[Q] No camera or youtube / video playback - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey all!
Just rooted my mytouch4g with cynogen 7. After setting up my phone I went to take a picture and it would load the camera software but the screen would be black. The camera options such as flash/menu were present but would not do anything if clicked on. I could see the preview of my latest picture I have on my sd card but when clicked on it would not do anything. If i click "back
" right away after launching the camera it will take me to the home screen. If i leave the camera app open for 5 seconds or more it will freeze and require a removal of the battery and restart.
I also noticed I cannot play any videos on my phone. I tried viewing some youtube videos and it would stay black and show the menu button but no video would play.
I have tried both of the following links and nothing worked:
apparently i cannot post links but i found a fix for other roms that people were having a problem as me and they did not work
I am running the latest cynogen mod and have tried to fix permissions.

Download a different rom (based on Cm7 if you want), clean wipe, flash and see of the problem is still there.

Could be a bad flash. As suggested, reboot into recovery, do a full wipe, wipe cache, and dalvik. Then reflash and see if it works.
Also, verify the MD5 to make sure that your download wasn't corrupted.

How do i "dalvik". Quick google search leads me to a vm for android apps? Is that what you were referring to?

You didn't fully wipe. Go back to recovery, wipe all user data and cache, wipe /system and wipe dalvik cache (not exactly necessary but you should do it every now and then).

I did a full wipe, cleared data, cache, system and dalvik and the camera and netflix, youtube is now working on cynogen mod 7.
When i installed the overclock kernel "AnyKernel_eMMC.Gorilla-Kernel-betaV1.0.zip" the camera/netflix, youtube stopped working. So the problem lies with the kernel.
What overclock kernel do you recommend on CM7 for the mytouch 4g since obviously the one I followed in the guide does not work.
Thank you all for your help

That kernel is way outdated, my friend. I recommend TDJ's kernel found here. Wipe cache and dalvik, flash the kernel, then reboot.

Icambriz, thank you so much for your help. I used that kernel and now everything works fine. My final question is, i noticed I do not have a option to record in 720p or take high res pictures, is there anyway I can get HD video back on since that is very important to the point I might revert back to stock or a different rom that allows HD?
Also, I have 2 other mytouch 4g's and was planning on rooting them. Do you think it would be wise to do a new full video tutorial "for dummies" on how to root the mytouch?
Thx again

There should be an option in the camera settings you just have to switch to camcorder mode and click settings. And we do not need another video, there's plenty around already, good thought though make sure to check the emmc of each before rooting!

You can take 5 mega pixel pics and record in 720p on cyanogen. Clock your camera app, don't hit menu. You'll see a circle looking icon on the right hand side. (settings icon) scroll through that and your resolution settings are in there.
For video, it's the second icon from the left. You can pick HD, which is 720p. I hope that helped.

[Q] HBO GO nogo on Gingerbread

Ever since flashing the Mostly Stock pre-rooted ROM HBO GO will force close every single time as the app's video player starts up after the little logo animation/music. I can sign in successfully and browse the content/add to playlist but that's it. I tried to restore the app and login first using MyBackupRoot but that didn't work (gave me an error about failing to initialize the player) so I tried it from scratch, even clearing the data from the app several times. Has anyone gotten it to work right and could anyone suggest something else to try?
Works fine for me on Legendary 2.1.

What kernel are you running? I'm running the "MostlyStock Rebuild" by xBTx and my HBO Go failed on Nubernel and Earthbound v1 kernels. Running Earthbound's v2 and above, as well as bbelos' kernels gave me my HBO Go back.
Works fine on Shadowkernel.

In all seriousness though, I flashed a new rom, clean gb, and the problem stopped.

I suspected the kernel might be the culprit (Nubernel .1). OK, next question:
As long as cache and Dalvik are wiped, is a kernel flash through CWM usually safe and not requiring of a total reinstall of everything?

I've never had a problem. Although too much flashing might leave residuals of previous kernel info (according to some conversations in Earthbound's thread), so he suggests a full Odin and reinstall of apps (not via Recovery but Titanium) just to make sure.

Ha. I'm not quite that confident. And a full nandroid backup, would it preserve the former kernel as well?

Yes. Use CWM 5.0.2.7. This preserves kernel. I do backup weekly so that gives me extra confidence to just flash.
Now running Mostly Stock Rebuild with Shadow Kernel 1.0.2. This issue is fixed and overall so far so good. Now to see how it behaves over time.

[ROM] Stock rooted 3.2.1 a501_4.483.01_EMEA_TMPL 20-01-12

A Present from Moscow!
Acer Stock HC 3.2.1 Acer_A501_4.483.01_EMEA_TMPL
Rooted
Busybox
Superuser
Data/app folder added with a couple of apps to check root
All stock ACER apps included
You know the procedure for flashing. If not, here they are again, as it seems some people don't know.
You MUST do the wipes and formats.
Installation:
Due to issues with Version 1.7 of recovery, you may get stuck at the boot animation. Highly advise you to downgrade your recovery back to Version 1.5. It seems that some things do not get wiped and formatted correctly.
1. Wipe User Data
2. Wipe Cache
3. Wipe DalviK
4. Wipe Battery Stats
Note: Optional Formatting.
If you really want to remove EVERYTHING in Internal Memory, at this point, go to Backup and Restore. Select "Toggle backup and restore of internal storage (/data/media). Enable this setting by selecting it. By default, it is disabled. Then proceed to the formatting steps. This will format the Entire Internal Memory when you proceed.
If you want to save all the things like downloaded files, apps, pdf's etc, then DO NOT enable this toggle, and just proceed to the Format steps.
Select Go Back, Goto Mounts and Storage
1. Format System
2. Format Cache
3. Format Dalvik
4. Format Flexrom
Select Go Back and select Install from Zip File (for those of you who refuse to update their recovery, select Install zip from SD)
Link Re-established.

Not sure what your definition is of a "full wipe", but instructions can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390860
I can guarantee you that if all you can get is to the boot animation that the problem is "pilot error".

Well, here's what I suggest. Look in my original post. I added the full instructions from my other rom.
It seems now days, the old 3 wipes just don't do a good enough job, you also have to do the formats as well.
(I thought I would be lazy and do only the 3 wipes last night, guess what? Stuck at boot animation) Did the full wipe and format, and it works as advertised.
EDIT: Guess what? This morning, I cannot flash anything, or I should say "hit and miss". Not even my daily driver. Connected to Recovery I believe.
Link re-established. Nothing wrong with the download.
If you have issues, downgrade your recovery back to version 1.5.
The issue with version 1.7 is "hit and miss". Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Well, I haven't checked the comgen1 yet (had to figure out the recovery problem first). Will root it and check it in a bit.
But, so far, I see 4 or 5 language supports are missing from the TMPL. Arabic and Aisian mostly. Also, on install the default is Polish (not a biggie as you can change it).
Other that that, it has a few extra files when compared to 3.2.
It seems I can get 1 or 2 extra sat's on gps when comparing to HC 3.2. But maybe because it's a clear day here.
Also, Acer included a couple new apps. One of them some 3d photo browser that force closes the first time you use it. Then it works normally, sort of. Seems it loses it's images off and on. Nice job acer. And, it's butt ugly. Wonder who the rocket scientist was that chose that app?
I'm not going to mod this one, but I will with the comgen1. Overall it runs good I think.

I am only aware of that Acer_A501_4.066.29_COM_GEN1 posted by Vache, but how did you figure 4.031.24 is upgraded to that one ?
Sorry. My Bad
I was thinking about the a501_4.510.01_Com_Gen1H that was leaked out yesterday.
I already rooted it and such, but it seems to be a "Demo" version from a couple of months ago. Not only does it have a strange installer script, but a strange directory structure also. 3g also is partly working.
So basically it's of little use.

I get one in a few minutes.
The issue, is the U.S. is shutting down all the file servers due to piracy. MegaUpload, MultiUpload (server end) Now all that's left are the slow ones. Took me 45 minutes to download today.
MD5 df253e3f8825197c08a1f0a0b8c24a81
Yeah, its a pain in the bum alright, some of the slower ones already have "removed or taken down because of copyrighted material" messages coming up (deposit files)... A couple have the servers offline - upload king and upload here.
This is gonna be a major pain in the bum if the close down or lock file sharing sites, and the sites themselves may end up locking things down and removing anything they see as copyrighted material, even if its not....
Took me 10 minutes to download an 8mb kernel... I'm gonna end up a bald man before I get this rom....
And then the download stuffs up and I have start ALL OVER AGAIN.... Then to add insult to injury I have to wait 20 minutes.....

I'm not quite that bad off (still have all my hair)!
I'm going to look around for some Russian servers. Or something. I noticed one other place, but I have to find it again. They'll probably shut it down also soon.
Next thing you know, they'll shut down GitHub, and all dev comes to a standstill.
Also, I noticed today, XDA is almost at a complete stop. And I can guess who's responsible for THAT!
It's running now, needed to format it to make it work.
Didn't have to format when i was installing v3.2.

Hate I might need to revert to stock to pick up ICS upgrade because the chefs can't share their flavours...

Well, I just know enough to make me screw things up
I found another place. 30 min download, But you have to give your e-mail for the link. Not really an issue. 3 more servers went down today.
Seems all that's left, is the small file hosts, and they're starting to limit file size.
I suspect, some serious **** will hit the fan in the next coming week, The US can't keep going on this crusade forever. Otherwise, there won;t be a site left except "foxnews" and Facebook.

No problem and glad it's running.
Not sure what is going on, but in past 6 months, it seems like we now have to format things. I didn't in the past, but now I must.
Well, it is 2012, so things change.
If you have issues with the Rom, it is pure stock HC 3.2.1. I changed nothing in it. Only SU and busybox and removal of the bootloader blob and recovery. So if a game doesn't run, there is nothing I can do about it. It's an Acer deal.
However, I do have one on my notebook, that has "0" acer stuff in it.

CM7 and MIUI for Dell Streak 5

Since the original CM7 thread were abandoned(or derailed on purpose) by the OP, I just want these amazing ROMs to be exposed to more people.
They are both using the DSC Team kernel. I have to thank the developers of these ROMs, as they are amazing!!!!
Developer: HPa
Both ROMs have working English interface.
Since the OP is hesitating in posting more information, so I did a little more digging myself. It lands me on the board with everything Dell Streak related in Korean.
They even have DSC/longhorn Rom discussion going on...
Their board:
http://cafe.naver.com/dellboom.cafe...=22849218&search.menuid=21&search.boardtype=L
Since their board uses referer check, I can't post a direct link to the CM7 thread. But any brave soul or for those who can read Korean (I can't) may give it a try.

English ver. Miui Rom by HPa
http://www.mediafire.com/?33jrxu2g5slwerq
Mini CM7 How-to:
1. Download and flash stock 407, you can find it in the General board. Read the guide by TheManii on how to flash
2. Download
http://www.mediafire.com/?ldlniz7wm6ha7s1
http://www.mediafire.com/?vprpvsarlcic7m6
and put them in your SD-Card
3. Flash Streakmod by Fastboot. Read the guide here
4. Without booting into the stock 407 rom, go in to recovery mode (both vol keys depressed) and flash the two zip files you downloaded.
5. while in recovery mode: Wipe user data, wipe user partition, wipe dalvik cache, fix permission. Reboot with both vol keys depressed.
6. Do a factory Reset while booting up with vol keys depressed. (dell factory reset method - first option of the four options)
Tips:
1. turning off boot animation in Cyanogenmod setting gives me a 20 sec boot up time with stock innerSD card, insane !!
2. It was found that Wifi-On will keep the device awake(on purpose), hence, battery draining. If you don't need wifi connection 24/7, you can use Green Power in market to override the wifi rule and only have it turned on when screen is on, and turns off the wifi automatically when screen is off. It's also customizable, that you can force wifi to stay on for specific time or if there's traffic

Works so far..... started fresh from 407 Olleh, flashed streakmod recovery, flashed CM7 then the gapps-gp-20110828-zip... from there I wiped data, cache, and fixed permissions, from there I factory reset and boot. So far so good I installed market and gmail. Camera, navigation, sms also works lost contacts but had that backed up, 10hrs running and counting again so far so good.
IM not having any luck. Getting stuck at the CyanogenMod animation after about 5 minutes. Which of the 2 downloads are you using?
SGS II I9100 from TapaTalk
CM7
I flashed (update-cm-7.2.0-RCO-DS-KANG-HPA-BETA7-signed.zip) do not wipe or clean cache.... flash (gapps-gs-20010828-signed.zip) next then wipe data, caches, fix permissions, do factory reset and let it boot up.
What are the advantages or disadvantages over using DSC ?
new roms
Are either cm7 or miui copyrighted?
Are there any problems with using these roms legally given they are korean aand obviously belong to their creator.
Does the creator give permission for these roms to be used?
I understand they are ports but would rather be safe than sorry.

Booted up just fine - looking it over and I setcpu to max for fun - gives quadrant of 2044 on quadrant advanced - no idea if that's for real or not but just saying... camera works..video camera too..
So so far so good..

why all of a sudden people start worrying about the legality of installing custom ROMs? like, if it's developed on xda it's legal and if it isn't it not? it's been published on the internet, just in a language different than english!

Yes very odd. The Gates/Jobs mind control really has gone deep.
For one thing, this rom is based on DSC in the first instance. Besides, isn't the Linux ethos to share and to give back to the community any enhancements?

I am using CM7, it is purely awesome, everything works , the only drawback I found is that it uses more battery than DSC , but I can love with that for now.
Just awesome jobs the Koreans.

Well: Camera works better, panorama mode "works", but still is a bit buggy... This was one thing i was waiting for, so for me it was worth it.
Maybe you could google the differences between 4.0.3 and 4.0.4, there seem to be lots, google talks about 100+ changes, but i dont know wich these are.
I would update, but its your choice, to do or not.
Havent run on bigger problems with this build
Here an inofficial Changelog:
Noticeably Faster
Android OS bug fixed (in battery stats)
Long-pressing on a blank spot on the last page of app tray bug is gone
New Radios. 3G/4G switching MUCH better. Don't even notice it changing.
Improved signal strength
New Power Menu. New from 4.0.2, familiar to those who have used a stock 4.0.3 rom. Screenshot here
PRIMELA03 Bootloader
Faster boot up time
Auto-brightness Functionality changed. Smooth transition
Holding down camera button now refocuses again
Multitouch issue seems resolved. Screenshot here
Autorotate is faster
Browser performance noticeably improved
Recent apps list opens faster
Miscellaneous camera UI changes
Increased volume
Keyboard fixes
Updated News & Weather app UI
Improved quick controls in browser. New when coming from 4.0.2. Present in 4.0.3. Screenshot here (Update: 02/05)
found it in this xda-thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481044

1. Since you are going from an ICS nightly to another ICS nightly and keeping the same kernel you need to wipe only Cache and Dalvik cache, before and after flashing (and this way your apps and settings will be kept).

I am confused as people refer to them seperately. incase they are.. tell me how to clear it.. i have read couple of other blogs/forum but still havent got a satisfactory answer...

Dont know what you mean with delete, you should do a full wipe in most cases.
But then you just install the .zip

The Dalvik Cache is, I guess the cache of the Dalvik VM, so of the virtual machine, on wich android is based. It contains program datas and stuff like that. compareable to the MFT(Master File Table) in Microsoft Windows.
i think there is the possibility to wipe the cache partition in recovery mode. when you use advanced, you can wipe dalvik cache.

[Q] Have I been flashing correctly?

Hey guys!
This is my first post on the Nexus 7 forum so if this is the incorrect place to ask such a question, please tell me!
Basically, I wanted to make sure that I'm flashing my roms correctly. Specifically, I've been on a flashing binge and installed Smooth Rom, Paranoid Android and Liquid Smooth all after one another in the same sitting. My flashing process, using clockwork mod, begins by wiping all of my data and cache -> Rewiping the cache (this probably isn't needed) -> Flashing the Rom -> and lastly flashing gapps. I'd be very thankful if someone could tell me if this is a clean flash.
Also, I've noticed from other users on the boards for these roms that they're getting much higher benchmarks. For example, Smooth Rom with the Motley Kernel, one user mentioned that he got around 4800 on the quadrant benchmark which is much higher than what I've gotten even by fully overclocking. That's one of the reasons I wanted to make sure I was flashing correctly. Incidentally, I also seem to create a new set of folders on the Nexus 7 after flashing each Rom. For example, I have on my internal storage the usual set of folders (Alarm, Android, DCIM, etc...) but then I also have folders named legacy and 0. Within 0, there is a whole new set of Alarm, Android, DCIM, Downloads, etc... And within that subset of folders is another 0 folder with more of the same folders. So you get the picture. That doesn't seem right to me since eventually I'll have an outrageous amount of folders, haha.
So yeah! If anyone could tell me whether I flashed correctly and maybe why I seem to have those problems, I'd very much appreciate it!
Also, I'd like to note that coming from the HTC Vivid forums, it's a breath of fresh air to see such a dedicated and organized forum! Thank you!

if your roms are flashing, then youre flashing correctly. generally you want to wipe data only if going from one rom to a different rom. but if only updating the same rom, just flash your rom without wiping anything. no need to wipe dalvik as it gets wiped when you flash the rom.
what recovery are you using? i thonk its only cwm recovery that keeps adding a 0 folder every time, no such issue with twrp recovery.
benchmarks, its about how you set up your device, and how you actually benchmark. you should benchmark at highest cpu/highest cpu, as to not allow your device to scale. if you allow your device to scale, you dont actually know what cpu speed is being benchmarked. btw, 4800 on a quadrant is low. anyways, benchmarks shouldnt matter to you(to a developer they might matter though), what should matter is how it feels and runs for you.
I follow that same routine, but have only been successful in one flash, and after trying to go to P.A., now I can't get any to boot correctly. I have maybe 4 ROMs to try from, but all day, only the one worked. LiquidJB , I think. I really wanted PA though, cause thats whats on my phone.

did you wipe data before flashing the new rom?
Yes. I always wipe cache and dalvik, before flashing, and I flash the rom then gapps using twrp. At this point, I'm stuck at the Google screen with one, and PA says setup stopped when I load it.

Man I had at least a half dozen good responses to this topic - but my better judgement stopped me.

Yes. Factory reset. Unfortunately, I've now wiped the sd card (internal) so I'm trying to flash AP using a zip on my laptop with Nexus Root Toolkit v.1.5.5, but now that I tried, iss that the rom I managed to boot still has an error that the setup program stopped, and the error keeps coming up, keeping me from entering debugging mode... guess i have to do a flash stock + unroot and start fresh....

Well, mean, I had downloaded something like 5 Roms. Might it be that rooting changed my boot version or something? Not sure what the boot version changes with the N7, on my phone it's pretty important.

So, is there any fix for this strange folders "legacy" ans "0"?
Hey!
Sorry for not responding sooner. University applications can be so time consuming. Thanks a lot Simms22! You've been a great help. Since then, I've cared less about benchmarks and more on the fact that the Nexus is freakishly fast with SmoothRom.
I haven't fixed the legacy problem but I'm assuming (and I could definitely be wrong with this) I could just delete the extra folders seeing as they technically don't have anything inside of them and afterwards just switch to TWRP. Shouldn't be that difficult.
