[q] phone rooted! Now what? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Disclaimer: I'm a noob and I'm not a frequent user of XDA, but I did learn a lot of stuff here. Any NOOB questions and comments below will be justified upon what I said before.
SO here's some experience in rooting the phone and using the phone:
ROOTING
I always have the feeling that only a rooted phone is belonged to you. You are granted the POWER once you rooted your phone. Even though I was pretty lazy, I still pulled off rooting my HTC PANACHE (yeah, Canada) or MT4G. It was not quite smooth, even though the guide is awesomely written! (Give some credits to the XDA wiki, Setherio, and many others who helped out writing the guide.) The guide is easy to follow and very well written. And if you followed the guide right, you should get a nice rooted phone.
Some questions:
1. I get confused about PERM ROOT. IS it a must to fully operate a rooted phone?
2. And for the radio packages, are those a must for a rooted phone? IS that part of the ROM (I used to root SII for my friends, so I realized that radio is a different package and usually is not hte one to be rooted since it can cause severe problems)?
After I rooted my phone, I installed the new Glacier Icecream and found it quite slow (although I installed beta 3.1 on the day before 4.0 came out...luck), and many functions are not working, but I guess the DEV team is still working on it. So, I'm really appreciated your(anyone who helped out the project) effort!
Also I have some more questions:
1. What is the best (i want a balanced system, i don't play games too much, i do watch videos and stuff, and i'd like fancy animations and a good battery life, sounds quite ideal) ROM out there? I'm currently using Affinity Unity. Thanks
1.1 I see many ROMs are based off HTC sense, but I do not like the layout
of HTC sense, what ROM is great for that?
2. How to clean up dust under the screen?? Preferably without opening the front of the phone.
Thanks!

Ok well welcome to the mt4g for one and just off the bat for xda please post in the q&a section but moving onto your question, you could try miui as its INSANELY customizable and for the ics rom you could try flashing beta 3 and then the 3to4 patch posted by laggos with the darkside kernel. Its now my daily driver rom wise. Hope I helped, feel free to pm me with more qs

In fact I did read the Resource Bible, and found so many ROMS, that's the main reason I asked which one fits my description. But thanks for the help!

Try Mexdroidmod Ghost Chili edition. Its a heavily themed CM7 that is very stable.Should give you a nice mix of awesome, fast, and pretty.
Also, for more snap, go to spare parts and turn window and transition animations to fast.

As to removing dust from the screen, there's no way to remove the digitizer from the front without opening up the back of the phone. It's a tedious process but there are some good tutorials on how to do it.

I tried a few ROMs and felt like CM and Unity are amongst the best. However, I do feel Unity is more user friendlier, but i do like the cm customization functions.

It is in the devolopment forum but here is the link. http://files.androidspin.com/downloa...5.1_signed.zip
And the reason you dont have the market with CM is you need to download and install Gapps.zip for all CM roms. They are not included.
Not really sure why everyone seems to swear by iced glacier on here (other than its been out Longest) but I personally enjoy the sense ROMs provided by evil and gorilla a lot. The look of true HTC sense is beautiful by itself, though there are a lot of ways to theme them to your own liking. Plus, you get your HTC widgets by default, as well as other awesome HTC services. Plus, if speed is your thing, both can be overclocked. Battery life is good in both.
Anyhow, that's my two cents. Everyone has theit own opinions on what ROMs are best, and that's mine.

I dont swear by Ice Glacier. It is a good rom, but the others you mentioned are very good also. It is really about what you like personally. That is the great thing about Android and a rooted phone. You can check them all out and then decide what you like. All of them can be themed and every one can be overclocked for speed. Including Ice Glacier.

A ridiculous number? Cyanogemods, Iced Glacier, eVil's MIUI/DHD/Z/G2, Gorillasense/MIUI, several gingerbread flavours.
I suppose another question would ask for greater elaboration on the differences between ROMs.

Maybe hes referring to a different UI, since i think all these roms practically look the same. A completely distinguishing new look would be nice

[Q] Which ICS Rom?

I'm sure if this question has been asked previously but I can't seem to find it anywhere so here goes...
Which ICS rom would you say is the most stable? I would like to put an ICS rom on sister's phone. Or should she just go with another rom all together??
Please don't flame me for this question, I'm still a noob at this stuff
Thanks for any advice/recommendations.
There is no 'best' ROM..all on personal preferance. If you never use bluetooth, then one ROM might be more 'stable' than the other. If you do use bluetooth, then the other ROM might be more 'stable'. All on what your sister needs her phone to do. If it's just texting, calling, and facebook, any ICS ROM will do. Press thanks if I helped

She use her bluetooth all the time plus she plays alot of games too. Which would be the best for her? I was reading somewhere that there was a problem with low mic, I think I can't remember where I read that.

Depends on what she likes in a ROM as I said before. Many ROMs support bluetooth. For instance, unofficial CM9 here has bluetooth, but so does zips ROM here. I'd go with zips personally.

@g33kchic
I agree with invasion2 I have only tryed two of them but you should really do allot of reading on the different ones and make sure of things as far as how often the rom is updated. These roms are supper new so they have some strange non stock things that pop up from time to time I don't like to say bugs because most of these guys/gals do this as a hobbies and well things happen. So unless your ready to constantly be helping her with her phone you might think about doing to yours first. Just a FYI wish you well.

Euroskank cm 7.1 has some ics looks to it. Top it off with either go locker or widget locker for lock screen replacement.

I'd recommend TDJ's CM7 kang, and to get the ICS look, download an ICS CM7 theme, GO Launcher EX, and an ICS theme for GO Launcher EX. Set the lockscreen to Ring unlock in CM settings, and pick the Holo ring style. It's a really ICS heavy look while still retaining all the functionality and stability of GB.

I'd go with zips ROM, haven't run into any force-closes at all. Plus the aroma installer is great to have her there to see what apps you want pre-installed such as Angry Birds Space and other random goodies. It's extremely smooth and there's no low-mic issue. Just flash the camera patch that's in the OP of the zips thread ICS ROM after installing to fix the green line on the camera.

Do yourself a favor and stick with gingerbread cm7 or sense 3.0.

Hey eq I tried this rom for sister yesterday it starting acting weird where it kept showing the boot animation screen and my sister was kinda upset because she lost some important text she needed.
what I wanted to ask you before I wiped it I did a backup to see if we could maybe go back to retrieve her text messages but tried that but still no go with that.
Do you recommend any other stable rom that would be good for her?
Also do you know if text messages can be retrieved from a backup in cwm?
I know this is a lot but any help or direction would be greatly appreciated

What you should have done before even booting into recovery, for future reference, is made a backup of everything with Titanium Backup. Then you could have restored your messages to any ROM you wanted.

I have found the unofficial build of the ICS rom to be the most stable soo far. Everything seems to be functional and I havent had any issues with it. My phone literally is like 5 times faster than when i first got it. My battery likfe has tripled adter installing the shots of awesomeness kernel.
Man this thing is dope. I dont know if youre at all interested in what I have to say but if you are, please check out the link in the bottom, because these guys who made this deserve some credit for their hard work.

Give it a try, you wont be disappointed. Just maek sure to root your phone and everything before actually installing the rom, but im sure you already know this so theres no need for me to be telling it to you.
But yeah, everything is functional on this rom, you wont be disappointed... trust me

They did not state any details. Also, the srf tweaks are just old versions of generic tweaks and it did not have a unique status bar (weird that the op says it uses the srf status bar).

And why in the name of all things oats & apples would you post a rom thread in "general"?

Sorry :/
Hello Guys sorry for the late post. This rom is indeed an actual rom. We are a new user to XDA and accroding to them, We have to have at least 10 post before we can post in the Dev. Thread. Am i wrong.? I cant post the link on here because of the posting rules. This rom is built off of EI22, But we have tested on ECO5 and EB13 and it does work. We replace the link on our blog for you users having trouble finding the ROM section. We apologize for the Issues you may have. Check out our blog again and the link should be on the home page. Heads Up: It is a 4shared link and 4shared does require that you have an account. So please be mind of that. Thank You.
Explanation.!
And to all you guys keep asking why am i posting in the GENERAL thread. Its because i cannot post in the DEV. thread until i accomplish 8-10 post. We are new to XDA and are rookies when it comes to there guidelines and how there site RUNS. Just give us some time to gain knowledge of the site and i promise you, we will have everything on point.
Well sadly you all are 2 official OTA releases behind the curve and there is 1 leaked non-OTA release which is the most recent build.

We Know that. We've already researched the ACS Syndiacte Status Notes. But not all builds run properly on One's device. Actually some updates can screw up the phone. We built off the most stable update, And tweaked the performace, thats all. I know alot of people are looking for the next big thing. But there are some that are satisfied with what they have. This is only tweaks to what they have to make it run more smoothly. We are making ROMS now with the latest builds.

Actually i flashed the latest build on my Epic 4g. I even used QBKing77 instructions and it wrecked my phone. i have CWM 3.1.0.1. I currently run CM9 and it runs perfect. But since the latest build wrecked my phone it encouraged me to make tweaks on the most stable build for MY PHONE, And many others who are having issues with the latest build. Dont get me wrong i love The ACS Team's work, Its pure genius. Thats why im using some of there tweaks and not others. But anways thanks for the support and happy flashing. ^____^

It depends on what you/he wants. They all have their advantages. Personally I like the Dark Unicorn... but ROMs change quickly, so pick one, try it, and if you/he don't like, try another.
The 3rd thread about "Best ROMs". How many times does everyone have to say this: There is no best ROM. It's all based on what your brother uses and needs to be working. He could be a huge bluetooth user, and a ROM could have broken bluetooth. That ROM might be good for someone else, but not your brother. Come on...there are threads about it. And just look in the dev section of what looks best.
I just flashed the latest CM7 nightly. Honestly, its really great. I was all ICS for a long time, and was surprised by how blazing fast and super stable it is.
Edit: Saw your request for links below.

There you go. That was released 6-3, so it's pretty new
Sorry about the above rage. I've had a VERY bad day...I'd recommend MIUI

I know what you mean but I'm strapped for time and have no PC atm and search sucks on the app. If you don't like my post then just don't help or reply. I appreciate anyone who does though. If you look at my # of posts and thanks you'll see I'm not new to this and I was only asking for personal opinion .
Thanks for your reply though. I use to be like you and get mad but then realized that sometimes people just don't have the time to search.

Dude, TDJ put out some great MIUI ROMs, but that was a LONG time ago. Lanternslight and cnote have put out some great MIUI's since then.
Just sayin, hombre.

True, but they still run great. But cnote and Lanternslight have the regular updates, right?
I thought tdj's threads were deleted.... Made great roms though. The best rom over all is dark side sense in my opinion. I ALWAYS have a nandroid of it on my sd card

I get the Keyboard lag issue with CM nightlies, but I don't with BlackIce. That's what I'm currently running. I don't know if they do something to pep it up or if its in my head.
I know you asked for AOSP, but I'd also recommend the StockMOD ROM before they added Beats Audio. You could just run ADW Launcher but you get some of the bonuses of Sense. I know people like to grip about Sense but in my experience after about a week of using both, StockMOD was barely slower and got about an hour less battery life each day. Everything worked though and the Sense camera is much nicer.
