Kies Driver issues on W7 PC - Desperate!

Hi all
I cant seem to find a definitive answer to this and Samsung support have not been very helpful.
When I try to install the drivers for the Galaxy S when connected to Kies I get a driver failed to load message.
It seems to be the MTP driver.
This is on 32 bit W7 laptop.
Does anyone have a solution to this? With Froyo coming but only via Kies it is becoming a bit desperate!
Thanks in advance
Simon
you are not alone my friend, everyone have grief with Kies
after installing Kies, try the option to Install Driver inside the Kies app
see if that helps
next alternative is to install Android SDK drivers
There seems to be a lot of issues with Kies. Mine is 'MainStage has stopped working'.
However there is little, or no, support for it. Loads of Kies questions and reported issues have gone unanswered on this, and other, Android/Samsung forums.
I've just managed to get the Australian Kies release working on my XP laptop. 5 or 6 installs and uninstalls, cleaning folders out from bad uninstalls, looking for reminants left behind. It took ages, but now at least I managed to get it working and clean my Orange SGS and flash it to JM1.
Just going to copy and paste the tips I wrote up on VF when I'd wanted to use kies to upgrade firmware:
Yakumo said:
Kies direct download link : downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/SW/201009/20100903113039859/Kies_1.5.1.10074_45.exe
This is the most up to date version as of writing this, don't use the auto updater it can take 2 hours, ridiculous update system going file by file for 10,0000 files instead of a single download than unpacker.
Install Kies, then click kies at the top left, and with the phone not plugged in select driver recovery. when that is finished plug the phone in.
If you still have a problem with it connecting, with it looping the MTP connection on the phone.
the MTP connection bug has been identified at last and though there isn't an official fix yet, it's not too hard to sort out yourself
filenames with an extension of longer than 16 chars on your SD cause the MTP problem, so anything after the last "." on a filename that is longer than 16 chars.
I think the largest cause of this is probably the '.thumbdataX-XXXXXXXXXXX' file you will find in "DCIM/.thumbnails" with any file manager app. You can just delete this and then try connecting
I deleted that file, and the entire TunnyBrowser directory, and the SoundHound app entire cache directory.
This was the first time I'd had the problem since I got the phone and wiped my SD card, but I hadn't been taking photo's till recently, I have a lot of other apps installed. Clearing those 3 things fixed the problem for me immediately.
Once I had done that I was able to install the JM1 firmware successfully, the phones auto reboot after flash seemed to fail after the samsung logo came up - after leaving it a long time it didn't progress, but I pulled the battery out for 30 seconds and the phone was fine after that.
I had backed up all my apps with ASTRO file manager before the install, and contacts with kies, but I did not have to do any restore after the flash in the end. all contacts and apps were still there.

Have you tried Kies from Samsung Australia? They have the latest version (1.5.1.100853)
Meh, my Kies just killed itself, decided to update and now it bombs out every time I connect the phone, tried rolling it back, but its still screwed.
How hard can it be?
I originally posted a fix, but the server rollback killed it.
So here it goes again
Download the new version from australia
Then uninstall the old version from your PC
Then delete the \kies\ from \program files
Install the new version of kies from australia
Done

SGS problem...

Hello anybody,
Sorry if my question is the same as the previous post...
I have my SGS from August and already updated to official Froyo which I have a few problems as below:-
1 - The contact listing of alphabet list missing character such as H, N and etc.
2 - I tried to copy back my backup contacts from my PC using Kies, but when it connected to kies, the contacts in my phone did not display. When I tried to transfer contacts from my pc to the SGS, it seems that it cannot communicate with the device. But, I can see and access all folder for my SGS from my PC.
3 - My SGS become a bit lagging when I updated to Froyo. In Eclair, my phone is much faster than in my Froyo now.
This is my 2 problem that I need help with. Any comment or suggestion?
My SGS is sim free from Three (3) and is in official Froyo. Never root my SGS...

Ok here we go
1. Missing letters is a bug in froyo
2. I had same problem. Think its a problem with kies. Best is to save all your contacts in Google then sync your contacts. That way if you ever lose your phone your contacts are always on google ready to sync again.
3. Try a few reboots to let froyo settle in. If that doesn't help go for the one click lag fix in the market.
Hope this helps clear a few things up.
Thanks for the comment and opinion...
Really appreciated...
Any other comment or opinion regarding the problems...
hi there
1st - i have just solved this annoying problem of contacts alphabets, the answer is here in the forum, i have attached the file and you have enter the recovery mode and apply this, i suppose that you know how to do it. after that the contacts problem will be solved.
2nd - to connect to samsung kies successfully you have to unroot the device, disable any lagfixes and make TouchWiz launcher is your default launcher, after that samsung kies will detect your phone.
3d - to feel that your phone is fast you have 2 options, either download and install OCLF from market or do the voodoo lagfix, or install a custom ROM which is better in my opinion and faster than the official.
that's it buddy i have answered all your questions if you need something just pm me
Hello ghallab and others,
This SGS phone never been rooted... It is still pure as I got it...
Any one lag fix application that you or other recommend in the market?
For the contacts fix, I am not really sure how to do it. Could you explain details for fixing this?
Thank you to all that have give the opinion and comment.
Others opinion still welcome...
rename the file update.zip and copy it to your phone's memory and shutdown your galaxy
press UP+HOME+POWER to boot in recovery mode
navigate up and down using the volume keys to apply update.zip and select it using the power button , it should be successfully completed, restart your phone and your problem should be solved
if you are using any home replacement app like Launcher pro or Adw launcher you have to clear the defaults and make the twlauncher is your default, to make Samsung kies recognize your phone
Hello again,
My phone is totally original and I not used any of the pro launcher or any other based application. I am originally using twlauncher (Samsung one).
My phone is recognized by Kies, I can check the firmware update. But, not yet try to used the my computer or to transfer any data from PC to phone.
How can I restore to phone memory? Is it inside the internal sd memory?
Thank you again for all the help.

Delete Google

#1- My grandson installed Google market on his A7 but doesn't like it. Is there any way to delete it?
He tried clicking on the restore factory settings, but when it starts-up again, it is asking how he wants to set-up google. He still shows Build Number as Elocity A7 Dexter Mod.
#2- Is there no way to get A7 back to the way it was, without Google?
#3- If it cannot be changed back to PBJ8000.2.0124, then we will not be able to install any future updates from Elocity?
#4- Why doesn't the restore factory settings change it back to the settings when he first received the A7?
Any suggestions please? He is really frightened that he did something wrong by installing Google and now cannot get the original settings back.
Thank you
Alice
ADD-ON: Think I figured this out for him. I downloaded the PBJ8000.2.0124 again and put that in the System Update and it seems to have loaded and don't see Google any longer.
Would appreciate any responses to my questions though as to why it didn't go back to factory settings when I clicked on it. And what would happen to future updates from A7. Would they overwrite the DexMod? Confusing indeed. Damn, now I can't find the Micro SD card. I don't remember taking it out of the slot, but when I look in there I don't see anything. Don't believe it could have slipped deeper into the slot as I put in another Micro card and it did go in. Doesn't seem that the A7 recognizes this 4GB card. The one we used and now lost was 2GB. Looking all around now for the small card. Can't blame grandson because he is not here.
1 the original firmware would have to be reloaded.
2 yes there is a way ^
3 no updates from elocity but the xda builds tend to be faster and more up to date than manufacturer builds.
4 that option restores the settings. not the firmware. answer 1 would take care of this.
He can relax he didn't do anything wrong and nothing is damaged by this action. Actually the manufacture did something wrong by not having the google apps in the first place.
original firmware can be loaded by following the instructions in this thread.

[FAQ] Common Issues and Solutions for SGT7.7, now with JB (12 May 2013+)

After seeing similar questions get asked and answered several time over, I thought this might be helpful (not least for myself). No particular order for now. Feel free to propose additional Q/A or edits--I'll credit accordingly. Thanks to our moderator (original_ganjaman) for making this a sticky.
This is meant to be a quick reference that either briefly answers a question or links to the answer--for issues with more or less known solutions. This is not the best place to post new, previously unanswered questions.

JELLYBEAN (Added 12 May 2013+)
Q1: Can it be that the wait is over?
Indeed. Some ten months after the ICS update to our beloved SGT7.7 (and the release of JB into the wild), the Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.2) update has finally arrived. As of now, the ROM for Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, and Malaysia (PDA= P6800DXMD3, CSC = P6800OLBMD3) is available; and only for the P6800 (not the P6810). If you device came from the appropriate locations and have an appropriate stock ROM, you should be able to update via Kies. Else, download the file from Sammobile.com (search for "P6800").
The two main methods for flashing the ROM (not counting officially via Kies) are ODIN, and MobileODIN (requires a rooted device before flashing). Instructions for using both can be found here. Flashing with MobileODIN can be done preserving root, which is convenient. I have upgraded my SGT7.7 (Hong Kong model) with the Singapore ROM, using MobileODIN, wiping cache and data (thus losing my old apps, etc.), but preserving root--apparently, doing it this way can help avoid some potential wifi issues (reported in the forums), and battery life.
Q2: What languages are available in the SEA ROM (PDA = P6800DXMD3, CSC = P6800OLBMD3)?
As the ROM is meant for Southeast Asia (Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines and Malaysia), the available languages are: English (UK), English (US), Bahasa Indonesia, Bahasa Malaysia, Tamil (?), Tieng Viet, Korean and Chinese (Simplified). A workaround for getting additional input languages is described in this post. Alternatively, you can also install swype (from Play Store), which has the option for downloading ton of additional input languages.

ICE CREAM SANDWICH (Added 6 July 2012; edited 27 July 2012)
Q1: Whaa...?
As of the time of posting, the Android 4.0 ICS upgrade is only available via Kies for devices from Austria, and as more recently, Hong Kong. However, it is possible to download a copy of the respective ROMs from sammobile.com--search for "P6800" (3g/wifi version) or "P6810 (wifi only version). The .zip file is 590+MB. Be sure to get the correct ROM as the one for the P6800 will not work on the P6810 and vice versa. The ROMs do seem to work on devices from a variety of countries (not counting the Verizon 7.7). A list of languages supported in the Austria ROM can be found here. See here for discussion of the Hong Kong ROM.
The two main methods for flashing the ROM (not counting officially via Kies) are ODIN, and MobileODIN (requires a rooted device before flashing). Instructions for using both can be found here. Flashing with MobileODIN can be done preserving root, which is convenient. A detailed and guide using ODIN can also be found here.
It is also possible to flash with HEIMDALL--but just make sure that it is not Ver. 1.3.2 (1.3.1 works fine). The main bits: heimdall flash --cache cache.img --factoryfs factoryfs.img --hidden hidden.img --modem modem.bin --recovery recovery.img --secondary-boot Sbl.bin --kernel zImage; then CWM can be flashed with heimdall flash --recovery recovery.img (cgm999)
Flashing the ICS Rom over a STOCK Rom (both rooted and unrooted) preserves settings and most of the third-party apps, i.e., wiping is not required. (All told, this is also probably the safest way to proceed.) Mileage varies if flashing over non-stock Roms. (UPDATE--wintermute000 writes: "...doing a clear data/factory reset in locerra's Clockwork Recovery is 100% safe, the brick bug affects STOCK recovery.
More information on the brick bug and whether it affects ICS on the 7.7; also this.).
Some of the issues involving missing or non-functioning stock apps seems resolved if the a factory reset is done after flashing (settings>Back up and reset>Factory data reset; or when off, hold volume up and briefly press power to access option to factory reset). UPDATE--WildmanJoe writes: "...following a suggestion from another member on the board, I have found that it is not necessary to do a factory reset if your stock apps don't work. Just go to settings>applications and clear the data for the stock apps that don't work. It is tedious, however, it eliminates the factory reset brick risk..."
ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT YOU FLASH AT YOUR OWN RISK AS IT IS POSSIBLE TO BRICK YOUR DEVICE (see this discussion, and this.)
See here for a database of successful/unsuccessful upgrade configurations. (Do also contribute your own experience.)
Q2: What's it like?
As anticipated, the tab is way more responsive with ICS rather than Honeycomb. But having said that, ICS for the SGT7.7 does come with Samsung's 'enhancements', which means touchwiz (and no stock ICS Launcher). The Email, Contacts, Calendar ("S-Planner"), Messaging, Clock, etc. apps are also from Samsung. On the bright side, the unable-to-write-to-externalSD problem seems solved.
Q3: How do I modify the looks of it?
As with Honeycomb, an alternative launcher is still recommended (unless you have a special love for touchwiz). Possibilities include the old favorites ADW Launcher Ex, Go Launcher, LauncherPro, etc., but now also including those that only work with ICS and above: e.g., Nova and Apex. Furthermore, you can also install a status bar that looks (mostly) like stock ICS with this mod.
Q4: Can I install stock Google apps?
Search for "Android 4 ICS Calendar", "Android 4 ICS Messaging SMS" and "Android 4 ICS Launcher" by Tim Hutt in Play Store.
Q5: What about the Browser?
A Samsung tweaked version. You can always install Google Chrome (Play Store)--but this one does not work with flash--or Dolphin HD.
Q6: What about the keyboard(s)?
Comes with a Samsung keyboard, swype, and voice input. The version of Swype that comes with the Rom supports a limited number of languages, and there is no option to download more languages. If you want to use swype with other languages, go to the swype website, sign up for a free account, and follow the instructions to install swype beta. Swype beta can coexist with the version of swype that came with the Rom, and allows the possibility of installing additional languages (including Arabic, Korean, Chinese, etc.).
If what you want is the stock ICS keyboard, search for "IceCream Sandwich-ICS Keyboard" in the Play Store.
Q7: Can I root?
Yes and no. To be more precise: a rooted stock Honeycomb Rom can be upgraded to ICS via MobileODIN while preserving root. Update: here is a method to root the ICS rom.
* * * * *
HONEYCOMB (Older version of the FAQ)
Q1: Surely this thing with its speedy processor should feel more responsive?
A: First and foremost, this thing is very speedy and responsive (see e.g., this discussion). Ok, ok, the general consensus is that Honeycomb (Android 3.0) and Samsung Touchwiz (the default launcher) are holding back the otherwise stellar hardware a little. The only solution for the first is to wait for the upcoming Ice Cream Sandwish (Android 4.0) update, slated to be released July 2012.
What can--and arguably should--be done in the meantime is to change the launcher. ADW Launcher Ex*, Go Launcher, LauncherPro, and SPB all options. Apart from being much faster, more responsible and less of a resource hog, they are also much more customizable compared to Touchwiz (search in Market for various themes and icon packs). Some worry that since Touchwiz is not removed (it can't be on stock unrooted rom), it might still be in the background. If you are afraid that it is taking up valuable processor cycles, remove all homescreen widgets on Touchwiz to make yourself feel better, like I did.
*Jade Eyed Wolf has put up a very useful video tutorial on how to use ADW here (the thread is here). To get rid of the top statusbar in ADW, see this.
Q2: Is there a way to make the system font size larger without rooting?
There is an app for that; though this is probably be a better way for the those who have rooted their device (omarrabbat).
Q3: I am unable to write to the external sd card (from within Android) using anything other than the stock file manager; is there something wrong with me?
A: No, you're fine. That's how it is out of the box. The solution requires rooting (see Q4 below) the device and changing the permissions for the sd card. See here. (You can of course write to the sd card with Windows explorer after connecting the Tab to the PC via the USB cable.) Another method for solving the problem is available here; note that you will also need the device to be rooted, and have CWM Recovery installed, beforehand (lowem).
Q4: How do I get root access?
One guide is here; another (with instructions to unroot) is here.
Q5: Why can't I seem to change the lockscreen wallpaper?
Settings>Screen>Screen display>Lock screen. At which point you should be in Gallery (or if, like me, you have an alternative pic viewer--e.g., QuickPic--installed, the dialogue box should ask you to "select wallpaper from"...). Select photo of choice, but make sure to crop with Gallery, and presto. See discussion here.
Q6: How do I get movies and tv shows onto the tab?
See this discussion.
Q7: How do I connect my tab to my PC using a USB cable? Wireless?
Make sure that the appropriate drivers are installed on the PC (e.g., download and install Samsung Kies. When plugged in, Windows should recognize the tab as an MTP device, which allows one to browse both the internal storage and the external sd card in Explorer. The option to convert files as you copy to the device is not a good idea (see this). Best to do any conversion you want on the PC. It's safe to disconnect by simply pulling out the USB cable.
For wireless file transfers (and much more), try Airdroid, which works, and is free.
Q8: What's a good pdf reader for this baby?
There are several good choices: EBookDroid, Repligo, EzPDF, Mantano, Aldiko...

Dear Samsung team member, can you please pressure the product team to release an upgrade to this device as the screen fonts are so small its very difficult to use.
I have read in a number of forums that customers are not happy with this problem and some believe that it will be fixed with the release of ICS for this device.
I bought the product with the intention of using it for work and its painfull to read. I really hope something can be done to fix this urgently.
Kind regards

I've used Bluetooth File Transfer app from the market on my SGS phone to send files to my paired GT-P6810. It works great. Remember though that BT is sloooow so use alternate, egWiFi, for large files.

I can't offer a solution but would be keen to see if anyone can. I have the same problem. My 7.7 3G just won't connect to Kies. I'm running Vista, but will soon have a new PC with Win 7, so will try again then.
No probs with my SG2

For Q3, found a slightly easier way via the "update.zip" method over at this thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458021
It's under Tab 7 Plus forum but I've tried it and it works for Tab 7.7 as well.

This is good. The original poster noted that the method "won't work for a device that doesn't have CWM Recovery installed." What about your own 7.7: was it rooted and did you have CWM Recovery installed when you use the update.zip?

What is the LOST.DIR folder?
Can the folder itself or the files within them be removed?
Is there a safe way to remove the tablet from the connection a computer via USB?

Not sure.
I've always just pulled my USB cable out. Doesn't seem to be any issue. I suppose it's more proper to effect it on the PC first.

Windows doesn't have an "eject" or "safely remove hardware" option for devices connected via MTP--at least, not one like it does for HDDs, flash drives, or other USB mass storage devices. As long as you're not using the connection it's fine to just unplug it.

[NST/NSTG] FW 1.2.2 update

I've been waiting around for more than a week for my second "new" NST to update. It finally did so yesterday. The update has been mentioned on the Mobileread forums and one XDA member has already asked about rooting it so I thought I'd see what I could learn. You apparently won't learn anything from B&N as they either respond as if this is something that should not happen (so beware!) or they say it provides minor enhancements. There is no notice of the update on their cobweb-ridden website for the NST, no opportunity to do a manual update. It takes about a week of WiFi on all the time to catch the rolling push.
Edit: B&N has since posted the update zip on their website. For users with non-US firmwares, I recommend flashing US 1.2.1 firmware (see https://sites.google.com/site/xcdguides/nook/nookB&N). You cannot register 1.2.1 but you can update it before registering. At the "welcome" screen connect the device to your PC and transfer the update zip from B&N. Let the device sleep and it will do the update. Then you can register if you desire.
Edit: The time for OTA updates is past and I'm not sure if devices still running 1.2.1 will act up in any way. Certainly you won't be able to contact B&N servers and this could lead to connection error messages when WiFi is turned on.
What's new?
I can't claim to have done a thorough shakedown but there is no obvious change in the device on FW 1.2.2. I suspect this is a security update to keep the devices in line with new security measures on B&N servers so that owners can still spend money at B&N via the devices But I was curious to see if the cacerts.bks file had been changed since some certificates have already failed (a few of which have been fixed already by @tshoulihane to keep the Kindle app working). No joy there--not that I was surprised. B&N doesn't need cacerts to ensure correct negotiation with their servers via their own apps. Everything seems exactly the same.
To update or not to update
If, like me, you rooted your device earlier with NookManager, the update will fail and your device will spontaneously reboot. This behavior (occurring every Sunday morning as I listened to NPR on the TuneIn app) is what lead me to the conclusion that it was the update process. If you don't give a hoot about the update but you're not keen on having your device reboot on a whim, here is a fix: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=34433959&postcount=3
Edit: well, that seemed to work at first, but then the weekly reboots began until I finally updated.
I don't know about other rooting methods potentially interfering with the update process.
If you just must have the update, it is likely you will need to restore your device to stock, re-register it, and leave WiFi on for a week or so until the update occurs (I left mine on the Library screen so I would know when a reboot--taking you to Home--occurred).
Edit: at this point, you will have to manually download the 1.2.2 update zip from B&N and manually install it on your device. This will require you to invoke a factory re-image as the update will not work on a rooted device. A NookManager card (even an old one) can be used to start the factory reset. Once that's done and you're at the "Welcome" screen, connect your device to your PC and drag the 1.2.2 update zip to the "Nook" drive. Let the device sleep. Come back in awhile and see if the update zip is still visible on the "Nook" drive. If it's gone, the update has been done. Now for rooting.....
Can I root it?
The short answer is "yes".
NookManager is versatile and wonderful, but it does have a bit of dust on it by now. I plan to look into that and start another thread. For now, there are two files which need to be edited in order to use it successfully with FW 1.2.2. You'll want Notepad++ or similar.
Prepare the NookManager card as described in its thread. Examine the prepared card in your PC. You'll see one partition:
NookManager
In that partition find the folder "scripts". You need to edit these two files:
install_nookmods
install_old_installer
In both files the change is the same. Near the top of the file you will find this line:
Code:
if [ "$SYSTEM" != "1.2.0" -a "$SYSTEM" != "1.2.1" ]; then
You want to change it to look like this:
Code:
if [ "$SYSTEM" != "1.2.0" -a "$SYSTEM" != "1.2.1" -a "$SYSTEM" != "1.2.2"]; then
Not sure how touchy spaces, etc., are, but try to follow what's already there. Save the files and you're good to go.
Now....there is an issue with a few apps like Opera Mobile and Tasker not wanting to install. They are the only two I have encountered so far. Here is the "fix": https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=76873102&postcount=5
Thanks!!
It works, Thanks! I just rooted my new NSTG with no issues.
:good:
Hi, I have followed all the steps, but when I restarted my Nook its directly booting into NOOK system instead of NookManager.
Can you please help me here, I don't see any logs to upload.
Thanks

If it's not booting off the card then one or more of the files on the card must be damaged. Rather than trying to figure it out, it would be easier to just make a new card (try formatting your old one and writing the image again). I wouldn't even make the changes needed for 1.2.2 until you establish whether the card boots. You don't have to use NookManager, just see if it will boot and then exit if it does. Then you can make the needed changes and try again. If it doesn't boot after you've done the minimal edits, then somehow the card has been mishandled. Be sure to eject the card safely from your PC.

Thanks, I have tried multiple times (Format and reload) but till it does not boot into sdcard. I will try once again from scratch in the weekend.
Great!
Its works perfectly, i rooted my nook simple one touch with update 1.2.2
I am in the UK and have a Nook Simple Touch Glow-light. It was on f/w version 1.2.1 and would not connect to the internet. I downloaded the nook_1_2_update.zip from the USA B&N site at copied it to the Nook using the USB connection from my PC. However it would not update to 1.2.2, the zip file just disappears.
I then used the excellent Nook Region Changer, and changed the Nook to USA region. I again wrote the nook_1_2_update.zip file to the Nook using the USB connection, and after the next wake up cycle on my nook it updated to 1.2.2 and allowed me to register on the USA B&N website and browse books, etc, but not do any social media things, and also I cannot buy books or download free ones as I do not have a USA home address, which is required.
I again used Nook Region Changer and put my nook back to UK version, but this process 'lost' the 1.2.2 update so I am back to square one.
Apparently the two firmware updates to move a USA NST/G to FW 1.2.2 (downloaded from USA B&N site) and the one to ove a UK NST/G to 1.2.2 (downloaded from the now defunct UK B&N website) are different and incompatible.
My questions is "Does anyone have a copy of the UK version of the nook_1_2_update.zip file please?"
I would like to thank you guys at XDA for your very comprehensive and detailed information about the NST/G, and the tools supplied.

There will never be another update other than the US one you have already tried. I think you may be expecting too much from the device at this point. A made-up USA address might be of some use, but I doubt it. Even with US firmware from the US I could never get the Google stuff to work and I just assume that B&N never cared much about updating URLs and APIs for the social media stuff and just wanted to be sure US customers could still purchase books. But that's my somewhat cynical take.
Anyway, you can always go back to US 1.2.2 and then delete ALL the B&N stuff and build your own reader if that suits you. See here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-touch/general/nst-g-removing-bn-apps-t3972941
Thanks for the quick reply, I will do as you suggest. The Nook is a reasonable little reader and the glowlight is a nice feature.
You are quite right, I think I am expecting a little too much from it.
All the best,
Alan

Faulty? What happens?
Did you remember to do a factory reset before trying the update? You cannot update a rooted device with that zip.

Well, yes. I should have asked that question also...
Where does one download the 1.2.2.zip file? It's not on B&N anywhere I can find.
Thank you.

They didn't make it easy.
Go here: https://help.barnesandnoble.com/app...212/~/having-trouble-connecting-to-your-nook?
Scroll down to a list of the various Nook models and click on Nook Simple Touch: 1.2.2
That will drop you down farther on the same page where you'll find manual installation instructions and below that, little pictures of the devices with the word "Download" under each.
Please, someone has the files? The links are down!!!
Thank you

I was having this exact problem but I couldn't use the Nook Region Changer because step #4 is to reset the device which I couldn't do because it couldn't connect to the internet (RAGE!!!). I have spent days trying to sort this out it's absolutely ridiculous.
I have finally found this page: https://heeed.net/resetting-a-nook-simple-touch/ which has helped me to reset it to factory settings and get it working to a basic level again without being registered.
I'm furious really that B&N won't give us a working update so we can at least use Wifi on our devices, WTF?! Disgusting customer service! Anyway, hope that link helps someone else!

Well, I also have learned a bit since my original post. See here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/nst-g-dealing-with-non-us-aka-uk-devices-in-2021.4233411/
I think there are options there which may give you a better result.
