Cm7 our sense or senseless - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay so I'm debating which to use and started wondering if you guys can make a recommendation on the variables I want in a ROM
Variables:
1: Battery life equivalent our better than cm7 because I am super heavy user and make adjustments that let my phone last all day
2: speed/smooth this one I figure is a given since most roms I come past are fairly quick and smooth
3: space need room for apps specifically games
4: fully functional but easily accessed settings/ functions I like sense for this reason but Rosie uses so much battery power
thanks all for any help our recommendations

I meant to edit this post and ended up hitting quote. What a douche. See below
:eyeroll:

I'm using Android Revolution HD right now. Its large because its sense, but a partition on the sd card and a healthy debloat frees up a lot of space.
If you're worried about sense "using battery" or just don't want the look, install launcher pro or gingerbread launcher. Both are small and efficient. After install freeze or uninstall rosie and you'll have the best of both worlds.
Also, RCMix tweaks will add a lot of customization options.
When it eventually starts to slow down wipe cache a dalvik cache and your phone will quicken noticeably. Gotta take out the garbage.
Lastly, use oc/uv beater 2 v1.7 to control cpu. I recommend SavagedZen, virtuous or Smartass v2 governor with unity v10 kernel. Keep in mind that if you are a heavy user OC'ing kills battery. I keep mine in the 1ghz range.

Cm is what you need. You can also try tdj's cm kang.

What setup have you ended up with ?

I'm very curious as to what other people are now using as their default ROM on the Sprint Hero...I've got a feeling that ROM development is slowing down, and will probably move to the EVO (I'm way off an upgrade)
I've been through (almost) every ROM I think, and I've ended up with the following setup which is nice and speedy.
Kernel = 2.6.29-G0DmOdE-OC
Build = fresh toast v2 beta 2
I tried enabling jit, but was getting worse fps results on neocore than with jit disabled.
I'm running Launcher Pro, and everything feels really good.
DarchDroid 2.6.4 stock.
Loving the 20 hour battery life on it.

Same as you. However, I know flipz got the evo so I only expect maybe one more update to fresh rom. Only problem I have is that if I don't reboot the phone for a couple of days the phone app will crash when someone calls. I just reboot my phone every other day so it isn't a problem but I will probably be switching to a different rom as soon as I figure out who is sticking around and still developing... or maybe I will figure out how to cook my own rom since I will have more free time on my hands.
FreshToast as the daily, w/ any Darchdroid latest release as backup.
SetCPU 729/692

No issues, above average battery life, minimal lag.

ZenEXP with GodMode. My own mods and theme. Speed is great, though I get horrible lag sometimes as with any ROM. It's just the nature of the Hero.
I too settled at ZenEXP. Sense is fun again and modes and multiple themes makes it customizable without dedicating a theme by flashing it.
Second choice, and may reflash one day would definitely be Darchdroid. That Rom is amazing with all the work put into it. It's crazy fast and looks hawt.

I run regawmod on a daily basis, his latest themed version. Runs clean, lasts a good while on the battery and I like the theme work
I'm now running DarchDroid 2.6.4, the only OC'd ROM that will run on my phone (not that I want any other ROM, as I hate Sense UI with a burning passion).
I just got the Hero not long ago. It's my first Android phone so I'm stuck with it for a while. I'm interested in possibly making a rom. Looking over some of the guides right now. So whatever I do I'll be sure to post it to xda. Right now I I have 2.1 rooted.

[Q] Few questions on set up. (coming from nexus one)

Since I am new to the MT4G and sense ROMs, I have a few questions.
What is the CPU freq most everyone is using for day to day. I have mine set at 1.4ghz as 1.7 seems too much.
I am running the latest Iced Glacier ROM. What was the bloatware removed? There is still a lot in this ROM I do not use. (like stocks, setup and myfaves) What is safe to remove?
This ROM seems huge to me.... its over 200mb! even the most bloated Nexus ROM I used barely reached 100mb.
Is there any home replacement that will allow the sense widgets? ADW EX will not. Seems that the widgets would be framework based and not launcher based.
Trackpad wake, is that a root feature or did the stock ROM allow that as well?
I literally had my phone for less than an hour before it was rooted, and that includes the 30 min drive from the UPS center. So the differences between the stock software and the modified are lost on me.
Any tips to working with sense better? It has a lot of nice convenience and flash compared to vanilla android. I figured if I am going to use a sense ROM may as well use it to its potential. If I don't I may as well go with CyanogenMOD. (CM7 on the nexus was nice btw, I think I liked the new stock android keyboard the best of all I have used including swype)
Any custom kernels that work better than the one in Iced Glacier? (give reasons why) I need good battery life, so anything reasonable that helps is great. I am not on it constantly and eating battery, but signal is spotty at work; who knew carbon fiber was such a good RF blocker...
I think that is all for now... I am off to bed. 12 hour work days 7 days a week can get to you. (another reason I'm asking questions outright rather than extensive searching on the forum)
Anybody?...
For one, the rom is so big because it's a sense rom. Track pad wake works out the gate. Theres no home replacement that you can use sense widgets with

Depends on your personal hardware. I run mine at 1.8 on the smaetass kernel with no problems, but some can't do that.
I am running the latest Iced Glacier ROM. What was the bloatware removed? There is still a lot in this ROM I do not use. (like stocks, setup and myfaves) What is safe to remove?
Stocks (and widget), myfaves (and Widgets), twitter widget, flicker, and a few others.

It is huge compared to an aosp rom like was on the Nexus, but that's because of all the stuff added with HTC sense.
Is there any home replacement that will allow the sense widgets? ADW EX will not. Seems that the widgets would be framework based and not launcher based.
No, sadly there isn't. The sense Widgets are so deeply integrated with the rest of the launcher that such is not possible. However, it is possible to find some Widgets that do similar things.
Trackpad wake, is that a root feature or did the stock ROM allow that as well?
That was on stock as well, and most custom roms will incorporate this highly popular feature.
I literally had my phone for less than an hour before it was rooted, and that includes the 30 min drive from the UPS center. So the differences between the stock software and the modified are lost on me.

Well, the best thing I can say on this is to not expect it to be like aosp. That's the point of being sense, its unique in its look. It just wont always be the fastest on the block.

Not really sure how to answer this question, really. Grankin has a few good kernels for iced glacier that can bring the speed up to 1.7 Guzman, and the smartass governor built into dumfuq's kernel (built for cm, but has since been modded to be compatible with sense roms like iced) enables it to get better speed and battery life.
I think that is all for now... I am off to bed. 12 hour work days 7 days a week can get to you. (another reason I'm asking questions outright rather than extensive searching on the forum)

Thanks I will do that. I will get it down sometime, just different than what I am used to.
BTW which smartass kernal should I use? I'm assuming the cm6 version.
Yup... But you have to use fastboot to get it to work right.

Yeah, but speaking as a user of said kernel (albeit on cm7), it's worth it.

EDIT: also, I dont think I mentioned this previously, but the default setup for the cm6 kernel will break wi-fi on sense ROMs, so be sure to set up the wi-fi fix that he added today.
I am currently on ice glacier also but I really like eVil's Desire ROMs. there's a Z and HD flavor. they are more full on stock sense experience than iced which is a more/less clone of espresso.
I personally prefer the stock sense to espresso...there's more HTC Widgets and some other cool stuff. I also really like the trackpad unlock in addition to wake which is built in on those as well. the only thing I REALLY miss on those ROMs is the espresso dialer which has the built in VIP calls (allows a VIP contact to ring even with ringer / sound off).
I haven't tried gorillas DHD sense port yet but prob will in a couple days.
and before you ask - the difference between the Z and HD ROMs is Z has a landscape rotating home screen and larger fonts by default and HD doesnt have the homescreen rotation and has a smaller font. they're about identical as far as I can tell aside from that. I had no real problems on 0.2.x versions of Z and HD but eVil just released 0.3 and it seems a couple ppl are complaining of a quirk here and there..btw both of those eVil ROMs have a 1.49ghz kernel with built in smartass scaling which I really like.
I'm currently oc'ed to 1.2 max on iced 1.1.6 to try and maximize battery.

[Q] Favorite rom? and why?

For me thus far it's a tossup between gingervillain and virtuous, I love the sense feel and style but I can tell the strain it puts on my g2 when compared to running gingervillain. If i could get the htc widgets and skins on gingervillain with go launcher as the "stock" launcher i think i'd be set. all in all though my vote is:
gingervillain.
p.s: thanks to the douche team for all they have made possible.
Cm7 + ULV kernel hands down. I <3 speed + 12 hours battery life heavy usage.

CM7 nightlies have been awesome for me so far. Of course I did love CM6 too but these nightlies are very very stable and I'm loving the 2.3 goodness.
Enomthers TheOffical. I can't stand sense so as soon as I got my DesireZ I wanted stock, plus I love all the spare parts options I get to play with the phone even more!
Delivered by Western Union in the rain after 70 Years
CM7 Nightlys cause its stable and smooth and i got 2 days with light usage with mugen 1800mah and 1 day with middle to heavy usage still waiting for the official rc1 from cyanogen.

CM7 nightly. Stock with no fuss and all the options I feel should have been available in the first place.
MIUI
Hands down MIUI wins
heck, even CM needed their help with thier FM radio
Its fast, its stabler now (1.2.4)
and battery just lasts longer with it, not to mention, better perfomance
I like its easy editing mode.
I like the dock that stays there and how it manages its screens.
I love that is has built features, other roms need apps to do
Wireless Sync Ready, Wireless Thether, ready ect ect
has some battery saving modes that really do help
Better theme management
Built it Back up app which backs up your system settings, texts. call, address. and apps
Simple setting guide with tabs in the button
I get around 12 hours with stock battery (with 3 hours of internet) and calls/texts
CM is good and all but just seems like a typical stock with a few added twicks to it
I have tried all of the G2 ROMs except for the ugly new ones. I would love to take features from all of them and put them all into one ROM, however I think MIUI wins because it is so very customizable and it's only getting started, although new releases are delayed because they need to be translated into English. With this being said I would love to take features from all of them and put them all into one ultimate ROM. However I am not a developer, and I would have no idea where to start.
I use the 1.85 stock rom, not because I like the HTC sense UI but becouse I find useful a couple of thinks, mainly the USB menu that can be defaulted to anithyng, and the HTC email app.
Also Gingerbread looks ugly on the DZ (unlike on the milestone I used for a whole year) because the UI is mainly black, and the black of the DZ's screen is so poor, so greysh.
My favorite so far is the CyanogenMod 7 nightlies. Amazingly stable for something that isn't even labeled a beta, has only the basics out of the box, and great battery life (even better with Pershoot's kernel). A big seller for me is the fact that I could customize the autobrightness levels which makes my phone much more usable in the typically dim environments I use it in, a feature which is also in CyanogenMod 6 (if not earlier versions, too). I also like ADW.Launcher so its inclusion by default in CM works out great for me. Gingerbread's simplified, higher-contrast, and more subdued UI scheme is leaps and bounds above previous Android versions once you get used to it, IMNSHO. Basically, it just makes using my phone more pleasant on a day to day basis and there's not much more I could ask for in a phone's OS.
Well I like my Virtuous 0.9.
It's pretty stable and I like the sense look and feel. And Virtuous just adds the goodies to that as well as bugfixes and some basics for essential topics (like vpn etc)
Eventho I does not use an advanced kerlen I am right now at 30% after 15h inkluding 100% wifi on, 2h contigous browsing while on subway and sticking around a while in the xda app.
And for sure moderate usage of sms and phone.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Which Rom and Kernal do you guys think is best when it comes down to battery life?
using Virtuous 0.9.5 with the advanced kernel.
only thing is that all htc sense roms seems to be a little "laggy" ... when i first got my phone i thought those htc widgets are awesome (friendstream, news etc), but over the time i disabled them actually all - so i'm really thinking about switching to cm7 nightly builds.
only thing i'm concerned about are the missing security "features" sense provides (disable the phone, locate the phone etc etc)
GingerVillain for speed, CM6 for stability.

Opinions Wanted on Iced Glacier vs CM7

I currently run Iced Glacier, but am thinking about switching over to CM7.
I've read the pros and cons on CM7, but would like feedback from those that switched from IG to CM7, or switched to CM7 and went back to IG. Or those that just love IG/CM7 to death and wouldn't recommend anything else.
Please and thank you.

Both of those roms are great. It really comes down to if you want a MySense rom or something that is more of a straight vanilla Android with the CM extras. After you get used to CM7 it can be hard to go back to anything else, but it really depends on what you like.
My first suggestion would be to go to my EZ CwM 3.0.0.6 Install thread and install the latest recovery (3.0.0.6) and then from recovery make a Nandroid backup of your current rom. Then start flashing Roms till you find one you like.
I have been running the cm7 RC since it came out and I like it much more than iced glacier which was my previous rom. Everything from speed to functionality is an improvement. Just keep in mind that cm7 is still in the experimental mode and iced glacier is a stable rom so you have to be patient as cyanogen continues to make improvements.

I do currently roll .6 so I have the ability to go back and forth between 2.2 and 2.3 (or so that's what it tells me it's capable of).
i continue to keep flashing between these two roms because i just cant decide which one i like more...they both have the pluses and minuses but even those are very minor and are personal likes/dislikes...such as maybe a button location or theming...all which can be solved by 3rd party means
both run really well...i think cm7 runs better out of the box while IG runs better when you've flashed another kernel like Faux's latest...cm7 is also nice to not have the need to run a 3rd party app to control OC'ing IMO
i keep going back to IG cause it seems it fits the "look" i want more so than cm7 currently...it also feels a bit more natural than cm7...but at the same time i love messing with cm7 to learn gingerbread and learn whats to come for our phones
i think once cm7 hits RC2 or its full stable release ill switch to it full time when i can get a nice theme for it and get it looking and feeling the way i want
honestly you cant go wrong with either rom...if you want sense and good rom thats feels like the stock rom with all the bells and whistles of what roms add...go IG...if you want the latest and greatest that runs like a champ out of the box and is nice and simple AOSP but with a ton of features on the back end...go cm7
I also went from iced to cm7, used it for 3 hours before restoring back to iced. I'm so used to the sense UI that I love it. The contact lists is so much easier to use with dialing numbers on the pad to get that contact you want even though you could use the app dialer one to get the same features on cm7.
I don't know what else it is but I'm sticking to iced (sense) until atleast cm7 becomes stable.

I switched from IG to CM7 at some point in January and have not returned. CM7 was my first CM, and there are things about it that keep me there. Many things....here's what comes immediately to mind:
Usability improvements:
Notification widgets allow me to have six toggles of my choosing on the notification bar.
Rotary unlock gesture so much clearer, obvious, easier, and less "oops" prone than the Sense downward gesture to unlock/answer.
Lockscreen functionality out the wazoo, twelve ways from Sunday to configure and use.
CPU clocking management for performance/battery built-in, no SetCPU or CPU Tuner needed
Mass storage on/off when USB connected easier to manage than in Sense
Things I like as well, but haven't yet used:
OpenVPN client
Preferred apps (granted, you could do this on any ROM):
Built in ADW Launcher over Sense's launcher, whatever it is called
Google Voice Search over Genius Button
Google Car Home over Car Dock
IG is the Stock ROM with performance improvements and some -- some, but not all -- bloatware removed, and some prettiness added, like a transparent notification bar with a cute logo. It's very nice. But I prefer CM.
When I flashed it the RC was the latest version out that's really the only reason.

Before you read this, it only contains my opinions. Don't get mad at me for them.
I really love Iced Glacier. It has a better integration of features (Facebook, Visual Voicemail, Twitter). But CM 7 is just all around cleaner. Sense is bogged down with a lot of nonsense (haha! funny pun!). The launcher and widgets take up way too much memory. LaucherPro is faster and more customizable with much less size and memory consumption. CM7's lockscreen is better. And CM7 has volume button track change. And camera button track pause/play. This is clutch for me! I can't go back to IG because of this. I got better battery life and performance from IG, but CM7 has all the extras I need.
I currently run iced glacier 1.1.6
Everything works flawlessly. Its so fast and smooth. I have a G2 running CM 6.1.1 and its stable and perfection.
If CM on the mytouch runs a bit more stable I would throw it on.

This is simply a vanilla android vs sense question. I like sense so I stick with Iced Glacier. I find vanilla android, well, vanilla, kinda boring and less useful for the way I use my phone. This is no knock on cm it's just my personal preference.

I'm just curious cause I was having some issues that no one else is seeming to have while running IG...such as contacts problems, visual voicemail having to be re-set up every time I restart, internet crashing at times...
So I was just curious on how people felt on each, and what their experiences were like.

Best Rom! (Include Screenshots of any kind)

I NEED to find the best ROM out there for the G2/Desire Z! let me know what you think it is!!
-Post what rom it is.. INCLUDING Build Number
-Explain why it is the best!
-Post a screenshot of your favorite screen i.e wallpaper..favorite widget etc..
If you could, let me know how good battery life is and stability!
-Looking for an everyday rom.. if possible
-Thanks!
I've tested several ROMs on my DZ and now I use Vision Unity.
It's basicly a 2.1/3.0 Sense hybrid ROM giving you real eye-candy.
In the latest version (1.29.0) I found some bugs/disadvantages:
- the homescreen does not rotate on keyboard open
- sometimes it lags a bit
- it takes about 300 MB ram after start, leaving you just about 70MB free (other roms are much better in this criteria)
- I experienced already few times sudden phone restart (phone just lying on table, no aggresive apps run like 3d games etc, and after few hours I take the phone and it asks for PIN) = pretty critical if you wait for an important call.
but among the roms I've tried, this seems far the best if you decide to have HTC Sense. If you can miss sense, stick to CM7, there are really cool features like finetuning the display auto brightness intensity levels (really killer feature to battery life!)
I enjoy Virtuous Sense 2.0.0 because I find it to be consistently fast and responsive, everything works for me all the time, and I still have enough ram to run a couple of apps in the background, unlike every sense 3.0 rom/hybrid I've tried.
Highly highly recommended.

LMFAO.
Cyanogen MOD 7 RC 1 or if your so inclined, nightly build #156.
- So far after testing a few ROM I've been back to CM7. Why? Once installed and running and even with keep all my favourite apps open and running in the background, I still manage to keep about 80mb of ram and CPU usage is usually between 2% and 82% with an average of 4 or 5 programs running. Ok a bit excessive I know but it still works.
I have custom memory script running that's available here on XDA and various other gadget. Battery life is usually fairly consistent with 1day 9hours of use. I use the device quite a bit in a day.
Power saving options: Brightness is set to 20% only, Juice Defender installed.
Running background application is limited to my email mostly unless I'm doing some work. Most of the time email, exchange, Facebook and twitter are sync.
I'm using Launcher Pro with the license for my main interface. Here are some screen captures for your pleasure.

Personally, my favorite ROM is MIUI.us
The stock Music app in it, is my favorite music app by far, I especially love how it not only gets the lyrics, but also scrolls them karaoke style with the song. It also has a nice theming system, and a great built in theme. Everything overall looks nicer than stock Android.
Another great thing about it is the status bar, you can enable/disable USB Mass Storage using an on/off slider in the notifications, and I love the way the switches work in the status bar.
Then there's the stock Launcher, which is much nicer than the stock Android launcher in my opinion, though I still replace it with Go Launcher, again, my personal favorite.
If you're looking for a responsive, nice looking, and user friendly ROM, MIUI.us would be my suggestion. It also has a nice backup feature with their servers. You just need to make an MIUI account. Not sure if it's still necessary, but back when I did it, I had to go to the chinese MIUI website and use Google Translate to make my account <_<

The best rom is hardest to define because it's really up to personally preference. MIUI? Sure if you're into that whole thing, but frankly I have trust issues with Chinese tech companies for reasons that have been in the news here and there.
Cyanogenmod is a great AOSP rom even though it's not 100% AOSP it's quick, intuitive, and has lots of options that would allow you to customize it as you want.
There are other roms such as OTA roms that have been made that are also very quick, but not quite as intuitive and they are not as easily customized as some other roms.
Now we get into Sense. There are ports of great roms from other devices that may have a minor bug here and there. Unity is a great rom but I know it needs work on it simply because of little bugs here and there, lack of ram of the Vision, and the battery drain of 1.31 is not so appealing. These roms do not perform as well as Sense roms made for the Desire Z, how ever you do not have some sense 3.0 features that make Sense so much more enjoyable to use.
I currently run Virtuous Sense v2.0.0 and it's a very quick rom, but it lacks the eye candy that we all would love with Unity. However what I love about the sense community is that there are many themes and many ways to enhance sense with add-ons here and there which I have done.
I want to clearly state that this is just my opinion and you should try out the roms for your self to get your own opinion and know your personal preference what appeals to one person is not always the same as the next.
Virtuous unity 1.31

Super cm7 is still my favorite. I keep trying other roms but I always come back to this one because it is super fast and clean. Mexdroid is pretty good to but it is too themed for me. I think they are working on a more stock version which could be pretty sweet.

Actually, I'm now running the "Virtuous Sense v2.0.0 :: Enhanced & Optimized Stock ROM (2.42.405.2)". I miss the Sense 3.0 features, but I can try to flash some available mods. Especially the brightness setting in the quick setting.
But it's a small tax for a stable ROM without restarts.
