so with my minimal knowledge of phone stuffs ive kinda learned that when i run the wireless tether for root app on my phone it uses ad hoc to supply other computers with internet... basically im asking, will my evo be able to supply my xoom with internet?
Not at the moment, no support for Ad-Hoc networks in HC, not sure if there ever will be - very annoying.
I'm not sure but I believe there is a new version of Wireless Tether that will allow such a connection. When I first tried the Kindle connecting to my DX, it wouldn't connect. With the new version, it does.

My Xoom connects to my DX with no problems.
Go download Wireless Tether from the website. The experimental one is called Wifi Tether now. Works like a charm for infrastructure mode so that the Xoom can tether with your phone. Also Bluetooth seems to work fine as well.

Is the Wireless tether for the phone or the Xoom (or both)? I need an option for the iPhone in case the steps posted here won't work!
is this an app that enables ad-hoc detection on the Xoom,
or
does it just provide a full wifi hotspot tethering feature for Android devices?
I also use an iPhone which supplies an ad-hoc hotspot connection that I need my Xoom to recognize and connect to.
So does that mean you got it to work that way? Is the app available through the Market?
No its not available in the market. Google wireless tether and look for wifi tether. The new app sends the signal via infrastructure mode. I think it applies to certain phone like Droid X and EVO.
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
The Wireless Tether app is ran on the host phone wanting to be turned into a wifi hotspot. There are certain phones that run in Ad-Hoc mode in default (aka Droid 1) and the only option to tether the Xoom to them is via bluetooth. As others have said, the new version "WiFi Tether" is apparently enabling infrastructure mode rather than Ad-hoc mode, something that the Xoom can actually connect to.
There is no app that you install on the Xoom. When the WiFi Tether is ran on the host device, the Xoom just connects to it as a WiFi router and works just fine (or bluetooth if thats what you're doing).
So OP, if you can't get the new version of WiFi tether to work for you and your Xoom, try the Bluetooth tethering option, it's been shown in detail in a thread here how to do it, and it should work just fine.

The app is for android, and for the host device not the Xoom, so you'll need to Bluetooth tether your iPhone.
wpa_supplicant
I understand exactly what the OP is talking about, as i'm trying to do the same thing. What makes matters worse, is that ad-hoc connections ARE possible in android. Meaning android can connect to ad-hoc networks, but it requires swapping out the wpa_suppplicant file in system/bin with a modified one that doesn't filter out ad-hoc networks.
i've even tested this on my EVO, and it connects to other android phones incapable of broadcasting in infrastructure mode, it even connects to my ubuntu netbook broadcasting in ad-hoc...
(if you want to see what i'm talking, just search the forums for wpa_supplicant, something will turn up )
I've tried doing the same "fix" with my xoom, but it doesn't take. Using ADB or root explorer, i've replaced the orignal (making sure to save a copy just in case) and fixed permissions to 775, but it doesn't take. The wifi antenna will turn on, but it doesn't find anything once being replaced, not even saved networks or access points. I can get wifi back by restoring my backup, but i'm at a loss as to why it doesn't work on the xoom (3.0) but does with my evo (2.3).
as a side note, i'm using the right replacement for the wpa version returned by entering
"wpa_supplicant -v" in a terminal emulator or adb. It returns version v0.6.10 and there is a working, modified, v0.6.10 that should make things work, but doesn't....
anyway, if anyone has any input, i would love to hear it!
I am in the same boat. Regardless of whatever permission settings I have tried (mentioned in the dev forums that I can't yet post in), I still get a dead wifi with the new supplicant file.
Ah, I feel better now. It must have been the supplicant file, as I found this other one and it worked without permission modifications first time out.
You will have to google "xoom supplicant" and use the file found on the first response (android.net)-I can't post the link- the downside to attitude having, overlord type forums is inability for new users to provide any help, or at least with any convenience.
i try connecting my xoom to my computer, and it wouldn't work. i have the "Intel My Wifi Technology" but each time i set up a connection, the xoom finds it, but will take like a minute trying to connect and all i see on the xoom is "Obtaining IP address". it shows on my computer that a new device is connected. maybe this only works computer to computer. cuz i have had success with another laptop connecting to my computer with no problem.
I am using the Launchpad kernel and the WPASupplicant file and am connected to my phone's ad-Hoc network now. I used the beta Wi-Fi Tether and it worked great, but crashed my Samsung Galaxy S at least twice a day. So I installed the WPA file without setting any special permissions, just used Root Explorer to copy it an it worked fine.
Is there a way to connect on a ad-hoc hostet by a laptop (win7) yet?
That would be interesting, cause if it work this way, it will work for every phone or something else!
Hey Guys,
i am having a little problem. i am using the Intel My Wifi Technology. and i don't know if i am doiing something wrong or this is just not possible. but i try connecting my xoom to my laptop, and it is not working or connecting. i get a message on the xoom that say's Obtaining IP address", but nothing happen on the xoom. is this not yet possible on the xoom. i don't know if this is consider ad-hoc network or not, cuz i am new to all this.
but here is the link to intel website for the program i am using as a wifi hotspot.

and here is a video of what the program does.

anyone with knowlwdge on this please help me understand what i am doing wrong or not doing. or even if this is a possibility.
If you're not opposed to rooting your Xoom, here's another option. I just unlocked and rooted my WiFi-only Xoom yesterday, and inserted the supplicant file in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033314
It works like a charm! I'm running a WinMo Touch Pro 2 with WMWiFiRouter, and the Xoom now sees and properly connects to Ad Hoc networks. And, it still works with all other networks.
I don't know which way you prefer to attack the problem (from the Xoom or the phone), but I've been thrilled ever since I got all this done yesterday. Everything else on the Xoom is great, and now I've got the working SD card as well.

Is it right that you host a Wifi on your computer and tether internet to you tablet? I think its the usual problem android and ad-hoch, witch not work!
Can someone post how we can get the Tab to recognize ad hoc. I'd like to be able to tether with my rooted d1. Also, if I root and have to unroot because I need to return it is there anyway best buy or Acer would know I rooted?

When I try to extract the file, a bad zip error message pops up. I tried it with root explorer ES file explorer. Is there any other download link?
The zip is fine, but it won't extract on the tablet with any zip tool I've found. Just unzip it on your desktop and push it over.
I had to use the following tip to remount as "adb remount" wouldn't work for me:
http://android-tricks.blogspot.com/2009/01/mount-filesystem-read-write.html
Also, on that tip about remounting - make sure you do "cat /proc/mounts", find the entry for /system and use that device in the command.
After installing this (and backing up the original first) I was able to find and connect to Barnacle on my Samsung Galaxy S phone.
Thanks this worked for me. Make sure you change the permissions on the file or you will break your wifi.

In my HTC Desire's Wi-Fi Hotspot app, I set an SSID, enabled WPA2 (AES) security, set the password, turned it on and my A500 connected without any issue or fiddling around: select the network - supply the key and start surfing.
What's the difference between Ad-Hoc and the Desire's Wi-Fi Hotspot? My Acer is tethered and able to pull data through my 3G data plan on my Desire, all without "messing" with any of it's internals! Why the need to mess around ?

If you get "error" and no networks at all show, the permissions are probably wrong on wpa_supplicant. Do the chmod command to make it executable mentioned in the tutorial for the Xoom.

Because you must have a tethering supported plan (if not, you're probably about to when your carrier figures out you're using it, or else you might get hit with a per GB fee next month.)
My plan doesn't officially support tethering, and using the tether app supplied with your phone (or the Android sharing stuff built in) will require a tethering plan.
Using another app like "Barnacle" or similar, the phone acts as a NAT router and generates an ad-hoc wireless network. As far as the carrier knows, you're using the data directly from the phone, not over wireless tether.
I had them set back to the original config of 755, tried it twice to make sure it was right, I put the original file back and set permission and it worked with laptop but not A500. Might be something I will look further, thanks.

Can someone post a working copy of the wpa_supplicant, for some reason I have tried d/ling 2 copies and I get the samething "No Networks Found". Permissions were set correctly I verified twice and when I put the original back in place it worked fine. So odds are I just have a bad file, any help would be appreciated.
The only problem I've found with this is that the network configuration is saved without the (*) that the ad-hoc is designated with.
For example, my ad-hoc is (*)network, when it is broadcasting. I click the network, enter the password, and it works just GREAT!!
However, after disconnecting from the network it removes the (*) from 'network'. The next time I want to connect again, I must re-scan and enter the password again. Not a huge bug, but still a bug. The Notion Ink adam saved the network with the (*) so it would always reconnect when I needed it.
Anyway, GREAT work to all who have made this possible. I appreciate it, a TON!
Thanks,
Bob

Yeah, I have the same problem, however that did that on my Windows 7 laptop, too.It might be something particular to ad-hoc networks.

The hotspot app on your Desire creates a genuine WiFi infrastructure access point, whereas most of the 3rd party WiFi tether apps create an adhoc network, which out-of-the-box Android cannot connect to.

Is there Any way to tether TF with Android Phone after Carriers' Crackdown on Tethering?
I have all the apps i could possibly need installed on my phone, yet even after paired with my transformer via BT, and the transformer showing it being connected to the internet. I get 0 data going from my phone to transformer.
I've tried PDAnet 3.0, Barnacle and WIFI Tether. No dice.
And you can rule out not knowing how to do it, I've been tethering for the past year only started being an issue after the crackdown.

Edit : looks like its US only at the mo.
Can a carrier tell if data is from the phone or via tethering????

I tether just fine on my mytouch 4g running cyanogen mod 7. I dont think carriers notice if you tether another android device because on their end it just looks like an android device accessing it, not a laptop or such. I think they check user agent strings. I've honestly never had a problem tethering on TMO and never got any text or anything about it being blocked. I do keep an eye on my data usage just to make sure I dont raise any red flags in their system. I havent tried tethering my laptop since the crackdown but I did install a plug in for firefox that allows you to change the user agent string so the servers think it's an android device accessing the network
Hey Guys, been following this thread since I ordered from Best Buy, finally decided to join and post. I have mine coming on the 12th hopefully.
I read about the crackdown on tethering but from what I understand they are just making the tethering apps not show up in the market, they are not necessarily doing anything to prevent tethering.
I am currently using wireless tethering on my droid 2 with the Ipad 1 and have been for quite some time without a problem. Hope that helps and love this forum, thanks guys...

One thing to note is that Honeycomb doesn't recognize Ad-Hoc networks. You may be having problems if you're trying to set up your phone as a wi-fi hotspot. Trying using the bluetooth tethering options.
Hi, i've just found out how to connect my phone (xperia x10) to my just arrived transformer.
I've been looking all through the forum to find out how to share my phone's connection but i didn't find any solution so, i hope, my reply will help at least you not to waste time any further
Simply install "PdaNet Tablet" both on your tablet and your phone (yes, PdaNet TABLET also on your phone).
This is how it worked for me:
1) Start "pdanet tablet" on your transformer and set the proxy hostname and port as stated in the program (127.0.0.1 and 1234)
2) Start "pdanet for tablet" on your phone and click "enable pda server"
3) Wait a few seconds
4) Allow your phone to open bluetooth and be visible
5) On your tablet, on the "pdanet tablet" screen click "tap to discover new phones"
6) On your tablet click on your phone's name
7) DONE!
I hope this helped

Then the connection will drop after browsing 2-3 web pages.
At least that's my experience with the PDANet Tablet.
Email client and GMail client do not seem to work either.
I hope they will fix it and make it stable, its a good solution for people with stock ROM (both phone and tablet).
I know with my Xoom I had to flash a patch to get it to connect to my tethered Thunderbolt, is it possible to use the Galaxy yet? Or is there a patch? I saw one for ADHOC in the 10.1v forums but wasnt sure if it worked for 10.1
Yes it does. Try it out. Don't forget to turn on airplane mode before following the procedure.
On a side note you might want to post this in the Q&A section, not development section. Especially since one week ago I posted a topic saying that it does in fact work - l2 search before posting.
Some people say that if you have the latest version of WiFi Tether on your phone that the Tab should see it. So try that first. However, my tab could not see it so i had to do things the old fashioned way.
If you are in the same boat then you need to replace wpa_supplicant which is in system/bin with the one from the xoom (search for it, there's a link to it somewhere in the Galaxy Tab 10.1 forums. that's because the Tab's wifi driver filters out Ad Hoc wifi servers (which your phone is). You will need Root Explorer or some other file manager for root users. Here is a quickie tutorial
0) make sure your tab has regular wifi access before you start this process
1) Get the wpa_supplicant file from this thread (look at the bottom of the first post)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1083182&highlight=wpa_supplicant
2) Unzip the file and get the wpa_supplicant file which is in \system\bin of the zip
3) On your phone go to \system\bin using Root Explorer and copy it to somewhere on your SD Card.
4) Copy the new wpa_supplicant file that you unzipped in step 2 to a folder on your tab's sd card
5) Turn on R/W access in Root Explorer
6) Replace the wpa_supplicant file in /system/bin with the new one
7) Final step VERY IMPORTANT - change the permissions on /system/bin/wpa_supplicant to be rwe
8) Reboot tab
9) Verify that you still have traditional wifi access
10) Turn on WiFi tether on your phone
11) Go into wifi settings in setup and see if your tab can now see Android Tether

Because an access point is not an access point. There is a big difference between ad-hoc and infrastructure mode. Android won't connect to an ad-hoc network. And my OG Droid along with other, older Android phones won't do infrastructure right out of the box.
Last I checked, while Access points do have support for Ad-Hoc, that is not the primary purpose of an AP. Ad-Hoc is generally a non service providing device to device.
An Access point by its very nature of being an AP does so in infrastructure mode. I do realize that I may have jumped the gun as many of the older devices do not support functioning as a true AP, rather an ad hoc network with a proxy running in the background to proxy data.

Yes, it is a pain. But if you are using certain older phones (Android 2.2 or older) that do not provide infrastructure wifi then you are forced to make the Tab recognize ad hoc and out of the box the Galaxy Tab 10.1 does not.
I am glad for you and others who have had it easy. I suggest that people try to wifi tether the easy way first, without changing wpa_supplicant. But it is a method of last resort which is better than nothing.
Windows Phone to tether 10.1
So from what I'm reading on the forums, it seems most of you have android phones and are using them to tether to the 10.1 after rooting. I have a crappy windows HTC HD2, it has wifi router on it, but like everyone else the tab does not recognize it. I was hoping that this WiFi Tether thing, I assume it's an app? Will work if I get it. Any experience trying to accomplish this and give me the warm fuzzy if I happen to pursue installing and going through the root process that is already posted, that it will work? I'd much rather try getting this WiFi Tether thing than go through and root the tab.

Wi-Fi Tether is an Android app for phones, so I don't think it'll help you unless you put the Android ROM on your HD2. So you're gonna have to root and follow the directions posted to get it to work.

Just use Barnacle Wifi Tether in the Market

New At This!
Hey all, Loving my GTab at the moment except for the inability to tether it to my iPhone. This is a new arena for me. I have been jailbreaking each of my iphone versions since the first but I have never had a Android phone before so no idea how to root it. The steps listed on the first page of this thread, are those the steps you have to follow AFTER you have rooted the phone? If so, I am assuming everyone has had success at rooting the 10.1 tablet so far. I ask cuz I would never tell my friends to jailbreak their phone cuz if you do not know what your doing you can screw something up. I dont want to fall into the same category. I am going to do a search for rooting in Galaxy Tab 10.1 but figured I would first see if those directions are all I need to know. thanks in advance and sorry if I missed any post that already has this info in it.
I asked you this in your other thread, but it's probably best placed here:
iPhone 4 or 3GS?
I don't think the 3 can create and infrastructure hot spot, only ad-hoc which takes rooting to connect to. I could be wrong about that though as I'm not an Apple guy.
If you have a 4, TetherMe is an app that should allow you to create an infrastructure hotspot and your 10.1 will connect to it. You won't have to root if you go this route.
Or you can just get a Nexus S 4G like me with infrastructure mode out of the box...

Good and Bad news!

If you have a 4, TetherMe is an app that should allow you to create an infrastructure hotspot and your 10.1 will connect to it. You won't have to root if you go this route.

Ok it seems that PDANet doesn't have the infrastructure hotspot but fortunately TetherMe allows tethering on any APN that is used for iphone data. So the hide usage feature from PDANet seems to have been ported over to TetherMe so I am going to give it a whirl and see what we come up with! Too bad I paid for PDANet a while back! LOL
============================
Installed and tethering perfectly without the need to root! VanSmack my man...Madd Props! However, I should note for those with iPhone4 looking to do this, I ran into a snag along the way. I am not sure why but TetherMe crashed during the middle of its install and took me about 10 mins to get it rebooted, purge of the half install and installed again. I am not sure if My3G and/or PdaNet conflict with the install of TetherMe or if it was a random glitch, but I uninstalled both of them and reinstalled TetherMe and it installed like a charm. Simple easy and connect. Thanks again everyone!

I asked you this in your other thread, but it's probably best placed here:
iPhone 4 or 3GS?
I don't think the 3 can create and infrastructure hot spot, only ad-hoc which takes rooting to connect to. I could be wrong about that though as I'm not an Apple guy.If you have a 4, TetherMe is an app that should allow you to create an infrastructure hotspot and your 10.1 will connect to it. You won't have to root if you go this route.
Or you can just get a Nexus S 4G like me with infrastructure mode out of the box...

Any Apple 3GS guys know the answer here? I have one (3GS), want to tether the SGT to it but don't want to root the Tab.
Much appreciated

TetherMe now supports all iPhones from iOS 3.x up to iOS 4.3 so you should be able to use the same software I installed to tether your GTab. However the easiest way to check it is to go into cydia and find TetherMe and see if your device supports its. I would post a link but i'm a newbie thus its inactive.
As I understand it, the iPhone 3GS wifi chip does not have infrastructure mode coded into its firmware. Thus I don't think TetherMe will fix that problem, but my recommendation would be to try it and find out. Again, I'm not an Apple guy, I've just played around with others phones and that's what I discovered.
And no sweat, stat. Glad to help.
Hey guys, i am here with a question for you ;d
I have my kindle fire rooted and with CM7, my HTC tattoo rooted and with CM7.
Now my HTC tattoo starts wifi tethering, my kindle fire can see the network and tries to connect to it for a couple of seconds and then disconnects. And so on until after a 20-30 minutes he connects and if i disconnect it repeats all over again.
Would be glad to see some responses, thanks

Try this app called ZT180 (i think) Ad-Hoc Switcher. Just google for the .apk and sideload it.
Basically it will switch the Kindle's WiFi from Infrastructure to Ad-hoc which should allow you to use Wifi Tether...
if your htc is in hotspot mode then you should need no special app
if it is in adhoc mode then you would need the zt 180 adhoc switcher as mentioned above
the bad thing is that zt 180 seems not to work on cm7 and ics
correct me anyone if i'm wrong ...

i get error
atleast one of the shell commands needed for this application to work is not available. The first not found command was:
chown
and then says i should try to reinstall busybox(which tried and have latest version)
suggestions
?
readed the last row of your post, yep not working with cm7 ;dd
see my post above ...
i assume your htc is working in hotspot mode since it would never connect
so the problem has to be in the settings eighter on htc or on kf
any security settings on the htc hotspot ?
which channel ? maybe try changing

tried differend wifi hotspot apps and diff settings(channels / frequencies) nothing helped
also just tried WiFi Ad Hoc enabler and after enabling it my wifi appears not to work at all(autoshutdown/crash/etc) so i restored back to normal.
as you wrote in your first post - the kf did see the wifi - whithout any app
i think you don't need any app on the kf - instead i would check the hotspot settings on the htc
normally the kf connects to nearly every hotspot flawlessly
i only use zt180 to tether with my laptop
but mine is stock rom - can't imagine this makes a difference regarding normal wif (not adhoc)
