[Q] New 5GHz Radio support? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm not sure about this, but I thought when I first got my Glacier phone back in Feb. that it would not see my 5GHz wifi and only connected to my 2.4GHz wifi. Last night I noticed the wifi symbol on the phone was partially grayed out so I went into wifi settings, and it was trying to connect to my 5GHz ssid. I rebooted it and sho-nuff it's connected to my 5GHz! How long has our phones been working properly with 5GHz wifi? Is this something that was fixed in the last radio update? Or has it been working for a while? My wifi router is a Sysco E3000.

Where does this common misconception come from?
WiFi has nothing to do with radio.
WiFi is a kernel module, completely under kernel control. And WiFi HW is mostly completely different and separate from baseband, even physically not in the same chip.

I also assumed radio baseband affected wifi. Noone ever said otherwise.
Is bluetooth also separate?

probably because the word "radio" in the context of networking might imply a broad range of things to the uninitiated -- it kind of implies wireless communication

must be an android thing where single words are the fashion instead of acronyms that stand for much more descriptive names.
Also, the latest T-Mobile/Glacierupdate was said to update the "radio" and I noticed that my phone now sees my 5GHz ssid. So I figured there was a correlation.
So when did the Glacier start communicating properly at 5GHz?

Yes, usually bluetooth is with WiFi and FM radio. I know of Broadcom chip used in Nexus One (BCM4329) for that, I believe it's more or less the same on MT4G. Newer SoCs might include the modules, but they won't be related to radio in any case. Radio is a complex separate entity, running its own firmware (which is the "baseband" being updated).
Most probably MT4G had the capability to support wireless 802.11a right from the start:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-Mobile_myTouch_4G
"has a wireless card supporting a/b/g/n connections"
Might also be that Gingerbread update brought the latest drivers, that supported 802.11a.
Officially it isn't supported, but since the HW obviously does, and the drivers are probably taken from the WiFi chip maker without modifications - it might work.

Working Wireless N / Fm radio!

check this out over at phandroid..
//phandroid.com/2010/04/22/wireless-n-on-the-nexus-one-could-it-be/
Looks like wifi n is working and fm radio coming so with 2.2..
Uh, I already connect via 802.11n to my home router, as confirmed in my router logs that shows that my chumby is connecting at 802.11g and my laptop and phone are connecting at 802.11n.
It might not be getting 'n' speeds, but it certainly appears to be connecting that way.
I have the '850' (AT&T) version of the phone, f/w 2.1-update1 build epe54b, bought about a month ago.
Am I stating the obvious?
I have a wireless n and my nexus connects as well as having N speeds. I get about 6MBs d/l.
I have screenshots connecting to an N-only router at 65mbit and I've connected at 84mbit other times. So yeah, I'm confused.

Mine connects at N speeds (or at least identifies as 72Mbps) and using iperf to measure I can get 34Mbits/sec, though my access points have N they only have a 100Mbit LAN connection on them. For a connection that negotiates at 72Mbits/sec I think getting almost 50% of that in actual speed is pretty good. However, you will note that, 34Mbits/sec is well within reason for wireless G.
to be honest i didnt even realize that until after I looked into it. I guess its good news for the stock guys..So anyone heard anything new with the fm tuner?
Didn't we already figure the 802.11n part of this out?
As I recall, the N1 was initially advertised as being N compatible. Then Google took that off the site. I think it's assumed that it's able to connect to 2.4Ghz networks, but not 5Ghz networks. So, it connects to some 802.11n networks, but not all. There's some kind of speed penalty for being unable to use the 5GHz portion of the spec, AFAIK.
Hope someone corrects me if I'm wrong.
It said "802.11 b/g/n" on googles page when I bought it. It gave me the "go ahead" reason to buy an N router.
It just says 802.11 b/g now though...as already stated.
Who really cares? Wireless G is not going to be a bottleneck connecting to the internet, and I don't know if we can move data onto the microsd card all that fast anyway.
So with the new driver adding FM support does that mean we'll still have to wait for 2.2 or can people start getting it working now?

Not unless you can compile it...
Unless kmobs or cyanogen has released a compiled version that they were playing with last night?
this is no problem to compile with a standart (included) make script. But ! It will be executable file (if you want i can post him). It works (runs) but i dont know now what to do with him =).
Can anybody post here manual for this controller? First of all i want to try FM transmitter.
Late i will post executeble, and .so file (try to think about compile .ko module)
Sorry for my english =).
where is the last driver?
on git I only see the driver from October 2009..
nice
The ability to connect to N is great but what I really want is the FM transmitter!
I can see nothing in the driver suggesting FM support... I'd imagine that the FM support would fall into either a separate driver or perhaps the Bluetooth driver for that chip (as it operates through that part of the chip and shares audio inputs/outputs with the Bluetooth). Aaaannnnd I can't see if or where an open source Bluetooth driver for this chip is. We'll have to wait for the Desire kernel source.
Wireless N is working perfectly with my N1 and laptop. I have my router on N only and the phone is connected at 65mbps. I get download speeds of upto 9Mbps, which is max for my internet. When I was on G only I would usually get around 2-6Mbps from the N1. So the wireless N mode is more stable and consistent.
+1 on the FM transmitter.
For vehicles without bluetooth and for those who do not want an extra wire.
SQUEAL!
FM receiver, can't wait....

[Q] 4.2.1 unsupported wi-fi?

I realized that my University's wifi somehow does not support 4.2.1
I've asked them about it, and they said 4.2's kernel might be different and it might not recognize the wifi.
What can i do about that without downgrading? (My device is rooted.)
Thanks.
Perhaps you should say a few words about your University WiFi. Same goes for what you have done to your N7 (as you stated that it is rooted). Maybe you could mention whether or not you personally had it working with a 4.1.x-derived ROM on the phone - reading between the lines it sounds like that might be the case, but it isn't clearly stated.
"Does not support" is not very descriptive.
First - does the WiFi scan on the N7 display the network? (e.g. the N7 does not support Ad-Hoc networks, so they won't even show up in the first place)
What details can you provide about the WiFi network?
- Ad-hoc or Infrastructure mode?
- is WEP/WPA/WPA2 in use?
- if Y to above question, how is key distribution performed?
Are there any other relevant symptoms, such as the N7 connecting, but then fails to get an IP address - or gets an IP, but still acts as if not connected?
If you are convinced that it is in fact a 4.1.x vs. 4.2.x issue, could you not just install a 4.1.x-derived ROM?
Note also that the n7 does not support WiFi N band. Make sure the university provides G support.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
The N7 absolutely supports 802.11 b/g/n. Take a look at the tech specs in Play store.

I know that, Wi-Fi works with Galaxy S 3 having 4.1.1
And the setting used to access Wi-Fi are as follows:
Security: 802.1x EAP
EAP Method: PEAP
Phase 2 Authentication: MSCHAPV2
... And I put-in my username and password in the followings.
I tried to connect, it shows the signal much weaker then it actually is, then it tried to connect, but just fails...

That's all well and good, but it doesn't necessarily mean that 4.1.x vs. 4.2.x is the cause of things. Different hardware, different OS, and presumably different WiFi radio hardware and firmware. Could be any of those things, the OS being one of them.

Association and Authentication to a WiFi AP have lots of moving parts. It is possible that the problem is with either of them. (My WAG would be the authentication process) Without a super-geek that can help you with wireless sniffing (to see if the fault location can be inferred), or your campus IT help desk being able to look at authentication logs, you don't really have much recourse but to:
- do something drastic (e.g. install new ROMs)
- experiment with the settings in the WiFi "Add network" page, and look to see if you get any meaningful or diagnostic messages in the system logs. I tried it just now, but I don't have an 802.1x AP available to test (a failed PW, for instance) with to see if anything diagnostic shows up in logcat. Is it possible that it is just a bad password entry? (I have had problems when I cut and paste in android with various apps inserting a leading space ahead of the paste).
The 4.1.2 factory image for the WiFi N7 (grouper) is still available from Google - I think the form in which they provide it to you needs to be flashed using fastboot though, and managing that seems to cause newbs trouble. You might want to just find an older ROM which is based on 4.1.x and try it to see if it fits your hypothesis. (If you fool with a factory ROM install, make sure you have backups of EVERYTHING first).
Good luck
I have taken my nexus 7 to IT they looked into it and they said its possibly that it not compatible with 4.2.1
I guess downgrading to 4.1.2 might do trick, but I also don't want to leave the awesome features of 4.2.1
I guess I will firstly try different kernels and see if they change anything.
This thread contains reports of problems with both 4.1.x and 4.2.x N7's
I suspect that just reflects a diversity of different wireless networks; but anyway - see the logcat entries with "I/wpa_supplicant" in them? Your tablet (on 4.2.1 or whatever) might have similar things in it that gives clues as to where the errors occur.
You can get logcats with adb - or failing that, there are free market apps you can get which will dump the logcat to a file of your chosing.
Good luck
Thanks I will take a look at those.
Miss-statement on my part earlier. Nexus 7 does support 802.1n operation - but only in the 2.4ghz band. 5ghz is not supported. My router supports both - and the faster ssids are not even visible on the Nexus 7.

802.11n specifies channel bonding techniques as well as optional use of the 5 Ghz radio band.
So, marketers can safely say "Wifi N" or some such - as long as the hardware/software can do channel bonding (but possibly not operate in the 5 Ghz band).
Here's Asus N7 Spec Page, as you see they do not mention 5Ghz Wifi.
My thinking is that if the hardware had it, it would also show up proudly in the specs.
A to the Q: hardware.
It now occurs to me that Zhoene earlier had said

A university setting probably would be a WDS (Wireless Distribution System) with many AP's. Possibly Zhoene was sitting close to a 5Ghz-only AP, and "seeing" a multi-band AP at a good distance away? Sure would be consistent with rmm200's observations on his/her router.
Also, I see reports of 5 Ghz service achieved on Galaxy S3 (Zhoene prev mentioned)
Perhaps this is exactly a 5Ghz AP vs. Nexus 7 issue.
And, oh crap after all this writing I did a search
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1777431&highlight=5ghz+802+11n&page=3
Zhoene you could ask your campus IT if there are any A/B/G- or B/G-only APs in their network & see if you can connect at those locations. If it was something weird like Beacons only in 5Ghz-band channels (I think that would violate the IEEE specs), then you could have been trying to connect to very remote APs - all the while getting clobbered by other devices sitting nearby doing 802.11n in the 2.4Ghz band, but also the nearby AP as well if it was operating in multi-band mode.
Thanks a lot for all the information, I'll try to find out what the problem really is using those informations.
Some of this talk of networking is over my head, but what I would try is flashing a 4.1.2 ROM/image and seeing if that fixes it. 4.1.1 had a bug that prevented the Nexus 7 from connecting to WPA-Enterprise networks, which is what my university uses (I know because my Kindle can't connect to it). 4.1.2 fixed this, and my Nexus 7 (on 4.1.2) can connect to my university's network. I have been rejecting the update to 4.2.1 after hearing about issues, so I don't know if it works with 4.2.1.

Wifi won't stay connected (not D-Link problem)

My phone has problems staying connected to wifi. It's often disconnected and has to reconnect when I wake my phone up (even though it's set to not turn off during sleep) and it'll disconnect and reconnect sometimes even when the phone is awake. I've read about people having problems with D-Link routers, but none of my routers are D-Link. The problem seems to have improved a lot after I flashed my modem to the MDL modem, but it still comes up. Does anyone have any solutions or would anyone know what could be causing this? I'm currently running the Wicked rom but I had this problem even when my phone was completely stock. Has anyone had this problem go away after switching to an AOSP-based rom?

I still have this problem, it disconnects and reconnects minutes later. I am on stock, stock kernel and rooted. could it be a root problem?
It can't be a root problem because I had this problem even when the phone was completely stock. I'm wondering if it's a TW problem, which is why I asked if anyone still had this problem after switching to AOSP (the Wicked rom I'm running now is TW).
If it were me, I would try a different modem, but thats just me.

Just because it isn't a DLINK wireless ap doesn't mean you won't issues. All the consumer-grade wireless routers/ap's share a narrow range of chipsets made by broadcom, atheros, etc.. So, the brand has nothing to do with it.
I would suggest getting a logcat if you can or try another wireless ap somewhere else. I've got a TPLINK wireless router with OpenWRT flashed, runs flawless.

He said the option was only available while originally connecting and setting up the connection for the first time. Maybe you can try to delete the wifi connection all together and then let it re-detect and go through the set up process again...if that is an option.
My phone was doing this on my friends router but not on my home router. He searched google & found something stating that the S4 dont like routers with AES encryption for the security. He changed his router security to TKIP+AES encryption & the next time I was there wi-fi stayed connected with no constant reconnect problems. Buuuut, my home router security is just AES & I have no issues connecting to it, yet at least. Dont know if this will help anybody else out but its worth a shot to play with your routers security settings.
I thought I had an issue with my I337 S4 do the same thing.turns out my phone was just bouncing around trying to connect to 6 other open WiFi signals I've used
So just to give an update, I tried installing another router in my house as an access point and the phone has no problems staying connected to it, so there's definitely something that the phone doesn't like about the other routers that I'm running. I'm reluctant to say that there's anything "wrong" with my old routers because no other device had a problem staying connected, but if anyone else experiences the same problem, changing routers/APs could work. Fwiw, my old routers had Broadcom chipsets while the new one has an Atheros chipset. I'm going to try updating the firmware for the old routers to see if it helps (I run DD-WRT and Tomato on all of my routers).

WPA/WPA2 decreases the bandwidth of the router. WPA2 will support a full 300Mbps link state. So yea, they are different, but it may not fix it.
I have a Cisco EA6500, so I'm connected to the AC 5Ghz band, and it works flawlessly. WPA2 Personal
My bad on typing WAP instead of WPA.
Doesn't sound like fully opening up the bandwidth will fix it.
Has something to do with how the phone manages the encryption keys?

[Bug?] Bluetooth and WiFi doesn't work in Conjunction.

Idk since when I'm having this issue but it's quite prominent and disturbing, when I'm connected to the Bluetooth speaker and my WiFi at the same time, the WiFi randomly disconnects and connects automatically and in some case the device doesn't even detect my WiFi network for quite a while. I need to confirm whether I am only one having this issue or it is present in others' handsets as well, thank you.
Which system version are you on? Are you rooted? Did you do any modifications to the system?
I'm on the 8.1.10 and it never happened to me

Yes, it is!! I tried a 5 ghz wifi this morning and have the same speed with bt off and on. So the problem is the interaction wifi/bt on 2.4 ghz.
I also tested a Redmi Note 4 Global in a 2.4 ghz wifi, with and without bt activated and have no issues on the speed.
Voice quality is terrible when using a bluetooth headset with a voip app on 2.4GHz wifi.
I have also had instances where bluetooth device gets disconnected when wifi is turned off.
My 4 year old phone does not have this problem.
There is definitely an issue with this phone. Hopefully a software bug.

Either it's a hardware issue or the problem is caused by WiFi interfering the Bluetooth signal as they both work on the 2.4Ghz band except if you're on 5Ghz WiFi. If anyone on 5Ghz WiFi has the issue too then this might be a hardware issue. I've sold my phone and got a OP3T and it slightly suffers from the same issue too so I guess it's not an hardware issue after all.
i have exactly same issue on android 8.0
Hi, I was able to solve this problem leaving all the modem / router configurations intact and acting only on the phone without needing root or anything else: it was enough to reset the network configurations of my Android device.
Follow the steps below:
1) Settings
2) System
3) Advanced
4) Reset options
5) Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth
6) Reset Settings
Once completed, reconnect to Wi-Fi (enter the password as if it were the first connection) and try a speed test to confirm the resolution.
Procedure tested on Mi A1 with Android 9 Patch July 2019.

Wifi issues with no known fix....

I recently picked up an 8 Pro and an 8t.
Same issue.
Can connect to wifi, no internet.
Reset router, tried all different security settings, forced both on to 2.4 and 5ghz bands only, changed channels on the router, factory resets, used device MAC, Bluetooth off, etc.
No go. I can't get them to connect, period.
Asus AC86U and AC5300 in a mesh setup. I even took the mesh setup down and just used the 86u.
All other devices on my network have no issues, including a 6t, 7 Pro and a 7t. Just the 8 Pro and 8t. Both brand new, received this week. Updated to the latest official 11 OS from OnePlus.
20+ devices on the network with no issues.
I have searched the net high and low to resolve the issue. Plenty of reports of the same issues, no solid resolution. Plenty of bug reports sent to OnePlus.
Any known fixes would be great, that aren't listed above.
Your oneplus devices, are they rooted?
Or pure stock? Where did you get them? Completely official? Which variant?
Wifi being borked is a common symptom of having an incorrect boot.img installed, usually happens when rooting and using an incorrect patched boot.img, phone will boot and will appear ok but wifi won't work.
As the same symptom has happened on two identical devices i'd say there are two main possibilities off the top of my head.
1. If the devices have been unlocked and rooted, then they weren't done properly and have the wrong boot img
2. You have a limit set on your router, get a third phone and set up a hotspot, see if the wifi is functional to eliminate the phones, then just need to troubleshoot your router.
If the phones are pure stock and functional on other networks, and you can add an additional device to your router (one that hasn't been added before) then that's odd.
Did you change the name of your router and the wifi networks have synced over?
remove any previously saved wifi networks from both devices, then try again.
I have the same issue and no fix...

Both phones stock, new out of the box.
Connected both phones to a Hotspot to get them updated to the most recent official releases.
Still the same issues.
As stated in OP, I have searched the net high and low for a fix.
Seems to be a common problem, that hasn't really been addressed.
I don't rule out my network, but again, what more can I change that I haven't already?
20+ devices on the same network, without a problem.
Just doesn't make sense.

So you were able to connect to a hotspot over WiFi just not your router? Have you tried other routers? I recently switched my router and my oneplus (which worked fine on the previous router) I ky connects to the 5ghzfrequency. Will not connect to 2.4ghz no matter what. It also works fine with the routers at work. Don't know why, I've tried everything, but it refused to connect at that frequency on that specific netgear router.
Hi, try to change between WPA2-PSK/TKIP or AES settings.

Hang on if your phones were able to connect to a hotspot then it's your router or the signal from your router.
A WiFi hotspot is a normal WiFi signal so there's nothing wrong with the phones.
I'd say it's the router.
Go to 192.168.0.1 on a web browser on a device connected to your router, check the device list, is there a max allowed devices? 20 isn't an uncommon limitation.
Delete the WiFi SSID from your phone (forget network)

OnePlus is capable of all of them.
But you're on the right track, it's the router.
It has to be
Apologies, i meant on router check security settings of wifi.
