[Q] Color Banding Samsung Focus - Focus General

Is there really no fix for the color banding in Mango? It's clearly evident specially with the Slacker app's flash intro. Also, using WP7 Bench, the color banding is sickening. This was fixed with the reg hack in NoDo and now it's back.

I guess there isn't a fix since the banding is still apparent in the Focus S!

Devs should update their apps. Read here.

As stated here, the issue actually IS fixed in Mango but it is now up to the app developers to update their apps to take advantage of it.

Have a look (not my work, just wanted to share)
This little fix lets you adjust the colors, so I thought you would be interested.
It does seem to screw up the camera (only white preview) , but other than that it works great
howto: flash the zip in CWM and then install the apk...
so when the camera bug gets sorted it would be awesome

isn't that what Supercurio's Voodoo Color does ?
where can I acces the voodoo color settings?
I use darkys rom (9.3) and voodoo should be included but I only find an Voodoo control app which adjusts the sound but not the color.
In CWM I can only adjust lagfix settings?
You can use Galaxy Tuner for that.

the Voodoo Control App includes the settings
you only need to switch to a kernel which includes newest Voodoo Color changes
(dunno if it exists for 2.2* kernels though)
Well I just installed the latest Voodoo kernel (5.4.1) but no changes
If I'm not wrong that voodoo colour app only apply to nexus s.. Not available for 2.2..

it applies to Nexus S and SGS using CM7 (the kernel-sources are based on Nexus S sources)
Apparently non of these works for us, so we're stuck with the bluish screen

from what I can gauge from all this, is that certain parts (screens) used by Samsung were not capable of screen variations in/for later builds as such they totally declined further upgrades for all. This would be common in manufacturing the initial device (galaxy S) as trial and error would play a part in releasing the most cost effective product and the part used coming from different sources. The Galaxy S had 20 versions, meant for different locations and pricing, so the componaents would be from from various sources, some of top quality and others of lower grade going to lower priced models meant for third world locations.
so it may be wise to see when and where this models having blue screen problems are cropping up most.

That's a very interesting thinking.
I just found out that this problem appears to be a known issue which is caused from incorrect calibration data which exists in some devices and affected by cyanogenmod 9+ (the later 9 ROMs, some of the older don't have this issue)
I think I'll post a new thread to help people understand this problem and its origin, and in the same time I might ask them their model and location, according to your great suggestion.
Thanks again!

bluish screen - dark blue tint / hue after flashing AOSP ICS and above on GT-I9000

There's a known problem for a little amount of Samsung Galaxy S GT-I9000 devices that are getting bluish screen after flashing AOSP Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.x) and above.
By bluish screen I mean that there's a dark blue color, a blue tint / hue all over the screen.
This bluish screen appears everywhere in the ROM, in the recovery, and even when charging the phone while it's off.
According to DerTeufel1980 and pawitp, this issue is caused by the updated framebuffer driver of the Nexus S in the CyanogenMod 9 kernels, and the actual problem is that some devices contain incorrect calibration data.
I posted a thread in which I summarize all I know about this issue.
This issue is fixed thanks to pawitp.
We can flash this fixed CyanogenMod 11 nightly.
Any release from now on will be updated with this fix.
There are detailed instructions in pawitp's thread - [NIGHTLY][ROM][4.4] CyanogenMod 11 for Samsung Galaxy S
This is the official thread of CyanogenMod 11 in this forum.
Please note that in CyanogenMod's download site we should flash any version that is newer than cm-11-20140211-NIGHTLY-galaxysmtd.zip which was posted today, the 11.02.2014, at 04:51:57 (according to the "Date Added" column in the download site)
I'd like to appreciate pawitp for his willing to help and for his truly tremendous effort to the community.
Thanks a lot!

Galaxy S II Unresolved Bugs Thread

The purpose of this thread is to consolidate a list of all the bugs in the Galaxy S II which are yet to be fixed by Samsung.
At the outset, kudos to Samsung for not only bringing us this awesome phone but also showing its commitment to support it by bringing out frequent updates (3 in the last month itself)!!! Some bugs which are found in various forums and threads are yet to be fixed.
So I thought to start this thread so that (maybe & hopefully) someone from Samsung support can look into this and address these in the next update(s)...
So here are some that I know of...please add yours (I will try update the first post with all), and also post if any of these are resolved so that I can delete them from the first post.
Definition of bug (for purpose of this thread) - is a bug which is widely acknowledged and reported as occurring in the stock firmware - and does not includ bugs experienced by only some users (which could be due to specific apps installed by such users).
These bugs exist as of update KWE7...
1. Android OS using up battery - still shows to use as much as 20% of battery
2. Third party keyboards (such as Swiftkey, Gingerbread KB, Smartkeyboard) - text prediction does not work in default email app - compose mode (probably because the field is defined incorrectly in the firmware).
3. Slight lag in waking up from lock screen.
Random restarts. Used my tracks to track a six hour walk this morning only to find the phone had restarted just before we got back to the car. This resulted in all the data being lost. Not impressed!

Folders not updating as shortcuts on homescreen
Regarding random restarts I haven't had a single one in over two weeks of constant use. Perhaps it's caused by an installed app rather than anything provided by Samsung?
As for my gripe, the classic wifi signal strength would be the main one although it doesn't really effect my use of wifi so it's no massive deal. Another issue would be how hot this thing can get but short of underclocking the CPU I can't see how that could be properly resolved.

Banding on gradients UNACCEPTABLE.
GPS not accurate compared to other phones (might not be fixable with software).

I also agree, how come the banding is so obvious on this. The screen is great, a very nice upgrade to the previous amoled. It would be nice to really see no banding on a screen this caliber...I know it can be fixed with a software update, but still. Bad samsung, baaad!
And one bug that would be nice to fix is the wake up lag of the lockscreen. Mine takes 1-2 seconds depending on the situation. Tends to get a bit annoying.
I thought the banding was due to the depth currently being 16bit. Quite why Samsung released the phone with this colour depth is another thing but if it's true either Samsung themselves or a custom rom will change that eventually.

I am finding that in Berlin or on the O2 network, my SGS2 is quite slow at pinpointing my position. My old iPhone 3G was about the same speed and did a better job at finding where I am.

I am on KWE2 (battery usage is 80% for Android OS) and I rely on third party keyboards as I require Catalan. I haven't found one yet that really works well.

Yeah it's not a display issue, more of a software issue which I'm sure supercurio will work his magic on.
Not had any of the bugs the OP had put forward, still working through battery life and the colour banding is annoying but apart from that this phone has been awesome, never had a random reboot either.

One unresolved issue is that Samsung doesn't provide an update method other then using Windows. I haven't got Windows nor will I have a Windows machine. I know I am not the only one either.
Did a quick search and couldn't find this...
If I create a calendar appointment on my phone, and set a reminder, it doesn't appear until I clear the ram from within task manager!

Why do I see so less threads about the color banding issue.. ? Why don't people worry that much about this? Will this get fixed because it's VERY VERY annoying. I payed €500 for a phone that is not even running on a 24bit and I'm alrdy on my 2nd SGSII ... Thinking of waiting for the Nexus Prime ...

Now that my battery life is incredibly awesome thanks to kg2/3, I really don't have anything to complain about.
The positives of this phone greatly out weigh the negatives which is only one thing I can think of.. Some of my wallpapers look ugly because of the banding.
I think I can live with that.
Its a minor issue and only noticed with some loading screens like angrgbirds and xda app and certain photos.
I just love how people turn a decent post into a threat like the nexus prime.
L a little research would have told you the nexus s had same issue and later fixed.

If you don't look for banding or yellow tint, you'll never notice them. Recommend for new users to not look for these issues
Nexus s had the issue fixed because of outcry. Meek sheep in here advise to fix the problem is to ignore it. Not cool at all.
And its not a minor issue. For those of us with eyes it is glaring. And don't tell me that with dual core at 1.2 and 24 bit the things will grind to a halt. I don't buy it.

What "banding" issue? Mine is fine.... I guess if I "look" for issues I will find them. Then again the positives far outweigh the negatives. A little gradient here and there is no matter. Some people are their own worst nightmare with their "anality" Probably have their devices wrapped in armor lest a little nick or scratch appear during normal use .......How do they sleep at night?

Besides xda loading screen and angry birds I don't see it often enough to cry about. I've taken 500+ pictures and have viewed 100s of webpages and I don't see it being a major issue.

Secret wallpaper both versions, nexus s wallpaper, most penguin games, ubuntu wallpaper, pretty much anything that uses gradient.
If you're primarily browsing of course you wont see it cause its white page with black letter's.
And come on original sgs does not have this issue, nexus s had it but it was fixed. What is wrong in expecting it to be fixed on this phone or not have it in the first place.

Color banding? Don't have it.
Colors are incredible on my SGS2 and shades flow very smoothly. Best screen I've ever had.
yeah I've used a number of roms on my phone and haven't noticed any banding... I'm wondering if this is a hardware specific thing?
The default background image on the Go Launcher exhibits significant banding. The issue goes away when using CM7, currently this isn't a solution as CM7 is severely functionality-impaired at the moment.
A fix would be appreciated, it's a minor irritation though. Seems a bit silly to have such a powerful device with such a great screen and then run it at a lower bit-depth.

Yeah, because the problem IS there, anyone saying "I don't have it" or "it doesn't exists" is either ignorant or lying, because it's a FACT the problem(or whatever you want to call it) exists. The purpose of this topic is rather to ask to people how they live with it/what they think of it.
My 2 cents is that it's quite annoying. Now I see it, I notice it everywhere, games, apps, wallpapers. We'll see how the Tegra-version of the Galaxy S2 with SLCD screen will manage color gradients - if banding still occurs, we can be quite sure it's software-related, if not, there's more chance for it to be hardware-related(though not sure).

Are You Having Problems With Auto Focus?

I've noticed that a lot of people (myself included) have an issue with the camera's auto focus. The problem is that most pictures will go slightly out of focus. Even when touching the viewfinder to focus manually you can see the picture focus perfectly before going slightly out of focus and "going green" to indicate it thinks it's focused correctly. For me it seems that around 70-80% of photos are slightly out of focus. Several users on Reddit have also reported this issue.
Have you also noticed this behaviour?
