CM 9 install - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

to be sure for installation CM9.
I have CM7 installed for the moment on defy. So I download http://defy-cm.net/defy-cm9-nightly/ and then follow tut : how to flash ICS (defy builds)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1432100
Did i pass the test ?

Yes, this should work. However don't forget to flash Google apps for ICS (link in the post you linked) if you want to have access to Google Apps and Google Play (formerly Market). You also don't need to flash kernel in the case you described.
I would suggest the folowing scenario for you (based on nogoodusername's scenario from the post you linked):
1:Head Over To Stable recovery
2:Wipe Data
3a:Install ZIp from SD Card
3b:Select ICS(Defy) .zip
3c:Flash
4:Clear Cache and Dalvik Cache
5a:Install Zip from SD Card
5b:Select Gapps-ics
5c:Flash
6:Reboot

[solved] Google Apps to Data Solution

Hello everyone:
I have a really weird bug in my Google Apps to Data zip: http://teamuscellular.com/downloads/gapps-ennonedit.zip (no it's not signed, sorry)
I have an HTC Desire (CDMA), which this is being tested on with CyanogenMod 6.1 RC & Nightlies.
What I did with this zip is simply moved the updatable gapps from system to data (so they don't take up additional space when updated), and thus slimming down the system partition for use with Firerat's cMTD (with settings of 110 5 (110 for system, 5 for cache), so that the data partition is a whopping 320MB).
Problem is: After flashing my edited gapps.zip, I cannot install any additional applications (via Market downloading, via RootExplorer installing an apk I have on my SD card, etc.). What happens is the installation process starts, but then the phone immediately reboots and I'm stuck in a bootloop.
I have no idea what the problem would be. I was wondering if maybe somebody here knew?
I'm working on a better solution that doesn't require a customized gapps.zip file, but a solution that redirects the installation process. I would like to know if there is a specific app that is causing the odd bootloop so that I don't include it in future versions.
Thanks!
~Ennon
Nobody can take a look at this and suggest what may be wrong?
Alright whatever, I figured it out.
The end result is Ennon's FSO for Gapps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=854459

CM9.... What did I do???

I have a question for some of you. I had been doing some research on CM9 for NC. I found a download, ( Though not on this site) along with some additional help from this website.
I installed everything to my NC and low and behold, it all works!! It looks just like my Toshiba Thrive tablet, except it's showing that its running Android 4.0 version.
Now for the drawbacks.... it has NO sound, NO Market, etc... Is there any way to install those? Or has this been the problem all along??
Thanks!
What links you got the CM9 from?
I got CM9 running with sound and market is working just fine.
I knew better than to trust another site, but ... I went to androidfamily.net. It had a "how to" to install CM9 ...
Could you give me downloads you used?
Thanks alot!!!
Check out the Samiam nightly builds in the development forum.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1444943
You basically need to flash three files that are available from there. Latest nightly main CM9 ROM, Google Apps (Gapps) and the telephony-permissions fix.
That will give you market, working sound and best CM9 for Nook at the moment.

I see the Gapps file, and the telephony-permissions fix file, but where is the CM9 main file you mentioned? Am I overlooking it?
I tried again, using the same CM9 file, and then installed the Gapps file you mentioned along with the telephony permissions fix. Still no market. Everything else worked fine!

So do I just download the link that has today's date by it?? That's what I did, and no market. I went back re-read everything, and then downloaded everything all over again, and again... No Market. Everything else is working fine.
Are you connected to wifi? When loading a new rom, sometimes the market doesn't show up until hooked up to wife.
If this doesn't solve your problem, then I would start from scratch. Can you boot into CM recovery? If so, go into mounts and storage and format data, system and cache. Back into main screen and factory reset and wipe cache partition. (so many debates on if this is all totally necessary, but I have had glitches with installs when I have not done every one of these steps in this order).
Install CM9 (I do recommend samiam's build. It works flawlessly on my nook.)
Choose reboot option in recovery. Connect to a wireless network.
Samiam has included Rom Manager in his build. I use this to boot into recovery. Install Sam's gapps, telephony fix and boot animation fix. Reboot.
Hope this helps. Post if you need more detailed instructions.
I don't think you are flashing the right ones or are missing one of the 3. There is a patch that fixes market, boot animation and SOD issues. In unofficial cm9 forum.

I am getting a little confused. When I clicked on the CM9 build....it shows parent directory and then all the nightlies. Which one do I use? I also tried to just wipe it and reinstall CM7... I did manage to get the market running the CM7. So, I think I must have just downloaded the wrong nightly??

You can click on the latest one (Jan. 28.) and download. I always check the end of samiam's thread to see if there are any hiccups on the latest builds. I am running Jan.26 build (haven't updated yet) and it is running beautifully for me.

I have tried everything! and still no market! I believe I'm doing everything correctly, because I downloaded CM7 again, and had the market.
Is there anyone out there with the same type problem that corrected it?
Thanks!
From Recovery you want to format cache and system (under mounts). Also format data unless you already have a good working set up and you want to preserve all your settings, apps etc.
Then you should be flashing 3 zips in this order
update-encore-2012xxxx.zip where xxxx is the latest
gapps-ics-4.0.3-sam-noinit.zip from the misc folder
telephony-permission-fix.zip from the misc folder
The gapps zip in particular has the google apps including the market. Note that if you are comparing with the CM7 MiRaGe ROM then that has the gapps in including the market already in whereas with CM9 you have to flash them in separately.
If you have formatted data then when you reboot it should take you straight into a setup where you set up wifi, then sign in to your google account. The market app then should work OK.

Went to CWM and did the above ..went to mounts and storage..format cache and system, and data. After I did this, I hit the power button, once to go back to the screen to install the zips. Now, when I hit that power button, the following message came up 4 times... E: can't mount/cache/recovery.log. Could this have something to do with it??
I tried your instructions again, and No Market. You said that it would take me to a screen to set up wi fi ..but it doesn't. My screen is black, with a clock, a picture of a camera, and box that says gallery.
I am just going to have to go back to CM7!
I think I finally thought it out. For whatever reason when I put the gapp file in my NC it shows installing..but I don't think it worked. CM7...No problems! Have installed twice today and both times had the Market.
CM9... runs great...but no market!
Strange. The only thing that I can think of at the moment is that you have a bad download of the gapps file.
If you haven't tried it before then I'd suggest downloading it again. You should then just be able to flash that one on its own.
---------- Post added at 05:39 PM ---------- Previous post was at 05:34 PM ----------
As a double check the zip should be 16,874,937 and you should be able to open it on PC and see the apps files in the system/app folder with vending.apk

I checked, and BTW I'm using gapps-ics-4.0.3 -sam noinit ......my download is 18,275 KB ? and when I clicked on it to check the apps files as you suggested this is what it showed... 3 folder icons with MACOSX, META-INF, system. And then directly underneath the folders were 3 other things with the same words as the top 3 ... NO vending.apk ?? I clicked on the one that had system, and all the apps are there. I just don't know what I'm doing wrong.
Would you tell me which gapp file your using?
Thanks for helping me!!!
I go the Gapps I use from the link
http://sphsolutions.net/android/Encore/Nightlies/Misc/
However, it looks like I got a slightly earlier one (probably 1 day before). I retrieved the current one to compare them. The later one has the YouTube app in which explains the difference in size. All the Google apps are exactly the same as in the one I use and the Vending app is there as well under system/app
If you can't see that folder then there is something wrong with your zip download.
The other difference from the earlier one I had is that it looks like the later one had been put together on a Mac system as it has the extra __MACOSX folder and a few .DS_Store folders which are not really part of the required zip but should be harmless.
Just to check I just tried installing with the latest nightly 20120128 and the later gapps version and I got the market OK.
So two thoughts: either your download is still bad or maybe you have signature verification turned on in your clockwork and that is causing this gapps install to fail whereas the main ROM is passing and also the gapps when you do CM7. I have signature verification disabled (which I think is the default). Try toggling the signature verification menu item and get it set to disabled.
What and where is the signature verification? And..... how do I get there?

Reporting Bugs
You are allowed to report bugs only in this thread. Before reporting a bug, please make sure you are running as stock as possible. This means no custom kernel, no custom framework modification, etc. If you are using any of the above modifications, please flash the rom again to get rid of the modifications before reporting.
REPORT BUGS IN THIS THREAD ONLY
Grab a logcat right after the problem has occurred. (Please include at least a few pages of the log, not just the last few lines, unless you know what you're doing.)
If it is a random reboot, grab /proc/last_kmsg. (Do not bother getting a logcat unless you can get it just before the reboot. A logcat after a reboot is useless)
Remember to provide as much info as possible. The more info you provide, the more likely that the bug will be solved. The following is a useful format to follow. Note: If you can provide the latest night/build that the bug didn't exist, it would greatly help in tracking down what caused it.

Will fixing the permissions fix it all?
@PaWipt. I have the encryption unsuccessful bug on phone and my internal sdcard is unusable. In 4.2.2 I switched the vold.Fstab to boot from external sdcard. Is it possible to switch sdcards in 4.3. There is no vold anymore supposedly its only in kernel now, is it at all possible to use 4.3 on my phone.

Unfortunately, you'll have to compile your own kernel with the edited fstab.

Important information about repartitioning
The next nightly will repartition /system to be 600 MB (from the previous 400 MB) to fit the ever enlarging Android system. The repartition process is automatic, but you will lose your /data. When flashing, the first installation will fail with a warning that your /data will be wiped, simply select the .zip again and the install will proceed. If you've backed up your phone before installation (which you should), you may restore /data from backup (using "Advanced Restore" option in CWM) with no ill effect.
So does the nightly for 8/16 fix the Focal crash issues? I saw the changelog had a lot of code cleanup so not sure...I might check it out later today but in the meantime if anyone knows

Alrighty!
Did a clean flash and it still does the same thing...focal closes when trying to switch to any other mode (i.e. panorama, video camera, picsphere). I can take on or two regular pics without it closing. Browsing and changing settings is no issue.
Otherwise, system run super smooth, apps install and run with no issue. No fc or random reboots (yet )

I'm on cm7. I can't change kernel to stock now i was on percy cm7 base. Flashed bieltv kernel and then Flashed new experience (bieltv rc4 base) . Going to stock doesn't help
The 492 error on Play Store is a bug of the kernel.
To fix it, flash the kernel first before flashing the ROM, not the other way round.
it has nothing to do with Bieltv kernel - I use his rom and kernel and I have bout 8 different accounts all loaded into gmail at the same time
you can follow my instructions in the cm7 thread for correct install of the rom to avoid the data partition not being mountable which will stop you installing anything
492 error can normally be solved with the following (as long as you can mount data partition in cwm)
wipe cash
wipe dalvik cash
with root browser delete .android_secure

[GUIDE] To get OTA updates for CM12 Nightlys

Since nightly builds happen daily, it is difficult to download 250MB+ data daily and flash it manually. And also updater won't show any updates most of the time. The solution is to use CyanDelta.
Install this app from playstore. Then follow the given instructions. Updates will be around 15MB only. Check for updates daily.
About the App:
http://www.cyandelta.com/
Download from here:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...ult#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5jeWFuZGVsdGEiXQ.
Steps to be followed:
1. Download CM12 nightly (skip if already downloaded). Keep it in internal storage.
2. Download "Cyandelta" app from playstore using link given above.
3. Now open the Cyandelta app and load the zip (you will see this option when you enter inside the app)
4. Now when it prompts for delete gives "yes"(its has already taken a note of the contents of the zip so no need to worry)
5. Now it will show an update if your connected to your internet. Give app permission to flash it. It will take care of flashing and wiping the cache.
6. Do it whenever you want update to the latest nightly.
Here is the Video for the tutorial to get updates: (Thanks to Deep Singhal)
