(Q)what should i do - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im going to root a friends mytouch4g using this guide http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Glacier:_Full_Update_Guide. But then i found out about bad eMMC chips and what not. What are the chances that his phone has the bad chip?Should i just save him the trouble and not root it just so he doesnt run the risk of his phone bricking.

There is a easy way to check if he does or not. Should be on the first coupe pages in general.
If he does have a bad chip there is a possibility it could fail. However, I know a few members who have rooted with the bad chip and nothing happens. The whole its gonna fail thing is a little blown out of portion. Albeit there is still a higher chance then the other chip. Btw with thr bad chip you can only use the gfree method.

well, you should check which chip he has first...
type this in terminal emulator (free download from market)
Code:
cat /sys/class/block/mmcblk0/device/name
if it comes out with SEM04G, then he's safe, that's the good chip.
if it results with M4G2DE, then you should let HIM decide. although he IS talking a risk, a lot of M4G2DE (bad chip) users have reported of having absolutely no issues with flashing at all after rooting.

So if I try the visionary root method and it fails that means I have to use gfree to root and that would mean it has a bad eMMC chip correct?

I guess you have never rooted a G1 or MyTouch. Some you even need to make what is call a Goldcard just to root. The Vibrant is pathetically simple.
it's my first android phone and it's really simple. Even a caveman can do it.

WORD.
......................
You think the vibrant is hard to root?
Try installing a Nand Android on a HTC HD2 for the very first time. It literally took me an hour and a half to research and install Android.
The vibrant is the only phone that I can root and install a custom rom without connecting it to a PC.
Yeah it was super easy... too bad all phones can't have Odin .

Takes 5 minutes to root a vibrant...if you don't know what you're doing.
The cliq and vibrant are a piece of cake to root! Android on a hd2 the first time , mytouch slide, mytouch 1.2 are hard as he'll to root!

You didn't just use the Vibrant toolbox? The Vibrant was cake. Way easier than trying to root the new EVO's.. At least last I checked they still didn't have an easy option to do that

partitioning it going back to rc28 putting weird commands in the terminal it was demonic to root a g1 in the beginning.

Lol yeah, I didn't root my g1 until I got my vibrant, I was too scared to but after rooting my g1 I looked into rooting my vibrant and wound up rooting both in the same day. The vibrant was so easy and quick to root.

Manually puttig in codes for partitioning the SD card was a pain too, when the recovery didnt do its job. HD2 was easy too lol, before the VIbrant i had a HD2 and Nand was easy
That's because you don't even have to root the gtab. Put clockwork and the rom on the sd, vol+ and power and boom! Instant gratification.
Check usb debugging-dl z4root app from 4shared.com-root
Takes less than 2 minutes.

I think you should just stop and not root your phone just from looking at how you've asked this question twice in the same section as well as in the dev section.
Having a rooted phone doesn't make you cooler or give you special powers no matter what your friends told you, trust me.

Well seeing how I'm 15 and (and starting football and powerlifting camp today) building my own roms and a tester for TeamRoyal it can't be too hard but really to the OP you can't post multiple times, its a good way to get your question dismissed by the community. But to actually answer your question, the easiest would probably be the gfree method which is stickied in the development page.

I agree the same. At least try to keep the thing in only one post.
To root my MyTouch 4G took me over a week, of reading extensive posts here on XDA. Until i got it with the Link that i Posted on your last Discussion.
So every step, from the beginning, slowly. When you see that something is not going right, stop, and tell us Exactly what is happening
And yes, PERMROOT Wont give you special powers to show offf to your friends. Most likely if you do something wrong, say bye to that phone or have ready 100 $ to pay someone to fix it for you.
I just want root to install custom roms. I had a Samsung vibrant before and it was so easy to root.

You people are funny with the whole root giving power thing, but I swear root gave me +100hp and eng hboot gave +100mp extra. But ya rooting is easy and you don't even need a PC. Story behind it...
I lost my HD2 (Leo1024) as it was my first dev-phone so I heavily modded it and few had personal things I never even released to public so now some prick walking around with it. When this happened dual core based phone the LG-Opt2x and Moto-Atrix (dual core) was still 4months behind and I couldn't wait for it so next best thing I got was MT4G (spec wise DHD-US model), so week before I got MT4G I did total run down from known issues with MT4G to root, ect. So I walk in to the TMoStore and the rep try to "sell" me MT4G so I told the guy save yourself some trouble I already know about the device and so we can skip all this BS and wanted to for it direct.
So I told him to open the box so I can verify it was superior display (by then we already knew about inferior SH model). So he started asking other silly questions how hard it was rooting and back then the meth was lil weird as you needed battery pull. Since I lost my phone they verified my account and gave me a new simcard free and provisioned my line on the spot. So I downloaded all the files needed from my phone for TheUnlockr meth to SDCard and rooted it in front of him using TempROOT (VISIONary+) and PermROOT (root.sh).
So what exactly is the easiest way?

Follow the TheUnlockr meth which takes 1min to root using VISIONary+ to obtain TempROOT and when you have it you can get PermROOT by running root.sh script.

Use that one. IS the easiest and asured way!!! One more time;.. you dont ned to ADB files, you barely need a PC only to transfer like ONE file to your SD card, y even told you what App to use instead the PAID app ( root Explorer).
Why better not ask to send your phone to someone and root it for free?!

NAND, as with any other type of storage, is efemeral. It will go bad some day.
Compared to say, Magnetic HDD's, NAND is very small lived. Reading does not waste it much, but writing, that's the killer.
We will have bad eMMC. Yet, nand drivers are god at detecting bad blocks and marking them as so. You'll loose some kb for each block, but it's not that much
Yes I do understand it will go bad someday its just that some desire z/g2 and desire s have bricked because of bad emmc so I'm just wondering if those were bad batches or if there are different models of emmc chips which are good and bad.
Sent from my A500 using XDA Premium App
You might be referring to another issue. On problem is emmc wasting it valuable life in the MTBF estimated time.
The other, is a emmc going bad WAY before MTBF.
I'm not aware of G2/Z problems, as i don't have any. Care to point a link ?

Yes that is my thread and certainly appears to be my case. I haven't found anything to confirm yet but my suspicious is that my flash memory is pooched. Does anyone know of any way of actually testing this out? I tried to use recovery e2fsck tools to run a badblocks scan but they didn't seem to run.

I cant seem to get rooted with this method?! Simple as hell but for some reason my phone wont perma root. I got visionary r14 select the first and third check boxes then hit temproot. Then (already put the proper root files on root of SD card)
I go to terminal emulator put in the commands then I get the not implemented error then it does it business. I turn off go into recovery as directed to check if s=off but nooooo s=on. Wtf? I'm using the unlockr guide. I already tried the xda one

[Q] Change Splash Screen After EMMC Failure?

Can you still change the splash screen even after you have an EMMC failure?
If you no longer have write privileges to /system then there is no way to change it.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda premium
nope... like eqjunkie said, once the chip is dead, you don't have write access to the phone anymore... so you can't change anything. sorry...
Aww man, I really want to change it but I'm afraid my chip will fail even though I do have the good chip
Is this a "just in case" for warranty purposes?
While there is always a chance of the chip failing, the "good" chips rarely do. Don't be scared.
