This is a brand new unrooted Mytouch 4G, so I suppose I haven't done anything wrong yet. =P
I tried the wifi connection on this phone, and it usually works great. But I later found out the it's not very stable. I carry this phone with me and walk around the campus, it doesn't always receive wifi signal like my iPad would always do. Also, sometimes even when it shows that I am connected, the internet based software such as skype will not work (making phone call without hearing any voice).
Is there a software/app that can help? Or maybe I should root my phone for a better version of operating system?
On the stock ROM and all Sense ROMs, there is an option under WiFi Settings -> Advanced -> Best WiFi Performance. Try selecting that and see if it makes a difference.

WOO! lol i found someone in the same boat as me...I go college as well and my ipad connects fine, but my laptop and phone (for some weird reason do not). Ive tried a whole variety of differernt rom and kernel combinations including stock, but nothing would work. I really really really wanted to stay stock on my phone because I like it so much, but it just wouldnt work. Then I tried the evil 4g HD rom with fauxs sense smartass kernel and suddenly wifi was working amazing! It connected as soon as I clicked turn on wifi and stayed connected throughout the day even though I was walking around campus. Plus the rom has sense so its not straying too far from stock! I dont know what the reason is, but you should give it a go and see if it works for you!
I finally determine to try your method. I can't find evil 4G HD rom. Did you mean Evo?

Hey All
Not sure who can help me here, but i am trying to upgarde to 3.2 which i have done with great sucess but every rom i try does not display either the wifi network i am connected to or the 3g network name or speed. It just displays (no service) when in 3G mode and nothing in wifi mode. is there a configuration i need to set or change in the config files??
Am running Acer_A501_1.309.24_EMEA_CUS7 as its the only rom (being the one that came with the device) that shows these notifications.
You'll find this is a common issue, as they port the roms mostly for the A500. Although the stock roms are more or less the same, the devs seem to only have A500's which means they don't/can't test them on an a501. So, they mostly leave that part out.
Sometimes, you can simply modify the "build.prop" file, and near the end, you can place a simple "#" on the line that says "wifi only". Usually I do this before I flash the rom (unzip and modify the system/build.prop using wordpad or notepad), then try the flash. This at the very least, opens the menus for network apn's. Doesn't mean it will activate the internal 3g if they didn't include the associated library files.
I've managed to play around the past day, and actually got signal strength on Revolver version 6. But no APN yet, so I suspect a couple files are missing from the rom.
Roms thay do work with the 501;
Taboonay ver 2.0. Also, after installing, I reboot again, and flash Thor's ver 3.5 kernel. Didn't have much luck with newer versions of both.
Honeyvillian from Richard Tripp. The earlier versions, not the most recent as I haven't tried yet.
Lightspeed,,,, I just didn't like it. Ran a touch wonky. Also have to use a patch for 3g.
can you please tell me how do i use 3g?just put the sim on?and if the tablet is bought from acer is it unblocked?

Well, this will depend if you have an ATT Acer 501. If it is the ATT model, it is locked to ATT network.
Usually you can tell when you start it, and have an ATT data widget. Or you can go to Settings, About Tablet, scroll near the bottom and look for the "Build Number". If it has ATT in it, well, it's a locked tablet.
Example : Acer_A501_4.402.03_PA_ATT or something similar.
Always insert the Sim card, with the tablet OFF. You might damage something if you try inserting it with the tablet on. The instructions specify this.
Normally, the tablet will recognize the Sim card, and by default will use the 3g network.
Hi all,
I'm new at xda forum, nice to see all of you.
I have new Viewpad 10s for a week and i got an issue on it. Since my first time i plugged my SIM card to this device until today i see the mobile network is not working properly. I already did the APN setting. Some times it does get internet connection (G,E,3G,H) some times it doesn't get any internet connection for a long time. i already try to disabled and re enabled the data setting but it can not make it work too.
Is it just happen with me or is there any one have same issue with me? is there any solution for this condition?
Welcome to the Vega Forum!
As far as i am aware this is a known issue. Vegacomb was not made for that tablet, it does contain drivers for 3g but not the ones for your viewsonic. There is a version knocking around called viewcomb. Of what i have read it has been ripped off from newbie5 work, Not cool!! But your choice to try it. I will not post a link as i dont approve of its use as its not been given the go ahead by rebel1 or newbie5 (or any of the other devs i have forgotten)

Hi!
If you're using stock ROM you shouldn't update your ViewPad 10s thru the Advent Vega website because I think their ROMs don't include the 3G drivers (I could be wrong).
You should update only thru the official ViewSonic site.
http://ap.viewsonic.com/my/support/tablet/
http://ap.viewsonic.com/my/kbase/article.php?id=256
http://ap.viewsonic.com/my/kbase/article.php?id=257
Hope this helps!
There is no "Advent Vega" tablet that has 3g, so the firmware does not have it. As yani2000 said, best stick with roms made for your tablet
all right mates, thank you for your suggestion...
Report back if your 3G connection would still be failing after the update.
Then I would recommend to try different SIM card (preferably on a different network) from your friends/relatives.
i have a 3G Viewsonic 10s running on VEGACOMBS .. my 3G works beautifully but if the tablet goes to sleep for a period of time, once i turn it on again, the 3G will not be able to get a signal.. only way to fix it is to do a reboot .. and it works again...
Try to re-activate data connection or go into airplane mode or re-search for mobile networks instead of rebooting your tablet.
The Vegacomb is still beta grade software and not all bugs have been fixed.
Sorry, but I can't help you more on that.
thanks.. beta grade...
i am one very happy user..

Last I saw, this didn't work on GB. Does anyone know if it works with ICS yet, and if not, do you guys think getting a bounty going would be a good way of getting it done? I'm not sure how hard it is to get working, but I do know that wifi calling on the G2 works with all currently released versions of android.

I've posted a new nightly to my github account, plus a kineto addon package. It should give working T-Mobile Wifi calling. Everyone who's interested in that, please install both (nightly first, then addon package) and give feedback.
Thanks Maniac. Using your ROM now, but I can't register on the tmo network using wifi calling.

It is working like a charm! This is now the perfect ROM for me.
I've uploaded a new nightly with the final solution: The Wifi calling application is shipped with the ROM, but disabled by default. In order to activate it, go to Settings -> Device settings and enable it there. If your launcher doesn't pick up the change immediately, just reboot.
Echo on wifi
I am able to make and receive wifi calls once again but everyone I call while on wifi tells me they hear an echo of themselves with a 2-3 sec delay. Using the nightly posted by Maniac on 03/21.

Can you re-try with my latest nightly? I've included an app that keeps Wifi at full power even if the screen is off (which obviously happens when calling due to the proximity sensor).
During calling you should see a notification that says something like 'Wifi high-speed mode enabled'.

I still have the echo problem on your nightly from May 22. Has the high-speed mode app been added since then? If so, I'll give your latest nightly a try tomorrow. Please let me know if there's anything else I can do to help with debugging this issue.

Yes. I added it in the May 29 build.
OK, I tried the May 29 build, and unfortunately the echo problem persists. :-(
It happens regardless of whether the screen is on or off, and regardless of whether the phone is on speaker mode. Changing the in-call volume does not affect the volume of the echo. Is there anything else I could try?
Edit: By the way, I have a nandroid of the stock T-Mobile USA Froyo, on which wi-fi calling works perfectly. I'd be happy to flash it and retrieve any files from it that may be needed to resolve the issue.

Unfortunately, I have no the slightest idea what could cause this echo issue, mainly because I can't actually try this stuff myself and am coding totally into the blue here. The fact that it happens on any audio output points towards network/Wifi, but I don't know Kineto well enough to know what the actual problem might be.
Can you share the system.img of that Nandroid with me? Maybe I'll give file comparison another try.

Sure, I'll send you a PM with a link to the nandroid. Thanks a million for working on this issue, and for all your work on CM7. Your builds are awesome!
I spent some time poking around in forums about T-Mobile wifi calling on other devices, and I noticed that the following files in system/lib/ are sometimes involved in getting wifi calling to work properly:
libcryp98.so
libcrypto.so
libganril.so
libkineto.so
libril.so
libril-moto-umts-1.so
librilswitch.so
I compared the files in the stock USA T-Mobile Froyo rom (on which wifi calling works perfectly) with the files in Maniac’s June 2nd build.
libganril and librilswitch are exactly the same in both roms (at least, their MD5 sums match).
libcryp98 is not in the stock rom at all, but there is a file in the stock rom called “libcryptoki.so”, which is not in CM7. I tried adding it to CM7, but it had no effect on wifi calling (the echo problem continued).
The remaining four files listed above are in both roms, but their MD5 sums do not match. So, I tried replacing the ones in CM7 with the ones from the stock rom, one at a time, with the following results:
libcrypto.so > phone stuck at boot screen
libkineto.so > wifi calling broken (Kineto app FC)
libril.so > no effect (wifi calling works, echo persists)
libril-moto-umts-1.so > no calls via network or wifi (invalid sim error)
I also tried replacing libaudiopolicy, libaudio, and libaudioflinger with the ones from the stock rom, as suggested here: http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/detail?id=4283#c75
Result: phone stuck at boot screen. I thought maybe the files were incompatible with gingerbread. So, I tried taking those three files from a Samsung Exhibit II stock rom (gingerbread with T-Mobile wifi calling), but when I put them on my DEFY it again got stuck at the boot screen.
I also tried replacing MS-MOTOJDN-FROYO-KNT20-02-A0-24.2.apk in system/app/ with the apk from the stock rom, since its MD5 sum did not match the one in Maniac’s build. However, this had no effect on wifi calling: the echo problem continued.
At this point I’m about out of ideas, but I’d love to see a solution to this problem and I’d be happy to test out any other ideas that anyone may have.

If the problem is network/wifi related, maybe using a different wifi module would solve the issue. I recall that several different wifi modules were tested back in the early days of cm7.1 -- perhaps one of those would be compatible with kineto wifi calling. I'd be happy to test that, if someone can explain how to replace the wifi module.
Another idea: maybe T-mobile's new IMS-based wifi calling could be made to work on the DEFY, instead of using Kineto:

Have a Gnex takju/makju with non-working wifi hotspot since 4.1.2 and still does not work on 4.2
Devices can connect to phone but wifi icon is greyed out and there is no data throughput
Rolled back to 4.1.1 and it works again, re-installed 4.2 and it does not work. Have opened issue with code.google.com
This is vital to me for work usage, but the failings of 4.1.1 on Gnex means that now I am downgrading firmware just to get hotspot working.
I was not going to commit to buy Nexus 4 immediately but if you guys can confirm that hotspot works for data throughput on the 4.2 that is installed on Nexus 4 I will order one tomorrow... I use android wifi only tabs (x2) for work on road so if anyone can test with laptop or android tabs I would be most grateful.
Thanks :fingers-crossed:

I don't have the Gnex - I'm coming from a T-mob G2 (Desire Z). Given the minimal RAM (512MB, 376 accessible to apps) and the fact that I was trying to run a 4.0.3-based rom, this has been a HUGE step up for me. I've unlocked the bootloader and rooted already, no issues there at all (well, not on the phone side - my laptop has ADB problems). Call quality is great, on-screen keyboard is nice though punctuation is difficult. I've been getting d/l speeds here in Seattle of 20ish Mbps consistently.
I'll mention this: I haven't wifi-tethered anything *but* my laptop yet. So, it worked (great) for that, but I can't speak to how well, say, a tablet would work.

I think it a fair assumption to say that if it works for one it should work for all. My, and others' problems, appear to be everything under 4.1.2 and 4.2 - nothing works - for me = laptop, desktop, and tabs. Everything works with wifi tethering under 4.1.1.
Fantastic feedback on the phone, many thanks, shall order in the morning.
20Mps downloads??? Holy moly!! Here in France we eat a lot of snails....I think the ones that manage to escape the garlic and butter sauce take sanctuary in the mobile cell repeaters, where they brainwash the mobile phone network into emulating their speed.... 4-5 Mbps if we're lucky and the wind is in the right direction

What app are you guys using to tether? I tried FoxFi (not rooted, yet) and it fails instantly every time I open the app.
I am also having Wifi tethering issues with N4. I can set it up and connect clients but I cannot get data through... I am going to a new network soon so will try again with that, if it still fails I will try a factory reset.

It is network related as 4.2 "flags" the fact that you are using tethering to your supplier.... some subscriptions/networks allow you to use the phone and it's services as a hotspot included in your subscription, some not... mine (Orange France) does not and they want an extra 39 euros per month, yes 39 euros!!, to allow me to use the tethering functionality.
You can try this script that you run thro terminal (Android Terminal Emulator, for example) from the market
su -c "iptables -tnat -A natctrl_nat_POSTROUTING -s 192.168.0.0/16 -o rmnet0 -j MASQUERADE"
Copy and paste it all into terminal and hit enter... then start hotspot and see what happens. It often works like this...You might find that the string "rmnet0" is not good for you, it depends on the carrier, so you will have to try to change it....
You can find the string that you need to use to replace "rmnet0" by doing this
Stop the Wifi, go on internet using your data connection and look at your IP. To do this in adb, enter "netcfg". It will show you something like : vsnet0 UP 10.95.95.175/32 0x000010d1 00:00:00:
So, in this case you replace rmnet0 with vsnet0 - ok?
Give it a go and let us know how you get on..
A factory reset will do absolutely nothing!!
Thanks a Tonne Stinky!!! I probably wont need to do this fortunately, I'm going with a new network where tethering is completely legit in 1-2 days. I am glad you posted this as I was starting to wonder if it was something faulty with my phone, never realised it would just be greedy carriers (though given their track record this should have been the first place to check!!!).
:victory:
If for whatever reason I don't move over I will check back with this!

Hi Stinky - I am in France too - using ZeroForfait (based on SFR network)
My SIM card in my wife's old Desire allows me to tether (so not an issue with the provider), but in my N4 this won't work.
I have been fighting with this all day, but no luck. I have tried a few different apps still nothing.
I tried your suggestion (although for me it was rmnet_usb0) - but still no luck.
For some reason it did work earlier (when I was trying a few different things and rebooting) using wifi or BT tether ... but now it is not working anymore.
When in tethered mode - I can ping each device from eachother - but no data flows....
I have seen some suggestions that Franco kernel might work .....

It's not in function of the sim card but the version of android.... I imagine the "wife's old Desire which allows you to tether" (aaah matrimony, you can't beat it :laugh is running an older version of android which does not flag tethering to SFR.
Try this one attached instead - remember it will not stick so if you reboot you must run terminal again and enter the commands again (maybe this was what happened to you earlier?)

Hi again - realised that my last comment sounded slightly pervy ... oh well.
In any case, I tried your alternative - and I get the following error returned from the terminal
sh: sysctl: not found
... and tethering still not working

Now tried a couple of different variations on your script, still no luck - and Franco Kernel no different
Exchanged mails with my carrier - they confirm that I should be able to share data
