The position of the microphone on the Galaxy Note can be positioned very close to your mouth when speaking so that there is no need to shout and your conversation can be kept private, just like the good old days. Because the microphone is not close enough to the mouth on small phones people tend to shout which can deafen the unfortunate and unwilling listeners nearby. I much prefer to keep my conversations private and I don't want to listen to other peoples babblings.

I'm soooo on the fringe of buying this from Amazon but the ONE thing keeping me is the fact of taking phone calls in private. First off I HATE bluetooth headsets. I only want to carry my device. Nothing else... With that said are the speakers on the Advantage located so as I can put my ear up to it and cancel out the sound so others can't hear what other people are saying? Or are there dual speakers on the side which would make it quite hard?
Does anyone out there with an Advantage use it like this to take/place calls? Man I'm about to pull the trigger I just can't stand it doesn't have an earpiece...
Is there a super flat bluetooth headset I could possibly attach to the back?
I honestly don't talk that much on my phones mostly data and stuff but when I do need to talk I'd rather not have everyone else hear it...
Thanks.

No respectable Athena owners would put this phone up to their face. I use the LG Stlye-I as do others. I agree with you that the BT Earpiece is way over done and in some instances rude to wear.
Having the Style-I for the Athena gets loads of attention as most folks believe that it is your phone (and it's quite the piece). It is smaller than an average hi-lighter pen, has great battery life and a nice caller ID display. Only downside is that it rings quietly and does not have a vibrate mode.
Check e-bay as they run $30 or so depending on the listing.
I'm one of those who are not respectable, and I can't care less if I look like a nut to others. I do turn my volume to the lowest though, but that won't silent it enough. For calls which are important,I do pluck in my wired headset which I use for mp3 anyway. For VOIP I always use wired headset to prevent echo to the other party.
My advice is for you to buy other type of PDA instead of Athena if you are very strongly against using headset (need not be bt, wired will do very well) and feel bothered holding it against your face .
Regards.
I have a bluetooth headset and the wired microphone but I often just use my Ameo straight up to my face. It works ok but does look silly and you have to mess around with the volume. Not good in a quiet office environment because others will hear.
Summary: Possible but NOT ideal!
When going grocery shopping it's a bit ackward to put the phone to my ear and maneuver with 5 plus bags at the same time. I like to keep my hands free, and IMHO the Athena Is just a big too big to keep it to my ear, not only that the volume just isn't low enough to make the conversation private. As eaglesteve stated your best bet would be to get a different wm device. The phone is truely not a 1 handed device, however do keep in mind it has one of the biggest screens available on mobile devices. Just my 2 cents.
Oh and btw there's a seller on ebay stating he has 10 units available at $450 USD and the sale is ending in about 2 hrs. Hope this helps, here's the link:

thanks for the feedback guys
I have many winmo phones but the screen on the Advantage really appeals to me.
the universal has an earpiece I just wish this did...

Like others have said, holding the phone up to your ear does work, but people close can hear your whole conversation.
I use the LG-StyleI and it works great. Leave your advantage on your belt (buy a tuff-as-nuts case) and answer and call using the style-i. You right the screen is great. I also have many winmo phones and the screen on the advantage can't be beat.
I am an occasional phone user. Nobody wants to talk to me ;-) But the sheer joy of owning one of these beasts far outweighs any inconvenience when using the phone (for an occasional user). The screen is large enough to make all the hype about watching videos, reading books, using spreadsheets, viewing website pages, playing hi res games, etc practical and enjoyable. BUY IT!
Athena up to my ear for tellyphone conversation
To juiceppc ,
i own an athena since January 2007 and have been frequently making & receiving calls by putting either my left ear or my right ear near to the right speaker like the Nokia Engage handphone and my mouth not so near to the mic on the left bottom of my athena with both speakers volume and mic volume to the maximum , and in my country - Malaysia i can talk using this way with 100% clarity in a quite enviroment or about 60% to 70% clarity on outdoors but 40% to 50% clarity on jobsites / noisy enviroment. Sometimes i encounter some breakups and cracking calls but other than that i think it's okay for my usage. You can always adjust both volumes to suit your calls but you may need some practise to get the hang of it. I hope this helps & sorry for very late posting
Do you use the earphones that comes with the phone. Well, one thing is that if you use it in public, you are very disturbing to your surroundings, but another thing is that earphones are very bad for your ears, especially in relation to music. Far more younger people than ever before, have problems with their ears early on, because of overuse of in ear earphones.
My best advice is to use headphones instead, where the quality is also far better.
Not trying to sound bad or anything, but i've been using earphones since portable tape recorders and disc players came out. Also, not sure what you mean by "very disturbing to your surroundings".
Being a musician myself, i use them on recordings, reversals and even during live events. They are quite useful at blocking outer noises and allow you to focus on what you want to hear, whether that is music or a specific instrument in my case.
Smoking, drinking and quite many things are "very bad" for us. Earphones are not on that list. Taking things in extremes will eventually be bad. Headphones can cause you damage in loud volumes too. When someone goes to a club and they have a 130db sub-woofer screaming in their face, it's just as bad.
what????????
The issue is not with earphones or headphones. The damage caused to one's hearing is due to the volume the sound comes out at. It doesn't matter what you have on or in your ears. You are quite right to warn that acoustic shock can damage your hearing irreparably though.
Equally, headphones can be just as polluting to those around you as poor earphones if you don't buy the right ones. I use decent (admittedly rather expensive) Sennheiser in-ear phones that don't leak a single decibel of sound to the outside world.
This is just a personal thing, but I always think people walking around with huge buckets stuck on their ears look rather daft. I much prefer in-ear phones.
It's true....
Headphones give you cancer....

Damn i was talking about patenting this like 2 weeks ago. Use the stylus as a handset. Charge when inserted into phone for storage. Microphone in tip, speaker in top. Geeze. O well
The only thing is, web sites have moaned about the G-Note looking funny when people hold them up to their head to make phone calls. Just wait until people start talking into what looks like an ink pen. People will freak out at first but I can at least imagine it becoming trendy. Perhaps you could just park it on top of your ear like everyone has seen someone doing with a pencil. School kids would love the stealthy phone. Teachers wouldn't even notice until the word got around. Other kids might start hanging real ink pens on their ears to make it look like they had a cool phone too. I can imagine lots of funny scenarios if this thing actually comes to market. I hope it does.
So... I found this out by mistake.
Check out the video.
You will have to turn up the sound in the video since its just a humming sound. Sounds like capacitors charging.

I'm pretty sure that the note is not supposed to make that sound.
Wow pretty scary especially when you're in a loud place

The thing is is really not supposed to make any noise. From close it sounds like a microwave
It's the speaker making noise. I can confirm mine does the same thing

doesn't sound like the speaker.
Don't hold it to close to your face. If it's a short or a battery problem you don't wanna be close to it if it blows or catches on fire
Sounds like it to me. Coming from the speaker on my unit.

I'm going to see if it sounds louder or does anything starting this and charging the phone.
Wish me luck...:fingers-crossed:
I guess none of you have used Smart Switch before? It's something I used on the daily working at T-Mobile to transfer data on customers' phones. The noise you're hearing IS coming from the speaker, it's an ultra-sonic noise emitted that the receiving phone that would be running Smart Switch, would pick up with its microphone and use it as a means of pairing. Think of it like the new Google Nearby API... If you ever play with a Nexus running Nougat, you'll have a similar experience transferring accounts and app install lists. It used to be an NFC pairing, now using the Nearby API it scans wifi, Bluetooth, and ultra-sonic pairing noises are probably also possible using it.

Welcome to Samsung's newest speaker in the Note 7 lol. It may not have much oomph, but clarity and loudness are high on the list.

Yeah... still my phone gets hot and i still have a perfectly working note 5. I think I might just go back to that. Started SmartSwitch on that and can a very fain noise, not even comparable with the note 7.
TL;DR: It's fine, no one has a malfunctioning speaker in their Note 5 or Note 7.
Grab another device or 2, non-Samsung, and try Smart Switch to hear how each device's speaker is audibly different. Don't worry. It's by design for both phones. It's the limitations of the N5 speaker that prevent such a wide dynamic range to be reproduced. The speaker on the 7 has to also be water resistant. You ever hear any phone inside a Lifeproof case? The biggest complaint I hear is that it muffles the sound. Samsung didn't want that compromise the speaker experience when they went for their resistance rating. Just wanted to try and tamper down the hatred on an otherwise beautiful (if pricey) device. The battery fiasco sucks for them right now. No need to go all TMZ and try and put salt in their wounds by causing mass hysteria. Even the few other replies in this post could be quickly read and someone flies off the handle and goes to the nearest store.

For those who DO care about the retail aspect of this recall, this is going to be a VERY rough time for T-Mobile Reps, they're put under a TON of pressure to hit sales goals, and if they spend too much time doing customer service, their numbers suffer and they lose their jobs. Trust me, I know, I worked just shy of 2 years at a corporate kiosk in a mall that's probably going to be closed before the holidays. It was already a losing battle trying to hit goals, doing exceptional customer service to promote "Brand Loyalty" in yourself as a sales rep was a recipe for not even hitting 50% during the month of December.

If it explodes, you're holding it wrong..
Wrong advice, here's a list of what should happen.
1) Find a lucky coin.
2) Change your name to Harvey Dent
3) Hold Note 7 close to your face until it explodes
4) Fight Batman

Hi, swinging between a Pixel 6 and the Nothing. Not to bothered as will be in a position to upgrade next year.
One of the things that might come to weigh in the balance is Desktop Mode. The Pixel doesn't have it.
Does the Nothing Phone have Desktop Mode? I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere?
No.
There actually only some brand purpose this feature (Samsung Dex) and there not a lot of people waiting/using this feature.

Thanks. Yes, Samsung and Huawei those smartphone noobs... Shame, this is one person that does use it.
People find different things useful. I can't understand why some people are so hung up on smartphone speakers for example. To me it is obvious they are always going to be sh1t compared to real speakers. If you care about audio get speakers, real ones. Not ones that are less than 1cm in size. If you want them because you like to walk down the street taking loudly at your phone held at 90 degrees to your face and have everybody around you hear the whole conversation then you deserve the worst speakers around because you are an idiot. But that's just me.
