Well not completely but compared to the other tablets Dev sections it does seem quite dormant. Just look at the Transformer or the Acer Inconia. There hasn't been much activity here besides a few mods but not any full releases.

Mmm... this topic has been brought up so so so many times...
It's hard to do anything when Google is keeping the Honeycomb source locked up. As far as I know the other Honeycomb tablets have been modified by the manufacturing company to alter certain parts of the Android OS and such, thus allowing for a bit more flexibility when it comes to development.
As far as the Xoom goes, it's the only official pure stock vanilla Google experience tablet, and Google is keeping it locked down without further notice. It's assumed that they will be ready to fully release the source for everything when Ice Cream Sandwich launches in the near future.
If the devs could use magic, they would. Until then... we must wait for ICS. The Xoom is Google's baby, as it was the first of it's kind to start the dawn of the Honeycomb era. When they are good and ready, the development scene for the Xoom will skyrocket in short notice. Trust me.
Also, the only other thing the developers can try besides just tweaking stuff is port the Galaxy Tab 10.1's Touch Wiz Rom to the Xoom. But it's a step back as it's only Android 3.1 while we are already on 3.2.
Someone should get a job at Google and leak the Honeycomb source and then quit. That would be epic.

Also the other devices are incorporating Xoom or Galaxy bits and catching up. This is the problem with the device officially having the newest OS out there. The will be a day when the Xooms' longevity will be evident.
As for now we have the latest and greatest already. It is hard for us flashoholics but there's a reason so much is going on with the Asus and Acer. They needed help hence the Xoom and Galaxy ports. Its lonely at the top. By the way we have Tiamat which in my opinion is the gold standard.
I'm a flashaholic. Good thing I have my thunderbolt or I would go into withdrawls.

Fully sourced custom Roms. That's what everybody is looking for. With that you would have new features, tweaks, and abilities that a stock Rom would never give you in a million years. Tiamat is the gold standard and the other devices wish they had them on their side. The team is just amazing to have created a modified stock Rom experience that works better than default stock. And when they are able to create fully customized fully sourced custom Roms... a loss for words...
Don't feel to bad because the other devices roms are usually referenced to our stock roms.

Awesome! How they don't realize from the past with Android custom devs how much further android could be catapulted past the competition I just don't know.
I also don't get how people are so quick to hop on the latest updates when, even without the source being released, previous versions customers by devs blow away whatever little appetizers Google farts out to us.
Anyhow, I gotta say the Xoom has come an awful long way considering the SC hasn't even been released.
Devs are friggin awesome!
Imagine if the source was out. Xoom sales would jump tenfold.

And you know that how? I'm one of those "everybody" and I'm not looking for that. I'm looking for someone to take over Ubuntu-development. Even Asus EEE, Acer Iconia and Samsung Galaxy Tab have Ubuntu-ROMS, but we have some crap-ass VNC-Ubuntu. If they can do it (especially considering the Asus EEE and Acer Iconia have the same Tegra 2), then it should be possible for us too. That is what I'm looking for, so don't talk for everybody please.

It's just a general statement, not literally meaning every single person. It's just something one says, and it's not meant to be taken literally as an individual. But ok: "A lot" of people are looking forward to the fully sourced, and full customization from a true custom Rom. And generally speaking... the first thing the average root user thinks of are the custom Roms when they hear the term "source code". Ultimately that's what it would mean when the source code is released. The devs will then have the proper tools to start developing new custom Roms. They will then begin to flood the market in due time with new and unique Roms, as was the same with the OG Droid.

Well I'm sure it's a valid point for you, but being a casual Android user who roots, having an Ubuntu based rom makes no sense to me. I admit I don't even know what an Ubuntu rom is for. Is it something like porting Windows OS into the tablet? If so, I doubt many users care for something like this since rom development to them is more about tweaking, optimizing, themeing and adding functions to an Android based rom. Porting other OSes is a lot more niche and caters to a smaller group of users.
So since the Honeycomb source is indefinitely locked up by Google, themed and overclocked Honeycomb is as good as we can get for now. The next best thing to wait for is Samsung to update the Galaxy Tab 10.1 to Honeycomb 3.2 and we'll probably get Touch Wiz ported over.
This question is primarily aimed at the Cyanogenmod devs for the Nook Color.
Will there be any incentive to port ICS/CM9 to the Nook Color after the Nook Tablet releases? Will there be any incentive to port ICS/CM9 to the Nook Tablet?
I'm really just trying to decide whether or not I should sell my Nook Color for the Nook Tablet, or keep it. I'm sure many other XDA members are wondering the same thing.
I'll keep my Nook Color if there are plans to port ICS to it. But I'll sell it and buy the Nook Tablet if there are plans to port CM9 to the Nook tablet.
I do hope both will get ICS.
I'm sure this will become cm8.

While I know cm9 / ics will come to the NT, I also don't doubt it will for the NC, too, but expect it to be plenty slower.
I plan on getting the NT right away, and giving the NC to the kids.

I'm pretty sure that it was an offhand comment, and things always change. So who knows.

I saw that comment too and it was before the Nook Tablet was announced. I believe the first priority was the HP Touchpad and then there was something else before the NC.
The thing most people don't understand about ICS is, it WILL be source released. Google wants it on every device. Optimized for every device. There is no need to port ICS as we will be able to build it from scratch AOSP style, just like the CM team does.

But the question is, what do you think the chances of a port for the i9000 are?
I don't know too much when it comes to the really technical side of things, but i assume there's no real reason that the Galaxy S couldn't run the OS, now that it's open source... is there?
Would you want to use Web OS on your phone?
It certainly is gorgeous, and fun to play with, if nothing else.
DISCUSS!
Since cm7 and other aosp builds work so poorly with the I9000, I wouldn't hold my breath. Don't think for a minute though that someone won't try.
Might be fun to play around with on a weekend.

WebOS is useless, but it still could be fun. Nobody will work on it, however - too much work for a dead OS.

I don't think so. I had the Palm Pre 1 and still have the Pre 3. They're great and easy to use. WebOs has so much potential, it shouldn't be given up that easy. It's so innovative and full of interesting functions, I would love to see a port to the SGS!!
Some of it's benefits:
really fast!!
easy to use
a great solution for "multitasking" (some say it's a useless gimmick, but they should take a look how other OS's solved this problem (!...))
Opensource
To compare how good the software architecture of WebOs is, take a look at the Moto Droid (Milestone 1) and the Palm Pre. While the Droid is very laggy on Eclaire or even Froyo, the Palm Pre, with the same processor as the Droid, runs very very fast and smooth. Even with WebOs 2.1, which isn't really released for the Pre. There's a port of WebOs 2.1 for the Pre and even then it's still so smooth and fast. Flash contents on websites are running very fast, but when I take a look at my Droid using flash contents on websites...I'm able to count the frames...
I still belive in WebOs, because it'S, in my opinion, a great OS!!
I would flash WebOS onto my device, even when i cannot go back to Android.
Devs, go for it
Sounds great
I would flash it , but android ics is really good!
maybe because the designer of webOS has worked on designing ICS
Sent from my GT-I9000 using Tapatalk
I had a Palm Pre for a while after my Desire died. I would not use it again, WebOS has quite a good homebrew community but Android offers thousands of apps more and is more intuitive in my opinion.
Is this topic still alive, will someone work to port Webos to Galaxy S i9000.
I have used webos and now I moved to android after my webos died.
I personally perfer webos over android, could someone let me know the status of this topic.
Here is a nice article about the subject :

actually its a smart step from Hp to go Open source better than killing the WebOS , they think if WebOs given the amount to attention as the android having now the WebOS tablet may superpass Android tablet and maybe IOS tablet too !!
let's hope for the best

I reckon we have about as much chance as getting a B2G port. That is, near zero.
Anybody able & interested in starting a port for our i9000?
So WebOS just went open source, and to be honest, it's a pretty nice looking OS, despite its lack of apps. Would anyone be willing to attempt a port of it to the MyTouch4g? Or even just some sort of add in for android? I know that it's been ported to the Evo 3d or something. I think it'd be really cool to have this option for android.

Agreed. Would love to play around with the OS. +1.
would be EXTREMELY hard to port... :/
it's a whole other OS, not just a different UI with android running under the hood.

+1
I would love it if it happened. Unfortunately, it will take time for webOS's source to actually open up. It also would not likely be an easy port, although having both be linux-based should help somewhat...
Meh.. coming from a user that owns 2 touch pads believe me, its not worth it. The card system is nice, but that's about it.
I've had the tp since August and it sat on a shelf collecting dust til the alpha build of cm7 came out. And since that came out, I haven't booted into webos once(the tp cm7 is multi boot with cm7/webos)
Probably energy will be better spent developing an home replacement that looks like webos than trying to make our phones into a "palm" the os is just not as practical as an android unless you're just doing really basic stuff.
Just my opinion

If you are willing to root it and put custom roms on it, its an amazing device. The lack of Bluetooth and camera are minor to me. Removable storage would he nice. Ice cream sandwich and jelly bean run better on my fire than any other device I have used. The kindle fire stock is kind of a let down though. If you don't feel like messing with it and want something great out of the box, you would be better spending $200 on a nexus 7 (but even those are having some issues)

On jelly bean you have to sideload flash player, and chrome browser doesn't support flash at all, but the stock browser works just fine for that.

Bad memory. I did some bad sector scanning, the internal memory is dead.

the last acces I had from the internal memory it was just enough to flash update.zip. at least...
any way, like I said, I'm not an official developper but I'm trying a lot of stuff since making app and scripts is easy and none of my devices fail. I had hard brick, and I was able to get it back.

And one more thing, a tablet, imho, is the most useless electonic device on the market. especially if you have a smartphone.

I've had my Fire since the release and I've had no such problems. I also bought one for my brother and grandmother, with no problems either.
I'm truly sorry for your poor experience, but I'm afraid most people don't seem to be having the same problems as you, that I can tell.
I'd strongly recommend the Kindle Fire as a cheap tablet if you can get it for a great price, but I'm planning on upgrading to a Nexus 7 soon, myself. For $80-125, if you can find one for that, it would be an ultimate cheap productivity and entertainment device.
Make sure to install CM9 or CM10 (I have CM10), though. Stock is useless, unless you're a true e-book fan.
I also had little experience with modifying android before my kindle, but I had no problems at any stage of the process. Just stick to the instructions and everything will work fine.

I believe that the kindle fire suffers from parts inconsistency. It is a price point type of product and was intended to run the reduced functionality of the amazon os. This explains why there are some kindles that work and spec well while others spec low and even break. For myself, I rooted and loaded mine in front of my computer with instructions in front of me. When it went off course, I googled and kept going. My kindle specs pretty average. It helps that I have been a system builder for 20 years. I do not fault the kindle, and amazon exchanges it easily.

Good luck with the exchange. Generally there is no warranty on prizes (not just with Amazon but with other companies too). Hopefully they will help you out. Amazon seems to be pretty easy to work with from what I have heard so you might be in luck.
Back on topic, I haven't had my Kindle for long but I agree with what most of the people here are saying. It can be a great tablet when it is rooted and flashed with CM9 or CM10. I somewhat miss having a front facing camera because I would like to use face unlock, but it definately isn't a deal breaker at the price that these are going for used. I got mine in a trade for an older 19" lcd tv/monitor that I quit using about 4 years ago so it was almost like I got it for free. After using the kindle for a little while now I would definately recommend it as long as you can get one for about $125 or less. If you can only find one that is in the $150+ range then you might as well save up a little bit longer and get the Nexus7 IMO.
I would go with the Nexus.
If you can score one for under $150 go for it! I just received a free Kindle Fire from my bank a few days ago, and I'm loving it!
To get the full experience out of it however, I would suggest reading up on some of the tutorials and get a dual boot going.
It's so awesome being able to boot into MoDaCo when you want to use Amazon's services, and then switch to CM10 when you want a more "traditional" tablet experience!
