Root & wifi-calling - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, is it possible to root Defy w/o killing wifi-calling? Know this has been discussed but cannot seem to find a definitive answer. Thanks.

I don't think the problem is 'rooting'. There were some attempts to bring the t-mobile wifi calling to custom rom's. But there is no Defy developer living in America...
So you can only have it on the T-mobile sbf. Rooting shouldn't be an issue.

Not sure if I understand the question but I'm using CM9 (and of course I'm rooted) and I'm using Viber for wifi-calling and is working flawlessly. Cheers!

Thanks for the replies. Wifi-calling accesses the provider's cell network via wifi. It's similar to UMA, though does not allow hand-off. The t-mo USA Defy version of 2.1 and 2.2.1 comes with the app pre-installed. Relativey few carriers currently support it (which is a main reason I'm with t-mo, essentially free calls when overseas etc.). So, I don't want to lose it by changing ROMs.

So now we have ClockWork working - Who's gonna try a 1.2-1.4Ghz Kernel :P

Question had to be asked!
Excited to see how quickly the custom ROM scene takes off for the tab now!

I ask because I saw 2 other threads of people trying it (Will try to find them) but wanted to make sure they had CWM before they really put things to work with the custom ROM.
More than anything, wanted this to be a discussion thread for system tweaks etc now that the tMo version is available, it won't be long for others to follow.
I believe koush posted a vid on youtube of cwm running on the tab.

Clockworks only works on bone stock tmobile tabs which is unfortunate for me since i need the euro firmware to make calls. I probably would flash a new kernel if tho. Waiting to see if anyone is brave enough to do it.

I'm using it on a tmo tab with JMA and Koush's kernel fixes the bluetooth mic bug for me.
If it's anything like the phones, flashing kernels shouldn't be an issue. If it messes up you can always go back via nandroid. If we can cook up some kernels that promote underclocking/undervolting we could start looking at better battery life for our devices.
From my experience with the phone area flashing radios is where the bricking occurs because of the bootloaders. Never flash the same radio twice. Also you should never flash just for the hell of it because of the riskyness of it.
I think now that we have nandroid cooking up roms should easy.

What's the bluetooth mic bug? (Searched on this term, and it only returned this thread!).
Regards,
Dave
i think its an issue with the NA tabs that prohibit the use of bluetooth microphone. maybe just another level of security to prevent convenient use of the phone
The N1 has a similar CPU and generally only gets to around 1.15Ghz, a _few_ will manage 1.2 in a stable fashion. I wouldn't expect the tab to get much beyond that.
I'm actually more interested in being able to UNDERclock the CPU, doing so on my N1 improves the battery life significantly.
The addition of the On-Demand governer would be beneficial as currently the SGT is stuck on the Conservative governer. I believe with the N1 kernel this is a compile-time option so with any luck it's as simple on the SGT.
Im pretty sure 1.4 will be possible but maybe not completely stable. I know some have gotten 1.3 stable on the galaxy s phones so it should be feasible.

Actually, the mic works fine on a cellular call. Its the VOIP calls from SipDroid, CSipSimple or Skype that has the microphone problem.

Well, in Skypes case it simply doesn't support Bluetooth on the Android client.

im on sprint cdma, but i used some common sense to get free incoming/outgoing but of course so far ONLY voip thru csipsimple and sipdroid...im still testing them both(i prefer csipsimple ui) but it works very reliably...i test using my evo & my fiances hero to call my tab.only sipdroid lets me use my bt headset i use for media though. to get this to work you just need mobile data and/or wifi. i presume the bug is only related to gsm models.
bump....bump...bump it up!

Ginger and Wifi Calling?

I have looked through the roms posting, though not every post but a search, and don't see any mention of WIFI Calling in any of the ginger roms with GPS. Is anyone working on or has worked on a hybrid WC from a vibrant and SGS4G. This is the only thing keeping me from moving to ginger.
Thanks
WiFi Calling has only recently been successfully (?) ported to the version 2.2.1 (I haven't tested this myself) roms, so it will probably be a while as most efforts seem to be getting gps working!

you can do this and try for GB wificalling...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1069088
i tried and gets stuck on enabling....
the link above is broke.
Also the 2.2.1 did not work properly. you could only make calls via wifi calling and non via cell tower. Data worked fine, but calls would never dial. So in essence you had a VOIP phone 24/7.

What 2.2.1 rom has it installed from the get go? or is it an add on for all 2.2.1 roms?

This works great on any JVP GB rom like SGSII Hybrid.

working wifi-calling on froyo 2.2.1 HTC Dream G1

I made it work wifi-calling on rom Froyo by Laszlo 2.2.1 and work
I leave the update for that use HTC Dream G1 T-mobile U.S with Froyo by Laszlo 2.2.1
Warning I am not responsible if this affects your current rom or otherwise cause damage to your phone
for those who have the rom Froyo by Laszlo 2.2.1 reboot in recovery make a backup and flashing the Htc-G1-wifi-calling-for-froyo-2.2.1-signed.zip
to try another rom 2.2.1 delete biuld.prop from the Htc-G1-wifi-calling-for-froyo-2.2.1-signed and replace it with the rom build.prop to try and add this to the build.prop

Since laszlo is based on cm6 would this also work on a cm6 ROM? I am running the last cm6 nightly which I like a lot.

might work would only be build.prop remove and replace it with the CM6 and add the necessary information to the rom build.prop CM6. and remember the wifi-calling is only for T-mobile user
Wow, thanks a million! I was desperate to get wifi calling on my G1 because I live in a half-basement apartment, so my signal is pretty much useless. I switched to Froyo by Lazlo from straight CM6 because the latter was being laggy anyway. That took some doing, but once I got that all straightened out, I flashed your zip, opened up the app, and flipped the switch. Bam! Wifi calling!
I don't know who is behind building this, but thanks for pointing me to it and recommending Froyo/Lazlo. You made my night.

I am running tmo so I will give it a shot eventually. I have 3 of these G1s that I play with and usually only keep one running at a time due to my "improvements".

Testing this now. I hope this work. It will help me TONS!
This is the best thing to happen to my G1 since I put Lazso on it. You have done a Great Job with this !!!!!
I have used this all day long on 10 calls and everyone has said the calls are clear. Also it works great with my bluetooth!!!!
I am sending this link to everyone I know that has a G1.
NOTE: if this thread was in the developement it would get alot more exposure!!!
thanks
Thank you for this. Works almost perfectly, but theres one problem.
After flashing this it causes roaming and 3g not to work.
I go to wireless settings>mobile networks>Network operators
Then get error searching for network.
Flashing laszlo 5.2 fixes the problem, but then wifi calling doesnt work.
Can someone help me? I really want wifi calling and being able to search for networks to work.
Anyone else get this to work with other roms? It causes the wifi to stop working on any other rom besides laszlo.

what rom can we use for 3g version ?

Hi there m8´s...
I have now edited this and added the answers to my questions...
Btw:
I have the 3G device...
And I am not using 3G or gsm at all...
Question:
Can i then without any problem use the "WiFi only" roms ??
Answer:
Yes, you can use the roms and kernals for the WiFi model (7510) on your 3g device (7500)...
You WILL loose 3g and gsm in the process...
- at least until you flash a 7500 kernal and ROM again...
Question:
Do i have to use the 3G versions for my device ??
Answer:
Only IF you use 3g or gsm, if not then go ahead and flash WiFi only on your device...
I think it should work.
I have seen a guy who accidentally (from my impressions) applied 3g only rom/kernel and that disabled 3g but i think the rest was ok.
I whould give it a try - if you have problems you can go back to the stock rom.
NEVER EVER take advise from people who just "think" they know. They are just guessing and really have no idea.
It is not recommend to flash any 3rd party ROM onto the Galaxy Tab 10. None of them are as stable or reliable as the stock ROM. It is recommended to avoid them.

Do as he says, never take his advise cause he thinks he knows something.
If you not caring about 3G support, I recommend checking out Tasks ROM, the last 5-6 pages talk about exactly what your looking for.

See the last few pages of that thread. ROM is running GREAT on my 3G tab, and is overclocked with pershoot kernel. Just follow my instructions exactly and be sure to flash the proper kernel if you wanna overclock!
You WILL lose3G though.

If you're not using 3G, flashing the wifi only roms should work for you.
And I say thats no problem. You can simply use it without being afraid.
Just gonna lose 3G ability.
I have now a WiFi only rom in my 3G device, and it is working great...
NO PROBLEMS AT ALL...
And now i also use the 1.4ghz 7510 kernal...

Tethering on Stock Pie

Just bought the PH1, should arrive this afternoon. I had read that tethering worked by default on stock Oreo; is the same true for the Pie update?
I want to try stock for a while before rooting, but I need tethering.
Yes, with or without root... But your carrier may be able to block it at source.

Answer is correct and also if you have root you can bypass the restrictions of your carrier.
Yep, my provider is straight talk, using an at&t sim card. I've used it 2-3 times w/o problems
Alright. Thanks for responding! I've had a ton of phones, and so far the Essential forum seems to have the nicest group of people =)
I've used it on StraighTalk with Verizon sim without issue, non root.
