Unlocking the Note - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

I may get the opportunity to buy a Galaxy Note for a good price BUT its locked to a service. My question is, how difficult is it to root and unlock it? I have an old Galaxy S right now that I have rooted and changed roms on several times. I have some experience that is. I just dont know what the scene is like with the Galaxy Note.
Thanx

new Tab owner

My wife just gave me a late Christmas present, a shining Galaxy Tab to go with my Captivate. Now that I'm part of the XDA Galaxy owners forum, what are the things I can do with it outside the Captivate?? What essential apps and can it be rooted? I'm also looking in the forums but I justed want to make a post just in case I miss some key threads and links. Thanks!

Yes it can be rooted and really its just a giant captivate without all the sweet hacked Roms and kernels to pick from.

For friends, does that have to be people using Galaxy Note or any Samsung phones?

My story is supported by note, s2,s3. So only people with those phones can use it.

Unfortunately a pretty useless app.
I did not see that mentioned in the publicity.
That's always the problem with such proprietary software. If they really want mystory to be used they will have to release it for non Samsung phones too. Without support for other phones it is going to disappear sooner or later. I for example do not know one single person I can send mystory messages. I don't even know why I installed it

You just need to factory unlock it. If you can't get the unlock code from att there are YouTube videos of how to do it for free. I did it for free with the method of restoring the golden backup. Only took 5 mins.

Free methods don't work on newer firmwares. Only AT&T or a paid company can unlock it.

Yeah I was thinking about that as I was writing it to him. When I did it I was on 4.2 with the first build the phone came with. I think amdl. Either way you got options bud. You can buy a unlock code from amazon or eBay for really cheap

You can try this link https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/client/en_GB/
I did
I did it a month ago and it works well. Get an unlock doe from the website that costs $30 if you cant find a free way, i tried the one for $6 and they sent me my money back 2 days later because they couldn't do it. Once unlocked use the APN from these settings:
http://www.4gtricks.com/2013/04/t-mobile-4g-apn-t-mobile-4g-apn-settings.html
I tried all of the other ways for it and none of get the full LTE speeds like that one.

Would you by an S4 again?

I am on an original Galaxy Note and will be ready for an upgrade in a few months. I am looking at the S4, among others. I am leary of getting another Samsung device only to have Sammy abandon it for its successor, leaving owners in the lunch. I was an early adopter of the Note and now, 19 months on we have the Note 3 out and Sammy stopped supporting upgrades on the original Note not long after the device was just a year old.
My question is....knowing what you know today, would you buy another S4? If so, why? If you wouldn't, what bothers you most?
What would you buy in place of the S4?
Thanks to you all.

Lurch. Not lunch.

At this point, I would not, you'd have a locked bootloader and an older phone. I'd probably get a nexus 5.

You may as well wait and see what the S5 offers. The launch might coincide with your upgrade timeline anyways. Aside from that, I also came from an O.G. Note to the S4. While I do love it, I kinda wish I had gone with a Note 3. I was spoiled by the larger screen. :-$ And yes, locked bootloader does suck. Really limits development. And we are coming up on a year that this phone has been on the market.

I just upgraded from the skyrocket to the S4 a week ago and I'm not disappointed at all. I was lucky that it came with the MDL build do it was easy to root and get TWRP flashed as recovery. I installed the Xposed framework and a module to enable "hold back to kill" feature as well as a couple others that I like. I actually think I'm done modding the phone now, it does everything I want it to do.
Do would I do it again...absolutely!

From Note 2 to Note 3

Hello, I'm a new member of xda.
I have an answer for you. I have decided to buy a Note 3 but there is the problem of knox. My question is this: There is a way to delete KNOX?
Nobody knows how to solve my problem?
Have you tried posting in the Note 3 Forum?

I suggest go to note 4...at present there is no much difference remaining in both devices because of Note 3 Mode from great devs..you just have to wait 5-month more...till then enjoy N3 and S5 modes in Note 2

Brodah I think you posted in the wrong forum but I will answer your question. SuperSU will disable knox but the problem is do you really want to root a Rs.47000 phone right away. THINK TWICE
