why so seriouse (launchers) - Kindle Fire General

Why do so many launchers force close on the kindle fire? Is their a way to fix this?
Ex:the following launchers force close:
°fullscreen launcher
°ics launcher late build
°launcher pro
°Regina launcher
°spb shell 3d
°launcher 7
°nemus launcher
Etc...
The following launchers don't force close:
°HCL
°360 launcher
°adw launcher ex
°Go launcher
°ics launcher early build
Any more?

Try CM7.

ADW EX works perfect. The normal ADW is unstable.

I could of sworn i tested that, but i was probably thinking of launcher pro.But yeah your right,i just tested it

Use adw ex on my KF, works great

I used go launcher ex for 2 months before going to ics for daily use Never had any problems.

The original ics launcher works well. I tried the late build, and it crashes. The original one is stable.

Just stick to Go and ADW, the other ones suck anyways (as far as 3rd party launchers are concerned imo)

ADW EX doesn't have really small area on screen for those of you who us it?

You obviously don't run CM9. Nova Launcher is righteous.

I have a feeling it's because the Kindle version of Android is so heavily tweaked. You should really try a ROM, they work well.

Sims 3 install error "Couldn't clear application caches"

I didn't want to hijack the other Sims 3 heap thread although it may be related, so I'm asking here. The other thread made me think of the game and I thought I would give it a shot. When I start it, I suppose it needs to install, but it comes up and says out of space. I have 1.46gb available application storage, 125mb free memory and lot's of sdcard and sd storage.
Logcat says it couldn't clear application caches. Does anyone know why that would be?

I'm having the same problem
yup same here in the midst of playing the game that pops up and kicks me out...

I guess SIMS stores its data in the app partition which you are essentially relocating with this hack to a place where you have 130mb limit for your applications. This hack relies on apps to store their data somewhere else, like on SD card. Look at MODACO thread, some people were having issues with Google Maps even because apparently it caches stuff on apps partition. Anyways, I didn't feel much of a difference at all with the hack and without, I reverted and will keep it stock for now.

This makes sense... Have you all done the hack? I'll revert back and see what happens... Man, I'll miss the extra speed if this pans out to be the culprit...
Yepper, that was it. I reverted the data directory back to the original location, rebooted and The Sims 3 is now installing as I type... I guess that's good and bad news... I'll have to see how much the lagging annoys me and see which way I want to go... Anyways, hope this helps.
Mind telling how you fixed that error again step by step or where to find?
How I got my sims to work
First thing I had to do was uninstall the lag fix, as it would crash all the time as it was taking up to much of the memory. When back to normal non lag fix I would get the heap error when buying and moving stuff, usually could buy 2 things, or move 2 things, or one of each and then on the 3rd thing i would get the heap error. So following the suggestion of someone else that uprooted the entire garden and the error stopped, so i tried this and it fixed the heap error issue, I only tested for one day, but i moved and sold about 50 things in a row without an issue. Like i said before i could never even do 3 in a row. So no lag fix and not garden and everything works fine on the sims 3.
Credit goes to to lund0529 for figuring this out.

aLogcat logfiles question

I've tried clearing the dalvikvm cache but that didn't solve my 'problem'.
My concern was when opening aLogcat, it puts
"D/dalvikvm( 1451): GC_EXPLICIT freed 655 objects / 23384 bytes in 40ms"
over and over
usually the 1451 stays the same, randomly it will be another number, not often.
It logs this message once every second, this seems unnecessary, but might not be...
Can anyone offer some suggestions as to what dalvikvm is doing and if it is necessary to stop it?
I've seen other people post their log files but they do not have this dalvikvm process going on.
I do have a modified prop.build file installed, i've attached it if anyone thinks it's worth looking at.

That has to do with the 'level' or verbosity of the log your seeing. Those are low-level events. I forget how to do this in alogcat, but you just need to change the verbosity level and it won't show them

[Tutorial] How to get a Logcat -example - check for Battery drain

How To Get A Logcat
Well I always read on the forum about logcat, I knew it was about getting logs or system activity, thought it was a very difficult thing to do and then I read about it and realized it is so simple. In the below explanation
I will show you an app which is running even when it should not and hence draining the battery. So, here we go.
What is logcat?
Logcat is the command to view the internal logs of the Andr
oid system. Viewing logs is often the best way to diagnose a problem, and is required for many issues. This way you'll find out what apps are doing in the background without you noticing.
Advantages of Logcat-
*Debugging
*You can see what processes are running, if a process is running after a certain interval of time, it will eat battery. So you can also find out what is draining your battery.
Etc.....
How do I install it?
1.Make sure you've enabled on USB debugging on your phone in Settings->Application ->Development
2. Get the Android SDK here:--http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
3.Extract the SDK to any folder say C:\Android
4.Make sure that you have installed the drivers for your phone and the operating system recognizes your phone.
Everything installed? Continuing...
Now how to actually access the log, everything in*italic*are commands you need to enter.
1-Open the 'run' dialog by pressing the 'Windows' + 'r' buttons on your keyboard (minimize the browser & other non-windows programs)
2-cmd*(this will open a DOS prompt)
3-cd c:\Android\tools*(go to the directory where you extracted the SDK)
4-adb shell
5-Now you'll see just a '$'logcat
You can now just press the power button on your phone to see what happens. It displays everything the device is doing.
So the thing is: leave your device connected for a while and see what is actually going on when you're not using it.
An Example
>Twidroid auto refreshing my Tweets
Code:
D/dalvikvm( 1287): GC freed 3 objects / 72 bytes in 92ms D/dalvikvm( 2216): GC freed 6646 objects / 313032 bytes in 104ms D/NetworkLocationProvider( 75): onCellLocationChanged [***] D/LocationManager( 2216): removeUpdates: listener = com.levelup.beautifulwidgets [email protected] D/dalvikvm( 1253): GC freed 281 objects / 12688 bytes in 93ms D/NetworkLocationProvider( 75): onCellLocationChanged [***] D/LocationManager( 2216): removeUpdates: listener = com.levelup.beautifulwidgets [email protected] D/dalvikvm( 75): GC freed 41839 objects / 1963448 bytes in 88ms D/dalvikvm( 1287): GC freed 3 objects / 72 bytes in 94ms D/NetworkLocationProvider( 75): onCellLocationChanged [***] D/LocationManager( 2216): removeUpdates: listener = com.levelup.beautifulwidgets [email protected] D/dalvikvm( 2216): GC freed 6657 objects / 314648 bytes in 35ms D/NetworkLocationProvider( 75): onCellLocationChanged [***] D/LocationManager( 2216): removeUpdates: listener = com.levelup.beautifulwidgets [email protected] D/dalvikvm( 1253): GC freed 279 objects / 12640 bytes in 94ms D/NetworkLocationProvider( 75): onCellLocationChanged [***] D/LocationManager( 2216): removeUpdates: listener = com.levelup.beautifulwidgets [email protected] D/dalvikvm( 1287): GC freed 3 objects / 72 bytes in 60ms D/dalvikvm( 2216): GC freed 6661 objects / 314192 bytes in 104ms D/NetworkLocationProvider( 75): onCellLocationChanged [***] D/LocationManager( 2216): removeUpdates: listener = com.levelup.beautifulwidgets [email protected]
If you're seeing apps that are constantly busy when they shouldn't that means they're draining battery because of bugs in the app/ bad coding/ ...
There are vaious examples. In this i took an example of battery drain.
Hope it helps you.

I downloaded the 2.0 alpha of Fennec for Android from here:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/releases/2.0a1/android-r7/fennec.apk
I did this yesterday... I installed the recommended Readability plugin v .6. I installed NoScript (which is my main reason for wanting FireFox over other options).
I am very new to Android; so, pardon me if this isn't worded right or if I say something that is obvious to those of you with more time with it...
The browser works, but the fonts are so small I cannot read most pages. When I try to spread my fingers apart on the screen to zoom in, nothing happens. I set up Sync, but after over 24 hours it still says "in progress" and none of my desktop bookmarks have arrived on my NST.
The Readability plugin does the same thing the "Article Mode" on the experimental browser in my Kindle did. It finds what it thinks is the main article on the page, narrows it down to text and presents it full screen. I have to set it to X-Large font, and it doesn't seem to remember that setting from session to session.
With NoScript enabled, the program crashes whenever I try to open a web page. This even happens if I set NoScript to allow scripts globally. :crying:
More to follow.
My NST is firmware 1.2.1 rooted w NookManager...

I was able to upgrade to 4.0b1 by installing this file:
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/releases/4.0b1-real/android-r7/fennec.apk
At first, I thought it took several minutes for Firefox to load. There is a screen that has a "firefox is loading" message that pops up and doesn't go away for a VERY long time. What I discovered is that if I open it, go to the ReLaunch home screen and click the program again, it will go directly to the start screen.
The options and enable buttons were greyed out on NoScript; so, I uninstalled it. Searching for NoScript in the Add-ons returns nothing. Evidently it is not compatible.
Going to full version websites... The font is more readable, and swiping my fingers apart now will zoom in, but the NST quickly locks up and requires power down to get it going again.
Going to a mobile site, I had good results and not crash / freezing.
With the 2.0 beta version, I was not able to view the "all available plugins" screen at Mozilla. This version brings it up without a hitch.
Readability still does not preserve my options from session to session.
The Sync Last Update item still shows "in progress". Clicking the Sync Now button does not seem to have any effect.
I will post if I make any further progress...
I added a Class 10 microSD card to my NST, then installed Swapper2.
I set Swapper2 to make a 256MB swap file, set swappiness to 60.
The problems I describe above with full websites disappeared.
I tried upgrading to 5.0 using the fennec-5.0.en-US.eabi-arm.apk file from the mozilla ftp page. It did not work when I downloaded the file into the NST and clicked it there. It also did not work when I tried to install it using adb.
I also created a discussion thread on the mozilla community support forums: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/965669
If you are interested in running firefox on your rooted NST, it may (or may not) be helpful if you click the "I also have this problem" button on the mozilla thread...

I am searching for exactly when installation fails.
I just upgraded to 4.0b2 successfully. The "Firefox is loading" page now disappears on its own. I have not done anything else with it, but it did install w/o problems.
4.0b3 does not install. I will next go to the nightly builds ( http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mobile/nightly/ ) to look for the exact point where failure occurs...
update: mozilla-central-android-r7 4.0b3pre builds install up to and including 12-02-2010. The 12-03-2010 prebuild is the one where the Native ABI mismatch begins.
update: although firefox mobile installs and works, please be aware that firefox's sync feature does NOT work. This is due ot B&N modifications to android on the device...

[Q] Stream on youtube

Same on all of my devices (4.0 - 4.4). It must be connected to my Google Account settings + newer YouTube version. Older YT version 5.7.41 works OK.
So what's so special about my Google Account?:
- Localization (UA)
- Channel name is different from my Google Account name. Actually I have to select one of either GA name or YT channel name every time I install YT.
