Have you guys tried any dev work on linux mint yet? I am thinking of leaving Ubuntu... i hate the whole menu-window hovering issue.
If so, Any big difference?

Anyone out there gotten an actual Linux distro (aside from Android) running on one of these yet? I'm thinking of picking one up if I know I can get debian running on it for development purposes.
I found a few threads here:

That all talk about *maybe* installing Ubuntu, but not seeing anyone that has gone and done it yet. Any success in this area yet?

Im surprised to see no ones brought this up in the S5 forum or over at Ubuntu. Isnt there anyone working on multiboot rom or way to dual-boot linux from sd card on the S5? If not, why?

Didn't search the forum before posting?
There are any number of variations on multi boot from Hashcode's Safestrap here to Tasssadar's multiboot for Nexus. And related proprietary modes that resemble user profiles e.g. Samsung's kids mode.
Google had also announced that full multi-user profiles would be supported from 4.2 /4.3 forward. But they subsequently restricted the feature to tablets and haven't done much with it since.
But you are probably thinking more about booting into something like Kali linux There have been a few threads about that. And it has been done for the S4, Note, Nexus, etc. A bit soon to expect it on the S5 as it has only been released for a couple of months. And it's a new processor too. Do you want to develop it for is?

Thanks for the reply. I did search "Ubuntu" and "Linux" within the S5 forum but nothing but a firmware dump or porting popped up. I'm new to Android and a bit wary of risking device trying to piece together methods from other devices. I don't care about Kali, just Linux OS i can boot into, not needing to vnc into a virtual environment.
I still use my Nexus 4 happily and recently started modding the kernel a bit.
This led me to the question in the first hand, because it is possible to upgrade minor versions (3.4.0 -> 3.4.105)
The thing is, N4 uses google_msm 3.4 sources
shamu is pretty new, uses google_msm too but 3.10
I've tried by bluntly downloading shamu's kernel source, placing mako_defconfig in arch/arm/configs and updating the defconfig with make menuconfig.
As expected didn't work out, but i'm just a little modder cherry-picking stuff i'd like to have, so in reality i have no clue how to archieve that, or if it is even possible with some modifications.
I've also tried with the standard 3.18 Linux kernel too before, but got the same expected result.
Did someone actually tried this and got a bit further, is this something simply not posiible or too much work to get it going?
Hi guys,
I have the fire 7 HDX 3rd gen. Great tablet but think it could easily run android Pie. I have built a few roms for my phones an am still learning how to build.
My question is before i expend a lot of wasted time trying to port Pie to the HDX is it even a possibility ? Obviously the device drivers and kernel will need to be updated.
I have a few ideas on the kernel perhaps use an updated kernel from a current Pie port from a device running Pie.
The drivers am not sure if they could be coaxed into running under Pie or if I'd need to also find updated drivers again from a Pie ported device.
Am I wasting my time even considering trying this ?
Any advice or feedback on this would be much appreciated so thanks in advance.

The resource most familiar with porting custom ROMs for HDX devices is still struggling with Oreo. Undocumented kernel and specialized device drivers are the biggest challenges. Me thinks you would have your hands full.

Thanks for your reply and giving me an honest assessment on this much appreciated. I had an idea it would not be an easy task or else someone maybe would have done it by now.
It is a shame this is unlikely to happen since I believe the hardware is more than capable of running pie. Hell many devices with lesser hardware are running pie so the HDX should have no problems doing so.
Ohh well I will just enjoy using my HDX as is.
Thanks again RemusW.
ps. sorry for the multiple postings.
Hi, i recently found out that ubuntu has a version for phones. Is called ubuntu touch. Is there any possibility that any developer could port the halium kernel to this device? Im not an expert on porting things, so, if anyone could, it would be really great. i think it will give a bit more life to this phone
