I want to down grade my mytouch 4g from 2.3.4 to whatever (2.1/2.2)?
I want to root my phone so can someone walk me through this step-by-step?
I cant understand any guide... trust me, I been lurking the mt4g sections for months and I am not good with guides.
so my first questions are how do i downgrade to the stock version from 2.3.4
and how do I "back up" my files?
please and thanks.
-from a forever noob-
edit: or maybe pm me?
Just follow that video in that downgrading thread on how to set up ADB. It's a really easy to follow video. Then you'll need winrar to unzip the files. You can get that by just Googling it.
Then the guide gives you commands to type. You just gotta follow the codes and that's pretty much it.
Once you're downgraded you can follow the really easy rooting steps.
Yup that's what I did follow the video it walks you thru everything...even letter by letter at some points it's great...to understand better I did read the guide too....the video pretty much follows along right with the guide

Where is the video? I cant find it.
The part I was kind of stuck on was where to place the the files once you unzip them it say's plat-form tools folder which for me is the short cut to Adb folder once it's in there and you place the PD15IMG.zip on the root of your sd card you should be able to figure it out here is the link good luck http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1178912

before you do any of this make sure you have HSPL on your HTC if you dont have it go here and follow the guide to install the HSPL not the roms...to check if you have the HSPL turn off your phone and hold the volume down and press and hold the power button until you see a tri-colored screen.
if you already have downloaded the andriod zip file extract the folder and copy the folder called "Andriod" to your SD card's main dir. use the file explorer on your HTC and goto the Andriod folder and run CLRCAD (it may seen like it did nothing thats ok) then run the HARET file...you may have to take out the battery 2-3 times following these steps over and over until you get it to boot up.
P.S. I AGREE with what tritran18518 said just not the way he said it..
i tried rooting my htc evo i used this video and this website
youtube.com/watch?v=NgOdvb8JBg
htcevohacks.com/htc-evo-hacks/how-to-root-htc-evo-4g-new/
every thing was good until i got to the part after i did the following
Go to your computer and delete PC36IMG.zip, then rename PC36IMG-MR.zip to PC36IMG.zip after i did this i booted it up but when updating i received this message

Loading...[PC36DIAG.nbh]
No image or wrong image!
Loading...[PC36IMG.zip]

No image or wrong image! anyways plz help let me know what to do! and if i just ****d up my evo ?
Find unrevoked3 and use that to root.
You didn't mess up your EVO. The problem that you're having is that you didn't properly rename the file to PC36IMG.zip so hboot is unable to locate it. You most likely renamed it to PC36IMG.zip.zip, which is a common mistake.
Now that being said, I recommend that you abandon this particular root method and use Unrevoked3, like what Papa Smurf suggested. It is much easier and works very well.
Don't worry it's almost impossible to **** an evo. Like seriously hard to do. The no image just means you didn't name it correctly, make sure it is exactly pc36img.zip. Not .zip.zip because extensions are hidden or something. That is why it isn't working.

I'm not sure if I'm familiar with that root method, and the link isn't clickable, and I'm too lazy to copy and paste. As Smurf said, Unrevoked is a pretty surefire and simple one click method to root your Evo. However, to answer your question, you didn't eff up your phone. It didn't find the PC36IMG. Did it ever prompt you to update, and select Vol Up to say yes? If not, then it just didn't find the update, most likely because it's named incorrectly, or it's not on the main directory of your sd card. It needs to be named exactly PC36IMG. Not PC36IMG.zip. The phone already knows it's a zip file, and will add the .zip. So, for example, if it was named PC36IMG.zip, and put it on your sd card, it would then be PC36IMG.zip.zip (as the phone reads it) and the bootloader won't find it. Also, be sure it's not in any folder's on your sd card. It needs to be on the main directory of your sd card. If those two criteria are met, it will find the PC36IMG and prompt you to update.

You are just one step away from finishing that method just finish it up. Do what this dude said. Put the pc on. The root of your sdcard, make triple sure the file is named correctly, and it I'll work.
ok yeah i think its because i named it with the .zip so i will take it off and see if its works ok and should i backup anything or is it to late because i already started the root process? and also thanks alot you guys for the help thanks alot!!!
Nope just rename and flash. Btw there really isn't anything else that could be going on besides bad name.

1. The instructions say to Copy ROM to storage. When I navigate to my phone hooked to my PC, I can't find the "storage" folder. Any help with this step would be appreciated
2. How do I boot into recovery?
I have twrp installed and phone's rooted. Just need to know the button config. to go into recovery to follow the installation steps. TY

LOL! Sorry I had too. Someone needs there Coffee You copy the rom to your phones storage like where your pictures,Music, and stuff are at. They didnt say anything about a storage folder.
and 2. Download an app called reboot recovery in the market place
You should be cautious when flashing anything if you were looking for a "Storage" folder.

LOL I know, I feel like a total noob for even asking. I have to have instructions literally step for step or else I lose confidence and don't follow through. I'm coming from an SGS2 that I rooted and messed with for the 1st month and never flashed anything since, so I'm pretty much starting over with this ROM stuff. Thanks for the help though!
EDIT: I'm gonna ask another noob question: Do I copy just the img file or the META & System folders too?

Dude! Never be afraid to ask (but if the answers are on the website and you didn't do a proper search, expect flame on!).
Anyway, assuming you are on AT&T, you should have downloaded a file called CleanROM-1.1.zip . If you didn't get that one, go here http://www.scottsroms.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=464 and download it. Check the MD5 to ensure the file is not corrupt. Do not unzip the file! Just transfer the file onto your phone - it doesn't really matter where, just remember where you put it. Then reboot into recovery (assuming you have already installed TWRP) using whatever app you like (I prefer GooManager), click Install, navigate to the rom you just put on your phone and you're good to go.
Good luck!

Thanks yea I did get teh 1.1 ROM and twrp is installed already. I just didn't want to go any further until I for sure understood the process. This feels alot easier then when I was working on the sgs2 and Odin. That and it's been at least 2 years since I've done anything like this lol. Thanks for the help, it looks like it's flashing now!

Install Windows 7 with bootcamp and use the Windows tools.
It's really easy. There is info in the Rooting thread. Download the file and follow instructions for manual method. I'm on my phone now, but I'll try to post a link when I get home.

Download IOROOT20, Extract it. There will be a Mac folder in the extracted folder. Use terminal, navigate to the newly extracted mac folder, and then follow the instructions for the "Manual Method" in the above link.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to get my own custom MP4 Files to work, and I'm not entirely sure why as of yet. I'm sure if I had a day off of work I'd be able to figure it out sooner, but with having to rebuild an entire Image file every-time I want to re-try anything, It is time consuming. I apologize for this release not being exactly what we hoped for, but I'll get there eventually.
I've found a few boots posted online do work, and I've just got to find out why. I've found these boot animations to be functional, so whoever wants to try these is welcome to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/xda-university/guide-set-video-bootanimationtesters-t2915445
STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
1.)
Visit this site: http://forum.xda-developers.com/general/xda-university/guide-set-video-bootanimationtesters-t2915445 and download the boot animation file. (Honestly I'm unsure how necessary this file is, if at all. However using this file, I did find a few boot animations successful both with and without it.
2.)
Follow Ekkoria's tutorial on modifying IMG files until the IMG file is mounted and ready to be edited.
3.)
Replace the bootanimation file within the bin folder, with the file you downloaded. (If chosen to do so, I believe it is not necessary.)
4.)
Take your copy of your bootanimation.zip file and replace the bootanimation.zip file in the Media folder. (Make sure you make a backup of the original.)
5.)
Use Ekkoria's tutorial to learn how to close and recompile the IMG file.
6.)
Flash your phone with the Mofo tool, and your new IMG file.

Keeps everything together.
I've ran into some difficulties. I believe I know what the problem is. I'm trying to get this done and juggle some personal stuff as well. I believe it's just the particular codec I am trying to use with my custom video. Basically you follow the guide that @Ekkoria posted, and replace the .mp4 files with your own file. I've already successfully replaced them, and my phone has already booted with the new animation. However now I'm trying my own files I've created, and I'm not sure why, but it keeps skipping over my own boot animation. I'm guessing it's a wrong codec.

I watch the video and that boot animation is sweet. The audio went well with it.
Just flashed one of them called COLORFUL HEXAGON and damn does it look pretty. Although it doesn't go full screen since the ColorfulHEXAGON has a different color backsplash
