[Q] One click root for A200 - Acer Iconia A500

Sorry I didn't see a thread for the A200 so I posted here. I am wondering if there is a root solution for the A200 ICS update yet. Thanks

It's ok. We accept all Acer users here. I'll ask my friend. Maybe he knew of a root for a200. Then I'll post back.

Answer to root, is No. Not at this time.
Also I understand, the internal Mic is worse than the mic on the a500.
Might want to return that puppy while you still can.

Well so far I haven't had any issues with the mic tbh, but thanks for the incite though. I'll keep my fingers crossed for a root soon :O

What? Why would he want to return it because of the mic? I have had it for two weeks and have not used it once... That's a weird thing to say to someone. This tab is sweet. I personally played with the A500 and the A100 before I purchased and for the price of the A500 I would have rather gotten a Asus, and as for the a100.. Its to small.
Might as well tell him that there is no HDMI out or back camera. Oh wait hardly no one uses those things either. lol

?????
Why would anybody buy a tab, and not use it for 2 weeks? Strange, usually one wants to try it and look for defects after buying while they still have the chance to return it and get a refund.

I use my tablet to video chat with my wife (she's in the states, I'm in Korea). I think thats a pretty good reason to return a device with a defective mic.

Absolutely. To be honest, I'm lucky with the mine. Actually works better than my notebooks internal mic with Skype.
I would have thought Acer might have done something a little better with the upcoming models. My friend in the states just returned his 200 after a couple of days, as the mic was the worst he'd ever had. So I suppose it's going to be another "hit and miss" with the mic's again

What's the verdict? Any root methods for the A200? Particularly for those running ICS.
Thanks!

There is no root for the a200 that i know of.. This is likely to be like the a100.Only even a longer wait.. The a200 is a downgrade device from the a 500.When the a500 hit the market people pre ordered them and jumped in buying them at a uncontrollable rate. The Market is saturated with them They are still available.Have the same hardware but a few extras. With the above said. there are less of them out there. This causes slower development. Just keep watching and searching. If it comes available you will not miss it. I use google search best way to find this stuff..
Be patient im sure it will come. and in the not so very far away future..

Well so far my mic isnt that bad. This is however, my first tablet so not much basis there. Lol

Fingers crossed for a root soon....

Tried all ics root methods could find
Have tried all available ics root processes I could find and not one has worked so far. So hoping for an official working root method.

Root has been completed.
Just completed the root tonight.
Posted in its own thread. In these forums.

Ditto!! Root is out!!

Remember...this is just root access. This isn't a bootloader unlock, so no custom recoveries and ROMs possible yet. Also, I'm hearing the root isn't 100%. Some apps needing root work...some don't.
Just FYIs.

I can't seem to figure out how this root works. I don't really wanna brick my device, so I guess I have to wait until there is a 1 click method.

Mine is rooted although it isn't full root and my boot loader Is unlocked.

IIRC to unlock bootloader, fastboot
then
fastboot oem unlock
toggle volume when you see the screen for the choice, once on "unlock" toggle volume up.
I could be wrong, as I'm quoting from memory.

Unlocked Bootloader?

Hello all...
I apologize if this has been asked already but does the A500 have an unlockable bootloader? That's really the only thing holding me back from purchasing one.
Locked...at the moment, check the recovery thread below to follow the progress.
Sent from my Droid using XDA Premium App
locked isn't that big of a problem...locked and encrypted IS.
I'm picking up a camera at best buy tonight and if I get my tablet (which I was planning on getting soon anyway...just wasn't decided on model) at the same time, it will be interest free for 18 months
I'll probably grab the A500 and see if I can contribute development wise.
EDIT: I'm going to hold off a few more weeks yet...I waited this long, I can wait a little longer.

I am just not much help in the dev department
Rather than start a new thread, I'll just post my question here.
I'm about to pull the trigger on the Iconia, especially with the deals going on right now. I know the bootloader is locked, but I'm wondering what does it limit us from doing? We have root (is it temp root?) and we can flash ROMs. What can't we do? And in case Acer stops releasing updates, can we update it with ICS by flashing?

The bootloader is NOT locked. It IS, however, protected by a hashcode. That's what the "itsmagic" tool does, it recalculates the hashcode after flashing a ROM so that the device can boot.
If you forget that step (our custom CWM does it for you), say hello to bricksville. Otherwise, we can do what we want.
Thanks for the reply. I figured something like that a few minutes after I posted. I was just confused at the complaints that the A500 was locked in other forums.
So to be clear, as long as someone can port it, we will be able to get "updates" even if Acer drops all support?

Yep, as long as someone ports it, we don't need Acer.

Is it true??? Root maybe coming??

So I found this on the EVO 3D channel. Looks like they found a hole they may be able to use for rooting 2.3.3!

Right now, there is NO new root. I guaranty you there will be people Fighting to be the first to post when it actually drops. Plus, if you read the thread, they state that it seems to be very device specific...meaning it may not help us, we don't know yet. Unless you are a dev or a tester, we are still in wait-and-see mode.
True but I suspect the same root will work on this device as well. Just surprised to see so little chatter about it

Why get the hopes up of all of the noobs that took the OTA. The smart ones that got unlucky with a warranty swap or an insurance claim that got 2.3.3 on a new/refurb phone knows where to look and when to ask about it.
I heard unrevoked has a solution. They appear to have bootloader loop issue to resolve before they can publish a solution.
Hope this is true.

True, yes it may be coming. Quote the maybe part ok let's all move on.
They actually said last night in IRC that it's unlikely that the exploit will work on Sense 1.0 roms.

Did Acer kill the Iconia?

It just seems like they made it impossible to root , reverting back is fine I suppose and searching for other roms (which may or may not be stable ,use at your own risk) !
Ive seen some of the smartest people in XDA and I cant seem to figure out why other tablets using the same updates have been rooted but not the iconia ? The writing is on the wall for this tablet , expect to see a new version soon (just in time for Christmas)!
First, wrong section; you should know better by now.
Second, just because Acer have made it a bugger to root, doesn't mean the tablet is dead. It's absolutely useable without being rooted, and 99% of consumers don't actually give a monkeys about rooting, or even know what it actually is.
Hell, we get plenty of people on here asking what it is or what it's for...
New iconia is scheduled for Dec release but may get pushed back to january.
Interesting, you are posing that on XDA. We dont believe in Impossible to Root device. That is why people come to XDA; How to break what seem unbreakable or unlock what seem unlock-able. Just give some time, some genius will always find a way to kick some Corporate teeth in.
well wasnt it acer excuse not unlock the bootloader since honeycomb was not open source. I think that was one of their statements, so once we get updated to ICS maybe we all can start with a tweet assault on them again.
Not sure about u guys but I feel more comfortable recommending the xoom or asus tab just cause they are so open, same goes for those nook colors.

You should look at the older phones like the Desire and before that if you think its hard to root here, you'd probably cry at the thought of creating a gold card.
How people complain that a rooting process that takes all of 15 minutes and a couple of reboots is hard is beyond me. In 3.1 and below all you have to do is download a file from the market. In 3.2 you have to run one update file from recovery, install the aforementioned files from the market, then flash one of the ROMs from here - such as the completely stable completely standard 3.2 ROMs, or the excellent and completely stable Thor ROMs. If that's too difficult for people then maybe they shouldn't be attempting it on something that cost them £300.

LOL - that was exactly was I was thinking after reading the first post. I have got a Desire and rooted it with goldcard etc. - long before the newer and way easier methods were developed.
Yesterday I got my Iconia 501 with Stock HC 3.2 on it and rooting it was a real breeze
Seriously? Near impossible to root? This guy must be slow, because this was just insanely easy... been rooted for months and tried nearly every rom at least once, all easy as pie.

Same thing with the original mytouch. I had to use a gold card and there were no less than 3 times during the process that i thought i had bricked it. i may be permanently scarred.
There have been many times i have rooted other devices including the iconia that i went searching for more steps because it was too easy.
ya i have the Desire S too and waited for ages for it to be rooted, the Iconia only took me a few minutes, don't really see what the difficulty is, thought this was an old thread haha
ne too lol i was like...all i did was install an app, go to recovery, and flash rom ( give or take a few steps) and i did that the day i got it (sept 2011) and it took a few a mins, this thread confused the heck outta me lol

This is inbwrong thread sorry for my post all
I rooted my tablet right after I got it in May. Then when the 3.2 update came out, I went back to stock unrooted and ran that way until this morning when I realized I wanted to change my navigation buttons. Downgraded, rooted, installed CWM and flashed the rooted stock 3.2 and was back in business in like 20 minutes maybe. Would've been done quicker, but I had to pause to make some more coffee. Didn't even lose any of my data or apps. I don't know how you measure easy, but by my measure, its a cake walk. A cake walk where you actually win cake, instead of awkwardly shuffling around in a circle with strangers thinking that if you win it might all be worth it, only to have some snot nosed little turd walk away with the very cake you wanted, and you go home and weep gently into your pillow because you never win, and no one ever seems to see that all you want is to be loved, oh God, why can't someone just love you...sorry I digress.
lol i rooted mine like the first 15 minutes that it was out of the box. I don't like not overclocking

Back to the OT! Did Acer Kill the Iconia?
Here it is.... Plain and simple.... Acer is killing the the Iconia since they are taking their time to produce good accessories for it. Also, what were they thinking in giving the power adapter such a short cord?
Other than that.... I love my A500, and would not mind upgrading to a the Tegra3 version.

I think the battery indicator has a glitch that *Detection* has a temporary fix for. However, even partly broken, the ROM is fantastic. I would like to use it as a daily. I'm just not going to jump the gun on it. I'd like to see a little more in the configurable option department, like a reboot to recovery option in the shutdown menu. Removing the Phone.apk and Telephony.apk also. No real need for them as we stand. That's my 2 pennies so far. But, Paul has really gotten far for such a short time, and I'm excited to see where he takes it.

well, if you got a backup you can try the ics , as it can be done for daily use, but its not recomened. if you want to try make sure you got a working backup, also if you restore honeycomb after tested ics, you need to flash a HC kernel

Risky considering you have no nvflash recovery should anything go wrong.
If you find you have no root / access to CWM you would be basically screwed.
I would listen to your sensible you this time and wait, yes it is bad having to wait, but worse if you brick your tablet.
ICS is nice, fast, but that soon fades with the current suspend / wifi bugs, I would advise waiting
Agreed. I've been in plenty of situations where CWM has saved me and always restored without a problem. It's just a shame i am not able to see the progress as it is happening and I can't be one of those people in the dev thread saying any updates?

The main thing is the kernal. Paul uses a different kernal to get ICS to function more smoothly. In the realm of sbk2, my main concern would be that NVflash doesn't work... and if something goes wrong, you are left with a really expensive coaster. With the rate that Paul has put out updates, it should be no time until we see a daily out of this.

Asking for updates is like asking for an eta..don't do that. These guys are doing this on their own time, it is disrespectful to be impatient.
And fyi guys, i have a B70 if it roots with razor claw and can install cwm, and as long as you don't flash over your recovery you should be able to rescue any bad rom/kernel flash. I guess if my recovery went screwy i would be SOL but so far I've not had a problem. Be patient, and check and double check every step.
Did you wipe dalvik? Factory reset? Better make sure before you flash that rom and do an md5 before you flash any recovery to be sure it didn't corrupt in the meantime..if you are really careful, patient, and read a lot, and i mean A LOT, before you flash you can get away with flashing an sbk2 safely. If on the other hand, you've never flashed anything before, and don't know EXACTLY what you are doing, then i wouldn't risk it.
Paul's ICS is great progress, but unfortunately far from being just a novelty due to the bugginess and loss of functions. I played with it for about 5 minutes before I decided it wasn't ready for prime time and went back to revolver

In the realm of sbk2, my main concern would be that NVflash doesn't work... and if something goes wrong, you are left with a really expensive coaster. With the rate that Paul has put out updates, it should be no time until we see a daily out of this.

Btw it's kernel with an "e"

I played with it for about 5 minutes before I decided it wasn't ready for prime time and went back to revolver

about asking for ETA doesn't meen your disrespectall ful, look at all the ICS questions that asus got, its not disrespectful, you ask's for something that is good to know when you can be able to prepare to leave Honeycomb and go to ICS. but in this case Paul is almost alone working on this. and i can see that asking ETA when he does this on freetime will make it much more harder to set a date! SO asking ETA Isn't Mean. you really show that something is wanted and can give the OP both glad and angry moment's......
Anyhow. The Work goes amazingly fast forward, i wish i had his schills

You do realize asking Asus for an eta, when they are a company selling a product, and asking developers who are working for free in their own time, are not the same thing right?
Read the rules. It says pretty explicitly.. Do not ask for eta's.
Well the ETA thing was a joke simply because every third post in the dev thread is got an ETA. Don't let the lack of posts fool you I have been around the block a few times. Also if I hadn't been reading I wouldn't have known that it was not recommend to install on sbk2 devices.

Help me out..... where does it say no etas? Serious question.... thnx
I think what the last post referred to is when you pay for a service it's ok to ask them(ASUS) for an ETA but when devs here (Xda) do it for nothing more than street cred, fun, or cause they want to it is not cool to ask for an ETA.

Ok, it isn't as explicit as I thought, but it has been pounded into my head because it's been repeated so many times over and over..
Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1376759
And Here; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081035
OBKING77's video cites it here; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RzpixaIOwSg
This part IS in the guide (though not in the rules);
XDA-Devs is about developers & hackers helping each other and working together to get the most out of our devices by understanding them better than most.
XDA-Devs is not about helping everyone who wants a "Kewl bit of kit" make their phone better than the guy next to him.
Now do we go kicking users off who never contribute anything, NO. We tolerate it to an extent. Where the toleration ends is when these users start diluting the usefulness of the forum by repeating the same questions over and over again.

I've just read it so many times it's become a 'rule' in my head. Sorry I was not accurate when stating it was 'explicit in the rules'. But it is a matter of respect for the devs
I wonder if we could do a tally and see how many posts on xda are actually people asking for updates or etas? Probably be in the thousands if not more.
Anyways back on topic.... sorry about that i thought that the implication that it was a joke was pretty clear in the previous message.
So i do think i will try ICS out after i do my backups. I suppose as a trial it will be good.

Will this root method work?

I was going to try this, but I got worried that I would brick my new phone when I saw the firmware is different. Chainfire's method uses XXUAMD2 firmware. My Build Number is JDQ39.I337UCUAMDB. It is close, but not the same.

they want someone stupid to try it out instead of them and report their success or failure first lol
im sure most people dont even have this phone yet because its not out. Mine does not arrive till tommorow
I thoiught I saw a post in the Development thread that this method does not work - I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure that is the case, unfortunately. I have faith that Chainfire of someone will get us rooted soon enough - (hell, I don't even have my S4 yet - won't arrive until tomorrow
But - Unless I had seen someone else had successfully rooted using any method, I do not think I would even think about being the first one to try it. lol
How long before the AT&T source code is released? We should be able to get a work around once we have that.
This will be my first Android phone that didn't have root before it was released, and I've bought nearly all of them on release date, taken it home, and rooted it before doing anything! I won't be selling my SIII right away since it looks like I'll be using it until we get a successful root out of this sucker....
Getting mine on Saturday if all goes to plans, willing to help test as well! I have 60 days to return it if it breaks, hahah

Yea i can't officially switch till root. S4 just arrived. Will see if I can get some root on here.
Just got mine an hour ago. Apparently, thanks to AT&T, the bootloader is locked, which could complicate the root method considerably
