No root for the OTA yet, but downloading to 2.2.1 and rooting that will net you the same result as rooting the update. Are you just worried about downgrading? I think i have seen you ask this before.
I just got a device with the ota. I just don't know how to do it there's no guides.

I also can confirm that the downgrade works. Just make sure you download the usb drivers for the MT4G and read about ADB it's very easy if you follow the instructions.
I was concerned about bricking my phone also but it does work.
Good Luck.
Is it possible to flash Clockwork Mod Recovery after applying the 2.3.4 update?
Yes if you have s-off

How about for us people with s-off and stock 2.3.4? Are we stuck on this ROM until someone gets root?

I believe that they are working on a way to break 2.3.4 still. I haven't noticed any post confirming a successful root of the OTA update.
There has been some talk about gingerbreak doing something but it was experimental and I didn't do a whole lot of digging so I wouldn't recommend even trying.

Does anyone know if there's an updated guide to downgrading? I think the links (like to download the JAVA JDK) needs to be updated. I've spent hours reading and trying to find exactly what I need to download. I've tried installing 3 different JDK and none of them will let me install the Android SDK.
Edit: I found a fix to my problem. The Android SDK wasn't detecting JDK, all I had to do was click back then next, WTF...

I used gfree AFTER I HAD DOWNGRADED 2.3.4 to 2.2.1. It took forever, but it gave me TRUE S-OFF and PERMAROOT! It looks complicated, but its not that complicated. The gfree part is easy, just for downgrading, ADB setup was difficult was for me at first. PM me with questions or hit thanks button ^.^

You must downgrade to 2.2.1 before attaining S-Off.
No one here recommends HTC Dev.

I incorrectly assumed you had S-On.
Do you have a custom recovery? If so, there is a rooted 2.3.4 in the dev section you can flash.

You bet. As long as it's for the myTouch 4G.
On our phone, S-Off is the most important thing. Flash away. Just make sure you wipe data, cache, dalvik and system at minimum. I would recommend you look into 4EXT recovery if you don't have it.
