[Q] problems with freezing and random restarts after mango update - Focus General

Forced the mango update, which worked great until phone started freezing and restarting. Each time I open IE or Bing or most apps I get a restart. I reverted back to nodo and reinstalled the unforced mango...no help, same issues. Any advice. Please help. Getting new titan tomorrow and want to give focus to my daughter to replace her iphone.

Just got a refurbished unit Samsung focus.
I have a 16 gb card in it that worked fine in the other unit.
I installed my update normally (on rogers samsung focus) and it is now restarting randomly.
I may try to reset it with out the memory card and see if that fixes it. I'll let you know if it does, which would make my issue unrelated to yours.

Looks like a card issue. What version of the OS are you on?

Not a card issue, i removed the card and tried it.
Still keeps restarting, popped the card back into my old samsung focus and no issues with restarts , but that one has a broken proximity/light sensor. Guess the refurb is going back to samsung x_x
Both phones are running 7.10.7740.16
Seems like Samsung just sucks at making hardware
EDIT: Or i just have really bad luck with electronics...

maybe, just maybe the last sentence is closer to the truth... However, if you "know" that, you should avoid buying refurbs or "questionable" electronics
I never had any issues with second-hand Samsung phones (even after a year) or with new ones. And I can't say I'm really lucky

My Samsung focus i917R keeps restarting
Hello everyone,
Please be patient and bear with me while I try to tell you my story.
Background:
I bought the Samsung Focus i917R in September 2011, it had NoDo OS version that time. I read a lot about the microSD card issue and I really needed more than 8GB space on my phone. I had options to go with other HTC phone and not ever deal with Samsung ever but at that time Samsung Focus seem to be the best Windows Phone in the market to me (Amoled screen). I did a lot of research for a compatible microSD card and found that someone broke open an HTC (I believe it was HTC, don’t remember 100%) phone and found that it is using Sandisk class 4 memory card. So, I went with a 16GB Sandisk Class 4 memory card. My phone didn’t really give me any problem. I used up almost 17GB out of 22GB total memory.
Story
Then I updated my phone to Mango in end of Oct. I don’t remember if I started to have restart issue right after Mango update, but I noticed if I use my phone for a long time, like playing games or use the internet or use IM+ Pro or use Slacker Radio, it gets warm and then restarts. At that time I thought may be because I am using microSD card.
So, in Dec I formatted my phone and installed the newer Sandisk Mobile 8GB Class 4, bought it from futureshop.ca. I noticed I still have the same issue. This is very disappointing. I am only using 3GB space out of 15GB. So, I removed the microSD card and formatted the phone again. Now I have only 8GB and no microSD card. I still have the same issue. I will give you guys some examples of the issue.
Issue example:
If I run the Slacker Radio for over 10 min or so, the phone will get warm and it will restart.
Use the native Microsoft bing map app for a while and the phone feels warm and it will restart. I don’t think the phone gets hot or anything. This much heat for a mobile device should be acceptable. I was using iPhone 3G before I bought the Samsung and I don’t think the Samsung gets any hotter.
Let me know if any of you ran into similar issue. I don't know what to do. I bought the phone from a guy (he bought it from Rogers) and don't have the papers, not sure if it is still under warranty. The phone packaging was sealed though, it was brand new. Somewhat disappointed in Samsung.
I think I pretty much gave up on Samsung. I like the OS and I love the Zune pass. I guess that's the only reason I am sticking to Windows Phone.

HTC FREE HD2 Micro SD 16gb Class 4 card Upgrade

I dont know if you guys know this but HTC is replacing the stock 16gb cards that came with the HD2 due to a freezing problem for a New Samsung 16GB Class 2 Card for FREE. Just call them up and Press 1 and then Press 2 for HD2 and speak to a representative. Tell him your calling about your HD2 freezing when your using the storage card and he will know what you are talking about. He will ask for your serial and IMEI number and your info to ship it to you. So you will have a New 16gb Class 4 and your original Class 2.
Here is the number
1(888)356-2375
Call ASAP we dont know how long this will last
Just called and spoke to Megan in cust svc .. she said she has been getting calls about this .. THEY ONLY REPLACE THE SAME SIZE AND SAME CLASS if needed.
I asked if i could trade in the class 2 16gb card for class 4 of ANY size.
She said no ...
z
I dont know who is right. The guy I spoke to told me about the class 4. One of the representatives is wrong. I will keep you guys posted when I recieve my cards.
I just called.....
Well the Rep I spoke with was a big help and she told me that it will be a 16GB card and she didn't know the class.
Weird. Where did you hear this information? Do we have to send our current SD cards in?

I called the number as well... was told that there is no SD Recall?
Just called and ordered. It is Backordered as of 11:30 PST.
Here is the information I got from the HD2 Android Forum:
"Just wanted all to know, HTC has recently acknowledged an issue with the 16GB SD card that shipped with the US T-Mobile HD2. T-Mobile issued an internal bulletin to this effect and provided a US number (888.356.2375) to call to arrange to have the SD card replaced, from Level 2 to a Level 4 SD card. Alot of HD2's had the Level 2 card installed and this card was found to cause the phone to freeze. The Level # is indicated by a circle with a numeral in the middle of it. Usually on the upper right hand side of the SD card. When you call the number HTC provided they will want you to have the HD2 in front of you with IMEI and S/N ready. The unique thing is HTC has rescinded their policy to send the 'bad' SD card back so if they send you a replacement Level 4 card you will end up with 2 SD cards. (I'm sure that Level 2 card could be reused somewhere) This info is probably even more useful to owners that have installed Android Froyo 2.2 on their HD2 as I have. The ROM's are usually contained on the SD card itself and not flashed internally. HTC does indicate a backorder on the replacement SD cards (up to 2 weeks or so) Hope this helps some of you with the freezing condition."
I called 888.356.2375 and told the rep that I bought an HD2 which came with a class 2 card and its causing freezes on my phone. I then told her that my friend mentioned that HTC knows about this issue and is sending replacement class 4 cards. She said yes and then took my phone's S/N, confirmed that it is an HD2 and placed the order for the new card.
Called this morning - took IMEI and SN and said will ship the card via FEDEX in the next few days - no indication of card type - just 16Gb.
Rep wanted to know the approximate date of purchase and where. Also wanted to know the problem.
i just did it right now, and i will be getting my new card in 2 weeks as well! thanks for the great find and tip!!!
Do you think the new card will have all of the apps & files that the original came with?
*edit*
that was quick & painless
its not a recall. you gotta say you were having trouble with the old one.

When I first read this post, I thought you were advocating fraud. I went back and read the rest of the thread and realized it was simply out of context.
I have had no problems with my card, despite running Android on it, so I won't be calling in. This is, however, a great resource for those who are having issues.
It just goes to show what a great company HTC is in addressing this issue and making the fix available to their customers without needing a lawsuit to get them started (*cough* Apple *cough*).
thanks for the tip just called and they said i will get it in 2 weeks because they are backorderd

I read about the card issue in the NRG rom thread. Lets hope HTC will address the internal memory problem that the G2 appears to have.
Hello again my fellow HD2 owners Haven't been around this section in weeks! Good to see you all again...
Anyway, I just called the 866-356-2375 number and within 5 minutes they had me setup and a new SD card is on the way...I didn't ask about what class it is but I'll post back here when it arrives. I just told them that the card had been causing the phone to lock up and I haven't been using it as a result, and she took my IMEI and that was it.
Great find Eroc162, thanks!!
short and simple, took only 5 minutes.
damn I love HTC
I just called the number, and the CSR said they are not replacing microSD cards since it's a software issue.
called the number and got a free class 4 replacement.

Galaxy S fried, I don't know what to do

I don't know what to do. Backstory of this is, I bought the Droid 1 back in August. Went through 2 (refurb) of those before I switched to the D2 when it came out. Went through 6 of those for various reasons, all refurbished as well. The manager at my store decided it was time to try me on a new device, so I chose the Fascinate. I got the refurbished device in the mail and it worked great until I placed a call; the microphone was busted inside of it. I went back up to the store to place yet ANOTHER order for a refurbished unit. I got home last night and the phone locked up and overheated to the point where I burned my finger by touching it. I removed the battery and SD card and left it to sit overnight.
I just tried the battery, works fine in the other Fascinate I have. Vice versa, doesn't work. My SD card doesn't work anymore either, it just heats up to the point where it's too hot to touch inside the card reader (it also boot loops my D2, meaning internal error). Tried it in two other computers and about to try it in my old Blackberry.
I don't know what to do. I don't want any more refurbished phones from Verizon. Hell, at this point I don't want anything from Verizon. I'm tempted to jump ship because of all of this. I can't find anything in their policy about a lemon law or anything of the sort.
What could I do at this point?
Get another refurbished, sell the damn thing and pay for a brand new one lol.
Its not Verizons fault you got poop phones. The only refurbished i ever got from Verizon was perfect (D1).
Keep trying and you will find some light at the end of the tunnel haha.
Good luck

Been seeing a lot of sdcard issues. Caused me to go get a new one so I didn't get burned. Get it? get burned.
good day. From the Fascinate sporting the XDA app.
It also sounds like you may have power issues at home. Have you checked your power at home to make sure that it's 110V vac and 60 hz? That sounds like a possible issue too. You may be frying your phones.

I HIGHLY doubt you've been able to go through 6 D1's that had GENUINE manufacturer defects....its ALWAYS user error at that point....
The problem is lazy VZW reps (or doing it over the phone is pretty easy too) who don't properly troubleshoot your phone....
It sounds like a memory card indeed thats frying your phone.
And since you went from a D1 to a Fascinate, both of which have a 16 giger in them, I would bet you've been using this same card in all phones, thus solely blaming Verizon for an issue that both you and them didn't think of....
Get a new memory card, and see if that fixes it.
And try plugging in your phone at the store, and see it has any effect on it.

As would I, but I know what I'm doing when it comes to phones. On a side note, I see there was confusion. I went through two D1's before returning it and getting the D2 within the 30 days. The first D1 had a microphone issue out of the box. The other D2s all hardware issues such as screen not responding to touch, microphone busted, speaker busted, etc. It had nothing to do with software, and I don't mistreat my devices at all. Enough of that though..
I have been using the same SD card that came with my very first D1, the 16GB all the way until now. I wasn't aware that an external media card could cause the phone to have an internal error and overheat to the point of bricking both the card and the device itself, nor have I ever heard of it.
In any case though, my replacement unit arrived today and I took it, the old unit, and my card up to the store to which I was greeted with a brand new 16GB card out of the box for no cost at all. VZ customer service rocks, I'll never say otherwise, but I will have to question the quality of their inspection protocols when they're getting ready to ship out a refurbed unit.

Interesting you mention this, I have been using the same charger from my BlackBerry Storm [1] for all of my phones. It's never cause a problem before (I figured if it acted up I'd switch it out) but see the thing is, it wasn't connected to the charger when it overheated so I don't see how that could have happened. I see that perspective and I'm going to look into it. If that's the case, then I need the actual Samsung charger as I only have my D2 charger from the box.

Your BB charger should be exactly the same as the samsung. Both are micro-usb standard. In a world where everything works as intended this shouldn't be a problem. However, there is definitely something going on. You could be charging the phone on unstable power. The memory card could be bad. You have a verizon rep out to get you. Regardless, the probability of having as many factory defective phones as you've breezed through is essentially zero.
Unless you routinely dodge lighting strikes and meteorites during your daily commute. I suggest you do what you can to eliminate potential causes (or narrow them down).

[Q] Using a MicroSD voids Warranty?!

I just got off of the phone with AT&T tech support. I am having an issue with the buttons on my Focus randomly pressing themselves and so I called. They ran me through the usual procedures (restarting phone, updating etc) and then connected me to the Warranty dept to exchange my phone. Then they asked if I had ever used a MicroSD card, to which I replied yes. She went on to tell me using the MicroSD card, even if you were no longer using it, constitutes damage to the phone and voids its warranty.
I argued with her for a while, about how the phone CAME WITH instructions on how to use the slot and that it wasn't mentioned anywhere that it would void my warranty. She told me I could get a new phone at full price, or contact Samsung.
Was anyone else aware of this?
What should I do?
Same thing happened to me.
I even referenced the page in the online manual that states the Sandisk MicroSD Class 2 8GB card is supported, which I was using. They were absolutely no help at all and very rude about the whole thing.
The rep I talked to told me I had infected my phone with a virus because of the card. It's clear that they are quite ignorant and are following what must be a corporate mandate to void all focus that have any problems with SD card.
Bottom line people: if they ask if you use an SD card....the answer should always be: "NO, I have never put in an SD card."
Fortunately, Samsung was quite pleasant and fixed the phone for me. Only bummer was no phone for 3 weeks and their tracking system never worked so I had no idea what was happening with my phone until it showed up on my doorstep. The replaced the main circuit board. I think some have bad nand chips.
If you paid for your repair I would take this up with the store people and possible phone support escalating it each time until you get some relief.
I went to the store and specifically asked about a memory card for my phone. I showed them the sticker on the back and said that the phone MUST show it is logo'd for Windows Phone 7 and they pulled out and handed me a 16GB Class 2 memory stick. I proceeded to tell them that the phone manual said bad things could happen etc... and that it HAD to be compatible with my phone and they said "There will be no problem with this card, it will work in your phone"
If that doesnt convince you they are full of $hit then maybe this will:
http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-ph...TM)+-+Black&q_sku=sku4980540#fbid=mDVcGxoCjhm
Scroll down just under the phone pic and click the "Compatible Accessories" link. Near the middle of the page is a 16GB SH card that they freaking SELL for as compatible with the device. Changing course mid stream when you have a problem is a load of crap and they need to be called on it.
Everyone should call and say that they bought the phone becaue it had expansion capabilities and the phone was misrepresented and what is AT&T going to do about it?

yeah I totally argued with her about how I wouldn't have bought the phone if I knew that the expansion capabilities would void the warranty. And im not going through Samsung, they freaking suck. Not being phoneless for three weeks over a glitch that I can deal with, and I'm not paying for it either.
I asked if there was a way that I could file a complaint about this and the chick on the phone said no. I think that I am just going to call and ask for a supervisor. Or maybe I should go into a store? Everytime I ask somebody at a store about something like this they just tell me to call tech support...

Sure glad I haven't had any issues like this. I have a rev1.3 model. Using a 16gb class 4 generic SDHC card. Put it in, it configured, and I now have 22GB total memory. I was mad to find that I had to buy an extra battery online somewhere. They looked at me like I was crazy at AT&T when i asked for another one. They have a million different iPhone accessories, but none for anyone else. Their stores are garbage and full of useless people who do not know squat about their phones.
I was also unaware of using a microSD card would void my warranty though. It's the reason I bought this phone...b/c at the time, there were no other new phones with that ability. Got mine late 2010. Samsung should post something about this on their site though, because this would piss me off if i had issues and needed my warranty to replace the phone.
clarify with them
They are probably confused with the surround which will void the warranty. Explain to them that you read the manual in the book it states that adding an expansion microsd card does not void the warranty. Also explain to her that the slot is user accessible.
I too was told that putting an sd card in my focus voided my warranty. I sent it into Samsung to get reflashed. Never got nodo or pre-nodo update notifications I tried all possible hacks to get it to update. Att rep was a jerk. I even talked to a supervisor. Showed them on att.com the 16gb sdcard that I bought that's certified. And they still said nothing they could do.

My Focus bricked itself so I got a warranty replacement. I specifically told the woman on the phone that I had never used a memory card in my phone, even though I did for about 5 months. I had read this thread and didn't want to pay $415 for a new phone that I didn't even break.
Will they be able to tell that I was using one, even though the phone is completely bricked? The people in the AT&T store actually tried putting a card into my phone and turning it on when I brought it in, I'll just blame them.

Major G2 hardware issues

I just had to order my fourth G2 in the past six weeks.
First one developed a striated screen after a week.
Second one would not receive any LTE signal and 3G was often unstable.
Third one seems to get an LTE signal briefly when phone is reprogrammed and tries to do a profile update, but it never completes the update and LTE never shows again. Same instability when trying to get 3G. This one also keeps throwing an error message that it has a bad UICC card. Something about an invalid SIM card. No one at the Sprint store or any of the techs that I called had any idea about how to fix that last thing. And the tech manager at the Sprint Repair center was incredulous that I had found three defective G2s in a row. This last one was tested before I left the store with it due to my previous experience. When I did take it home (after ordering a new one) it was so annoying I just turned it off and re-activated my Galaxy S3.
Anyone else have any sort of experience or am I just lucky?
Your unlucky. But what if that store gave you phones that were returned previously?

4 phones in 6 weeks is unthinkable. FOUR???

That's what they are telling me.
The guys at the Sprint store claim that they can't tell whether it's a refurb or not. They say it's so new that they are probably all new. I doubt it.
I'm finding it pretty unbelievable. I know it's not a conspiracy or anything, but this next one had better be perfect or there will be a bit of a scene. I'm not walking out of the there without a 100% working phone.
what are you doing rhat causes this?
skinny jeans maybe with extra small pockets and extra tension on phone?
backpocket while sitting?
I'm also on my third replacement, first one had a bad screen it kept flickering while in a call, second one had radio connection issues, and this one I currently have has the same radio problems and also gets really hot sometimes. The quality control on these phones is bollocks at best, I will never get another LG phone again. It's a shame because I enjoy the speed of the Snapdragon 800 processor, the OIS camera is good and I like the IPS display
I have my 3rd phone coming on Monday. Got my G2 1 month ago and I am going on my 3rd. I love the phone but not sure I could deal with it if it breaks again. For me, I woke up, unplugged my phone, it rebooted and that was it. No wifi, no data, and just kept rebooting. Did a factory reset, which did nothing. So I flashed the 12b on with the LG Flash Tool which wipes out your internal storage. and still nothing. Called Verizon and they are shipping me another phone! Hopefully I get more than 2 weeks out of it! Can't keep starting over every 2 weeks.......

I'm also on my third replacement, first one had a bad screen it kept flickering while in a call, second one had radio connection issues, and this one I currently have has the same radio problems and also gets really hot sometimes. The quality control on these phones is bollocks at best, I will never get another LG phone again. It's a shame because I enjoy the speed of the Snapdragon 800 processor, the OIS camera is good and I like the IPS display

do you use original charger and good electrical outlet?
For the record, I never did anything crazy to them.
I only rooted the first one after the stuff started happening so that I could create a backup to try to install on the second.
Second and third never even got rooted, as I didn't want any bull about having anything that I did creating the flaws.
Each phone was never dropped and in a case it's entire life. Not a scratch. Only used stock cable and chargers (except when in the car).
My fourth one has been almost flawless and confirmed as a 100% new device.
I am having a small issue with the knock/on feature, but I think that's a result of the ROM I'm using now and the way I messed around with it. We'll see when I flash something new this weekend.

Same here, 3G is commonly unstable and keep disconecting, even when connected is very slow.
I have a major issue with reception as well: 2-3 bars in areas when all other phones has full signal strenght (used to have motorola on the same operator for 10 years and never seen a single bar drop in reception) Sometimes even looses reception. !This is the worst anthena on mobile device I'vee ever seen!
It is pretty useless on mobile data, as it never gets strong enough signal to browse
WiFi limited to 72mbps on 2.4Ghz wireless N network (unacceptable)
Maybe it's Sprint? I'm on TMO and LTE and connectivity in general has been blazing and never drops. And still on my first G2.
I've yet to read of this issue until your thread, so hopefully you're able to figure it out. Good luck!

MicroSD / TF card problems SM-G935F

Hello,
I've searched the fora but can't really find a solution and I am blehhh about this problem.
After starting up i can copy to and from my MicroSD/TFcard. But after a while, maybe 2 minutes there is the announcement something alike "failed to copy" but then in Dutch
I read about these problems but is there any solution or do we have to wait for Samsung.
Hoping you all can inform me what to do to cover this problem
Thanks for your help in advance!!
Regards,
Lockstra
Please note that this can go away for a few days but will come back. No matter what you do (hard reset = I did 8 times), 2 micro SD, one Sandish and one Samsung = same problem. Unfortunately, it is a hardware issue. If I were you, I would protect my phone with a case and screen protector (to ensure to keep full warranty of the device) and wait a few months to get a phone from a new batch. I have a friend who works at Samsung Canada and he anonymously told me that this is a known issue by Samsung who will not admit it and they will still sale the batch that was previously build with this issue. Once they get new batch, this will be fixed. Also, my assumption is that the issue will get worse overtime (sun, cold, bending, pockets, etc). Good luck.
Wow this could be a deal breaker.
