B&N called me about installing CM7 - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am sorry if this has been posted before. I've searched everywhere. Friday night I get a call around midnight. I was using my NC with my bootable SD at the time. I didn't recognize the number, it wasn't local, so I let it go to voicemail. When I check it, I hear a man who says he's Barnes and Noble customer service and that he can see that I have installed Cyanogenmod and I have violated the terms of service, and, "would I please call him back so we can straighten this whole mess out?" First off, this was originally my wife's Nook. Registered to her. I want to know how in the he11 B&N got my phone number, and furthermore how the got MY cell number?! I feel like my privacy has been compromised. Has this happened to anyone else out there? I mean, Motorola has never called me for all of their devices that I've rooted. People on the Android Tablet Forum think I'm the victim of a joke by a friend. I assure everyone, it is not. My friends are clueless about rooting and CM7.

Sounds like a phishing scam to me. I strongly doubt B&N would have called you because
1) you never gave them your number
2) they have nothing to gain by calling you. if you screwed up your device, you just have to buy another.
3) there's no way for them to have discovered that you are using CM7 and
4) they're probably not calling people at midnight for any reason.

I'd say you're probably right marchingknight11. But I probably do need to find out where and how my info and privacy was compromised. I am also curious if this has happened to anyone else in Nook world.

i suggest installing PDroid and locking down your device so that it is not sharing your data with people.
there is no way B&N called you about this, like the other dude said...they only profit from people rooting and modding their devices...if we brick it we usually have to buy another one, or at least that is what they think.
I also would suggest googling the phone # and see what comes up about the #, or just call up B&N customer service and ask them if they would do such a thing

Firstly, I don't thin it's B&N since I don't believe any of them will spend time calling you at midnite.
Secondly, tell them if you've spent money out of your pocket purchasing a BMW then jump on it, rip it off, hammering it, ......, all of those are none of their business ........... as long as you do not ask them (BMW dealership or in your case, B&N) to pay for the fix.
Thirdly, since somehow you leaked your info, that is the dangerous part. How do they know your NC running CM7? Did you tell any of your friend? Did you provide yr phone on the web?

What was the number that called you? Post it here or do a reverse phone look up. Did you created the bootable sd yourself? Where did you download the rom from?

wow thats pretty creepy! Ive never heard anything like that before, maybe Google collected info from your device and told Barnes & nobles, when i go to the android marketplace on my p.c it even says "listed devices" Nookcolor so maybe google did something? hmmm

He's saying that it's highly unlikely that it was a legitimate phone call.

Aside from the point that B&N would be highly unlikely to do anything like this at all, B&N would quite clearly never make a customer service call of any sort between 10pm at night and 8am in the morning.unless it was at the request of a customer.
This is a phishing scam from someone too amateur to realize that they got their time zone conversion to the US wrong. The bait website collected the user identification info used to tailor websites to different devices, and somehow the phone number was obtained ~ whether its available or the OP was conned into entering it ~ and then the number was called. A request for login passwords or credit card details is likely not be very down the script for however many fall for the scam.

I work in Barnes & Noble.
They don't care about your rooted/modded Nook. At all.
Everyone there loves my tabletified Nook Color and I even installed CM7 on a manager's NC.
If you use your Nook as intended but also root it, B&N potentially makes more money off of you since you'll miss out on Nook-specific deals.

Ok, upgrade "B&N is highly unlikely to do anything like this at all", to "B&N is certainly not going to do anything like this."
Like I said, it looks very much like a phishing scam, since it requires only three pieces of information to run ~ phone #, device name, and OS name ~ and at least two of them are by default told to any website that asks. So it could easily be run off of a bait website ~ either a website that appears to be offering something for nothing, or a phony front-end to a legit site.

I'll bet it was the Illuminati.
In response to a previous response: no, B&N LOSES money from us rooting our devices. We are no longer using their market or their book app, which means that if their device is subsidized, they are losing big if most customers turn to this.
Do I think the call was real, or that B&N cares that much? No, it's not real, and no, B&N doesn't care. Your NC is old school and outmoded to them anyhow. NT is their current device.
As for your phone call, based on what you have said so far, it sounds like you let your information leak on one of these boards, or perhaps your real name, which could be traced to your number using a search on the interwebs. Who called you? Well, either someone wanting to get their hands on your device for free, or some Chinese farmer looking for a quick profit.
Protect your info. That's the lesson to be had here.

My guess is the particular ROM you are using must have some security issues. Maybe while using it for everyday things like signing up for thing online or shopping some scam got a hold of your info.
I can assure you that it's not B&N. I highly recommend a full wipe and re-install an updated version of the ROM you are currently using. The fact that someone even know that you installed Cyanogenmod in your device tells me that they got inside access to your device.

Yeah, I would definitely do a reverse lookup of the number. Maybe report it to B&N (leave out the CM7 part). If it's a scam, they can forward it to the FBI.

How about I offer a legit 3 step process to OP to figure this out...
1. Post callers number here
2. Allow your fellow internet heathen natured co-nerds have some fun.
3. Enjoy the resulting fun.

Security Issues...?

Just read this piece of information...
http://www.thisandroidlife.com/2010...om-infected-iphones-and-android-handsets.html
I've always thought about this ever since a buddy of mine coded a little bot to do about the same thing to an online game.
Anyway, the real question I guess is, What can be done to prevent these types of thing from happening? What do you think?
Doesnt Android tell you everything a program is going to access before it's installed? I ALWAYS read that.
The only thing that this article is trying to point out is that non tech savvy users, which are probably a lot of Smartphone users won't really understand or care to know the "details" of the apps and what its all going to do, as such; they're more prone to installing these malicious apps. On top of that, they were showcasing that right now, they've only taken the GPS coordinates from the phone, but if they wanted to - passwords, messages, etc could be taken from the phone without anyone ever knowing.
I think this is good, it makes people more aware and allows us to be more cautious. Not mention, it's becoming obvious that Mobile data/traffic is easy to target and probably even easier to trick users (than on computers) because of lack of security and the notion that ones' phone cannot be "hacked" or what not.
hm
i had to go threw SlideMe.org to get a app because my bank blocked Android Market lol anyway. They sent out a server wide warning that app was bad last night.
BTW is there an app which logs where and what your phone sends? Like "littlesnitch"?
http://tinyurl.com/o9568k
There's not much that can be done about this, and it's a perfectly legitimate threat.
Yes, the app DOES tell you what it will be doing, but nearly any app that has Network access and Fine Location, especially if it does grab your GPS coordinates for something in the app itself, could send stuff behind the scenes and you'd be completely unaware.
I definitely don't think this will be the last time we'll hear about this sort of malicious app.

Of course but you don't know EXACTLY what the app is doing with the info(unless you tear it apart).Like in the example a weather widget,of course its going to use gps.So what if another app that can access your phones info that would typically need to, but is broadcasting that info to a remote server. If you get what I'm, trying to get at.
Edit: What kmart said...lol
The only truly saving grace of these phones about the sensitivity of location awareness with respect to paranoia of the same, is that we can pull the battery and remove any doubt that the phone cannot disclose its function or location.
There was an article I read a while ago that the Fed's had issued over 3 million location requests last year to Sprint on users - warrant-less! How's that for Paranoia!!!
But all these apps in the market has the Buyer Beware tag so, of course at some point or another it will be exploited! For the most part, the idea of location awareness and marketing/advertisement and or service oriented provisioning is a great concept. The openness of the Android system to provide the same - will undoubtedly have it's shortfalls. A Good Firewall app that notifies and asks for approval prior to transmitting info or accepting connections from an app would go a long way to controlling potential problems. Just like a PC, which basically these phones have become.
well, considering I don't go on any financial sites from my phone, there's not much they can get off it...do they want my school email password? Have at it...they can read those worthless emails if they want (heck, even send a nice threatening email to my profressors for all I care lol).
Not to mention that my phone gets wiped a few times a week, just like so many other people here, there's not much they can get unless they can manage to hack into my google account and steal my credit card info...in which case, they won't be able to spend much on that account, since there's nothing in it lol.
This is as bad as "big brother" listening to my phone calls. What do I care? lol. If someone wants to know where I am, then by all means, let them know where I am. I'm not doing anything of interest to them.
On a side note, we apparently have caught the attention of the mods in this sub-forum, and have become a "family forum" according to a different thread lol.

Hey Tatonka! Lol, wassup? hahaha, but if you could, please elaborate? I know it's off topic, but I'm happy to be apart of the Android Family hehe...
And oh... is there any PGP type Android app that anyone might be familiar with? Lol, just thinking about it with this topic, lol...
I was thinking about that 'Firewall App' idea.Maybe that could be done,it would definitely be something worth looking into.
In response to totonka's post,i hear you.I'm the same way,BUT there are plenty of people who do have sensitive info/files/pictures(you know what I'm talking about) that surely wouldn't want ANYone to have access to.That's just how it is.I'm just thinking of the tons of people who don't even know that this is even possible.

My thoughts also, but I don't know if it is a true Firewall or just handles calls...
A security issue is still a security issue even if it doesn't affect you, and an invasion of privacy is still an invasion of privacy even if you don't care about it. Not trying to start any sort of flame here, please don't take it that way. Just mean to say that if you wait to take a stance on a known problem until it becomes YOUR problem, haven't you maybe waited too long?

Spoofed phone, and replies...

Been using Google voice (not religiously due to family not the most tech savvy). This morning, I wake up, and I find a total of 8 messages from starting from 10:30 at night, to 07:59 this AM. There are a total of 3 reply backs, all having personal information attached to them).
Researching the number back shows an area code of 734 (Ann Arbor), which is ironically the prefix I chose since I previously worked there at U of M.
The really interesting part is that I have a bit of a "stalker" at work, whose number I've blacklisted courtesy of Verizon wireless, and have not had any issues in say 1.5 months. 2 nights ago while at work she asked about setting up a google voice account after just purchasing a Samsung S, stating "I don't have any clue how to set this up". Was a bit busy at the time (patient going bad, honestly didn't really care", and opened up the app and told her to browse through it to get an idea.
How can I track this number (really think it's her) and verify it. I have a harassment case pending in HR regarding her, and would like to have it as material to provide it it really is her. Second, how the hell can my phone respond back? I have "Unknown sources" checked as I use Ti backup.
Any help more than appreciated. Thanks in advance!
LOL Holy christ no. One of the "you can take the girl from the trailer...." She's done this before to others at work, with the last moving to Canada (I **** you not) with his wife and 2 daughters. Been getting worse, hence my interaction with my manager and HR.
google voice also can use your email to reply back to texts..is your email compromised? Change your passwords..and do a hard reset..if you are using TI..just wipe and reinstall ROM...
It's hard to say what/if she did something...but yeah, thats weird.
edit: I live in Ann Arbor, but I wasn't the one...haha.
pretend how u have this treasure in nigeria, and ask her to "help" you bring it here.
Christ, I never thought of that, and I do have that option checked.
Sigh... I just did a complete backup 8 days ago, only difference is 2 games, and I can re-download those.
Google voice already uninstalled. After that I'm going to get number changed, and see if I can get it "unlisted" by Verizon.
What else, any other suggestions are more than welcome and appreciated!
Added question.

do a reverse number lookup and google voice numbers are listed as grandcentral in their service provider. that will tell u at the very least that its a GV number.
Well, after logging into Google voice, somehow her number (which is and has been blocked by Verizon) is listed as a secondary phone, receive text messages on this phone has been checked, PIN not required checked, and never ring. Multiple sign-in is enabled as well.
Just outstanding. Changed email to some bs address. Will verify and forget, as has password to something ridiculous. Any other suggestions?

Document everything that has happened, as thoroughly as possible. Get whatever confirmation you can from Google that shows that your account was somehow compromised.
This chica sounds like she is serious business and doesn't mind playing these games long term. If she compromised your communications you can be sure that it was not just some isolated fun. She most likely mined your account for whatever info she could, and it's possible that she sent things 'on your behalf' that she can later use to accuse you of something.
Change all of your passwords immediately: banking, paypal, email, etc. If she was able to compromise one, it's likely she got into another.
It sounds like worrying about Google Voice or your phone is the least of your concerns: the symptom rather than the disease.
Seriously consider retaining a lawyer for whatever may come of all this insanity.
Maybe it sounds like I'm overreacting but I've seen the havoc that can come from such a situation and from your description, this sounds like it could go all sorts of awful ways.
I dunno... I think you like her.
i think you should talk to the police about this... not XDA... or maybe springer... he always gets the truth out

This is so much BS. if you were really bothered by this person why do you talk to her? why do you bother with her? I think you are her stalker, thats more believable.
I have been stalked by a chick. Its creepy. You get stalked when they're fat and scary looking. So it is possible.
Didn't know that they controlled how fast you post on here if your a new user. That is insane. But understandable.

Aside from just simply changing your passwords, change your security questions to the accounts as well.
Document everything and hand it over to HR
There's also an option to change your google voice number, if you dont mind choosing a new one.

[Q] ROOT?

I love my Evo. Main reason? Personalization, flashing custom roms, flashing fonts, etc. My knowledge of development ain't that great though and I'm wondering from those "in the know": Do you think we'll access root and be able to flash custom roms?
For me, this is the best tablet b/c it runs android. I don't mind the price, I just want to be able to do what I want to the device Opinions?
I wouldn't doubt it. In fact, I expect it. I don't think there are any android devices that haven't been rooted. Just have to give it time once it's released.

That's about all it is. They shut down any access to the loader which means you can get around to install anything. Most of motos new phones are this way. Its a kick in the nards but it protects their hardware from stuff like overclocking and burning out stuff. And of course the occasional brick.
I hate it but I see the point. And I can see the xoom being locked....little expensive for them to have to keep taking back because a new rooter f'ed theirs up.
Hmmm. Though I don't see custom ROMs being as necessary, that actually gives me a touch of pause. I don't like to think that the life of the device can't be extended if Motorola created a XOOM 2 or something.

I don't think the hardware spec as is will get outdated anytime soon.
Well..outdated yes, regress into unusable for web, video and apps.. certainly not.
The device per the data sheet will still run things quite well as we know them now for a very long time.
Only thing yet to be really proven is how teg2 can handle intensive 3d functions in 'real world' scenarios.. and if you think Crysis will be better played on a tablet I have a bridge for sale.

I know the hardware won't be outdated, I'm talking about all the obsolete android phones because their OEMs abandoned them and they never got FroYo. I think if it ends up being locked down I might have to utilize Best Buy's new return policy on the 28th day.

Shame on you for talking to BB employees about anything technical. No hate, but most of them are morons.
It just makes me laugh when I talk to people like that. Being an electronics technician I do it sometimes just to see what chunks of stupid come out of their mouths.
Since the Xoom is intended to be the reference development tablet platform by Google, it should be easy to root and has an easy to unlock bootloader, just like the Nexus One and Nexus S.
That being said, Motorola is Motorola... so they may do their usual Motorola thing and encrypt everything up. But I think the chance that the Xoom is easy to mess around with is pretty high.

Same with me. Infact im not even sure im going to get the damn thing. They were so unorganized and unprepared. I NEVER go on websites and do the ratings but for this i did. It was a horrible experience trying to get this thing pre ordered. 3 of the techs had to talk to each other to figure out what i was asking for. I didnt think the statement "i would like to pre order the motorola xoom" was all that confusing. I never shop at best buy but being as inpatient as i am i took the risk to get my hands on this thing as fast as possible. I just hope i get a call once they come in. As it looked im going to be the only call they have to make.
Did anyone else get a copy of their preorder or just a receipt?

All I got was the receipt and the gift card as well. Got to our BB ~1300 to place the order and was the first to actually place an order, as opposed to people asking questions about it. Course our BB is in a town of ~50,000 (metro area ~150,000) so I was a little concerned they would even get any in for Thursday, they say they are indeed due in this week.
Did see the preorder paperwork she filled out.
Like above, they didn't know what they were looking for. The girl found it without too much wait though.

I have been lurking around for the past couple of months and have learned a lot from the great people that like to help and share information. This is indeed a great community of people. This is my first post so if it seems long winded I apologize. Now my reason for my thread title. I live in Phoenix AZ (I know it's a dry heat), I was watching the news tonight and they did a story on the search of cell phones by the police. It seems that in California if you get stopped for anything, traffic ticket, jay walking, ect. and your cell phone is within arms length of you, the officer can ask for your phone and can search through it no search warrant needed! Yes that means anything and everything that is on your phone is free game (I find that a little strange since last year a husband went to court over accessing his wife's email and reading it.) But as the story was told California Supreme court upheld the ruling which again states that any person who comes in contact with a law enforcement officer can have their cell phone "looked at". This means call history, web sites visited, your phone book, and any and all information that is stored on your device. The only catch is that the device has to be within arms reach of the person. I am not a criminal, never even had a traffic ticket, but the thought of someone going through my phone drives me crazy. I keep my phone locked with a passcode, so would that mean that I would have to unlock my device for them to snoop through it? Anyway I found this interesting and I thought that I would share it with anyone who cares. My question is, of all of the talent that is in this community, has there ever been an app made like a "kill all pill", something that with just the touch of a button your device would be reset to factory settings and/or scrub the sd card? Just a thought. Once again thank you for allowing me to gain more knowledge of my device and to share in the community. Keep up the great work!

I saw the same report about California on our news.
I have news for you, I will never consider living in that state.
That is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS and a step away from the government having video cameras in your house.
I don't know what you can do exactly.
If you ever get pulled over, send the ***** into your custom recovery and format all.
Scary what this country is turning into.
Just toss the phone in the back seat.
I'd actually be kinda curious about the existence of such an app, also....
Ridiculous is all I can say

I'd tell them to **** themselves and take them to the supreme court. That's purely unconstitutional.

One more step in complete government control .... I live in Cali and truth be told if it wasn't for my son(separated parents) I wouldn't even live in this country.

I completely agree with you but unfortunately in this day and age "unconstitutional" doesn't mean a damned thing.
The Patriot act is "unconstitutional"...
Actually I just decided to NOT list all the things that are "unconstitutional" that are realities, I don't have that kind of time.
This country went to **** years ago

*smash*
*I'm assuming this is similar to the 'plug n' pull' (ya like that?) that was mentioned before. If all it takes is smashing the phone to ****, well, I'd do it in a heartbeat. If I just had pr0n on my phone I wouldn't even care. But that never touches my phone. Nor my computer; felt the need to add that. I'm talking serious business. Not that 'phone tapping' couldn't be possible (yes, it can happen to us all) but anything to shut an effort down. I'd even smash my rooted device and give up a chance of rooted glory for all the bull**** that could come of it. I hate cops. I've had some horrible experiences with them in the past. I'm not a 'blah blah f*ck you' to the face anymore, but I don't play that ****. You can instantly tell when a cop is on the push, and usually it is because you are in a bad situation. But some trivial ****? Nah, I don't, and won't, play that.
Keep your phone locked. If they ask for the pass code, tell them no.

I don't think it works like that, provided this was similar to the talk before ... your 'ish' gets plugged in and by some 'miracle super duper government cop pull' they jack any and everything off your phone.
I'd like some clarification though. I haven't seen a link, but this sounds pretty similar to the talk before.
I'd honestly laugh if this was a, "Gimme your phone son. Ok, how do I see your 'texties?'"

They have a device they can hook the phone up to which copies all of the data.
Yeah, that's what I'm saying this sounds like. 'That talk before.'
If you could honestly lock your phone and deny access, well, that's a massive failure on their part. That is what I was saying. It sounds like all that business mentioned a month or two ago.

Locking the phone will do nothing.
I suppose you can wipe the phone but, as we all know, the only way to truly destroy data is acid.
Right. If I am remembering correctly it was mentioned as such before. That's what I was saying. I wouldn't be surprised if this was being considered in Illinois. I should make a point of turning my phone off / removing the card everytime we / I get pulled over. Swallow the card if it appears suspect and smash the phone. I'd totally get tasered over as much.*

This is BULL**** !
Im glad I live in Sin City
Just another reason for me to hate living in Cali. I must have missed the report but I remember about a month or so ago some state in the north eastern part of the us displayed a new device just for cell phones that police were beginning to use. Basically it comes with universal plug or what ever and totally scans phone in a matter of seconds. All contents are then stored in said device for further review. files included absolutely everything! Pictures, videos, internet history/cache, emails, call history etc. Welcome to socialism! California is leading the way.

Just use titanium backup and dropbox. Then if being pulled over just boot to recovery and format all. Might still be able to recover the data though. We need a secure format option.

Police officers can ask for lots of things. You don't have to give it to them. If an officers asks if he can look in your trunk you can say no, if they ask to come into your house you can say no, if they ask you anything you can remain silent. So if you have something on your phone that you don't want the police to see, just say no when they ask if they can look at it.
I have seen police go to apartments where the neighbor reported that someone was smoking pot. They can smell the pot, but if no one answers the door, or the person who answers does not let them in they can't take any further action.

While I won't dispute Cali's socialist leanings, this is NOT evidence of it. Evidense of Fascism? Sure is! Socialism? No. There are big differences between communism and socialsim, and both can be facist...but so can democracy. Fascism is the real evil. Socialism and communism are only theoretical evils that tend to die off as time progresses (though either one work very well in small communities. Funny thing: almost any humane fiscal system can work, and work well, on a small scale...it is when one starts dealing with larger societies that the sh1t hits the fan). But this is all far more political than is allowed.

Someone hasn't been paying attention to what is going on
What is "allowed" and what has been actually happening are two completely different things. Wanna see a video of people being body-slammed and tied up for dancing at the Jefferson monument? Minute 2:40 is when they tell someone that they will be arrested for continuing to record.
Here is a news report on the incident

Kingroot

Root app that claims to root all android devices. I'll save you the trouble of trying, cause it does not work on the Fire TV. There are videos of devices being rooted that were unrootable before, but for some reason it does not work on the Fire TV, but it does work on Fire phone and Amazon tablets. Hopefully in the future it will work on the Fire TV.
I read the apk is not safe. Rumors about the root app which connects to chinese server and sends private data (but it could be just not true). Can anyone confirm?
Regards
I think the app is safe. Everyone always thinks devs are tryin to hack peoples devices and it never happens, so I doubt this app is any different. Also if people are worried then they probably shouldn't keep persnal info on their devices. If anyone hacked aany device I own they would get nothing. I never use my SS number, i never leave active cards on my Amazon account, so if my device gets hacked ther hacker is wasting his time. Maaybe they can hack my email or Facebook, but all they'll get from them is spam. I only use Facebook to connect wwith apps, and my email accounts are atleast ten years old and not one person I know has my email adresses, cause I only use them to be ble to signup for other website accounts. All of my imprtant info is stored in the cloud that I call my brain, and no hacker can get to it.
Didn't try it, but reddit is reporting it doesn't work.
Edit: Looks like someone got it to work after a factory reset.
Also, it is naive to trust running something where they don't release the source. Your device, do what you want though.
They didn't release the source for the same reason other devs sometimes don't, cause they do not want google to know how they are rooting devices. Whatever exploit(s) they are using would become useless if they releassed the source. I already posted that it does not work on the Fire TV, but it does work on a lot of other devices. I simply made this thread because people were gonna hear about Kingroot and try it so I figured I would save them some time. Also, it may work on the Fire TV in the future.

I don't want to argue that credible devs release their source. But whatever, it is a leap of faith. There is rarely harm done. But best to be cautious.
And sorry for the optimism. The successful root was on the Fire PHONE. You are correct, still no luck on the stick or TV. It will come eventually for those waiting.
Let's suppose it does do something naughty. Root, install Clockwork, then overwrite the whole firmware with a pre-rooted one. Problem solved.
can anyone confirm if this works after a factory reset.. we should act on this soon before the hole is closed.
"I think the app is safe."
thanks! super-lol. I don't even know how to.
"do not want google to know how"
triple-lol. as if google is not extremely aware of open defects internally and/or on CVE / MITRE. huh I guess I kinda-sorta did know how to.
google fixes its **** near-immediately. the reason $RANDOM_DEVICE is rootable is because the actual-downstream-vendor is too lazy/cheap to push updated binaries.
too lazy to type more of the obvious. more on this here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60697482&postcount=28
part XVII: efuse. efuse. m. f. ing. efuse. do people seriously not know about this by now?!
Does efuse factor in at all regarding future root methods? Or is it pretty much void now that we can unlock bootloader? That was a huge deal months ago, and now I hear lots of talk about new root exploits without anyone commenting on efuse.

The person actually said it worked on the Fire Phone after resetting, not the Fire TV, but if you are willing to reset your Fire TV, try it and let us know if it works.
I am trying out the app now. I used the air mouse app in the app store to navigate. The app was designed for a touch screen. I am trying on my fire stick first. Will report back.

Yes Google is aware just like Apple is aware of exploits, but have you ever read the devs working on IOS jailbreaks? They openly state that they have jailbreaks for new firmware and even post videos of them jailbreaking it, but refuse to release jailbreaks until after dev builds are over and the actual firmware is out because they do not want Apple to fix the exploit they have used. Its basically the same wiith Android, but the only difference is there are no dev builds from google. The app is safe. Tell me the last time you installed something that ruined your credit, stole your identity or personal info. I am guessing it has never happened to you, just like it wouldn't if you installed Kingroot. If not releasing the source means they are not legit then that must mean 99% of developers are not legit. I do not have the source for Angry Birds, but that would not stop me from installing it if I chose to. People are too paranoid about being hacked. Really think about it, what is someone even gonna get if they hack your device?? And wouldn't it be your fault if they got any of your personal info in the first place? They have been telling people for around 20 years not to put personal info on their computers so if people are dumb enough to do it then its kind of their own fault. People know better than to smoke too, but they still do it. Long story short, even if someone was gonna go to the trouble of hacking someones phone, they would go for someone that actually has something they want, like someone famous. Its like when people say they have haters, when nobody really hates them. Who is gonna waste time hting someone that flips burgers, when there are better people to hate on? Nobody wants to hack our phones, trust me.
I tried it just now with KingRoot versions 3.4.1.157 and 4.0.0.233 on my german FTVS with blocked updates. Both times there is the sad looking Android head (and the number 13804 in the second version).
I had the same result. no go.

Did you do a reset first? It apparently works for some devices only if they are reset. Some people said it worked on the Fire Phone without resetting, but others are saying they had to reset before it would work. I would do it, but I do not feel like resetting my device. Maybe someone will do reset and try it on The Fire TV and the stick and report back so we will know if it works. I predict it won't work, but if someone is willing to try on the box and the stick after resetting, that would be great.

Not misinformed at all. Talk to any financial expert or online securities expert and they would laugh in your face if you told them you stored personal information on an electronic device. The best place to store information is in your brain. You know your ss number so why put it in your device? You have a credit card or debit card so why put it on you device when its in your pocket? People get viruses on their computers, but most of the time those are meant to cause havoc, not to steal your info. When hackers want to take stuff they try taking it from systems like department stores and banking systems, not people with $100 in the bank. Maybe you should get informed about who online hackers are stealing from, cause in most cases they are not trying to steal directly from everyday people. If the common persons info gets stolen its usually stolen from somewhere else, like a bank or department stores online system, and not from your devices.

I agree. Can we keep this post on topic. Namely Kingroot. I'm not really interested in your long winded post either. I don't want to discourage devs from looking into a potential root because the thread turns into a pissing contest. That appears to be what happened with the thread about CM12 on the fire tv.
Thanks
