I have had A500 for couple of days. I want to get the basic android softwares on it. Later I will root it but first I want to try the normal softwares and tools. I am looking for instructions how to install the basic android applications on it
- android market
- google maps
- gmail
When I got my A500 I noticed there is no google maps, no gmail no android market app. Browser and normal email application is available and several other applications.
Here is the version information of the device. Languages on the device are english, simplified chinese and traditional chinese.
Android version
3.0.1
Kernel version
2.6.36.3-00001-gda2e777
Build number
Acer_A500_1.13502_AAP_CUS4
FLEXVersion
02_AAP_CUS4
Product SKU
Wifi
Device info version
1.0
Model ID
A500
EC version
21010000
on the right up corner you can tap, to see all of the installed applications
Is there a list of applications which should be found on a brand new Acer A500?
THere should already ( maps, gmail, and market apps ) on a stock A500... !
even if you have nothing... at least there should be 1 app ( MARKET ) !!
this is another one of Acer's weird approach to standardize the same device ( 1 device, yet so many different build # )
You should try and get the data connection functional first ( home wifi )... then go into "settings--about device---system update" and push the system update button to see if there is an update available for you
FYI... in order to visit market... you need at least a gmail/google account. ( it is still strange that you don't have market icon/app pre-installed
I have checked, no gmail, only the "normal" email application. There is application called minimap, half of the menus are in chinese, other half in english.
There is some other nonstandard market application. It is gohd something. There is chinese applications on that market. Nothing usefull there.
This Acer is Asia version.
I have android phone which works here in China, android market on that phone works also. This Acer A500 looks very very limited. I guess I need to root it to make it usefull.
sorry I couldn't be more helpful...
You sure you didn't get swindled for one knock-off device ??
It's just sound weird from what you've listed of the device's contents
I puchased Iconia in china and got the same issue : no google market but a GoMarketHD !!!!!!
how can we install google market ?
To the best of my knowledge, Android Market in not available in China.
I'm sure if you had it installed and it was tied to a Chinese @gmail account or whatever, downloads would fail.
The chances are the only option would be to root and ROM the tab ***I'm just guessing*** OR you'll have to find some other way to circumvent the system checks. Your ISP might not even allow it - the Marketplace itself might not even allow incoming connections from China - I don't know.
Others might be more knowledgeable about this issue.
Good luck.
To be honest, it sounds like rooting the tablet and installing another non-Asian ROM on it would be the best solution.
well I have an HTC Desire which I purchsed in China as well and google market is working fine !
yeah I think I am going to root it ......
Look for the honeycomb version of market here on xda and sideload it. Any of the tablet forums here probably have of posted. Then just download gmail once that's installed right from the market.

I have the Google IO Galaxy Tab. I've downloaded a number of apps from the Android Market that are not showing up in the Android Market place. I can see the apps when I click on the Apps button in the upper right part of the home screen and they all run just fine, but they don't show up as downloaded apps in Market. The apps also show up on market.android.com as well.
I was hoping that the Honeycomb update would fix the problem, but it did not. I've also tried clearing the cache and data from the Market app, but it did not fix the problem either. Anyone else experience this problem?
Saw this response in the support section of market.android.com listed under Known Issues:
Applications missing from "My Apps"
We're aware of reports from some users that several applications are missing under "My Apps" on their devices, and we're currently looking into the issue.
So any ROM I choose whether custom or stock, I hate using the market with it. For one I'll sign in and install apps.
Go to the Android Market website and sign in and none of them show under "My library" but any apps I install via the web interface show up there. But now any apps I did that for show up as "INSTALLED". I factory reset my phone so now I have 4 pages of apps saying "INSTALLED" when they are not installed what so ever.
So even if I did uninstall them they still show, plus when I reset. None of my applications re-download. I thought it was supposed to on Android...This is making me question getting another android device.
None of my apps re download and I'm glad because i have seen the garbage I've download in the past in my android market library. Also the android market library doesn't display all the apps i have installed in the past which again isn't a problem because i know which apps i need and no longer download useless garbage. I don't the the 'installed apps' bug though.
Hey
I rooted my new NSTGL (bought yesterday) and everything seems to work properly.
I did according the suggestions but if I enter the web via built-in browser (Opera Mini doesn't work and has to be updatet first - same as the market) it let me in just to the link of e.g. google play.
If i choose such a link with the built-in browser so it takes me back to the Android Home of my nook.
So I don't have any possibility to get the recommended apps for Opera Mini or the market.
Does anybode have an idea, how I can update anykind of a browser for entering the links e.g. Google Play?
The connection to the web is established wee, the gmali-app shows me incoming mails.
I was also not able to create a B&N Account on the nook (I did in the web) because it doesn't work from Switzerland.
But the problem is to find a way to get into the appstore...
Thanks for helping an sorry for my English - is not my mothertongue

I don't know if it's the same with Glowlight, but with Nook Simple Touch Nook browser or Opera don't work. In first boot after root you log in to Google services by Youtube, then refresh Gmail and then wait half a day until market works.
After market works, you still won't be able to use search function, so you have to scroll and scroll until you find Es File Explorer (or under My Apps with luck you could have a file manager). With ES File Explorer or other file manager, you can install your apk's, including alternative app markets like 1mobilemarket.
Also don't forget to go to Nook Color Tools and tap twice the field "allow install 3rd party apps (uncheck and then check again).
The only other option than I'm aware of is creating an amazon account through a vpn and american adress, so you can install apps through amazon app store that comes pre-instaled with nook root package.

Jepp - it seems that the problem was that I did not wait half a day... Meanwhile I am able to download any apps from the market but the selection is very restrictet. It mus be a thing of the android version. I don't know which android runs unter NSTGL.
There is no Webbrowser ready for install - no Firefox or Chrome or Opera Mobile which was the suggested browser in the root-guidance.
With installing apk-files I don't have any experience - thi is the first time i rooted a device. Do you know a good source for that in the www?
Thanks a lot and have a nice week.

Nook Touch has Android 2.1, which lots of apps don't support anymore.
For instance, in order to get Aldiko or Kindle working, you have to install previous versions, which generally you can get on the app section of Nook Touch forum on XDA or googling it. To be honest, I don't usually memorize the sites I use to that, since I have all the apk I need (if you have a request, pm me).
Installing an apk is very easy: just copy the file to SD Card, than open it with a file manager on your Nook and voilá (don't forget to go to Nook Color Tools and tap twice the field "allow install 3rd party apps (uncheck and then check again).
As I suggested to you earlier, you have to go to Top Free Apps on Market app, scroll down until you find ES File Explorer and install it. Then, you can install all apk's, like 1mobilemarket that is kind of a non official market http://www.1mobile.com/app/market/
Don't say thanks, press the thanks button
I'll admit, I'm a bit of a n00b when it comes to hacking the Nook Simple Touch. Last time I used it, it automagically updated itself to the 1.2.0 firmware, and had that obnoxious overlay on the screensaver.
I saw NookManager in the Development forum, found the image, dd'd it onto a spare microSD card, and fired up my Nook Simple Touch.
Success! My NST is now rooted!
And there's a software tool that came with NookManager that let me turn that annoying screensaver overlay off!
But I'm having trouble digging up apps. There's the Amazon app store, but a lot of apps that I would are missing, or only have paid versions.
I'm wondering if there's a simple way to get Google Play on there. There's some instructions I found running searches, but they're all applicable to other rooting methods.
Should I just go googling for an apk and try installing it with adb? Or do I have to perform unnatural acts to make it work?
Also, being a n00b, what other apps should I put on my Nook? I just found Aldiko - it seems the NST's built-in epub reader crashes on badly formatted epubs sometimes, so I'm trying other ereaders.
You need to find a version of android market that is compatible with 2.1.
My reccomened apps
Opera Mobile (only web browser that works)
Greader ( google reader app, google reader from google is also good)
Apv pdf reader (this pdf reader is by far the best for nook and with norefresh it is amazing)
Good-ereader app store ( alternate app store)
Kingsoft office( good office suite)
Home manager ( if you have multiple launchers)
K-9 mail (crash free email client)
Searchmarket (needed to use android market)
Es file explorer (needed for viewing nook files)
My favorite launcher((GO LAUNCHER EX))
Sent from my NOOK Simple touch using xda app-developers app
alternatives :
web browser : MAXTHON
pdf : Marathi Book and PDF Reader
switching between apk's : TaskXp
file manager : rhytm file manager
launcher : legacy launcher
I want to set Go launcher as default. But I can't do that, when I press the home button, it shows only 2 choices, "Home" and "Relaunch".. Anyone help me plz...
I couldn't install the market, I suggest you to download directly apk's into your SD Card and install them.
Install first ES EXPLORER (I love it!)

I don't believe that Google Play will work with Android 2.1. However, if you are looking to install Google Apps, check out this thread:
