Disclaimer
If this does not work the first time (and your wi-fi stops altogether), do not run this twice. See why (and how to revert your wpa_supplicant file) below.
Based on the instructions here.
This has been confirmed working on at least two devices, Virgin Mobile HTC Wildfire S's.
I have thoroughly tested this, and because I am poor I can assume no responsibility for anything bad that may happen.
If you program with batch files and wish to use this in something else, let me know.
Once you choose to enable ad-hoc on your phone, a backup of the original wpa_supplicant file will be made on your computer. (This is in the almost impossible event the new one does anything bad; but again, I have experienced no ill effects.) Save the first backup elsewhere for extra safety.
If you have any issues, post here please.
Description
This program allows you to set your Android phone up for receiving ad-hoc connections. If you have two Android phones and one has Barnacle, for example, and the other cannot connect to it, this tool is for you. It is also equally helpful in connecting Android phones to Android tablets; this was its original intent.

Requirements
A rooted phone
Busybox installed (if you do not have it, search "Busybox Installer")
ADB drivers on your computer
this tool (download below)
Instructions to use
Download this tool.
Disconnect all your phones from the computer.
Close any Android emulators.
Extract all the files into the same folder.
Run adhoc.bat.
A backup of your original wpa_supplicant will be made on the first run.
COPY It SOMEWHERE SAFE..
Troubleshooting
The ad-hoc enabler doesn't come with a warranty, but it does come with a backup: Every time you run this program a backup will be made and placed alongside the modded wpa_supplicant. NOTICE: If you run this tool twice in a row, the original original will be overwritten.
If something bad happens, simply re-run this tool and choose "revert". Your backup wpa_supplicant will be restored to your phone/tablet.

I'll try this later
Just tried this... Went through c:/adhoc/adhoc.bat, said that process completed successfully... Tried tethering phone to tablet... Tablet now says "unable to scan for wifi networks..." Prior to this I was at least able to connect to my home network, now nothing...
Oh dear. That's extra-unusual, especially considering this was made specifically for tablets. Either way though, your original wpa_supplant has been preserved before running the script the first time around... Take special care to backup the original and return it to its original place on your tablet.
Meanwhile I'll go look into why this is not working. On a tablet. From a tablet site. When I am most assuredly posting this on a phone using this file and batch program.
Also what is your tablet model/name?

Updated OP with troubleshooting instructions: I haven't yet added a failsafe on the tool to keep you from overwriting your first backup; not sure if it's necessary yet.
Heh... Seems I bricked my tablet. So, after I done everything it was ok until rebooting. After I switched it off it never came back to life. And even not possible to get to recover manager. Nothing….
Any Ideas?
not working on my stock rom (csl mi320)
i'm using another ad hoc fix and seems working
Worked a treat on my Galaxy SII - so much easier than fiddling around myself thanks!
Just out of interest is Android every going to sort out this ridiculous oversight?
Not working on AT&T HTC One X, no access to wifi afterwards, not even 'reverting' fixes the problem.

when i first start the app it asks for superuser permissions i allow and check the allow always button. so i'm 98% sure i'm good there. i have no idea why this will not work. any ideas??
Ive never had this problem, only when my phone was not rooted..
Hmm.. have u tried the regular stuff? Uninstall, reinstall, reboot, etc?
*This was posted from my Evo 4G using Tapatalkpro! Great app, if you want to browse and post through many dfferent forums*
Are you sure that you uninstalled the previous versions before you installed new ones? And if you installed a rom with it already installed, then used something like Titanium Backup and it restored Wireless tether, that can cause issues
yessir, i've uninstalled/installed every version of wifi router from oldest to current. i've also tried reloading my ROM 3 times with a different release each time.
the bizarre part is when i first got my evo i used unrevoked until i learned about full rooting and until then, my wifi router worked flawlessly. it's when i did the full root and nand unlock and installed OMJ's rom(with wifi built in) that the app quit working.
try this......
If you have root permissions, but still cannot start tethering, it may be an issue with either the tethering binaries or your tethering settings. From the main tether screen, try going to Menu->Setup->Menu->Reinstall binaries/configs.
when i hit menu from the main tether screen i get Settings, Access Control, Show Log and About.
So menu, then setup, once setup is open hit menu again and the option will pop up.let me know if it works.

Update your SuperUser Permissions app. ROM Manager has that, and you can find it on here.

I discovered this as I was following someone else instructions that didn't quite work and then messing up my phone to where my "com.android.phone" was failing but I was able to find the way for it to so I do not take full credit for this at all and if this has been known I do apologize. This mod does require root explorer (or similar app) and you need to be rooted.
1a. open root explorer and go to system/etc/motorola/com.android.phone/defaults.xml
1b. Long old "open in text editor" change "" to true
2a. Back out to root of phone then data/data/com.android.phone/shared_prefs and repeat step "1b" on "_has_set_default_values.xml" and " Settings.xml"
2b. Make a copy of " com.android.phone_preferences.xml" within that same folder
2c. Open copy file in text editor and repeat step "1b"
2d. Change file name of copy to " com.android.phone_preferences.xml.bak"
3a. Reboot phone
Now when you go into settings>wireless & networks>mobile networks you will be able to select whether you want 2G, 3G, or automatic which selects 4G. If anyone has trouble or anything PM me and I'd be more than happy to walk you through.
Oh and this should work on froyo and GB
*********************************
Looks like this does open the ability to select 2G or 3G selecting either or does nothing. I will continue to look into these files to see if I can make this work
*********************************
I got this far but now Im stuck. The selection can be made but the actual band change isn't occurring. If anyone much have some insight let me know and I'll update the OP.

Since the power control widget is a built in app this tweak unfortunately does not affect it. And since my knowledge is nowhere near a devs I wouldn't be able to make a rom with a widget that supports this mod.

How do I know if I'm really on 2G?
Hi, I have already changed its. But when I reboot the phone. All file in data/data/com.android.phone/shared_prefs are return to the original.
Can you suggest to me for solve this?
Thanks,
Sorry guys I just edited my instructions. You need to edit the .bak file for "com.android.phone_preferences.xml" because the system auto resets to the .bak file for this one so you're tricking it into reseting into the modded file

Thanks, I'll try it.

I too struggled a lot to find how to enable this and i installed navalynt's πCRUST v0.3 rom couple of days ago which had this feature enabled, so maybe it has been mentioned somewhere. Anyway, thanks for sharing!
It works on atrix 2.
Does this has permanent effect?
Thanks
Hi I am new to this forum and I'm not an expert, I really would like to use the webtop without a dock,i tried following the instructions posted here but nothing happens, I don't know what am I missing. Am I supposed to run the install file on my computer or on my phone? When I run it on my computer a black screen appears and some command and then I says to press any key and that my phone will reboot, but nothing happens. Am I supposed to do something to my phone?
I'm on att gingerbread, not rooted, I enabled debugging mode.
Thank you
You need to root and probably deodex

you run the script from your computer but your phone has to be connected and have all the right drivers on your computer

ok connect your phone to hyhour computer and make sure the computer knows it is connected
then run the script
good advice
If I were you I'd be VERY CAREFUL and investigate and learn all you can BEFORE doing any mods on your phone. Too many phones have been bricked (rendered useless) by running things you know little about.
I did that but the doesn't do anything, it doesn't reboot like it says on the script. I know it's connected because when I enable debugging I see the pop up screen for the internal memory and the sd card
Thanks for your concern I really appreciate it.what I like about this is that doesn't require root
Root
Hi
I also had exactly the same problem.
I wanted webtop, without really rooting my device.
It didnt work out. Also ran the script no reboot etc.
I then rooted my device, Fenny assisted me to create 2 files for the stock 2.2.2 atrix 4g (The older version of the os)
I copied them manually using root explorer, rebooted, and walla, i had the webtop working.
I still have those files.....
If you need them, PM me, its worth a try...
Greetings,
first of all, since this is my first guide, please be kind and for another thing, english is not my mother tongue so pardon eventual spelling errors.
I'am sort of a "flash-o-holic" and one thing that drives me nuts is everytime i flash a new rom, i have to reenter my saved WiFi-networks including their passwords. And since these passwords are really long, about 16 to 26 characters, it's a very tedious process.
But a found a solution or workaround, that i want to share with you.
First, grab your wpa_supplicant.conf file, usually it's saved under /system/etc/wifi/ (you can either pull it via adb or copy it with a root explorer to your sdcard) a save this file on your PC.
Now download your desired rom (if you haven't already), open it with a zip tool (i use 7zip and so should you ), navigate to /system/etc/wifi/ and replace the wpa_supplicant.conf file.

And that's it!
You can just flash it like normal via custom recovery.
Worked for me everytime. (=
Nice, I never thought about that. I usually restore this using Titanium Backup, but that requires getting TB onto the phone first. With your method wi-fi will be available imediately after booting.
EDIT: Except... that file is mostly empty. For me the file with my wifi data is /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
...or you can just backup your data using Google. it restores your WiFi passwords

I could do that, but i don't want to save my WiFi-Settings & passwords on a google server. It's silly i know but i'am kinda paranoid.

Same for me
Well, i guess the Main Argument against that would be:
When you need to restore from Google, you have to connect to wifi first, right?

Hello there!
Since the most recent guide thread ((that I found) [GUIDE] USB Reverse Tethering - New method) does is quite
complicated for many and requires root and for the sake of simplicity, I wanted to present a simpler alternative
to you here in a separate thread, which works without root and is not outdated.
If this violates any XDA rules, please close the thread.
-This method works 100% on Android 9. For other versions you need to check.
-Very useful for people whose wifi module is broken (like mine x.x)
I will attach the .zip here as well as pictures for a better understanding.
Requirements are:
-A working USB connection
-USB debugging enabled.
-A Windows computer
-adb
First, of course, we need to unzip the .zip.
In this case it doesn't matter where.

Second, we need to open the console and go to the path of the extracted .zip
CD path\to\gnirhtet-rust-win64
Third, we press tab 2 times in the cmd, space, write install and press enter.
When that's finished, we press tab again twice, space and write run and press enter.
Alternatively, if "gnirehtet" is already installed, you can use the .bat, provided in the .zip to start it.
That's it! You got reverse usb tethering!
thank you for sharing, i followed the steps but didn't succeed in getting internet
i think you should mention having adb in systempath or just extract your program in adb directory
my steps were
get adb fastboot and extract it
get your program extracted inside adb directory
start cmd normally without admin rights
execute first command in your post to install ( returned success)
execute second command ( returnt 1 at the end ) but no internet
Code:
2022-07-30 00:41:44.389 ERROR Main: Cannot start client: Command adb ["reverse",
"localabstract:gnirehtet", "tcp:31416"] returned with value 1
i should am running AOSP 7.1
