[Q] which ms2ginger zip do I download? - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
Im running cm7.1 rc1.5 on my defy red lens and have been for some time, but I want to make the switch to ms2ginger 3.0
I have the kernel update but I don't know which ms2ginger zip I need to download (this is for advance restore). I downloaded MS2GINGER3.0-RTM.zip from walter79's 4shared website but it doesn't look like the right zip. Can someone tell me which one to use.
Any help would be appreciated.

It is the right zip, however it is for upgrading from MS2 ginger 2.1.
What you could do is, get the ms2gingner 2.1 nandroid backup.
Boot into recovery, full data wipe cache/dalvik, restore system+data, boot, devtree and recovery. !! Reboot !!
For MS2 Ginger 3.0, boot into recovery, just wipe cache/dalvik and restore system. !! Reboot!!

Do I still need the gingerbread kernel?

3.0 rtm would be quite good but only if you unzip it first
Sent from my MB526 using Tapatalk

Well, I have another problem. This is the same with ms2ginger 2.1, 3.0 RC and 3.0 RTM.
Even if I unzip it, I CANT FIND ANY SYSTEM.IMG OR DATA.IMG. I can only see a bunch of .tar archives that I can't use?
So walter79 says to restore system-only, but I don't have anything to restore! Can someone tell me why no one else has this problem?

when you unzip your zip file you get something like ms2ginger3.0 folder. there are all that tar files in it. now put that folder in sdcard/clockworkmod/backup so that you should have sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/ms2ginger3.0/(and here are files like system.tar). i assume your phone is rooted and with cwm installed. restart phone. during boot when blue led lights up press "volume down" button immediately. enter custom recovery. "backup and restore", "advance restore", point at ms3ginger. should appear list of files to restore. do it one by one.

[Q] Can i install MS2Ginger over CM7 ?

Hi there i had a problem 2 month ago installing 2endint on my defy anyway i installed CM7 using the custom recovery, now i have CWM installed so i was wonder if i can install MS2Ginger over CM7 thanks
I've not had success with it. I usually have to flash a Froyo SBF before going to a Gingerblur ROM.

Yes, you can. However, after installing the CM7 zip, you need to flash this fixed sbf using RSD Lite.

what is this fixed sbf for ? and should i flashed it after i install MS2Ginger ? thanks
You wipe data in 2ndinit, boot into the flashing menu, flash fixed sbf, reboot phone ibto 2nd init recovery, advanced restore, boot, then system, then devtree, then data, then reboot

ok so this fixed SBF for CM7 in case i wanna come back from MS2Ginger to CM7 right ?
Yes, that's right. After you install the CM7 zip from clockworkmod, hold up button while rebooting and flash this fixed sbf using RSD Lite. Make sure you clear data and cache from clockworkmod after flashing the fixed sbf.
another question its maybe out of the thread but does it matter that i didnt use 2endinit to install CM7 or not ? coz i used custom recovery i mean is there any side effects ?
Yes, there could be some problems. You should install 2nd init, format data and cache, install CM7 and install the fixed sbf after that. Should work fine then.

[Q] [q] motorola defy plus 2.3.6

is there any custom ROM stable and 100% working, without any issues and please mention apps, steps, cautions step wise so that others could follow, read a lot of posts but all left me with doubts in the end, am fairly new to android so forgive me if this post is not worth. want to run stock sbf with custom rom possible i guess, ( installed 2ndinit for defy and my cam stopped showing preview posted as my first question. although uninstalled it and cam working now please help devz... i hope u will for sure. thx in advance

works on my 2.3. 6 defy+
I am currently using the latest CM7.2-Nightly for Defy+ with the camera and battery fix attached in that post. It is very, very stable and with the fix, the battery charges up to 100%.
Installation:
!!!Read all steps before you do them!!!
1. Copy the three files linked above and the CM7-Google-Apps to your SD-Card.
2. Root your defy. I used this method.
3. Install 2nd-init recovery:
3.1 Download the app SndInitDefy from here
3.2 Install and start the app. Press on "Install 2nd-init Recovery".
3.3 Choose "Latest Recovery"
3.4 Allow the superuser-request
4. If the LED is green now, you can reboot your Defy. Press Vol-Down when you see the blue LED
5. Now you should get into the bootmenu. You can navigate with the volume keys there. Choose "Recovery" and press the power button to select.
6. Now choose "Custom Recovery"
7. Choose "install zip from sdcard" and install the downloaded zips:
7.1 Install cm72-120127.0846-NIGHTLY-Defy+.zip
7.2 Install gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip
7.3 Install the fixes (the two other zips)
8. Now you have to do a factory reset. After that all your apps and settings will be deleted. If you want to keep them, you must backup the apps/settings first. You could do that with the app TitaniumBackup.
9. Choose "wipe data/factory reset" to do this factory reset.
10. Reboot the defy now. If you stil see the boot animation after five minutes, reboot the defy (I think you must remove the battery and put them into the phone again).
Now you should have a defy with CyanogenMod 7!
possible, in posibble?
188 2.3.6 motorola defy+ their full SBF will not work the root of the superoneclickk 2.3.3 not possible
WARNING!!!
The below guide is useless! It instructs you to download 2ndinit 2.0 which DOES NOT BOOT on Defy+ I have thus far killed 2 phones using it!!! Only use 1.4.2 no later. Thanks! =)

That's strange...
For me it works well, i installed CWM sucessfully on both 2.3.4 and 2.3.6 devices. I was using the original firmware (from factory) for the 2.3.4 device and at the second device i flashed a 2.3.6 DFP-139 sbf form droid-developers.org. After installing the latest recovery and removing the "2nd-init Defy" app, I rebooted the phones and everything worked fine.
When you start the phone, do you see the blue led then? If not, you don't have installed 2nd-init correctly. If yes, try to 'wipe data/factory reset' the phone (you should have a backup, this erases all your user data which is not stored on the sd card and all your apps). If the phone is still not booting, you/the 2nd-init installer have/has made a wrong change to the system partition.
Then you should try to flash a new 2.3.4 SBF (look here and also here) and try it one more time.

follow the above instructions carefully and you will have a cm7.2...then you can dual boot by selecting the preferred entry from the menu....

Bro even I have done this n times! In fact I had stock 2.3.4 which I upgraded to 2.3.6 by a full SBF flash and since then I have rooted using superoneclick and installed recovery many times and it works perfectly! The only issue however is that there are less frequent releases for 2.3.6 as compared to the Froyo kernel!

Hi,
Good to know new Defy+ are coming in India with latest updates! I too have the very same SBF in my phone. As you said rooting and all not a problem. No need to flash any specific SBF as such. A nandroid backup is recommended in case you want to come back to where you left before flashing! And if you want back warranty just flash the SBF with RSD lite(Walter's thread has the SBF and even I can give you the link if you want.).
For your second answer:
This SBF has BL6. So you cannot go back to any ROM or sbf which has a previous version. Thus, walter said about unability to flash MIUI or CM7. However, you can flash CM7.2 for Defy+ or CM9 for Defy+(By quarx). Just flash the CM. No need to flash any kernel. It worked fine for me. You can even try dual boot and that too works great.
Happy flashing!
thnx a tonne....I was wanting cm7 fr its completeness....n cm9 fr awesomeness.....thnx again....
Also....can u give a link to the best cm7.2 build fr us....?

Bro, dont speak from ignorance, especially when it can lead to others ending up in a bad place. The latest versions of 2.3.6 eg 4.5.1-134-DFP-188 can not be rooted by any currently known exploit, so you have to be careful when choosing an sbf to flash. See here for which versions can and can't be rooted.
There's even a whole thread all of its own where people are trying to root the latest 2.3.6 releases, here.

http://quarx2k.ru/cm7-nightly-defy+/ That is CM7 nightlies for Defy+ by Quarx!!
Followed the steps listed by Mister Ypsilon, on to my new Defy+ which used to run Motorola Stock with Motoblur. So far looks good. I will post further regarding the battery.
The only glitch that I faced after installing the ROM is that it always froze at the Boot Animation. I had to pull the battery almost 5-6 times and then magically it started to work. Boots within 10 second from the Motorola Logo.
Not sure if the battery pulls were because of something that I did wrong.
Thank you Mister Ypsilon.

[Q] update cm9 to cm10 2ndboot

I want to go from cm9 to cm10 2ndboot on my defy.
I think I've read the relevant threads about doing this and ask here just to get a last 'ok' from here...
I have downloaded the CM10-20121018 nightly and the update for it. So I unpack the CM10 copy the update over it and pack it again.
Then I'll do:
wipe data *sigh*
wipe cache and dalvik
flash cm10 2ndboot version
flash google apps
wipe dalvik and cache again
switch 2ndinit boot method to 2ndboot ( <-- is this ok. ? )
reboot
by the way, where can I see my 2ndinit version?
After entering the boot menu it says at the top of the screen: "Android Bootmenu v1.3.0 ICS"
Is this the version of 2ndinit? I thought it should be something over 2 ...
Thanks
Michael
Just flash the nightly and then flash the update. The nightly should automatically change the boot method to 2nd-boot.
In case anything goes wrong, make a nandroid backup first.

Thanks for the answer. Somehow missed that I can just flash the rom and then the update, no need to merge them before flashing.

Worked like a charm. I'm very happy with this version, great work.
Now I have to convince a friend of me to let me put this on his defy+ . He experiences random reboots and other bad things (camera not working, losing photos...) . I hope this goes away with CM10, allthough it maybe a hardware bug...

my next advice is to learn how to manage your own roms without goomanager. for the most part you can read the tutorials on the defy wiki page to install "2ndInit Recovery". then use the 2ndinit recovery to install twrp. from there you install 10.2/4.3 and enjoy. just make sure you know well how to do sbf flashes just in case you goof and softbrick your phone in the process.
plus you should be able to install goo manager once youve settled in with twrp.

You misunderstood me maybe. I never used Goomanager. The first time I did was like 2 days ago when I found out I can't install CM10.x with CWM v5, but v6 or TWRP, and tried to install TWRP from it. It didn't work. Also, the TWRP flashable zip won't install from CWM. I mean... It says it's ok and reboot recovery but nothing. Gwah I know all about sbf flashes in case of softbrick and all...
edit: im very, VERY familiar with cwm... never used any apk to manage my roms just 2ndinit to install.

I don't think so. Something is very fishy about my phone. very-VERY strange... I can't install cm10.x cuz' of no update-binary support in cwm v5, and i can't find a way to make TWRP work, nor can I find any CWM v6 install methods... srsly WUT EVERY OTHER stuff works as intended. everything. all roms before jelly bean. i need to make twrp work or a cwm v6 installation.

Only CM10.2 needs the new CWMv6. CM10 and CM10.1 should work.
Your phone seems to trolling you:laugh:. But seriously, as a last resort I would flash DFP sbf. Gingerbread isn't half bad (especially with MS2Ginger, which is really stable and is compatible with Green Lens too).

Well then it's trolling me 'cuz CM10 gives the same status 7 error. It IS trolling me. But i'm scared of flashing a DFP sbf. What if things go wrong? I won't be able to rollback then.
You can try to use twrp on gb roms by replacing the boot menu folder in system by that of cm10 or later. Try once with a clean folder, and once by copying over the existing files.
As for defy plus sbf, if you have a green lens, camera won't work on any gb except ms2ginger. In addition a battery patch must be flashed after every rom for full charging. For red lens only battery patch has to be flashed.
None of the above applies to cm10 and later.

If things go wrong, try a different SBF.

I tried replacing the bootmenu folder with different apps, but all got some "Operation failed!" or "Error with files" in itself, so I also tried to replace some of the files 1 by 1, they still failed. So that could be the reason why the zip won't flash properly... Maybe some safety option somewhere in CM9??? My phone can't seem to handle the recovery zips, only the 2ndinit apk. Very strange!
That must be done from recovery. I recall helping someone replace the recovery using a flashable zip because only a legacy recovery worked for him. I think it was zer0-gravity. Check my posts on that.
Replacing the recovery files with twrp ones in the zip I had made on that thread should with hopefully.
Also, your problems indicate file system errors, and I'll advise you to flash a different(higher) sbf, since that has in the past worked out well, for me and others. Beyond this point I'm out of ideas.

another fast question. i recover my phone using the JORDN_U3_97.21.51 method, after that i have to do a root, nandroid, then instantly flash a fixed sbf (firmware.sbf...). its cuz i got the phone 2nd hand, and he f-ed up smth upgrading to gingerbread or so... can it be the root of my problem?

Why do you need a fixed sbf? After rooting try directly 2ndinit. Don't restore nandroid. Also, root using framaroot since its much easier and faster. You can jump from 2.1 to
2ndboot directly.

Cuz' my mb525 got flashed a GB sbf accidentally, from which you can't downgrade (by its user before me), and you can only recover it from éclair via the method i linked. other sbf's wont work
Ok, so when you flash the first sbf, and root, what stops you from directly using 2ndboot at that point

It just won't install, with status 0 or 7.
But right now I grew tired of this problem and i will flash a DFP 231.sbf from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1542956
I will follow these steps. Can i do that? (MB525 Red Lens)
edit: 4.5.1-134 DFP-231 Retail.en.EU CEE
Yes. Flash that and root with framaroot.
Don't follow the guide for rooting, just flash dfp 231 , if it hangs on moto wipe data and cache from stock, and use framaroot.
Depending on eu or cee you've flashed, you may require a kernel to boot successfully with 2ndboot roms(otherwise you will just hang even after waiting a lot). It can be found in the defy custom kernel thread in General
Best of luck
