Please help me!!!!
this morning my XDA2 has decided that the speaker and microphone sholld be switched off permenently! :x
I believe that it thinks the headset is plugged in - but it isnt!!! (i dont use bluetooth)
I hev tried a soft reset and a hard reset (and also plugging and unplugging the headset)
Please help me - I only like to use the headset when listening to my tunes.
PS i spoke to the O2 data support helpdesk at 60p / min and it took them about 5 minutes to suggest that a soft / hard reset might cure it, otherwise they are clueless.
Is there any way to manually chage the profile from headset to normal handheld????
thanks!
PS my device i nearly 1 yr old - is this the kind of thing that I can expect to occurr more frequently as my XDA2 goes into old age?
i had this problem with my XDA 1. I had no idea what was going on but remembered it working last time i had the headphones in. A soft reset didn't fix it for me either. what DID fix it was ramming the headphone jack in and out really fast. After a few attempts it came back to normal I guess have to 'undo' the problem the headphone caused when it was in there.
  hehehehe
It works!!!!

Speaker and microphone silent because of headphone
Hello,
Glad you got everything working again..
Just a quick note - I was in a motorcylce accident recently and had my PPC in my pocket, - it was damaged at the the area of the headphone jack, which came loose, and caused exactly the problem you described.
To fix it I had to open the PPC up (instructions are available elsewhere in this forum) and then resolder the headphone socket to the PPC - Now it works fine again.
The upshot of this is that I think the microphone and speaker turining off when the headphone is plugged in is hard wired in - and also the headphone jack is quite delicate - it is only held on to the PC board by the solder connection of about 6 legs, and has 2 very small plastic locating pins, so go carefully with the jamming the headphones in and out.
Also when mine came loose - the back left of the 6 legs broke off - and without that connected back it still never produced sound through the speaker or mic., so it would be possible to permanently wire that in to make sound go both ways.
Mine is mute too did you do anything or did it just fix itself?
It eventually fixed after a couple of hard resets - first one didnt work, but after using the headset for a bit, i got the stuff from O2 to send it back for a repair. when u reset it again the problem was fixed. I reckon threatening it with surgery scared it into submission!
I had the same Prob at every Time who i hit my XDAII, or if it fall down.
After that i must push & hit it again,- sometimes 15-20 Times(!) and after that it works normal. It´s an "cold" point on the board,- the O2 Hotline knows this...

Same problem from yesterday! ..it is the jack ..if I move it down with the stylus ..the audio returns to the speaker..uff..
I don' wanna open it and solder.. too lazy..lol
Dead speaker
I have the exact same fault as described
only after losing about 3 calls did i realise it was the xda2 not some nutter that wouldn't speak!
fixed it with putting the headphone jack in then out etc..... 15 times!
it would seem like this is a design fault! as it is coming up to year for the xda2 should we organise o2 to recall the xda2's and repair this fault!
So I have this problem - only thing is Im in the USA at the mo and didnt bring my headset - is there any other fix as Im kinda stuck ?
Nigel
Husband had same problem.
Changing ring tone fixed it. Don't know why. Don't know how, but it fixed it!

I have the same problem, after calling with a headset, now my sound has gone ( Out of complete my XDA II ). Changing the ringtone didn't work for me...I am going to try to test the plug/headset way!
After 12 times my sound came back...so it worked for me!!!
It's the headphone Jack!
The problem is with the headphone jack!
I have had the same problem for months, sometimes it would stay without sound, always when I dropped it. Usually it returned after 1 or two days, but the last time I dropped it it seemed to be final... I've had no sound for more than a week - I'm using it as a PDA...
Reading the posts above, I decided to insert the pen in the headphone socket (as I don't have the headphones here with me), move it around carefully, and it wroked! Right now, it feels like magic, but that's it - I will probably have to get it fixed permanently, but for now it will do!
well i always have that problem in my phones... because i always hook them in my car stereo by the headset output.. and constant using of the output somehow makes the insides of it dirty.. believe me its dust.. a tooth pick would be very effective as it takes the dirt away.. blowing in sometimes work...
mine is also soundless
i was able to get some dust out of it....
but it won't work....
i don't have the nerves to ramm the headphones in....but isn't there another safer way to fix it....
plz let me know, (hard resettet 5 times.... won't work..)
btw, i tried to put some new updates on it....
but i can't find any, (i searched, but couldn't find anything...)
device information:
Rom Version: 4.01.12 ENG
Rom date: 12/22/03
Radio Version: 4.21.00
Protocol version: 32S54
It's a little bit out of date...that's why i need new ones (i think)
h0t_sh0t
bringing it to the accredited local shop would be the safest way.. maybe there's more dust in there.. you can also rewire it again.. like opening the PPC and soldering back some pins.. (if some pins broke off ..)
Same thing happened to my jam too.
Problem is; there's a little switch in your headphone socket, when you plug your headset it turns off the external sound, and when u unplug it should normally turn on the external sound. But if the switch is locked, it does not recognize that u unplug your headphone.
My solution is, plug-unplug your headset's plug (or something thinner is better) several times in different angles carefully to your socket try to touch the switch while your're playing something. Till u hear the external sound.
Mine is ok now.
(Sorry about my bad English)
I had the same problem. I sprayed a little WD-40 on the tip of my headphones... pushed it in and out for a couple of times and viola!
first question...
what's wd-40??
second question...
when i put my earphones in, i can hear everything...but I can't speak...
but when I unplug my earphones, and I scream in my xda... I can hear a little bit what i'm saying when i plug my earphones back in.
but it's very crappy sound, and when I slam (not to hard of course) my xda with the mic onto my desk (while recording) and i listen to it again, i can hear the drums....(the slamming) but I can't talk in it while using my headset...
has anybody had this before...?
third thing...
My uncle bought the XDA in Singapore about 2 years ago (when it just came out) so when i'd like to bring it back.... i'd have to fligh all the way to Singapore. (does anybody know a good shop/store who sells/repairs XDA phones...??? or is there anybody who can do this....?
thnx for all the help

Hi,
My exec is stuck in headset mode, it appears to think the handsfree is still plugged in and will only use the headset mic and earpiece even if not plugged in. I've tried a soft reset to no avail and i really dont want to do a hard reset as i have no way of backing anything up at the moment.
Any suggestions?
thanks in advance
Brodie
This is a fault that goes all the way back to the original devices...
The way to fix it is to get your headset jack, and try various ways of quickly but forcefully unplugging it. Happened to me the other night and eventually I managed to force it to recognise the headset was removed and it came back out of the speaker.
Cheers
Ant
sorted now, not sure if it was unplugging or not but i made & recieved some calls and unplugged it and it works!
thanks for the speedy reply and solution.
cheers
Brodie
I also have this problem today....but I dropped my xda exec on the ground and then all the sound is gone.....only headset and bluetooth are worked....
I think I damage the phone somehow.......
But I will still use it...

Thanx Anton. My XDA experienced the same problem and I was veeeeerrrrrry sad about it.
Then I came across your suggestion and, BINGO! It worked.
*Sorry for the duplicate post*
This just started happening on my JasJar today (system audio returned after poking the headset in/out a few times), after 11 months of use. Does this get worse over time? Should I bite the bullet and try to get Imate to repair it?
Please advise!
Damn it, I've got the same problem since yesterday
I can hear calls in handsfree mode (using the built-it handsfree mode) and with an earphone plugged in but not through the speaker besides the display.
Strangely, the internal mic works well (I mean, the called person can hear me). Is it the same problem you're talking about or has my speaker just collapsed? :?
.ox
EDIT: I've noticed that only the speaker above the display seems to be muted. The one on the backside of the display and the two speakers in the main body (when using handsfree mode) work. So I guess, the speaker's dead, isn't it?
2nd EDIT: After plugging a headphone in and out about 20 times and applying pressure on the display receiver it suddenly started to work again. I'm not sure what was causing this problem but even a hard reset didn't fix it so I guess it's a hardware (or firmware) related issue.
Same Problem
After working fine for months, with and without the earplug, my MDA Pro has started do the same thing--it's stuck in earplug mode. I've tried plugging/unplugging the earplug for about five times in a row--didn't help. Do I really have to do this 20 times? Jeez--I'm afraid of messing up something else. Could there be another solution? UPDATE: I just now tried plugging/unplugging 20 times--no help!
OK, the solution is the same as that for the loose USB port--send the MDA Pro to the fine folks at Pocket PC Techs and let them fix it. They replaced the earplug jack and got the unit to work perfectly with and without the earplugs. $75 plus shipping. They misplaced my stylus, but sent me a new one right away. I'm very happy with their service.
I've had this kind of problem with a Nokia 8310 which I've carried for three years. I believe it is a physical problem with the headphone socket which may be caused by lateral force on the jack while plugged in inside a pocket. Wiggling and unplugging the jack repeatedly makes the phone socket work properly. There is a small switch inside made out of a metal spring. All you need to do is wiggle it.
The phones which go silent after being dropped may be a different matter.
Hello,
I don't know why but today I woke up and the headset icon on my Desire HD keeps switching on/off every second. This is not only annoying, but it also makes calling impossible, because it keeps switching between monitoring a headset (there is none) and the cell phone's own mic/speakers. Interestingly, if I plug in a headset (such as the one that comes with the phone), the icon keeps flashing. However if I plug in some regular headphones (normal jack plug), it goes into headphones mode (same icon without the microphone) and I can listen to music.
What is the problem? How can I solve it?
Thank you very much!
PS: I'm running Android Revolution 5.1.10 and have ENG S-OFF.
ive got the same problem, i think its dust in your headset port..
I've noticed over the last few days that when I plug in my earphones it shows an icon of a headset, I have to pull the jack out and stick it in again then it shows an icon of earphones. I've only seen this now after upgrading to 2.3.3
It is due to dust in the headset port, clean it using alcohol or just a swab and it should be fine.

I have the same problem, not solved by cleaning the headset port ...
anyone knows the solution?
I had this problem a few months after buying the phone around 13 months ago, (it was brand new). I tried cleaning it and it disappeared for a while but returned within a day, in the end I had to send it in to HTC to be repaired. They did it for free because it was still under warranty, but I'm not sure if their warranty is 1 or 2 years (I know Nokia's warranty is 2 years, so it's possible for HTC to be the same), depending on when you bought it it might still be under warranty, but it's a pain reverting it back to stock to send it in.
Didn't realise this thread had been bumped because it showed up on the front page of the forum, sorry.
possible solution

i heard about replacing the earphone jack would work idk i haven't try it
I had the same problem.
After switching the headset-jack, it works perfectly.
I recommend to use your warranty and send your DHD to HTC.
They will take care of it.
Hey there everyone!
As my title says, my proximity sensor has gone crazy! It is of course a hardware problem but i need some help here! 2-3 weeks ago, i dropped my nexus⁴ in a bowl of dal , upside down (the phone's upper portion was affected only, the lower one was intact). For some hours the earpiece didn't work properly but the proximity and ambient light sensors were working properly and so were the camera(front and back both) and flash! Whenever i tried calling someone, the earpiece didn't work BUT as soon as i plugged in my earphones(with mic), i could hear and respond without any hiccups.. I thought it might be due to the phone detecting that there's an earphone already plugged in (before it was plugged in) to the phone , probably because the earphone jack got some dal (liquid) stuck in it. Anyways, i tried finding a solution for this and then i installed "SOUNDABOUT", an app which changes the way the phone's jack and earpiece and speakers behave (in short, controls what does what and media and phone call output) . I set the phone call audio to "earpiece" and media audio to "speaker" which works great and which solved the earpiece problem for me but now whenever an object comes in range of the proximity sensor, the screen turns itself off and turns back on as soon as the object is removed. This is making me crazy. However, when i switch the phone call audio to "earphones with mic" and restart the phone, the proximity sensor works fine but then no sound from the earpiece.
NOTE: When i restart the phone, for 2 mins or so, everything works flawlessly and works like it is supposed to, but after that it starts malfunctioning(maybe some service is causing this malfunction? )
I need your help with the following questions
1. Is it a hardware problem? (Since, the jack and sensors are one hardware unit)
2. If it's a software problem , can it be fixed without reinstalling the OS?
3. If it's a hardware problem, will i have to replace the jack unit?
Oh, and btw i am using Paranoid Android 4.6 BETA1 and Faux kernel.
Thanks!
Dal? You got goop in your phone. But it still sort of runs. I'd take it apart, take out the battery, then use the highest alcohol content you can find and rinse out the phone use at least 70% alcohol

It's a nexus⁴ -_- doesn't have a removable battery.. Phone is working perfectly...if you have a solution, please tell but don't crap the thread...thank you
if you don't know how to remove n4 battery - doesn't mean that it's not removable
and about your problem - as jd1639 suggested, try to clean mainboard, especially proximity sensor/ headphones connector area and maybe sensors itself

I know how to take apart the n4 and remove the battery and all but haven't done it before...maybe ifixit guide can help?
So should i open up my N4 and clean the sensors and the jack...i don't think there's anything wrong with the sensors as they work perfectly but the only glitch is they work all the time
Nevermind guys! I fixed it! all i did was turn off the sound about service and it's working flawlessly! Thanks a lot for your help anyways!
Just open the phone and remove mainboard to clean it with isopropyl alcohol. Don't wait until corrosion damage it completely . Also not bad idea would be take a look at sensors/headphone jack assembly ...
hi everyone,
The lower part of my g3 came in contact with water and i managed to save my phone by removing battery and drying it out. Everythings working fine other than the phone incorrectly detecting headphones all the time.
Things i have tried;
Hard reset
stock rom flash
plugging and removing headphones (headphones work fine when plugged in)
Any help would be appreciated as i cant use the phone without headphones
Thanks in advance!!
Here is a picture of the problem
If I were you I would disassemble the phone and using a soft toothbrush and some alcohol clean the PCB in the area near the headphone jack. there's probably some salt accumukated there which in turn resulted in a short circuit.
