Hello everyone,
I have just ordered one of the Dev phones and am anxious to start playing with it.
I had a question that I thought some people here might have some experience with. I do currently have T-mobile as my cell provider. I planned on just putting the sim from my old phone into the new to transfer over my service (I would like to use the phone while I play with it). I started thinking about this after browsing around the forums and I had a few questions.
I was wondering what T-mobile actually does/adds to the firmware before they push it out to the G1 phones.
I figure someone here has T-mobile service and a dev phone so I was also curious what T-mobile "features" might be missing or might they try to block? What about that Favorite 5 plan, I am sure they have to add their own code to the firmware to allow it to support that, so I am guessing that option is already out of the question.
Aside from the unlocked part of the phone is the firmware on the dev phone any different than what comes standard on the G1 (I guess minus the T-mobile parts)
Well this is my first post and I wanted to thank everyone for their time
The set of applications that are included on the ADP1 out of the box are similar to the set of apps provided on the UK version of the G1. In particular, it's missing such goodies as the Voice Dialer, the Amazon MP3 store, and the MyFaves software. Additionally only the gtalk provider is supported in the IM app.
From http://www.gotontheinter.net/content/android-developer-phone-1
If you want the Amazon MP3 Store you can extract it from any G1 update file. If you want the Voice Dialer, extract it from JesusFreke's modified ADP1 build, or just install his modified build.
I am a noob in the Android community, but not to forums of this like. I have searched everywhere for my concerns, but found nothing but post with the same questions and no answers. When I do find the answers, they all seem to revolve around the GSM version and not the CDMA. All the solutions seem to be only for phones rooted (GSM.) PLEASE this IS NOT a revision of the "CDMA Sub-forum Request" thread, but a unified list of what I observe to be issues with the CDMA version of the HTC Hero. My observations are based on experimenting with the Hero and also other threads, which coincide with my observation. I am also aware that 1.6 may fix most of these issues, but 1.6 where you at? As a former WM Mogul/ Touch Pro user I am used to quick fixes with "cab files." From what it seems, I don't think Google likes this type of approach, cause I haven't found any of that sort. So to begin:
1) Bluetooth - Though stereo headset connects, it doesn't connect automatically when I turn it on. I have searched, but is there another way to just turn my Bluetooth and not have to download a toggle or go in to settings to shut the bluetooth on the phone off and on? Is there a tweak to make this connection to go faster? 3 times with me and numerous times with other CDMA Hero users I know have dealt with issues where it won't connect or it would connect, but in 5min.s
2) Notifications - This one is for the users who want a tad bit more privacy. I downloaded ChompSMS (which I recommend,) but why do we have to download an application to simply make it so no Notifications show up on the front of the lock screen. I guess you could say I am a private user who doesn't want to use a lock code. I tried shutting off Notifications, but it completely shuts off notifications. Is there any sort of tweak that will allow notifications to alert ONLY through sound and vibration and show up on the notification bar without the number and message?
3) Movies - I know Google hates AVI files so I downloaded a converter for MP4. I know this is 1 thing that 1.6 is said to fix, but does any one have a fix for this Choppiness or are we doomed till 1.6 comes out?
4) Applications - Alot of Sprint junk (need I say more?)
5) YouTube App - How do we keep it at High Resolution?
6) Who are the major Players in hacking this phone? - For WM I could name many from Mighty Mike to Psyki. Who can I run to for this CDMA version of the HTC Hero? Tried to search around, but found people like myself asking questions as opposed to people giving answers. I guess cause the community isn't as big
7) Scrolling - Is it me or is there some choppiness when scrolling through the phone. Now the phone is smoother than most WM devices available, but I see the stuttering on the scrolling and some of the transitions of the phone.
8) Any alternative to tweak the phone besides rooting the phone
9) Why can't we get Gmail to push on the Email Widget?
May seem like alot of qualms with the phone, but it is only a spec of how I feel about the phone cause I Love it. Also I am aware that maybe 1 or 2 of the questions have been asked. I want new CDMA users to be able to find a unified thread that will answer most of the issues that i found relative to other CDMA users I know. I know alot of users cause I see them all the time. I actually work for Sprint and I am also an official advocate for the phone. I have been steadily doing my research, but the ones explained above I have no answers to. Please do not close my thread because you think it is a repeat thread. It is questions regarding CDMA and CDMA only, cause all the other threads are Ambiguous. I don't know if they are for CDMA or GSM only. Instead of bashing could I get a reply like "1) http://www.example.com," or "1) and 2) this is how you solve the issue" or something of the like. Since I don't know anything about making tweaks, this is my way to find a solution to this vast CDMA problem of not finding solid answers. Oh yeah, please if you leave us new CDMA users a link, don't leave that link that leads us into Google search or XDA search. I already know about that one. Thanx people
For question 2 about the sms notifications in the bar but not displaying a preview of the message, I use handcent vs chompsms. I like the UI better and it incorporates numerous options for notifications, including showing a new message icon in the notification bar without displaying the message preview.
My only real concerns on the phone are A] battery life. I'm doing a lot of testing on this and should have some solid baselines soon. B] Trackball sensitivity. I love the idea of using a trackball for navigating parts of the UI, but it is just too darn slow. One half of a revolution of the ball for example only moves the cursor in a text field one character. This is horrible. It takes a long time to scroll back the beginning of the text. For now I find myself just using the touch interface for most of what I would use the trackball for. There has got to be a fix for this.
I am also a Sprint employee and offical advocate for the CDMA Hero. Looks like we share a lot of common concerns. Coming from WinMo and Blackberry, i was excited about the Andriod platform, but it seems like (maybe because the phone is so new) that there AREN'T any major players yet. I've read several forums here on Xda about people showing interest about rooting but not much about actual attempts. i have tried several methods built for the GSM versions, but all have failed. Myself and another guy were sucessful in getting the phone into bootloader, but I'm hesitant to flash a GSM rom onto the phone even though 1.6 is supposed to have native CDMA support. Anyhow, let me know if you find anyhting and i'll do likewise.
I still haven't figured out how to tether my cdma Hero. I keep getting errorcode 65 and 67 when I try to use the mobile network sharing on the phone.
I believe you will find that Sprint have disable tethering - i.e. it's a network issue, not a phone issue.
Try PDAnet (google it!) as I've heard this gets around this.
Regards,
Dave
tethering sucess
ive managed to tether my sprint hero using both the native 'mobile network sharing' and pdanet.
the pdanet one is pretty easy to use, but to use MNS, you have to install the NDIS driver. You have to install HTC Sync, but this does not install the NDIS driver directly, just gives you access to it which is located in the HTC Sync install folder in the usb drivers sub-folder (can't remember the exact name of it).
You have to go into device manager and find the unknown device that represents the phone and manually update it.
Once installed, it should add a network connection and you should be all set.

I think I need you to be a little more specific about this: What was the item you updated in your device manager? I checked my driver and the downloaded version of HTC Synch installed the NDIS driver and automatically generated the connection on the My Connections page (Win XP) but I still get the error 67 when I try to connect to the internet.

pdanet says fail to open device for file transfer
and MNS still will not work after selecting the ndis driver
yeah, i got that error message every so often...i just disconnected it all, turned MNS off, connected it back up, then reenabled it.
i will try again later on tonight and get back to you
Kinda new here and I've been searching Google for a good hour to no avail.
I have a Sprint HTC Hero with active service through Sprint that I'm looking to switch to a Page Plus phone number (just purchased a pre-activated Page Plus phone from a local gas station). Main goal is to get the Page Plus service working on the Hero with the Page Plus number as the number for it with text and calling functionality.
I've seen a couple threads where people have said that they flashed their CDMA Hero to a Page Plus ROM and have no problem using it. I cannot find a ROM anywhere that says it's strictly for Page Plus which is making me wonder: Can any ROM be used on Page Plus? And if so, does this mean I switch carriers (Sprint to Page Plus) using another method?
Any help or points into the right direction would be greatly appreciated. I know people often get flamed for "not searching before posting" but I would be eternally grateful for any help that any of you could provide me. Thanks!
Did you ever find an answer to this? I want to do the same thing.
Easiest way would be to go to page plus website and see if the phone can be ported over. If the phone is in a contract with Sprint still you probably wont get your number. I know you can get a locked verizon to page plus but i went through, mingo 1st.
From HowardForums concerning Sprint handsets to page plus:
* Sprint (and Sprint MVNO) handsets are by far, the most difficult. All handset are locked, The OTA activation is incompatible. The MMS system (Picture Mail) is incompatible. IMHO, these handsets are more or less for serious hackers only.

change to the spc code to 000000, then manually program the phone.

danknee, I assume that by changing the spc code that during this process you are changing the esn code to the page plus phone's eventually correct?
The reason I ask is I may want to try this eventually on the new Virgin Mobile Beyond Talk plan. If I could get my Hero on there I might just do that. Or once the Evo comes out use the Hero to try putting it on there for my son...
I put a Sprint Samsung Instinct on PP using CDMA workshop. I kind of stumbled though it though. Howardforums is a good resource. I recall having to charge the spc, but definitely not the esn. Also, I had to use CDMA workshop to push a Verizon prl unto the. phone. When registering it with PP, I entered I had some other Samsung branded phone(done online).
I was able to use it as a phone but data & picture mails were not.
Good luck.
Changing the spc is just so you can get the phone to update ota. Same step you rake when flashing to cricket. I've done lots of wm phones to cricket. Mms is by far the biggest pain in the ass. From what I understand people have flashed the hero to cricket with working internet, but apps that use the internet do not work. Also, no mms. You will probably be looking at a similar situation here.
Solution
This is in fact quite simple. I recently did it myself. Google Kitty Wireless, and there is a page for manual programming. Download the PRL from that page, put it on your SD card, and click the phone. Type in ##prl# (Im pretty sure this is right, if not google, update prl) and find the file and update the PRL. This will flash your phone and make it use Verizon towers instead of sprint ones. Now that the easy part is done, use Kitty Wireless' activate page, add your ESN, and your phone is on PagePlus, you need to finish though by finish programming your phone.
Now, install aLogCat, phone, ##data#, veiw mode. Go to aLogCat, hit menu, pause, and scroll up to find the MSL code. Now go back, and instead of hitting view mode, hit edit, and type in the MSL code. This will allow you to finish programming it. Now go onto that manual programming page at kitty wireless and finish what they tell you to do.
Any more questions, Ill check back later and try to help.
HTC Hero(sprint) on pageplus
Data is definitely not working. Its an overkill to use HTC hero on pageplus for txt and voice only. I think the refference to "Serious hacker" earlier means making custom baseband firmware. The changes need to accomodate inputting pageplus settings. Or I wonder if anyone tried to load verizon eris baseband firmware on sprint hero.
A few days ago, I have done for activating my Sprint HTC Hero to PagePlus. I ported my phone number, so I didn't change my phone number but my carrier has been changed.. lol.
I posted the instruction to do it. Here you are.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=789751
Also, I got the information about how to make the phone working for data and MMS. I didn't try it because I don't need data. Wifi is around me mostly. If you need, tell me.
------------ I copied the instruction here ------------
I really appreciate you, TpyoKnig.
Now, FINALLY I activated my Sprint HTC Hero to PagePlus. I don't need to waste money for data plan (at least $30/mo). As TpyoKing helped me to activate it, let me post some information I have done for my Hero, in order to help those who want to activate Sprint HTC Hero to PagePlus. If you have any question, tell me. (I'm not a dealer for pageplus. so please don't give me any money.)
Here are what I've got. (I added my experience.)
1) thing you have to have is root for your phone, if you have that then great! Also you need to be running a NON-Froyo Rom (the froyo roms, I've tested thus far) are lacking EPST which will be used later to program the phone. --> My case, I installed NFX-Hero ROM. After I activated my phone to PagePlus, I'm running CM6 ROM. It works fine now.
2) Search the Market (Via WiFi) and download 'MSL reader'
3) Write down that MSL (will need it later)
4) reboot phone
5) download pageplus.prl from a web and put on root of SD card
6) on your phone pull up the dialer (hit the green button) and put in ##775# (##PRL#) and put in your MSL code you got earlier
7) select "update PRL", drop down "Folder" to "SD Card" and push down on your navigation ball and then long press the "menu" key to make your keyboard lower and select pageplus.prl then select "ok", then press your "menu" key and hit commit modification
8) phone will reboot (Congratulations you'r now on Verizon towers!)
9) Get PagePlus to activate phone (eg, contact a local dealer) , tell them you are manually programming a Sprint phone and give them the IMEI and that you need your MIN/MDN and SID. --> In my case, I purchased pageplus from Kittywireless.com. They promptly provide MIN/MDN and SID.
10) on your phone, pull up the dialer and dial ##YOUR6DIGITALMSL# , then select edit mode
11) change Mobile Directory Number (MDN=your new phone number from pageplus) to what is given to you by PP/dealer
12) change MSID to your MIN (Mobile Identification Number) as suplied by PP/Dealer
12) press menu
13) commit changes
I'm really happy.
It Does Work...
DATA and MMS do work I have a Hero on PagePlus and can do both. In fact I've also helped 3 others do that same .
http://www.bpcr.biz/buddy/Android.zip has instructions (not made by me) and APN backup and restore, and the correct APN file needed for PagePlus MMS. Also has instructions on howto get the data settings correct using QPST.
If you have any questions or need help when doing the process PM me or email me [email protected] and I'll contact you back ASAP
Thanks,
Buddy
Thanks guys, got the data working on pageplus using that tutorial.

No Problem . I made it easy . took me a while to get it all working.
Thanks for the helpful information. I'm having some problems getting my Alltel HTC Hero cdma on Page Plus. If you have time, can you take a look at the question I posted as a thread? It's titled "prl update for page plus on alltel htc hero cdma".
Thanks
i am attempting to change my HTC Hero (Sprint) to PagePlus...does the device has to be already activated with sprint in order to work. (it is currently deactivated no serivce)

no it doesn't that is not a requirement. just follow the directions that I've linked to: http://www.bpcr.biz/buddy/Android.zip
I have a few questions for everyone. I currently have about a year left on my sprint contract. I am willing to buy it out and switch to page plus, but I would like to save money on the phones. With sprint I have 2 HTC Heros. If I can get them to work that would save a bit of $$.
Question about procedure: In the directions (in zip file) it says they are for EVO, will it still work on Hero? Next question, in the directions it says "THIS TUTURAL IS ASSUMING THAT YOU ARE ALREADY BASIC FLASHED!". What does that mean? Is that the basic rom? My Hero is rooted and running CM6. My wife's Hero is stock sprint (1.5 I think).
Question about numbers (if you know...if not no biggie): I want to port my numbers from sprint to page plus.
Thanks in advance for any help!!!

There was supposed to be more to that: I want to port my numbers from sprint to page plus. Should I do the flashing to page plus procedure first, then call page plus and get them to activate it? Or is the flashing procedure something I do after I join page plus? All in all, I want to keep my phone numbers, they might be worth more to me than the phone

Basic flash is what I've already outlined, in the previous page, loading the PRL and inputting your MDN/MIN to the phone , the rest of the tutorial is for acquired the beloved 3g and yes it can work on ANY HTC device, Hero/Evo
HTC Hero Sprint to PagePlus instructions
Does anyone still have the conversion instructions for Sprint HTC Hero handy? I'm trying to convert my HTC Hero from Sprint to PagePlus but this link does not work any more.
I own a HTC Hero (in the guise of the Tmobile G2) running stock updated everything.
My issue is relating to a specific program called "calorie counter".
I am not able to download this program no matter how i try, in fact whenever i search for it or link to it via barcode, it just pretends that it doesn't exist.
Now i am aware that this suggests compatability issues, for instance i cannot find google goggles either due to its lack of backwards compatability with android 1.5. So you'd think this was the same......however, my friend who has a HTC Hero on Orange, running stock roms, can find and download the program no problems....go figure
leaves me confused
are market apps restricted by carrier?
thanks
Before you flame me to death, I have searched the forums high and low for over an hour on this, but I can't find anyting.
I have a Tilt 2, recently installed the latest Nrgy rom and love it, but I would like to put back a few of the original AT&T apps that came with their rom.
Is there a thread somewhere or a website that contains a list of the originally installed apps and a way to download them? Things like the AT&T Navigator...I didn't use it for mapping, because I didn't want to pay them $10/month, but I did use it for a yellow pages. There were a few other handy apps I'd like to have back.
Any help is appreciated.

Try using Google maps or Bing which have similar Yellow Pagey-ish search functions with the added benefits of free GPS mapping and Directions.
Otherwise go here: http://ota.telenav.com/ and select AT&T as your carrier, and they you can download
