[Q] "banding" screen issue - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Hi everyone, i bought this phone ~1 week ago.
Everything works fine and i'm pretty happy with it(even if i'd like some more smoothness coming from such high specs).
The main issue i met is the "banding" problem, i read a bit on the internet and it looks like it's a software problem(it has something to do with colors depth).
What i'd like to know is if it's normal having "banding" problems of this entity and so frequently(it happens in almost any gradient displayed on the screen even on apps).
The other strange thing is that on my browser(stock one) sometimes the image changes for 0.5 secs every 2-3 secs and the banding issue doesn't show but it has some other "definition" issue as you will notice from the screenshots below.
Screenshot 1: banding issue(it happens all the time, even with apps' gradients; is it normal?).
Screenshot 2: banding issue almost gone but the image is not as defined as it should(it happens sometimes for 0.5 secs every 3 secs or so).
Does this come from a software problem or an hardware one? Do you have the same issue?
I'm using rocket rom v10.
Thanks

Ops... it looks like my thread belongs to the Q&A section.
May a moderator please move it?

I think this might be a software issue which I have experienced with MIUI on my old HD2. I'm using 2.3.6 stock rom right now and doesn't seem to have this problem

The banding issue is there since the Galaxy S1 days, Did any of the custom ROMs really fiix this issue?

Desire HD also had this problem in its early days. Mine got fixed when i flashed MIUI (2.3.7)

[Q] Display washed out (negative and monochrome)

Not sure if anyone has had this happen before (I searched, but maybe didn't use the right terms).
Every so often (sometimes less than once a month, sometimes every week), the phone wakes to this sort of display where all the colours are inverted, and washed out. Requires me to reboot or wear sunglasses. See pic below, I also inverted the colours on the version on the right, showing the phone is really inverting and messing the colours up.
I have observed it with both ROMs: Gauner Desire HD, and imilka Incredible Sense 1.1 (currently running).
Any clues as to what is causing this?
A few times i had it when my phone sees intense light.dont worry its not a real problem.

Hi,
Imilka said that this was just a glitch.
Reboot,and it will go away.
It is not serious.
If it happens a lot, change ROMS.

Nexus 7 Backlight Flicker?

Does anyone else have this problem with their nexus 7? I just got my nexus 7 today but I noticed that the backlight seems to flicker randomly
It doesn't look like much in the video but it is very noticeable and gets annoying when you're reading an ebook like i was.. Here's a video showing the problem.(It's near the end)
VIDEO LINK: h**p://db.tt/28eD0NLk (It happens around 9 second in) (change ** into tt)
For whatever reason this forum would not post a video link to show the problem.. for those who wants to know what it looks like please PM me..
But basically the screen flickers randomly ..
Is this a software problem? Should I go back and get it exchanged?

I've had a similar problem as well. It seemed to happen to me on auto-brightness when it was changing the brightness level. I can't say for sure though, just my observation.

I havn't tried it yet..do we know if it's a hardware problem or software?
I just got it today so I can still return it if it turns out to be hardware
We really dunno at this point, but we are speculating software since both HTC One X and TF300 had similar problems and were fixed with firmware updates. Also someone switched it three times and all of them had this issue. Also try to run the screen in a pitch black room and tell me if the screen flicker is there. I may have a theory but need some other people to see if their units are behaving the same way as mine.
You can still post the link when you alter it a bit, insert a few *** into it, for example.
I turned mine on as soon as I got hold of it, no flicker, managed to go through and set up things, powered off and left to charged.
Coming back to it the screen would appear to turn on and off randomly, I thought it could be an app controlling a proximity sensor (I have one on my phone and I was EXTREMELY tired!), when I took it into the light there was no change.
I found that shaking it would help it flicker on and off at all intervals but didn't fix it. In the end I just started pushing random areas on the back, just before the issue went away I pressed around the bottom left quarter of mine and haven't had an issue since!
Glad I wasn't the only one with the problem though and would love to actually find out what it was.
Hope this helps!

Try this video,
h**p://dl.dropbox.com/u/13153603/Videos/VID_20120715_100253.mp4
it is using google map and you can see the constant flickering.. It doesn't look very severe in the video but it is actually very noticeable and annoying
I have the same issue with mine. It only seems noticeable when I have the brightness set to the lowest setting and on a page that is predominately white. I don't think it's the proximity sensor though, because it happens both when I set it manually to the lowest setting and when I'm in the dark and the tablet sets the brightness all the way down itself. Hope the next update fixed this, because it's really annoying!

I first noticed this flicker in a darkened room, so yes, it is definitely something going on. I'll try disabling auto-brightness to see if that matters.
If anyone else has info about this, please share!

I can attest that the flicker is ever present in a pitch black room as well.
Like this?
There are a few videos on youtube, but i cant post links but if you do a search you can find it
I noticed a flickering in chrome yesterday. But only in chrome and only while the page is rendering after it fully renders no more flickering.
Everyone turn off wifi and I guarantee it will go away. It happens when using wifi which makes it hard to believe that a software update can fix it.

intermittent lines on screen. hard or software?

hey,
I've noticed some lines showing up on my screen... they only show once every 10/15 min and run across the vritical when in landscape mode. typically only one or two pixels thick and lasts only a moment.
Like every one my tablet takes a tumble now and again, but if it was hardware then my is it so intermittent?
any ideas?
I think this has happened to mine too but it flashes so fast that I don't know if it's happening or I'm seeing things. It's very rare though for me.

I get it every now and again, seems to happen when the screen has been on for a long period.
Not sure what is causing it, I tried to Google it but couldn't find anything.
It seems to be software guys, as before the 4.1.2 update I was getting these lines around 2x as often. Hopefully the next ota knocks them out for good.
I think it is WiFi reception strength related. In my case, they appear only when WiFi signal is weak. They have been there since the beginning. But now, not only vertical, some times horizontal lines appear as well. Horizontal lines didn't exist before 4.1.2 update. Same issue have I with my TF700. So, I assume it's both hardware/software related.

I never had this with stock rom but have had it with some custom roms, I had it with "slimbean 2.7" but since updating to 2.8 it has gone. So, it points to software.
Maybe megamoz is onto something too.
I don't think it is a faulty screen. Something else is going on.
I am on rooted stock, had them both before and after rooting.
Don't think it is related to the WIFI, not for me anyway, as I get it when browsing in the living room and I sit right next to my router so I get full signal.

that would sound like a prime candidate for me. I have been stuck in hospital for 10 days, and the tab has been on for 15+ hours at a time some days... although the wifi angle is interesting too.
just happy its "normal" and not that I dropped it
thanks everyone for you input
Yeah I am also getting them and they seem to happen more when there is alot of white background on my screen or maybe that's when I notice them more lol but as far as problems go that's all my NEXUS7 has so hopefully it is software and can be fixed with a good old update COME ONNN 4.2 GOD BLESS YOU GUYS

I see it everytime I use Flipboard, and also have noticed it in Maxthon occasionally. At times it flickers, and others the thin line will stay until I move to another page/screen.

its software. i remember seeing a post a while back about a guy who managed to take a screenshot of it. somehow. if it was a hardware issue, it wouldnt appear on a screenshot

Nexus 10 screen glitches

Every so often (usually when scrolling between home screens, and ALWAYS on the home screen), the screen has a horizontal line, maybe 200 pixels high, that just bugs out for half a second. I'm wondering if this is a problem with software or hardware so I can decide whether or not to RMA. For reference, I'm on stock and have not updated to 4.2 (I don't want to deal with all of the problems people are having with 4.2).
So, has anybody else experienced this? Thanks.

I've been having this happen to me. I've had my nexus 10 for about a week now. Did you find a solution to this?
That's not the glitch I have. What my problem is that I play Angry Birds and when I touch the screen to activate a bird it takes about 1/2 a second to respond. I keep thinking it's Angry Birds but maybe not. The OP says "glitches" so I think I'm still on topic.

I'm having the same issue. I've only had the n10 for a few days but I'm getting that little screen glitch a lot. Always about 20% up from the bottom of the screen in landscape, and it stays there in portrait so it's on the left or right side. Is everyone getting these? Has it gone away for anyone or have you found a solution?

My game problem was handled by flashing the JOP40D OTA zip. It seems to have handled anything I was noticing.

So, I know I'm replying to a very old thread, but I'm having the same issue and we wondering if anyone had RMA'd their nexus? Mine's out if warranty in a month and want to return it if this is potentially a hardware issue.

Reboot while in camera

When taking pictures in low light situations with flash (it seems low battery enhances the probability) sometimes the pictures get artifacts (white lines close to the top/bottom of the picture).
And sometimes the phone gets stuck and reboots. The camera tends to make clicking noises right before it reboots that are louder than when usually focusing.
Look at the screenshot and at the end you can see the reboot. You can see a sudden battery level drop after the reboot.
I don't know if this is hardware or software related but a user suggested this to be a problem with the stock camera app.
I had this problem on two devices already and it seems to be on all devices, maybe just rarer for some people? Not sure.
If you have this problem vote for the following issue and hope google fixes it:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=49702&#makechanges
I had something similar happen to me once last week. I was viewing my photos in the stratosphere mode and would hit the back button. I had to repeatedly do this to scroll to the next images after viewing them. When hitting the back button it would take me back to take a picture, but one time, it took me to a blank screen with the camera buttons still working. I ended up needing to restart my phone. Not sure what happened there.
I have only seen this once. It didn't occur again, so I haven't chased it down
Ditto only happened once in the first week of using and has never happened again

Kinda sucks when it happens randomly, today it happened twice to me and that in 4.2.2!

I also have it, but less frequent, about one or two times per month. It happened on 4.2.1 and no one could solve it in my thread about this .

The device was a little hot but not as hot as when in gaming and in gaming it never reboots.
Look at the screen shot and at the end you can see the reboot. What I'm worried about is the sudden battery level drop after the reboot.
Are these reboots hardware or software related? Should I get a replacement?

I seem to have the same issue. So far, it has only occurred when I am trying to take a photo with the flash on. One more observation: seems to happen more often if the battery is low. However, both of us might be having defective devices, as it doesn't seem to be a common issue looking the forums here.
No solution found so far. Tried a factory reset. Tried using another camera app. Nothing helped. Might try flashing a custom ROM.

All oft the things you described apply to my situation too. Also I noticed that pictures tend to have artifacts (white stripes close to the top/bottom). They always have the same distance from top/bottom but their length differs.
Also after the forced reboot there sometimes appears an extra picture in the gallery that is fully grey.

I don't seem to have the artifact problem that you described. Also there is a creaking sound sometimes just before it restarts.
Have you tried flashing a custom ROM? Did it help? Otherwise RMA is possibly the way to go.
I ordered the phone from US using a mail forwarding service, so an rma will cost me another $100 or so. If you or anyone else can confirm that it is definitely a hardware issue which can be resolved by getting a replacement, i might go for it.

I was on AOKP PUB Krait 05/02 by Stevespear and Harsh Kernel and I did have a reboot there once too. Also this is already my third Nexus 4 since I had to replace it 2 times due to issues (bottom side creaking 1st device / yellow blotches 2nd device) and this one really looks good only this camera reboot issue is left.
But my first phone did have the issue too, I didn't have the 2nd phone long enough so didn't see it happen there. I have no idea if it is a hardware or software issue but my bet is that all Nexus 4's have that issue.
It just seems that it appears rather rarely and most people don't notice it. Or it could be that the voltage is too low and that would explain why it happens on some phones more than on others since not all chips are equal. I was wondering if somehow setting the flash to be weaker so it draws less power would solve this. But I am just a user and don't really have an idea.
PS: I won't get my phone replaced since I can live with this issue (it happens rather rarely) and I went through 2 replacements to get this device which is close to perfect but I wouldn't mind if someone came up with a solution.
That makes me feel really lucky to have gotten a nearly perfect device. Anyway, guess we just have to live with it then. Lowering the flash intensity sounds like a good idea. Will check if some rom/kernel/app can do it for me.

Having the same problem here on 4.2.1 and 4.2.2. I think it might be the buggy stock camera/gallery app because I can't replicate the problem on the Camera Zoom FX app.
Edit: I remember having this problem on 4.2.1 and then clearing the gallery app data and not ever seeing the issue happen again. I will try the same on 4.2.2 and see if it fixes it too.
I added a link to the issue on OP guess that is all I can do.

I have had this issue with the Camera FX Zoom app also. So, at least in my case, I guess it's a hardware/camera driver issue. Anyway, I also cleared the gallery app data a few days back and haven't faced this issue since then, but haven't taken enough pics with flash to confirm that the issue is truly gone.

Has the issue disappeared after clearing the app data for you? I certainly have not faced any reboots since doing it.
