Ok, after playing and tinkering with XXKP8 with 2 days guys, i think its my duty to post what i have done to make the whole experience as stock as possible and as light as possible...
Battery life: i'm achieving about 5-6% drain per hour
Bugs (not too major, all livable with):
Contacts crashes occasionally (2 times so far... havent been able to replicate the bug effectively)
only 3G is active.. no H or H+... (will try n figure out y during my free time at work)
settings>app>running will cause an FC when trying to access it while there is an app that is not responding... (ie an app jus crashed and you are trying to terminate it)
home wallpaper scales wrongly when using single screen mode... the one for extended mode works well though..
Brightness setting n color setting in browser doesnt stick.. minor issue anyway...
High cpu usage with Facebook (not sure why though)
Features:
Stock AOSP ICS launcher (not trebuchet, stock from AOSP)
Working faceunlock (WARNING: BATTERY DRAINER)
ICS keyboard (cos sammy's one sucks)
Sammy bloatware + unstable apps removed (as much as i could, still unsure of some new apks that pop up inside)
Old bootloader is used, so that you can still use the jig to remove the pesky triangle or reset your counter
Being able to see emoji in sms or contacts
This is my routine for flashing KP8 (you are able to get the files if you search, but i will put up links and thanks when i'm free):
Flash XXKP8 in ODIN, let it reboot
Put the phone in download mode again and flash the old bootloader, let it reboot
Flash Chainfire's CF-Root kernel for KP8, reboot and let it do its rooting magic.. (you might have to replace the busybox cos TitaniumBackup is so damn pesky about busybox)...
Shut down the phone and put it into download mode WITH THE JIG... viola! counter = 0..
Flash the original KP8 kernal (optional)
DONE!
Removed a bunch of apps.. If you need some of them, dont remove it.. but here's what i removed which i dont need:
AccuWeatherDaemonService.apk
AnalogClock.apk
ApplicationsProvider.apk
AxT9IME.apk (Sammy keyboard, please install another keyboard before removing)
BluetoothMap.apk (this is MAPServiceSamsung that keeps appearing... causes a lot of FC all the time...)
BluetoothTest.apk
BooksTablet.apk
ChocoEUKor.apk
ChocoEUKor.apk
ChromeBookmarksSyncAdapter.apk
DSMForwarding.apk (Seems to be something to do with pen input for Galaxy Note as read from a china website.. removing it will cause the pen input to be out of calibration..)

Here's what I added or modified to get things fixed:
Stock AOSP ics launcher (with 3 screens only cos too many widgets = serious battery drain) from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1369721&page=1
ICS keyboard from http://www.multiupload.com/GOO35VU5KT and place it in /system/app... the other dependencies are already present (lib_jneime.so or something in /system/lib)
Face unlock fix (credits go to codeworkx and his team), but i couldnt find their fix page, i only found this page with an active link to download: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20937281&postcount=11
Old bootloader can be found on IntraTech's thread at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
I replaced the original DriodSansFallback.ttf with this one to to enable emoji viewing throughout the system (cos i like to put hearts with my gf's name, happy? ).. u can find the emoji enabled font here: http://www.multiupload.com/I7BICBXUV1 and you place the file inside /system/font/
Other points to note:
Gallery3D.apk controls the lockscreen wallpaper.. removing it means that your lockscreen wallpaper will default back to the original one... However, you can still use it in conjunction with the Stock AOSP Gallery2.apk from ics... just remember to use Gallery3D.apk when doing wallpaper choosing...
I tried to use AOSP Mms.apk on this rom, but it doesnt work.. causes FC... you can view the threads list and open the app.. but when u try to view into the threads, it will FC... sending sms with AOSP Mms.apk also will cause FC... better stick with Sammy's poor implementation of Mms.apk...
You can access the notification bar from the lockscreen IF you set your lockscreen mode to "Slide" only.. it will not work if you set ur lockscreen mode to "pattern" or "Face unlock" etc... I would say its pretty handy and is almost quite iOS like....
Final closing words: I feel that this rom is very usable with small quirks that any user is able to live with... the occasional freezes with contacts can be irritating but they are not that impactful and a reboot will fix it... i'm currently deploying it on a daily basis (for work and personal) and so far so good...
EDIT: i cant seem to get MTP to work... even though i disabled USB Debugging.. so maybe someone can shed some light on how to get it to work... for now i'm jus using bluetooth to transfer my files...
EDIT 2: Added emoji capable font to the list
I think usb isnt working because you removed mtp application?
Yeah, my mtp works fine. Didn't remove anything. =)
Ah, yes yes... i notice it now... u r right... i will go add it back and see if it works... cos usb storage doesnt work anymore, we have to use mtp to get it working...
EDIT: ok, i restored the MtpApplication.apk and that got Android file transfer to detect the phone via MTP... however, the AFT app is unable to see the contents.. i suspect there is more stuff to it... well.. for now i am jus happy doing bluetooth pushing or adb pushing... haha...
Can run Viber?
Nope, viber doesnt work... FC on start....
Simply download Bezke's ROM and most of these issues disappear. Also, his ROM is almost completely devoid of Samsung apps. No stuffing around removing them.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1393569
Also, although the phone only shows the 3G symbol, speed tests I've done clearly show it can download at H/H+ speeds. Stock ICS does not have a H+ symbol anyway when working (only H).
In other words, it may only ever show 3G, but H/H+ works just fine.
MTP works perfectly on Bezke's ROM also.
To fix the brightness setting in the stock browser, simply open it, press the menu button and select 'Brightness/colour'. Set your desired brightness.
what i'm offering here is jus a view for ppl who dun wanna install custom roms and just want to tweak their own stock KP8 to their liking... i'm not offering a cooked rom here, i'm jus offering knowledge from getting like 30 FCs in a day tweaking and testing what works and what doesnt...
as for the browser, once u kill the process and start it again, the settings are resetted.. so the brightness n colour settings do not stay through a reboot or termination...
or instead of doing all of that above just wait for the official build

calendar is not working and some other apps crash...
this is not working...
Calender DOES work by simply replacing the calender.apk file in system/app with the one posted in Bezke's thread.
What other apps crash?
If you removed MtpApplication.apk.. MTP will not work

I have reflashed a new theme to my phone. a comp theme with a few of my own additions (icons only). Since then i don't have autorotate anymore- in any apps- steel, chompsms, dxtop- none of them autorotate anymore...... i downloaded bubble from the market and it won't calibrate.....
When i go to droidsans it says bad version for autorotate status and enable and disable bad version as well..... if the accelerometer was broken it wouldn't say bad version would it?
I really don't want to do another wipe.... i might just have to live without autorotate until the next JF version comes out (hopefully with cupcake )
Any suggestions?
I had to do a wipe and reflash to get mine working properly again after DroidSans bit it. But, before that you might try something simple. Uninstall the app, delete the app's data
(rm -R \data\data\droidsans.android.DroidSansTweakToolsAll)
and then re-download and install it. I haven't tried this so no guarantees but it seems like a natural place to start.
Good luck!
Hi,
Today I'm going to talk about how I make my stock rom fast (Who care about what I'm using? Well, keep reading if you want to know) and tips for using apps, so let's get started.
1. You need to clean up all the junk apps in your phone. (Everyone know that ) Here is the extensive list of junk apps in our stock rom:
There are 73 useless apps!!
data\app\
com/afl.seucom.view-1.apk
come.sonyericsson.ia.uefalauncher-1.apk
com.wsandroid.suite-1.apk
org.microemu.android.se.appello.lp.wisepilotse-1.apk

2. download xperia s app v2
3. Remove: system\app\
Calculator.apk
SemcCalendar.apk
SemcDeskClock.apk
4. Don't flash xperia s app! Use only:
Calculator.apk (better UI)
SemcCalender.apk (better UI)
SemcClock.apk (better UI & more function)
SemcNotes.apk
Find SystemUI (notification bar with quick panel) that suite you the best and flash or use mind.
Why not flash all xperia s app?
Phone and contact is fast already (Xperia S phone and contact is slower)
Home (much smoother with stock launcher = laggy with Xperia S or Modified GX)
Messaging (good enough)
Gallery (use stock gallery for Bravia Engine, AOSP gallery for speed)
Music (Walkman use too much space in system and it's not very useful)
5. Best Launcher?
-Stock launcher
-Nova launcher
-Apex launcher
6. Best app?
-AOSP gallery (good look, pretty fast)
-Quickpic (build for speed)
-Google Play Music (free and clean UI)
-Poweramp (best sound quality and nice UI)
-MX player (easily the best)
7. Important
*Flash new Andreno lib
*Flash emoji font enabler if you want to view emoji
*If you use social app, try to move it from data\app to system\app. That way, you will free more space in internel memory.
Why? You're not gonna remove it because you use it everyday. There are alot of free space in system\app\ so why not use it.
*Go to settings - developers otions - window animation scale .5x - transition animation scale .5x. (I'm 100% sure that you will feel that your phone is snappier)
..................................................................................... Backgroud process limit at most 3 app (I'm sure that you always kill apps after you used it, so set it to 3. That way, you don't have to kill all the time) (remember to set it after reboot)
8. Uninstall unused app or once a month!!
9. Don't even use tweak (Personally, I don't see any differences)
10. Press thank if you think it's helpful.
Look at the attachment! I took a screen shot after reboot and kill some process (you will be impress)
Also include my modified systemUI.apk (If you like)
I think a brief description of each apk would be useful for some users in case they remove something they want to keep.
Also, don't the oma*.apk files let you download Internet/MMS settings from your provider? Or have I got that wrong?
Oh and on the arc 587 build Sony fixed the Calendar widget to show all-day events which you will lose if you flash the Xperia S v2 version of Calendar.apk - I've had this happen to me before.

in fact, is the description of the users delete files or even what it takes
good thread, i personally didnt remove stuff which normally you do not see running on services. theres no harm in keeping them like widgets and others which doesnt really make your phone slow (unless you use them) and you keep your rom as close to stock as possible. ofcourse unless you need some system apps space, which then you can use to transfer market apps to system apps to create more data app space.

Oma is not very useful for me because I only need to fill 3 line in order to get internet work. I forgot about calendar since I rarely use Calender widget.
Hey OP,
May I know how many user apps installed on your device? Helluva lot free ram you got there.. That way the android system can allocate more memory to the most used app imo..
Nice share dude

You should note there, that this is ICS only.
Xperia S apps will not work on GB.
And yes, I use rooted (personally edited and tweaked) 4.0.2.A.0.62, because ICS is fully crap.
how to move aplication from data/app to system/app?? because i got error when move it.

That time maybe 10 because I just flash the stock ROM. It is often 190 - 210 after a fresh reboot. If you kill some app that run in background like some Google services you will get about 210+

If you use PC companion to repair your device, you need to flash .431 kernel, root and flash .5... kernel again. Or unlock the boot loader, put ADV stock kernel and flash root by CWM. Repair your phone with PC Companion will hard reset and reflash your phone firmware. So you need to root again.
Very good tips!
I followed your thread and this one http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1089470
Now my Arc S is working super good and I'm very pleased.
I just unninstaled the Task Killer because I don't need it anymore, everything is working perfect :good:
Thanks for this!
can work on GB base stock?
Hi everyone,
After flashing a new ROM for my Nexus7 (CM, PA, etc) I want to avoid installing the standard gapps zip with all the Google software, but instead I only want the Play store.
I have searched the XDA forums and I struggle to find anything that precisely solve this issue. It seems that the general consensus when it comes to minimal systems is to install everything first and only then remove the bloat either directly from the shell or via TB, sometimes proceeding with trial and error.
Is there any way, or anyone willing to detail the exact dependencies needed for the Play store apk to work when installed on its own?
Thanks!
What's the problem in manually deleting the unneeded Google apps that you are not going to use and live happily ever after?
Of vourse if you change ROMs often - that might be a trouble, but if you intend to stay with one and only ROM - then I guess it shouldn't be that hard, right?

Not so much of a problem in the sense that it is blocking me, there are however some points that motivate me in knowing how to do it properly, namely:
I have a general Interest in how the interdependencies between the OS and Google apps is actually working. I've been using GNU/Linux for more than 15 years and I grew the habit to like to know what I am installing on my machines.
Frequent ROM updates make manual removal of items quite inefficient. Maybe a backup app could help here but that feels clunky and has the risk to introduce quite some mess when the system receives major updates that would break the backup.
The time to go through manual removal though trial and error is possibly the same that it takes to start this thread, bump it and hopefully gather enough interests so that more people will benefit from it.
I also reacted in other topic. Somehowe i could not react here but now it does.
Not my own idea, but it did work for me on my desire s. Open up the zip and read the next:
I have made a minimal install sufficient to get Contacts and Calendar sync + Google Play.
Then copy with a root explorer and set permissions to 644 of:
GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter
GoogleContactsSyncAdapter
GoogleLoginService
GoogleServicesFramework
Phonesky
Later installed as a regular apk Gmail2 and GenieWidget

Thanks for the hint!
To get the Play store working I only had to install Phonesky, GoogleServicesFramework and GoogleLoginService.
Now I am trying to figure out what is needed to get the quick settings menu. The latter only appears when the gapps are installed.

Could you mention the details of how you got the store working? Eg, where did you download the service files from and where did you copy them in your phone.
Thanks

As instructed, you download the gapps zip, remove the unwanted apks, and then flash in recovery.

I have a PA 3.1 ROM that shows the quick settings without GApps. However, the settings don't appear using a swipe down or through the button in the navigation area. They appear specifically in the expanded desktop mode only. Not sure why, but it doesn't look like an issue related to GApps. Let me know if you were able to validate the link between GApps and quick settings though.

Hi OP
I had been wondering why I had not been able to get the quick settings (the tiles in the status bar) to appear.
Btw, I'm using Rootbox on my Galaxy S3 (GT-i9300).
Your comment above told me that something from was gapps missing, so I installed the full gapps package and the quick settings work.
I reset/wiped my phone for further testing...
Long story short, I discovered Google's Setup Wizard was the culprit. Once I had rebooted and completed Google's setup wizard my quick settings tiles started working. I have no idea why this affects the tiles
GoogleLoginService was required for SetupWizard. I removed both afterwards with no problems.
Sorry for bumping an old thread, I was searching for info on the play store when I found this thread. Doubt I would have found this info otherwise.
Thanks for the bump, I gave up eventually, but what you found out is great. I'll give it a try!
These days I'm also trying to figure out how painful/feasible it would be to simply not use any of the gapps and just rely on alternative repos such as F-droid.

Any ideas on what the equivolent to Phonesky will be in the list above?
Phonesky, GoogleServicesFramework and GoogleLoginService were enough for < cm 10.2
But with android 4.4 cm11 , it doesn't work anymore.

Hi, im just a newbie here but i just want to share my experience in installing playstore.apk and you're right. Its trial and error.
At 1st, i zip signed the playstore.apk and tried to install it in cwm recovery. Yes it was installed but when i reboot my system, it pops up a toast that playstore stopped. i pressed ok and it pops again everytime. 1st failure
2nd, i tried to put the playstore.apk directly in the device/system/priv-app folder then install it normally. it was installed again but when i reboot my system, it crashes again. 2nd failure.
then here is the 3rd and final one and i said to myself that if this will not work again, maybe playstore.apk isnt a stand alone app. so here is what i did. i put the playstore.apk file again in the device/system/priv-app folder and this time i renamed it as "Phonesky" just like in stock roms. i just leave it there exit the file explorer then reboot system. And suddenly, it works and till now, it still works. Maybe it was luck but i'm just sharing my experiences. Im not saying that it will work 100% but maybe give it a try then. But make sure that you already back up everything. Thanks and God bless.
Hi guys,
I have installed Cyanogen 12 on my Wiko Darkmoon do set myself free from Google and I am happy with that... But unfortunately I still need to used Google Calendar (because my wife does not want to change so far and we are using shared calendar big time).
I don't want to install gapps but I am ok to install the minimum apk to have Google calendar sync working on my phone. Based on what I red on that topic, I came to install (may be not in this order) :
GoogleServicesFramework.apk
GoogleLoginService.apk
GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk
Unfortunately, when trying to register a Google account, I get the following message (translated from French, maybe inaccurate sorry) : " Impossible to connect. A communication problem with Google servers occurred. Please try later." with a next button leading always to the same message.
I cannot figured out if something is missing neither if it is possible to do so. I used adb logcat to get some log but I am not familiar at all with it but maybe the answer is in this part :

May be this is not the right topic to post that but this is the closer I have find.
I have a Defy which is on a custom ROM. I bought a Defy+ as a backup but decided to use that instead and try to run it on stock ROM. It was fine until I put a few of my apps on it and it became really sluggish. In the end I rooted the Defy+ and removed some of the stock apps by renaming the corresponding apk files as bak in the system/app folder. This appears to have sorted the problem and the phone runs fine.... except that I appear to have lost the music player. I installed another music player - which worked but conflicted with my lock screen so I wondered if I could get the stock music player back. I've tried renaming likely suspects back to apk from bak but nothing seems to have sorted it (and none of them look too likely anyway). The list of those renamed are

Are any of these stock player related?
The only other thing I remember is looking up TuneWiki when I was doing the cleanup but it doesn't appear on the above list... so I don't know where that is.
Any help appreciated! Thanks,
Take a backup and flash the corresponding sbf. Or try downloading a stock system nandroid for your system version, and get the player apk from there

Thanks. I was hoping not to get into the flashing and restoring business again (I know that's what this forum is mainly about though) and wondered if it was a simple matter of one of the above files being put back to an apk or just putting an apk in the system/app directory. I guess the latter option you suggest may be the easiest but I don't know what the player apk is - I am pretty sure wouldn't have renamed anything that looked like it was a player apk in the first place
Running out of internal storage for apps on my ZTE Blade MiniQ running android 4 .2 .2 I rooted it using Kingroot and then used Titanium backup to delete bloat ware.
BUT I selected something by accident but thought I'd managed not to delete it - now I think I must have! :crying:
I use google calendar sync'd with business calendar on my phone - it shows no calendars available.
I've installed the google calendar app - but it says my calendars can't be displayed cos calendar storage has been disabled - there is link to enable in setting - app info flashes up and then settings stops working.
I've tried deleting and reinstalling accounts, even a factory reset - nothing is working.
Have seen an old post about this but the link to 4share is no longer working
Has someone got a ink to the right file - and can tell me how to get it back on my phone I'd be extremely grateful
(I did delete lots of stuff like google play newstand - but think that should be ok - and no I didn't back up - cos I am an idiot! -or rather was only planning on getting rid of bloat ware)
The calendar is the one of the main things I use on my phone ....
1.download stock rom for Q mini from official ZTE site
2.extract this from ur stock rom:
-CalendarImporter.apk
-CalendarImporter.odex
-CalendarProvider.apk
-CalendarProvider.odex
3.copy/paste it in system/app and change permissions to rw r r
4.reboot
