adb shell programname arg1 arg2 arg3 arg4
something a little different happens than in the first example: the program "programname" is launched on the phone, with the arguments "arg1", "arg2", et cetera - and the "shell" on the phone terminates as soon as "programname" is finished running
Note that the command prompt changed!
C:\android-sdk-windows\tools>
vs
#
So what happened? "adb" is a program on the PC, and NOT ON THE PHONE. When you typed "adb blah blah blah" into the interactive shell on the phone - guess what? you see "command not found".
If you insist on "splitting up the command", then go ahead (although I really don't see any reason why it wouldn't work in it's original format); just bear in mind you are typing commands into an interactive "command prompt" that is running on the phone. When it comes time to run other "adb" commands - you need to be at the PC's command prompt

Thanks for the info. You were right. I had just screwed something up when I typed it in the first time. Explaining the steps really helped me to understand what I was doing. I entered the commands as you had them in the tutorial and it worked perfect. So after that I created a backup and attempted to flash a custom rom:
I just ran a nandroid backup for my Eris which was at stock 2.1 w/ root. I first partitioned the sd to swap - 3072 MB, ext2 swap 3072 MB, and fat32 - remainder. Realizing this was stupid, I went back and changed the partition to swap - 0, ext2 - 512 MB, fat32 - remainder 7680 MB or 7.5 GB. I moved ext2 to ext3 and booted the phone. All my sd was cleared so I copied everything back on (I saved all sd contents to my computer prior to this). I went back to recovery and flashed Eris Lightning 3.02. Everything went successful and when it rebooted, I saw the droid guys, then the "quietly brilliant", then "Verizon" screens. It then began running the "quietly brilliant" and "verizon" screens over and over. I pulled the battery and powered up again but it's still running those two screens over and over. I booted into recovery and attached my phone to the computer. I opened command prompt, entered " sd C:\android-sdk-windows\tools" and then entered "adb devices". It reads "List of devices attached" but there are none. I attempted to add the driver back to my device but when I go to device manager and click "update driver" and point it to the tools directory in SDK, it says that "Windows could not find driver software for your device".
If I can't communicate with my phone via usb and it wont boot, how can I get it to recover?
Any suggestions would help, I'm scratching my head here. I really don't want to have to buy another phone.
It turns out I was just having another newbie moment. I did a wipe and reflashed the rom and it worked perfectly.
Hi I have been trying all evening to remove com.wsandroid.apk from my phone, using terminal but I simply cannot. I've tried many different commands and I'm just being told either permission denied, directory not found/not empty. I have a Wildfire which is obviously rooted. Please help me out, tearing my hair out here.
So you're using modaco custom rom?
Download the latest version of HTC Sync and install. This will also install the adb drivers. (I presume you use windows, if not, I apologise)
Download the Android SDK
Put the phone in fastboot mode (Power+Volume down) and plug it into your computer.
When the drivers are installed, use the command prompt to navigate to the tools folder within the android sdk folder.
Type the following commands, pressing enter at the end of each line:
adb shell
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock03 /system
cd app
rm -r com.wsandroid.apk
That should do it
I'm using the stock ROM but it is rooted with Unrevoked. I'll try these instructions anyway.
- Connect your phone to the PC
- Clear WaveScure's cache on the phone
- Open a command prompt
- go to run go to C:\androidSDK\tools and then run these 2 commands
1. adb remount
2. adb shell rm /system/app/*wsandroid*
Click to collapse
I'm trying these settings, but when I get to adb remount, I get this error: remount failed: Operation not permitted
EDIT: I put the phone into recovery mode and mounted it and it said remount succeeded, I then followed step 2. both *wsandroid* and com.wsandroid.apk and it says that they cannot be found.
EDIT: Nevermind, deleted it
There's currently no write access to system partition using Unrevoked on Wildfire. So you can't remove it. You flashed it with update.zip? I'm not an expert (yet) but I assume the only way (or easiest way) to remove it is to flash your stock ROM again.
So thecubed made a great tool to root, but the .bat file is intended for PC use. I'm on a Mac.
Could anyone extrapolate the adb commands used in that file? I'm familiar with adb and would have no issues with following the commands, I just can't seem to see exactly what the .bat file does.
tldr: what are the adb commands needed to root using his files? I can take it from there.
I'd love to know as well.

If anyone can't, they don't need to root.
If you know your carrier, skip all the carrier detect crap and go straight to pushing the correct root.
Then wait and push Su and the rest.
It's a pretty simple root via adb manually.
I just want tethering to work before I run out and get one.
Thank you very much!

By the way, this worked out just fine. I couldn't get it to work the first time around because the original method by thecubed didn't work with the ota. His update worked. Thank you, again.
A Mac root method (not automated)
I posted this in another Q&A thread, just wanted the answer to be available if someone may be following this. The two thread might need to be combined.
WARNING! This is just what worked for me, and it's just the adb commands from thecubed's program. All credit goes to him, I didn't do any of this, just took the info from it.
Here's the thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2448887
Download it, unzip it, and then take a moment to go back and thank him if you didn't do that.
You are not actually using his program, just the files and commands. Everything is done using Terminal and the Finder. You must have ADB working, look elsewhere for instructions on setting that up.
The files used here are the Verizon versions of the files, which I used for my phone. They are also specific to the OTA'd Verizon software, "11A" so there are different files if you haven't installed the OTA. These commands are correct, but the files being pushed aren't all the same between different carrier models and do not work with any other carrier. All the right stuff for other carriers is contained in thecubed's program.
The bold sections are files you need to send over adb, you can manually enter the file pathway or drag the files from finder into terminal after the adb commands (and before you type the destinations).
One more warning; if this is your first time using adb or terminal, I don't recommend this as your first try. It's super easy to screw something up in terminal.
Your phone must have developer options enabled and usb debugging on. Plug in your phone via usb and select "Internet" and then "Ethernet."
adb push ytiruces_1a_vzw /sdcard/ytiruces_1a
Unplug usb, disable USB debugging and then re-enable it. Plug USB back in.
adb shell "mount -o remount,rw /system"
adb push su /system/xbin/su
adb shell "chown 0.0 /system/xbin/su;chmod 06755 /system/xbin/su;sync;mount -o remount,ro /system"
adb install superuser.apk
exit
I see there are step by step videos for windows but none for Mac yet. I've rooted my last two phones but I followed videos which showed the exact process. I'm hoping someone eventually posts a Mac walk through video for the less confident users such as me.
I'm trying to follow the steps. When I run ./adb devices it lists my phone but says offline next to it. any ideas?
If you're on a Mac there's no "./" just "adb devices". You can't follow the commands in the .bat file without making those adjustments. Did you try following the commands in my post?

You need to be sure USB debugging is on, that you selected Internet>Ethernet when connected to USB, and my phone asked me if I wanted to allow connections from my computer. If all these are set up correctly it should work.
I have usb debugging on. My phone did ask me to confirm connection which I did. Then when I type ./adb devices it lists my phone but still says offline next to it. Being a noob at this I'm really stumped.
mjdupis can you please clarify what you mean when you say I don't need to type ./ before the command? My understanding was I always had to do this on a Mac?

The "/" is what you would use to point to a filepath. Like /Home/Library/Root or a file on the phone /System. If you look at the commands I listed there are no ./ before any adb commands, that's a windows thing.
Terminal tells me there's no such directory when I put ./ before adb commands, because it thinks I'm trying to direct it to an adb folder.
I reinstalled everything and now its finally recognizing my phone. Now I just have to figure out how to do this. Sorry to keep asking, but can someone confirm if this is right...
Now that it recognizes my phone
I type adb push then drag the file ytiruces_1a_vzw into terminal and then type /sdcard/ytiruces_1a and hit enter.
Then unplug the cord from phone, turn of debugging and back on then plug the cord back in. then select internet ethernet to activate debugging.
Then type adb shell and hit enter.
Then type mount -o remount,rw /system and hit enter.
Is this correct so far??
thanks for your help!!

Actually, looks like I figured it out. Got phone rooted... Thanks again for the help!
Could use your help again! Got my phone rooted and installed TWRP. Everything was working great. Running stock rom. Only mod I had done was the black notification bar. I installed an app from the market called LCD Density. Tried changing my phone from 320 to 300. It then reboots the phone for it to take affect. My phone is now stuck in a bootloop on the LG logo screen with the LED flashing. I can get into TWRP but the problem is I never made a back up or downloaded a rom onto the phone as I hadn't planned to flash any roms. Is there any way I can get a rom onto my phone so I can then flash it in TWRP? I have a Mac.. Thanks for any help...
Got it fixed! Was finally able to connect to my Mac. Then put a rom on the phone using ADB and flashed the rom.
It took some doing, but after following the instructions in this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559915
I was finally able to root my Nook Glowlight. The instructions are kind of sprawled out and extremely unclear so I will sum up.
As always, you will need the ADB. In order to install the ADB, you need the Java Development Kit and the Android Studio (formerly known as the Android SDK)
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html
http://developer.android.com/sdk/installing/studio.html
How to obtain root via ADB: The ONLY way you can root is using Windows. I was successful on Windows 7 32 bit, but it may be possible on other versions.
step 1) install bootloader driver.
You need to grab the drivers from here (bnusbdrivers.zip):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49665945&postcount=279&nocache=1&z=184593200683593
then, open the Device Manager (on Windows). Be ready to right click on the new device 'omap3660' that shows.
With the nook turned completely off, plug in a USB cable. you will have less than 3 seconds to right click the new omap3660 device that shows up in the system profiler.
If you were successful and you right clicked on it in time, manually install the Barnes & Noble USB driver (there are entries added to the generic Google drivers for both the TI Omap 3660 bootloader and the ADB device after you modify the uRamdisk later on)
***NOTE***
If you WEREN'T successful on your first try (took me THREE times to get to it in time), you aren't going to get another chance to install the drivers. At least not easily anyway, because after Windows tries to automatically install the drivers for the bootloader and fails, it will disregard the device any time it shows up after that. So, you are going to need to delete the registry entries that it created, which in my experience was easier said than done. Even admin access was not sufficient to make the necessary changes to the registry.
You will need to launch regedit.exe using another tool called psexec which is available here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897553.aspx
after you download the pstools package, copy those .exe files to C:\Windows\System32\ (in order to add them to $PATH in cmd.exe)
Then, once you've installed the pstools commands to C:\Windows\System32\, run cmd.exe as admin (right click it and select 'run as administrator') and then open regedit.exe with the following command
Code:
psexec -s -i -d regedit.exe
Then, once regedit is open you need to find the keys created by the Nook bootloader and delete them. The Nook bootloader's device ID is 0451:d00e
You are going to be looking in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Current Control Set\enum\usb\ for the keys with the bootloader's device IDs. There may also be keys generated in control set 001 and 002 as well. Delete all of those keys and then reboot your computer. Then with the nook power off completely, repeat the process from the first step. eventually you will be successful installing the bootloader driver.
Step 2) temporarily boot with uRamdisk-noogie
you need to download omaplink.exe from here:
http://www.temblast.com/android.htm
and you also need to download the four files which allow you to temporarily mount the boot partition; omap3_aboot.bin, u-boot-ng2-exp-v03.bin, uImage-ng2-130-stk and uRamdisk-noogie.
They are available here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=49779966&postcount=285
download usbboot-ng2-images-noogie-v1.zip
The next part is easy.
Extract the .zip file and then fire up cmd.exe. cd into the directory of the newly extracted .zip
in the new working directory, enter the command
Code:
omaplink omap3_aboot.bin u-boot-ng2-exp-v03.bin uImage-ng2-130-stk uRamdisk-noogie
Then, with the Nook powered all the way off and omaplink running, plug it in and a few seconds later, after the device boots up all the way, you will be looking at the contents of the boot partition instead of the internal storage like normal.
Step 3) Edit uRamdisk
you will need to download bootutil.exe from here
http://www.temblast.com/android.htm
copy bootutil.exe to C:\Windows\System32
with the boot partition mounted, copy uRamdisk to your computer and extract the files init.rc and default.prop, eg;
Code:
bootutil /x /v uRamdisk init.rc default.prop
then using notepad++ (available here: http://notepad-plus-plus.org/) edit the files as follows
default.prop
ro.secure=0
ro.allow.mock.location=1
ro.debuggable=1
persist.service.adb.enable=1
and
init.rc
comment out lines 375 and 392-399
(do this by adding a # to the beginning of the line)
uncomment line 215
(do this by deleting the # at the beginning of the line)
save both files and then repack them into uRamdisk
Code:
bootutil /r /v uRamdisk init.rc default.prop
copy uRamdisk back onto the Nook, eject the disk and power off the device. Reboot and you should be able to connect to ADB via WiFi
eg;
Code:
adb connect 192.168.0.10
replacing '10' with whatever IP your Nook is grabbing from your router.
Step 4) Full Root
at this point, you have root access via ADB only. You will not have root access in any apps like Root Explorer, Terminal, TiBackup, etc.
In order to finish PROPERLY rooting your Nook, you need to install 'su' to /system/bin/ and install the superuser.apk
Code:
adb connect 192.168.0.10
adb shell mount -o remount, rw /system
adb push su /system/bin/
adb shell chmod 6755 /system/bin/su
adb install superuser.apk
reboot your device one more time and then you will be fully rooted.
*** Note ***
this devices firmware seems to be a strange hybrid between donut and eclair, although it purports itself to be Android 2.1. The Superuser.apk and su binary came from an old Cyanogenmod 4.6 build in case anyone was wondering (Android Donut). The ones from Cyanogenmod 5 (Android Eclair) do not work. you will get the 'install failed older sdk' error.
installing busybox
I tired installing busybox by using the stericson busybox pro.apk. It would always freeze at 6.47%.
I figured out that if I grabbed an older version of the busybox binary and pushed it to /system/xbin manually and then chmodded it to the proper permissions, auto updates and proper symlinking work using the busybox app
Code:
adb shell mount -o remount, rw /system
adb shell mkdir -p /system/xbin
adb push busybox /system/xbin
adb shell chmod 6755 /system/xbin/busybox
adb install busybox.apk
Then reboot, and run the busybox app to update and create symlinks.
enjoy!
installing nano and bash
Code:
adb connect 192.168.0.10
adb shell
mount -o remount, rw /system
adb push nano /system/xbin/
chmod 6755 /system/xbin/nano
adb push bash /system/xbin/
chmod 6755 /system/xbin/bash
bash
mv /system/bin/sh /system/bin/sh.bak
ln -s /system/xbin/bash /system/bin/sh
chmod 6755 /system/bin/sh
adb push profile /system/etc/
adb push terminfo /system/etc/
and then in terminal emulator under 'Preferences' change the initial command to
Code:
export TERMINFO=/system/etc/terminfo;export TERM=linux;export HOME=/sdcard;
and finally
Code:
adb push bashrc /sdcard
adb shell
mv /sdcard/bashrc /sdcard/.bashrc
exit
nano works just fine via ADB, but because of lack of 'ctrl' key (and physical buttons to assign it to) you won't be able to write files (ctrl+o) using the terminal on your nook. But between having full proper root access, busybox, a proper bash terminal emulator and nano for editing config files, this should REALLY extend the usefulness of your Nook Glowlight. It should work just fine on other versions of Nook too.
Hi N00b-un-2,
Many thanks for your summary!
There is one important edit that I think you missed,
in init.rc you also need to:
Line #375, comment out "disabled" with a # at the start of the line.
(see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=49070213#post49070213)
without this I couldn't get adb to connect.
And since you already made it very noob friendly, might I suggested you clarify:
Line #215 remove # to enable adb over wifi
(rather than search for 5555)
Also, I'm not expert, but I believe the commands to get superuser on the device are (at least it worked for me):
adb connect 192.168.x.x
adb shell mount -o remount, rw /system
adb push su /system/bin/
adb shell chmod 6755 /system/bin/su
adb install superuser.apk
Finally, I'm not sure if this is important, but maybe remount system as read only again:
adb shell mount -o remount, ro /system
Thanks again, nice work!
---------- Post added at 01:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:10 PM ----------
Hi again,
had similar issues with installing busybox, here's what worked for me (note needed to run su to create dir):
adb shell mount -o remount, rw /system
adb shell /system/bin/su
adb shell mkdir -p /system/xbin
adb push busybox /system/xbin
adb shell chmod 6755 /system/xbin/busybox
adb install busybox.apk
cheers.
As far as remounting /system as ro, I would HIGHLY recommend just rebooting at this point, otherwise your nook might be stuck in a weird pseudo-rooted state. Probably won't cause any problems, but why risk it?
Thanks for clarifying the line number. I will make the appropriate edits to my instructions. I was working off the top of my head and couldn't remember what exact line the ADB over TCP config was, as I just used ctrl+w '5555' to find it myself.
There are several pre-edited uRamdisk images floating around the forum with various features enabled which would be easier for noobs than extracting the config files and manually editing and then repacking them. In the future I'll probably throw those on here as well.

Sorry for the really noob question, I have rooted, wifi adb running and installed apps as per your instructions, but I can't seem to access any of it on the nook. How can I get access to the launcher I installed?
You mentioned pre-edited images, do any of those come with the apps I need to get access to a custom launcher?
Cheers,
Dariusz

For some reason had some issues with ADW launcher, Launcher pro worked fine.
ps I think I made a mistake with the su step I suggested, if you run a one line shell command I don't think it keeps su privileges, so I believe you need to run commands within the shell as per below:
adb shell
mount -o remount, rw /system
/system/bin/su
mkdir -p /system/xbin
exit
adb push busybox /system/xbin
adb shell chmod 6755 /system/xbin/busybox
adb install busybox.apk

Before you perform the adb connect step you need to find out what your IP address is:
On your nook, click on the settings icon in the top right corner and then select "Change"
Under Wireless Networks, select the wifi name that you are already connected to (where it says "Connected to the internet")
This will display your connection details, remember that IP address
Now go back to your pc and type:
adb connect [IP address]

BIG HINT! If you're using Powershell ISE, you have to type .\adb.exe connect [IP address] or else it won't recognize "adb" as an executable!
Don't ask why, because I don't know. :?

I just gave a little tip on Powershell ISE. I do not know much about the Nook GlowLight rooting process, as I have a NSTG, not a NG. Ask someone else.

But that's okay! What I said was, if you are using the command program Powershell ISE, do it that way instead. But you are just using cmd.exe, not Powershell ISE!
In cmd.exe, which is what you are using, it is not neccessary to type .\adb.exe. Just type adb.
From there, ask someone else in this thread.

I prefer to use ConEmu or Console2 when I am forced to use Windows. Not a big fan of CMD.EXE or Powershell/PowershellISE. there are plenty of other CLI alternatives out there

Well, as I ONLY use Windows and Powershell ISE has a nice-enough layout for my purposes, I use it. That's why I gave a tip on it.
Actually on a lot of installs just typing adb in the command console won't work either unless it's got the path variable set up correctly, I find it easiest to just right click and choose run as administrator, no need for the path to be setup.

This rooting procedure is for the new Nook GlowLight with firmware 1.3.1. Your device is a Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight, which can be rooted very easily using the rooting package here.
Ok, so I got TWRP on the phone then I used Flash Fire to try and get Android 7 while maintaining custom recovery (and even was supposed to inject SuperSU. It went and did it's thing and on boot I saw SuperSU on phone so I thought hey I am good sweet. HA, Well open it and it said can't find binary, ut oh. I go to manually boot recovery and it wipes user data instead so I lost TWRP.
Well Ok, I thought. Let me LG UP the modified TOT and select refurb to just get me back to Marshmellow with TWRP and try again. YEAH RIGHT. Looks like the Android 7 update blows another qfuse and now LG UP just states anti rollback version is smaller than installed.
I WANT ROOT I PAID FOR THIS THING IN FULL WHY IS IT SOO HARD FOR MANUFACTURERS TO ALLOW ME ACCESS TO MY OWN HARDWARE. When I buy a computer with an OS they don't give me a user only level account and tell me it is for my own good. They allow me to do whatever I WANT because you know why I BOUGHT THE HARDWARE IN FULL AND the supreme court has said no subsidy locks allowed as when a user buys a device it is theirs not yours. I feel this is another version of a subsidy lock at the rate we are going and I can't wait until someone with the time and money sues an OEM and wins us the right to not jump through all these damn hoops to be allowed to do what we wish with the hardware we buy IN FULL NOW.
Ok, rant over, Anyone out there know of a way to root android 7 on the H830? I dunno if a dev could maybe mod up a 20a image so that we can LGUP it to the H830s that have Android 7 and need root.
@RealPariah here ya go follow this Thanks to @godfather123189 for finding these instructions:
i can confirm dirtycow worked for me to reflash twrp. you have to make sure to have the newest version of twrp.img. i was also able to root 20a with the newest supersu.zip.
i will try going back to 10j nandroid i had made before i upgraded to 20a
download all the files from here:
https://build.nethunter.com/android-tools/dirtycow/arm64/
and follow these instructions:
**pushing files**
adb push dirtycow /data/local/tmp
adb push recowvery-applypatch /data/local/tmp
adb push recowvery-app_process64 /data/local/tmp
adb push recowvery-run-as /data/local/tmp
adb push twrp.img /sdcard/twrp.img
**end pushing files**
1) adb shell
2) cd /data/local/tmp
3) chmod 0777 *
4) ./dirtycow /system/bin/applypatch recowvery-applypatch
"<wait for completion>"
5) ./dirtycow /system/bin/app_process64 recowvery-app_process64
"<wait for completion, your phone will look like it's crashing>"
6) exit
7) adb logcat -s recowvery
"<wait for it to tell you it was successful>"
8) CTRL+C
9) adb shell reboot recovery
"<wait for phone to boot up again, your recovery will be reflashed to stock>"
10) adb shell
11) getenforce
"<it should say Permissive, adjust source and build for your device!>"
12) cd /data/local/tmp
13) ./dirtycow /system/bin/run-as recowvery-run-as
14) run-as exec ./recowvery-applypatch boot
"<wait for it to flash your boot image this time>"
15) run-as su
16) dd if=/sdcard/twrp.img of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/recovery
Well you arent alone. And I agree , I fully own my device and I think I should be able to do what ever the living F*&% I want with it .
Its only a question of time though, these guys are the best there are at cracking through companies 'efforts at locking us out of our own shiznat....in the meantime setup the stuff you can without ROOT (no Titanium Backup....*sniff) LOL.
Before long we'll wake up and see TWRP attached to the ROM like before and all will be well. Cheers
OK after 2 days of attempting this without even wrapping my head around the idea of how to access /data/local/temp without being rooted to begin with I hereby surrender :crying:

I mean Im fully versed in the very basics of Fastboot/ADB as a long time Nexus user.Push, pull flashing recoveries and the other relatively easy stuff. But I cant get this worth a crap .....

OK here goes my best attempt at explaining it, you need to have your phone turned on with Android debugging turned on as well plug your phone into the pc and then accept the request from adb to access the device. Then start running the adb commands starting with the ones under ***pushing files*** then start following the steps 1-16. Let me know if you have any more questions or something you don't understand. Hopefully this was helpful. P.S. I also had all of the downloaded files inside my adb folder and opened the command window from that folder.

I think you may be right, and as I am copy pasting now Ive been been able to get past it.
I still was able to get root last night with it but was denied access to data in the end so I had to go back.Thank you!
when you finally get to "adb shell reboot recovery" did yours boot to the Firmware Update page? or to something else....mine repeatedly goes to Firmware update then of course isnt seen by adb anymore and no recovery is ever flashed I dont think..

No mine rebooted and I finished the rest of the steps I would try going through the steps again and copy and paste everything into adb window. I think in order for twrp to be flashed you have to finish all 16 steps.

Roger will do thank you!
nah its no good.No matter what it will only go to that Firmware page. All the commands are correct. It must be something in my setup itself.
I had wondererd am I supposed to leave the cable in for the entirety of the 16 steps (which I have done)?

Yes I did, you might try using lg up and reflashing 20a and then trying again.
OK I went full on fresh as possible all installs.
Uninstalled reinstalled all drivers/ utils (Uppercut,LGUP ect.)
Copied all instructions to a separate file to ease copying
all before taking your advice (which I thought sounded like the right direction to go) and reflashing 20a.KMZ in LGUP.
Still the result is the same, step 9 (reboot to recovery) leads only to the Firmware Update screen ~~~~~> https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B03a0JRwWhkwX1RQdmlSRmh5c0U AND https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B03a0JRwWhkwT0lMNEViNGIxWkE
Also I want to mention, when I try to directly copy the chmod as is (0777 *) I get a permission denied so Ive been changing it to 0777* (no space between the asterisk [regex] and the last 7) which seems to work as I am able to continue entering code....
man and I thought Samsung devices were a pain to root lol.
Thanks so much for all the help so far Im usually not this much trouble....

You're not being any trouble I just wish I knew why yours isn't working correctly
ok update..... I used the devices internal settings to do a factory reset then reinstalled 20a.THAT made it to where I am now able to grant the proper permissions to /data/local/tmp.However,I still wind up at the Firmware Update page after >adb shell reboot recovery instead of the recovery screen or just a reboot....but I guess its small progress.

@RealPariah here ya go follow this Thanks to @godfather123189 for finding these instructions:
i can confirm dirtycow worked for me to reflash twrp. you have to make sure to have the newest version of twrp.img. i was also able to root 20a with the newest supersu.zip.
i will try going back to 10j nandroid i had made before i upgraded to 20a
download all the files from here:
https://build.nethunter.com/android-tools/dirtycow/arm64/
and follow these instructions:
**pushing files**
adb push dirtycow /data/local/tmp
adb push recowvery-applypatch /data/local/tmp
adb push recowvery-app_process64 /data/local/tmp
adb push recowvery-run-as /data/local/tmp
adb push twrp.img /sdcard/twrp.img
**end pushing files**
1) adb shell
2) cd /data/local/tmp
3) chmod 0777 *
4) ./dirtycow /system/bin/applypatch recowvery-applypatch
"<wait for completion>"
5) ./dirtycow /system/bin/app_process64 recowvery-app_process64
"<wait for completion, your phone will look like it's crashing>"
6) exit
7) adb logcat -s recowvery
"<wait for it to tell you it was successful>"
8) CTRL+C
9) adb shell reboot recovery
"<wait for phone to boot up again, your recovery will be reflashed to stock>"
10) adb shell
11) getenforce
"<it should say Permissive, adjust source and build for your device!>"
12) cd /data/local/tmp
13) ./dirtycow /system/bin/run-as recowvery-run-as
14) run-as exec ./recowvery-applypatch boot
"<wait for it to flash your boot image this time>"
15) run-as su
16) dd if=/sdcard/twrp.img of=/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/recovery
