[Q] Orange UK Tethering WP7 Omnia 7 - Omnia 7 General

Just wondering if anyone was on an Orange contract and had tried using Mango's internet sharing feature with their Omnia 7..
I noticed on their site that there is a daily charge for tethering - but they seem to think you can only do it with an iPhone. Am I right to think that unless I raised suspicion they wouldn't catch me out using it and I wouldn't get the daily charges applied?
Thanks in advanced!

I wasn't aware that Orange had released the Internet Sharing update... I am still on pretty old firmware on my stock Orange UK Omnia 7.
Annoying since they haven't even released the keyboard fix either.

Sorry! Should have pointed out that I am on MiROM and that I was originally on Three and the phone is 3 branded.
Hope that clears that up. But this is what I was getting at - they don't actually have WP7 tethering, so will they instantly know im doing it and charge my bill with the £1 a day tethering fee?

boot splash is T-mobile, i will do a start up video of the phone and a mini review for you to see! =)
The T-mobile release was not meant for another week or two, (well done on getting a phone)
I was give an early December release date when I spoke to them onthe phone and opted to leave in favour of Voda.
If these companies gave their frontline staff better info then maybe they would keep more customers.
Any chance of some more vids. (especially any showing any differences in the T-Mobile Rom)
thanks in advance..

lol i was literally nagging t-mobile every single day! and they told me it would be released on the 9th.. they then said on the 13th so i rang up and sorted out my contract around 12:30pm and they told me they had 1000 in stock and there was 30 left, so if there was no weekend i would of had it last week...
i just uploaded a boot splash video
and will upload some various other for you to see
Did you say you got it on upgrade? If so how much and on what priced contract?

Hello mate, I have just got my tmob hd2 did you get the you tube, Twitter apps? doesn't look like we got the co pilot trial either...
You should have gone through a 3rd party, i got mine on T-mobile today and it came with a pouch, wifi router is there, so is the co-pilot trial and the other apps that seem to be missing on t-mobile branded handsets. Mine is also unlocked and has no branding at all
Got mine yesterday, initially very impressed.
Unfortunatly got it direct from T-mobile on an upgrade (18months)
...so No pouch!! and No YOUTUBE! you can add twitter from one of the settings pages but i have no interest in that at the moment.
Phoned T-mobile after seeing that on page 4 of the quick start guide it listed 'POUCH' as being included----I thought HTC may have forgot about them for this rushed batch for T-mobile
I was very disapointed in T-mobiles responce ....they expected me to phone HTC!!
They then sent me a txt saying 'their warehouse said it was not included..see page 4 of the quick start guide!'
...Either someone at T-mobile warehouse has just nicked a load of them after deleting all the youtube software...or T-mobile dont want to bother contacting HTC on their customers behalf to highlight their error!
On a positive note the Wifi Router app works faster and better than the '3' 3G dongle I had been using for internet for the past 2 months
i would be interested to know how much t-mobile are charging for this handset as through mobilephonesdirect I got a completely unbranded and unlocked handset for free on tmobile combi 30 for 34 pounds a month. that's for 700 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited internet on an 18 month contract. I usually prefer to go through high street retailers but I really can't imagine them being able to match that deal.

Its strange because my pouch was actually in the box and the box is sealed so if the T-mobile boxes are sealed it must have actually been HTC that have removed these from the T-mobile packages???

Well I am awaiting stock from Tmobile as I just missed the first wave. I got a 24mth upgrade for £20 a month with 300 minute calls, unlimited text and mobile. Phone cost £31. I'm happy with that cos I don't need more phone minutes but they said I could upgrade to £30 a month to get the 700 minute calls. If I needed that number of minutes I would have gone for your deal on MPD so I could have an unbranded handset.
When you guys refer to 'T-mobile' branding, I assuming this is just the software (boot splash, etc) and not any logos physically on the phone itself?
well t-mobile and htc are blaming each other for the lack of 'pouch' and i dont really want to spend anymore of my life hoping that the dimwits i spoke to over the phone grow a brain cell or 2.
Does anyone know how to put the youtube software back on a T-mobile phone???
Does anyone have the software? or a partial rom or cab---dont know how to add the original rom!!!
Ps. got mine for £60 inc delivery on an upgrade (wanted it free) on flex35 for 18months offered same deal for flex 25 but wanted the 3gb internet that was included---then added another £10 a month to get web and walk max with 10gb allowance that allows skype usage......so £45 per month +£60 =£870total contract
....so really upset at not being able to have the bonus of using youtube on the go after paying all that extra to use the internet
Good news----cancelled my already broken home broadband today so gets me more of the monthly cost back--ie.the phone replaces my home broadband and my dongle top up charges when travelling
Wireless router for o2 builds
Good to see that T-Mob aren't playing about with things too much!

Fortunately there aren't any exterior logos branded on the device itself, it's just as you assumed, splash screens both start up & shut down plus a couple of apps.

Using the Router feature in the UK.

Hiya,
I've had search through the forum, but nothing specific came up that I found. So pardon me if I am asking an old question. I also checked the link at the top of the forum, but the Wiki links weren't working.
I have just come out of my old contract and was looking at the HD2 as a possible option for a new phone. It has a 'Wifi Router' feature which seems quite unique, but it also hits a grey area in phone contracts.
Would using this feature be classed as 'tethering' or 'tunnelling'? (I think that's what it's called.) Would there be any additional charges from a UK provider such as O2 or Orange? How would they know?
With my old Orange contract I'd often take my SIM card and put it in an unlocked 3G dongle and this would enable me to use my laptop at work to browse webpages and... play Warcraft... Anyway, I never incurred any extra charges with Orange as, I guess, they had no idea that I was doing it.
Would this work in a similar fashion?
Please share your experiences from UK service providers when using this feature. I'm mainly looking at O2 as CPW have an attractive offer of a free phone and just the right amount of minutes and texts for a nice price.
Hi, yes, it's the same as tethering, except that instead of the comp using the phone as a modem, the phone creates its own connection and then shares it, so it's possibly a little harder for 'them' to see what you are doing, as they will still only see a phone rather than a data modem.
O2 have removed the wifi router from their rom, but that is easily replaced by flashing a new rom.
I doubt they will be able to tell what you are doing, certainly not unless they do some pretty hardcore packet inspection, perhaps, however teh fair useage data policies will apply, of course.
i have unlimited data bolt on, so there is probably no less useage when its not acting as a router than when there is!
Personally i wouldn't worry about it.
I'm on O2 and did get a slap on the wrist when I had my phone tethered to my laptop while I spent a couple of nights in hospital. I watched a few 1 hour episodes on BBC iplayer, and I think that pushed me over the 1GB fair usage limit. They sent me a text and a letter, which is fair enough.
However, I'm not sure how they can claim on the one hand that tethering the phone to a laptop is against the terms and conditions of the contract when they advertise the following for the HD2:
"Carry the HTC HD2 in your pocket and you'll never have to worry about finding a Wi-Fi access point for your laptop. Your phone simply connects to superfast 3.5G cellular networks and becomes your personal wireless access point; anytime, anywhere. "

LOL, yet the one I got from O2 has wifirouter removed, nice.
I'm with t-mobile Web&Walk+ £30/month and I've been using my phone as a modem for the last 3 years or so. Usually on a laptop or netbook, all over the UK and EU. I've never really caned it with downloads but have used uploads very heavily but I guess I've stayed within the 'fair usage' policy, whatever that is at the moment. I suppose streaming / p2p / usenet would raise issues but FTP uploads and the like doesn't seem to bother them and if it does they haven't bothered me.
The wireless router on teh HD2 works a treat and it's one less cable/dongle to carry.
Used mine as a wifi router pretty heavily a couple of days ago (500MB in a day, maybe a bit more)... no extra charges showing on my online bill and they would be there by now
If you go with O2, you have to flash to a different ROM from the O2 ROM though... although that's a painless 10 minute proceedure... plus it fixes a few little bugs
Thanks very much for the advice everyone. Really has been helpful.
My new HD2 is on the way and will be here tomorrow. I took out the £7.50 a month bolt-on for unlimited data downloads too, pushing the total to £37.50 (a smidgin over the amount I wanted to pay).
I'm actually more shocked that they accepted me for credit.

I'm using a SE Xperia X1 at the moment, but I did hear O2 have removed the wifi router feature, despite advertsing it (false advertising). I got a HD2 from Virgin and it was great, but had to return it because of the slow download speeds.
I'm looking to upgrade with O2 now that I have ported my number back to them.

Buying a N1 for a UK user

Hey peeps,
Got some money to burn before the end of my tax year and have been keeping my eye on the phone market recently (boy has it been eventful with the passing of the MWC), and have decided i want a Nexus One.
Can i just get a few questions clear so i know it's defiantly the right choice (as i keep thinking i should wait for the *cough* iphone *cough* 4 *cough*):
1) Will the N1 get updates to Android first over other Android phones like the milestone and the Desire?
2) Will there be any issues with updates as i will be buying from the US for me in the UK?
3) If i have a problem with my N1 where do i go to get it fixed in the UK?
4) Is the N1 'always on'? (need to decide what data package to go for)
5) If i root the N1 will this cause problems with Android updates?
6) If i put the HTC Sense on the N1 will this cause problems with Android updates?
I can't think of any other major questions, but i am sure i will ask if i do
Paul
1) It will be faster than the milestone, but for the Desire we don't know yet. Anyway, it's not like features like this won't be ported the next day by the devs here
2) No problem.
3) Dunno, sorry
4) Well it can connected only on demand, but it's not how android is supposed to be used I guess.
5) Not so far, and at worse you'll have to wait (not long) for unofficial updates
6) You'll have to use the updates found here. The OS won't be 100% identical to the Desire, so no official updates will work. Applications updates from the market work us usual though.
Thanks Blimblim
with regards to No.4, i asked cus someone told me that the iphone is always on, so if it hasn't found a wifi network to connect to it uses GPRS or 3G which could get costly if i'm out and about
With No.6 I think i might leave it as stock if it may cause problems/inconveniences. (but i might change my mind when i get it )
3) It'll go to HTC UK who are based in Milton Keynes.
4) You can turn data on and off as you please with the 'Toggle Data' widget.
sir.chunk said:

2) Will there be any issues with updates as i will be buying from the US for me in the UK? No
3) If i have a problem with my N1 where do i go to get it fixed in the UK? Phone gets sent off to HTC in Milton Keynes
4) Is the N1 'always on'? (need to decide what data package to go for) Yes, although you can disable mobile data with APNDroid, which was fine for me till I sorted a dataplan
5) If i root the N1 will this cause problems with Android updates? Only if you load a custom ROM
6) If i put the HTC Sense on the N1 will this cause problems with Android updates? Yes, as it's a custom ROM, not that the devs wont include the updates themselves though.

I'm from uk and have an N1
1) Update was prompted to me the moment the wizard setup up wifi (by establishing my google accounts) upon startup
2) None so far. Be aware navigation will only work at present if you root your phone (iphone equivalent of jailbreaking). Google are working on a european version, i chose to wait. And then there is an intermittent sync error with Picasa web albums directly onto the phone, though you can still access the web version in your browser in seconds [EDIT - this will be resolved by updates according to Google forums]
3) A problem with software would be to contact Google. Hardware would require HTC's uk based team.
4) You can chose to not have data roaming, chose to not update any widgets should you wish. For your information i'm on O2 simplicity at £20 a month, 800 minutes, 1600 texts and unlimited internet and have had no problems. Advice if you'r unsure would be to buy the paid version of the Taskiller app, it can be selected to automatically close background apps and therefore stop unnecessary data.
5) Not rooted mine. Chose not to do mine as i'm new to Android it's still much more customizable than iphone and Winmo so i'm a happy user with current abilities. I will pursue rooting if Google do not update a sat nav app for uk in the next few months. There are plenty of youtube videos around to show you how with forum advice.
6) Again, there are plenty of youtube videos with the 2.1 Desire new Rom working on the N1 successfully. No visual performance issues fromt he ones i've seen and everything looks as it should.
Hope i've been of some help.
Regards
Scott
oooooo, this is all very exciting! Thanks everyone for the info.
Didn't know HTC had a centre in MK - WINNER!
I think i will leave putting HTC sense on for now. I did it with the X1 and liked it, but that's only cus what SE had to being with was about as much use as a chocolate tea pot! lol

Also, to the OP, you really should get an unlimited data plan. They are pretty standard now, even on PAYG, and you are not gonna get anywhere near as much out of the phone without one.

If DHL try to shaft you for the duty charge, phone them up and demand it taken off your bill. UK customs state that mobile phones and PDAs have 0% duty fee. They put a 5% duty on mine, so I called them up. The lines are always busy, but as soon as I got through it was only a 2 mins affair. They have to recalculate the VAT and other charges so they'll send you a new updated bill in about a week or so.
Hey guys, what was the total cost in £'s if you don't mind me asking (phone, Duty?, VAT)?
Also, would you think when Vodafone release it in the UK, will it be different to the one from Google direct?

HTC just released the HTC Sync™for HTC Wildfire. I suppose this will allow you to sync with MS Outlook.
Got my wildfire on 3 a couple of days ago, and so far really impressed with the little beastie I love how everything just works on it, and doesnt need tweaking. With the exception of HTC's website. It doesnt accept my S/N to download the HTC sync for my wildfire and being able to sync with outlook/exchange is critical for me. Anyone else getting this issue?
I have mine for 7 month now
I got one for my son a couple of days ago and he has not put it down since

UK Users Thread

Figured it would be nice for all us Brits to have a thread discussing how the U11 is on UK networks.
EE - VoLTE and WIFI Calling work out of the box on unlocked model from Very.co.uk
got mine from Carphone Warehouse on an EE contract and although unlocked it did have WiFI calling enabled, although in theory , this should not be the case as its not EE branded. Not complaining though I do not know how VoLTE works so i don't know how to check it. Might be the case that all unlocked UK CID models can support wifi calling, regardless of carrier branding. So nordic or others might not be able to do that.
Only gripe , and I have created a separate thread for that, is that Galileo support is not enabled on my phone which is strange and kinda stupid.

Hmmmm I probably would. Better everything apart from audio volume from headphones.
The only concern is the durability and smashing if I manage to drop it especially after coming from the HTC 1 0 all metal. I'll see how the Oneplus 5 does as that is also very tempting.
I have a u11 coming from O2 but unlocked. I use it with EE but I can't find a way to have 4g calling and Wi-Fi calling.
Someone could help?
Sounds like it probably has O2 firmware on it which means you're SOL for the time being until S-OFF arrives.
My device is unlocked unbranded stock firmware and 4g VoLTE calling and WiFi calling worked from day one. The phone actually asked if I wished to enable them.
Do you have the option in settings for WiFi calling (4g calling is in phone settings).
I'm on O2. You have to request it through the O2 app. Scroll down to 'Device details' and you will see Wifi and 4G calling. Click on it and it will send a request to O2, takes 24 hours.

Hi guys,
Do you think it's worth an upgrade over the HTC 10 which is my current driver? I have joined HTC Club and the price has dropped to £584 via HTC website which is very tempting...

That's what I did as my 10 still in contract with Vodafone for a year more but I really wanted an upgraded. Loving the u11 so far it has fixed the issues I had with my 10 like bad wifi/mobile signal problems with Bluetooth to my car system (weird micro cuts every so often)
The first device I got was faulty rebooted/shut down all the time couldn't even get through the setup wizard, got a refund and ordered a new one that is now working great.
Do wish Vodafone would enable WiFi and 4G calling but heck knows when/if that will happen unless you have a business account which I believe have it.
Edit: Seems vodafone does have this option now, can be enabled from your account it seems.
The single SIM model sold directly by the HTC has the LTE Cat. 16 modem?

Has anyone in the UK single sim received the Oreo update yet?
I am with EE , CID EVE__001 and still on Nougat 7.1.1 and firmware 1.27.91.10 with security patch October.
I am a bit disappointed by their lack of updates and support regarding updates.

The Oreo update was released today. Currently having trouble updating mine, it downloads the update but then reboots into TWRP recovery then can't go any futher.
You have to return to stock before updating via OTA, with stock firmware, no root etc.
Bootloader can stay unlocked though.

Did this actually work? o2 say that the only compatible devices are iPhone's, Samsung's and some Sony's.

Did you ever get this to work?
I'm happy with the phone apart from 2 issues:
- Still on the November security patch, and considering it's nearly March I don't think this is acceptable. America has December.
- Google Assistant does not work. Voice activation does not work and all the settings are greyed out. Have looked online and cannot find a fix. Have read even a restore won't fix it!
If these issues were addressed then this would be the best phone I've had.
Just to add to this. I have an unlocked / unbranded u11 from CPW UK. O2 sim pay monthly account. I've enabled the option in the app as above but still no toggles etc in my settings menu. I called htc UK just now and they said that a bug in the oreo update has removed this option, it's a known bug and the next update will address it... Seriously? Also no idea when the update will roll out...
Had mine since January after an unplanned upgrade and I'm really glad my HTC 10 got mullered by my friend's kid. Carphone Warehouse piled on extras and I eventually started pushing back to stop the freebies getting out of hand - had to move to EE from Vodafone for some reason I can't remember - not an issue. Rooted while on the wine 2 nights later so as to increase the suspense and the chance of bricking it - I went at it half cut basically and nearly trashed it, which is so much fun.
Can't grumble in Manchester city about signal or service although EE has a website that suggests they are delaying any move into the post 90's era and I'm sure they have a reason we'll one day marvel at when they suddenly replace a web presence so **** it must be deliberate digital art or summat - like Tracey Emin and Banksy making a collaborative statement about Google ruining everything - that is to be replaced by the tech from the movie War Games to make it more modern. At least the customer service is accessible if needed and don't annoy me with 'suggestions' like an app. that tells me things I know already but in a different way which makes it exciting and utterly essential.
The u11 is a top phone and if someone gave me a Samsung I'd curse the fool who did so. There's a list of superior spec's that the recent Samsung phones possess and yet on benchmark tests they mostly squeeze into a slight lead and can't manage to avoid being made by Samsung which means that it has lots of stuff but none of it is connected right and it will eventually make you feel angry because it slowly reveals its nature as a piece of crap with buttons like a phone.
I just wish HTC would explore an alternative to the Android system because Google are getting a bit shifty and I don't like the way they are more powerful than God but get all hissy with developers - they come at you like an all-powerful bastard when they're pissed but always do a great job of being really rubbish at maintaining a standpoint and eventually they go away - still, Stalin was bit annoying and no one would have thought he'd end up killing 10 million people before the War even started but he had the tools and then the bad mood - if Google don't do evil it's only cos they haven't seen the projections from Wall Street that show the profit they can make. If any company can shake Google surely HTC can - Samsung may do so but totally unintentionally and probably due to the distraction caused by phones that set aflame like a crappy transformer that is a phone AND a firework - then neither.
