I've been getting the SD card was unexpectedly removed error for my 8GB card. Can repeat this issue by moving pocket god (or several smaller apps) to the SD card. I can how ever copy 8GB worth of data from a PC onto it, so is this issue with android/my phone or is the SD card just acting weird like this? A 2GB I got with it works just fine, just it isn't large enough to suit my needs.
Things I've tried - erasing card within android, formating to fat32 within windows as well as defragging, and threatening it with magnets.
Phone is HTC Legend running "Gingerbread + CyanogenMod". Download the ROM from derhofbauer.at/android/
Later;
Now when I copy it through the phone usb it now dismounts, but I can copy it fine through an adapter I'm using. Seems this is phone related. Will try using my default firmware tomorrow when I get time. Any suggestions here are welcome and encouraged... Really like the way this ROM looks as well as functions
It may well be the ROM, I saw some stuff on gerrit about fixing it. Check with BlaY0's ROM (or similar) or CM 6.1, see what happens
Is there a way I could go about backing up my exact settings, contacts, apps etc. into my own custom rom so if it isn't the ROM I use I could quickly go back? Still a complete idiot with android so haven't figured out theming yet and like my current ROMs look
edit;
If it was my ROM wouldn't my 2 GB one be acting up as well? Cause it's working perfectly fine, I plan on trying to return the SD card tomorrow but got a feeling they won't accept it back...

It might not, 2GB card is most probably SD aka SD 1.x, 8GB is SDHC aka SD 2.0...It might be related...
To backup your settings and ROM I would recommend backing it all up with nandroid (CWM, FakeFlash) or if you want to, you can ue some apps like Titanium Backup, My backup etc...but backing-up/restoring settings/home screens might not work across ROMs, especially going from Stock-like to CM...Contact are saved via your Google account any synchronized afterwards anyway, so don't worry there ;-)
Well, i'm a noob to this forum, and to doing ANY rooting/flashing. There, thats out in the open XD
Heres the specs:
CM7 7.0.3 Stable
Nook Color (Blue Dot)
ADW Launcher
Onto the issue! I have searched ENDLESSLY for a solution to this, but have come up short. Nearly everytime I power off/on or reboot the Nook, all my widgets show "Problem Loading Widget". The ONLY way to get them running again is deleting and replacing them again on the screen.
Let me explain some things I have done and hopefully we can figure this out. I am assuming, that it may be due to me performing this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1034939. Basically what that does is take the unused eMMC from the NC and tag it as the SDCard. The reason for doing that is because I don't have any ACTUAL decent sized SD cards and figured why not use the 5GB thats avail and unused on the Nook, and "simulate" it as being a 5GB SD card for apps and whatever else.
Nearly every post I have read says it has to do with having the apps for the widgets on the SD Card. Well, they're not, they're on internal memory. AND, if I do move them to my "simulated" SD Card, they don't even come up in the widget list, so that clears that option.
Also, since I had a Blue Dot Nook, I performed this - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1094371 and partitioned to the old style NC.
I have tried and tried to find out where the apps, if stored "internally", actually are. I cannot for the life of me find them, other than the default Google Apps in /system/app, as well as the ones I have downloaded on the "simulated" SD card under /mnt/asec & /mnt/sdcard/android.secure.
Also, when I plug the NC into my PC, I see whatever is on my "simulated" 5GB SD card (which is really the eMMC of the device). Is it possible to view the root of the device at all to see ALL the files/folders on it?
If someone can solve this, I will be eternally grateful, in a totally non gay way atleast. THANKS!
Hey there....
I'm new to the NookColor and rooting/flashing Android devices, too (though, I did run Linux on my Palm Tungsten T3, back in the day). I probably only partially understand your woes, but it seems to me that your problem stems from the faking microSD thing. Maybe it's not so much that Android wants to put something in the SD, as much as it's confused, when it probes for orthodoxy. I understand the want to use the internal memory, instead of buying a mSD, honestly.
Again, I'm totally new to this, but reading your post and many other posts in the last 48 hours, I think I might have a valid solution: start over. If I were you, I'd do the following, which, incidentally, is very much what I'm in the process of doing, too. I'm starting from "blue dot" scratch with two mSD's (2GB & 8GB) in-hand, though. By the way, and if it's any help to you, I bought my Class 4 SanDisk 8GB mSD at Office Depot yesterday for around $15 (on sale?).
1. Buy a microSD card.
2. Image the card with ClockworkMod.
3. Install TitaniumBackup Free.
4. Backup all of your apps/stuff to the microSD card with TitaniumBackup.
5. Save an image of your current setup with ClockworkMod (booting from mSD, backing up to mSD)
6. Repartition to the old (pre-"blue-dot") scheme, again, using the first mrm3.net link below as a guide.
7. Install the latest CM7 Nightly for "encore"...
8. Save an image of your current setup with ClockworkMod (booting from mSD, backing up to mSD)
9. Install TitaniumBackup Free.
10. Restore all of your apps to the microSD card with TitaniumBackup.
(Of course, I'm assuming a lot of things... I guess I'm just thinking aloud... Maybe some of this is of some use to you. Good luck!)

p.s.... I had a few links I was going to share, but I'm not allowed to share external links until after my 8th post (and I understand why that's a rule)... lol..
There seems to be plenty of threads about these things around here. I just don't have them right now..
Thank you vulariter! It'd be great if when you finish getting everything set up, letting me know how it works out for you. I know people have been having some pretty weird things happening with the blue dot Nooks. Appreciate the info.
I"m happy to report that my internal CM7 Nightly install went well. I chose to go with a 2 GB apps / 4 GB media internal partitioning scheme. I like breathing room, on both sides..lol.. I also like doing things the difficult way, sometimes.. (just being honest)...
Minus the unnecessary convolution of my rooting the stock OS, 50+ complex character WPA2 key, static IP WIFI network, and email address fiasco, here's basically what I did. Again, I'd love to share the external links, but I don't think it will let me do so.
Oh, and always check MD5 sums on the files you download, wherever possible. Corruption in these files will surely eat your Nook alive, at least a little. lol.. Yes, be very scared of that.
Also, don't forget to backup your ClockworkMod backups to a better medium than the microSD card. I used 7zip to archive them on my laptop's internal drive. A cloud backup of them would probably be better (e.g. Dropbox). Just remember, you're putting potentially personal info out there, wherever you put these backups.
Thanks to all the people who figured this stuff out (see the links / websites below, to give them credit).
Bought a NookColor at my local B&N. (I later read about the "blue dot" thing and realized mine had the "blue dot" on the back of the box.)
SIDE NOTE: My understanding is that the "blue dot" signifies only a few important things. 1. a 5 GB apps / 1 GB media partitioning scheme... 2. U-Boot 1.2, with the "Read Forever" logo..... 3. Maybe an unlocking of a few more cylinders (about 250 MB)??? I've only read a little on this..... 4. Maybe a different chip revision or two, inside.
Bought a SanDisk Class 4 (class 6 would have been better) 8GB microSD card.
Located my microSD to SD adapter, which is a priceless item to me.
Located my USB many-in-one card reader, because my Lenovo R61's internal SD reader is unstable.
Located my 2GB class ? microSD card, which I once used in my old LG env2.
Connected my USB card reader to my laptop.
Inserted the 2GB mSD into my USB card reader.
Copied all of my old music, etc, on my 2GB microSD to a directory on my laptop for posterity.
Downloaded the latest version of Win32DiskImager. (Link 1)
Downloaded the latest version of ClockworkMod 2GB SD image. (Link 1)
Imaged my 2GB mSD with the ClockworkMod image.
Created "clockworkmod" and "clockworkmod\backup" directories, inside of the 2 GB mSD (whose disk label is now "boot").
Downloaded the "Custom: 2GB for Apps and 4GB for Media" partitioning file from mrm3.net and placed it in the root directory of my 2 GB mSD.
Downloaded the "Mandatory Data Format File" from mrm3.net and placed it in the root directory of my 2 GB mSD.
Downloaded the latest CM7 "encore" Nightly from cyanogenmod.com and placed it in the root directory of my 2 GB mSD.
Downloaded the latest "encore" Gapps from mrm3.net and placed it in the root directory of my 2 GB mSD.
Confirmed my Gmail and Youtube accounts were linked. This is also the same address which I'm using for my B&N account.
SIDE NOTE: I had to change my B&N account's non-Gmail email address to align my email addresses. I think this may have caused a problem with my obtained-at-Nook-purchase B&N Membership Card, because it no longer works... (I've contacted them about it...and their answer is unsatisfactory. Beware!)
Unboxed my NookColor and began charging it, via the wall plug.
Booted my stock NookColor, signed into my WIFI network and registered my device to my Gmail email address.
Played around with the stock OS and Nook apps, because I'll probably never ever see them again.. The Crossword game was awesome! I didn't allow myself to become attached to their reading apps, to be honest..lol.. (I would have probably been attached, had I not been proactive in my "hacking".)
Powered off my NookColor.
Inserted the 2 GB mSD into my NookColor.
Booted my NookColor into ClockworkMod.
Saved a backup of the stock system to the "backup" directory I created earlier.
Followed the instructions at mrm3.net to repartition my NookColor (rebooting, as directed).
Removed the 2 GB mSD card.
Rebooted again, allowing the Nook to recover from the repartitioning. I did not reregister the device in this step. I just waited for the woman's face to appear and shut it down.
Inserted the 2 GB mSD card.
Booted my NookColor into ClockworkMod.
Saved a backup of the NEWLY PARTITIONED stock system to the "backup" directory I created earlier.
I followed the mrm3.net CM7 Nook Nightlies instructions, but I'll paraphrase here. (Definitely seek this article out, and don't take my word for it.)
Still in ClockworkMod, I reformatted the "data", "system",and "cache"partitions.
Used "install from zip" to install "cm_encore_full-xx.zip"
Used "install from zip" to install "Nook_Color_Google_Apps.zip"
This may be a good time to obtain another backup, if you're paranoid. I did not and wasn't...
Removed the 2 GB mSD card.
Rebooted again, allowing CM7 to do its thing.
Signed into my WIFI network, using the menus.
Signed into the Google Market, selecting all of the Gapps, when prompted. (I figure I can uninstall them, if I find them totally useless.) (e.g. Facebook
app, since I quit it..lol)
Inserted my 8 GB mSD card in the NookColor for the first time and formatted it, from within CM7. I could have made a Win32DiskImage image of the 2 GB ClockworkMod mSD, wiped it out and formatted it for general use, but I like having my own data (media files / apps) separate from my "live recovery environment(s)." Point being, I could have gotten by with just a single mSD card, as tiny as 2 GB and the cheapest class, but I splurged, because I want to keep some music and things on tap, wherever I go.
Rejoiced in the open source goodness.
This would another good time to obtain another backup. I should go do that right now..
Please keep in mind that I might be taking some things for granted. My mind has been altered by being a *NIX System Administrator...
Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.

Great stuff V! So this is what I have decided to do. I will keep my current system until the next stable version of CM is released. Once that happens, i'll go ahead and repartition, reformat, and of course reinstall following all of the proper procedures that i'm too lazy to write out here.
The only other issue I was having with my Nook is that it wasnt recognizing when an SD card was plugged in. I thought it may have been CM7, so I flashed back to the stock OS, and it still wouldnt recognize it plugged in. However, if I have the SD card plugged in, and reboot, it shows the SD card mounted fine. I need to do a check to make sure I can read/write to it, but i'm assuming it will be no problem if it sees it fine. If I were to remove the card, it would not say that the card is unplugged, so theres no instant feedback; it requires a reboot every time to notice if the card is plugged in or not. For me, all I need is it to be recognized and be accessible, as its not like I am going to be taking it out all the time, it will be in there pretty much for good.
After playing around on my recently rooted NC running Cyanogen7 I decided that I would much rather dual boot it. None of the ereaders I downloaded work a well as the BN reader that is built in. Actually just as I typed that last sentence I tried Alkido and I love it as an e-reader. Still, I would like to unroot my NC and dual boot it so I can have the option of regular BN device whenever I want. I was just wondering if someone knew of a good guide to dual booting, as I'm not sure about some of the ones I found.
Also, just so I'm understanding this correctly, if I dual boot it, I can run Cyanogen7 or the Stock 1.2 whenever I want by taking out the sd card or placing it in and restarting it? And I will still have Cyanogen7 running perfectly when I want? Thanks so much. I'm new to a lot of this hacking stuff, obviously.
This is certainly possible, though would have been far easier for you had you done it initially, either way it shouldn't be too hard.
you need to do a titanium backup of all your apps and data, then google the guide to cm7 on sd card (also consider picking up a class 2 or 4 sandisk microsd as it performs many orders of magnitude better than other cards at running an os.) Once you have that set up, restore your apps to the sd card rom, your can then grab a restore zip of the barnes and noble rom, do a wipe in clockwork recovery and flash the zip.
That should get you where you want.
I would have provided links at each point but its more hassle than its worth trying to search while on the nook. You should be able to find the appropriate guides through google without much trouble. Try "restore nook color" and "nook color cm7 sd boot"
UPDATE well it looks as though I have found a solution to my woes. I made several attempts of formatting the 2gb card in my laptop to no avail. I tried my old captivate that it originally came out of and the cappy had troubles reading it. I then stuck it in my evo and it registered instant, so I did asdcard format on my evo and then finally the tablet registers the card. In case this helps anyone else
First off someone please enlighten me on the tabs use and the way it mounts the external SD, I read somewhere that it only uses it for media files such as music books and pics. I have an 8GB that belongs in my EVO, and a 2gb that I had for my captivate I was hoping to use in my Tab for now.
Here's my story, maybe someone can shed a little light here: My tab was purchased with Stock 3.1, I was getting annoyed by the constant update request so I went ahead and rooted and installed CWM without incident, then I decided to install the Stock rooted update from here, however when I insert my SD cards they say they are unavailable. So I stick my 2gb in my laptop format to fat32 (should this be different?, typically it works in every other device I own) It still won't read, I did exactly as others point out in other threads but still I am stumped as to how the card is made available to the OS ? Now in a fit of frustration I pulled my 8gb out of my evo put the 2gb in and wham there it is, I put the 3.2 download on the 8gb popped it in tab entered CWM and flashed the update, I don't know if the 2gb is mountable in CWM I will try tonight but the 8gb was mountable through CWM however my 8gb also was not available to Android even after the update.
So what the heck is the use of the external SD and how is it used?
I think you might have an issue with your ROM,
I use my external SD for my titanium backups and other files I want to keep portable. I have used the SD card through my PC via USB and directly by putting into the PC's card reader.
Have you tried using a file manager? I use File Manager HD and the external card shows up as Storage on the left bar.
As for the filesystem, I think I may have originally formatted as FAT but I have also pulled my SD out of my Blackberry and used it to install Honeylicious through CWM,
All in all I dont think you should be having the issues that you are having...
Good luck
If it won't mount in CWM you need to format it in your android phone, that fixed it for me. Once it is formatted correctly you'll see a notification that an SD card is installed. Also my PC wouldn't see it until I put a custom rom on. Also to store items on it you can use a file manager to move things to and from it.

The 8gb card did mount in CWM but would not mount in the OS, or when it would I would get it was unavailable or sometimes even empy when I know there is only about 1 gb free space, I did not test the 2gb in CWM mainly because it was late and I needed to go to bed, but I will try tonight. The 8gb is the one I updated to rooted 3.2 with, I still need to go to 3.2.1 ? Is there a rooted Stock 3.2.1 floating around I really havent looked much into it yet
I have noticed that getting the iconia to read some sd cards is like tossing dice..Most people who have this issue says one card works perfect in every device but not in the iconia.. Some say the card will work sometimes and not others .. Some say the card works in cwm and not with file manager..
The issue here i think is that you have two CARDS THAT ARE FUSSY ABOUT mating with the iconia. OR Your rom .i would read the threads in the rom you are using.. IF still nothing that sounds like your issue ask the DEV about this.. If STILL No luck you can either try to buy a new diffrent card or flash a new rom to try and Diag. this issue..
Good luck..
Silly question
Is your microSD formatted FAT32?
If it is anything else, your unit may have trouble reading it depending on what ROM you are using - Not all ROM's are capable of reading NTFS or other file systems.
Sometimes, microSD's freak out as well, and the only way to get it back to normal is to format it in a Symbian phone (Nokia)
Also, make sure you are using the correct mount point for the card - /mnt/external_sd - Root Explorer and other apps like it can get there.
Other than that, you may just have a bad microSD, I have had many of them die for seemingly no reason.
I have a Nook Color. Somehow (and I really can't recall how), I can no longer get to the B&N side of my Nook. Even with the micro-SD out, I still go directly into CYANOGEN. To make matters worse, every single app I try to get from the market will not download. Once I 'Accept & download', the app starts to download then I get an Error overlay screen: "name-of-software" could not be downloaded due to an error.
So I have a V--E--R--Y generic tablet that can't do much. Please help.
Thanx in advance...................................
How did you go about installing CM7? Did you install it to the internal storage?
Please help!!! Noobie messed up NC (big time)
That's part of the problem. I did not consciously install to internal memory, I wanted it to boot from the SD card.
That's what I did...
That's what I did once. I unwittingly installed it onto the internal memory. It also happened to be really buggy. I restored it to stock using Clockworkmod Recovery. Did you use the installer for the SD card?
On a 16GB microSD, I used Win32DiskImager to write 1gb_clockwork-3.2.0.1-eyeballer to a newly-formatted SD card.
I put the ZIP file for: gapps-gb-20110828-signedgapps-gb-20110828-signed, and gapps-gb-20110828-newtalk-signed.
I tried the home-power key combo. It asks me if I'm sure that I want to restore to the factory. I say "Yes" but when the Nook starts up, I'm still in cyanogen mod.
Should I (re-)format the MicroSD, write 1gb_clockwork-3.2.0.1-eyeballer (or another version) then move recovery-clockwork-3.2.0.1-encore?
Aside from not being able to get back to B&N-supplied software, I can't do anything with the NC as an Android tablet.
OP, do you intend to install CM7 into the internal memory?
All I'm trying to accomplish is to get back to the factory NC settings. Once I can get there, I'll decide.
How to hard reset and Factory Default Nook Color - http://goo.gl/pSFui
Power down your NC. Wait approximately 10 seconds or so-- just give it a bit of a break between shut down and factory reset.
Press and hold power button and your "N" home button almost simultaneously-- press Power first and then the N.
Hold these until your screen flashes the "Touch the future of reading" message; hold for a second or two afterward, then release. You will then get a prompt asking if you want to reset your nook to factory. Press the home button to continue. It will ask you to confirm. Press the home key again. Your nook will deregister, reset, and when it reboots, you will see "Kate" in her tutorial video, as if you'd never registered it in the first place.
(Obviously your account info will still be valid-- simply register with your email/pw combo instead of creating a new account.)
Hope this helps- if so please click thanks
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I did this (more than once - grrrrrrrrrrrrr!). I never see the "touch the future....." message. Instead, I get a cyanogen mod 7 screen with the message "Booting into Recovery". Then I get a sickly yellow-greenish screen that asks (twice) if I want to teset. I confirm both times then it "wipes" the data. It then boots into a cyanogen mod 7 screen (and the skateboarding 'droid) and I go through the registration process.
Now, when I select a Google app, the downloading (Google Maps) seems to be taking forever, but at least I'm not getting the error I got before.
Also, I do not see the progress of the download that I'm used to seeing on my phone. All I see is "movement" under the "Downloading..." message. How long do I leave it before I abort the download?
Your micro sd card is removed right?

Eyeballer is a clockwork recovery bootable SD image which is used to install stuff (e.g. CM7) to internal memory.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227
VeryGreen (size agnostic thread) is the SD image which creates a full OS on the SD card itself leaving the internal memory alone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
You have used the Eyeballer method and have therefore done an internal install. You must also have installed a CM7 zip not just the gapps zip as they are just google apps and not an actual ROM.
You have 2 ways forward.
The simplest is if you want to end up with internal CM7 and are not interested in running the B & N ROM. Start again by creating the Eyeballer SD card using win32diskImager. Make sure you use a real USB SD adapter and not a card slot on a laptop. Put onto the card the CM7 ROM zip. I recommend the one from the KANG MiRaGe thread in the development forum. It is the most up to date and stable version available at the moment. Also put on one gapps zip (20110828). Now put the card in Nook, Power up and when in recovery then use the menus to format system, data and cache. Do NOT format boot. Then flash the CM7 ROM zip, then the gapps zip. Power down and prepare a clean SD card either by reformatting the eyeballer card with something like the HP USB card utility or a partition manager in the PC like miniTools. You could also use a different SD card if you want to keep the eyeballer one for future use. Put the card back in, power up and you should now be in a stable CM7 environment where you can set up wifi, register with the Google market and download apps.
The second way if you really want to return to stock on the internal and run CM7 of the SD card then use the eyeballer method but instead of flashing CM7 and gapps you now use a return to stock zip. Make sure you still format the partitions as before.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=914690
Once you have it back to stock and upgraded to whatever stock you want then follow the VeryGreen method from the link above. Once the SD card has put CM7 on itself, do not worry that there is only a 114MB space if you ever put the card back in the PC. That is normal; it is just the boot partition that the PC sees. The rest of the card can be seen if you USB connect the Nook to the PC.
Yes it is. Also, even though I'm not getting an error, no apps are loading.
You absolutely rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm back at the NC "baseline". I tried to go back to a 1.2 (which is what it came with) using "update-nc-stock-1.2-signed". Once I re-booted, it kept returning to the NOOK COLOR screen. Then I used a 1.0.1 from your last post. It came back fine with 2 exceptions. 1) I now have a message that I need to install a SD card. When I do, my (Windows Explorer) "Computer" screen only recognizes the SD card and not the Nook. These are piddly little issues, but if I can get them fixed, great! (Right now, I cannot upgrade the NC or move any books or load any apps.
Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had this same problem. Since I am a new member, and can't post links, I'm going to try to help.
Install Clockwork Recovery to an SD card. Yes, the same way you did when installing clockwork to the SD the first time.
There are some threads on other fourms (google is your friend) that have links to Update files that allow you to update while keeping clockwork recovery, and some that will remove clockwork recovery. If you can remove the SD card and boot into the Stock Nook OS, then don't worry about installing 1.0.0 or 1.0.1 like some of the forms say. Just place the .ZIP file of the hacked update (usually 1.3 or 1.4 I think) into the root folder of the SD card, then Install it on your NC just like installing CM7 onto the internal memory. Your nook should start working again. It restored mine to full functionality. I can now pay 3 Dollars for angry birds, but at least its not as terribly slow and laggy as it was with CM7.

I had the same issue last weekend, somehow my internal memory had become unrecognizable to anything, and the local Barnes and Noble store had a SD card that repartitioned the internal memory, and I was back in business. And as an added bonus I now have the 4 GB app/BN partition and the 1 GB mostly useless partition.

The instructions I see when googling around where I see that image mentioned are instructions for installing onto the Nook Color internal memory.
In the simplest case, making an n2a card is much less complicated than that ~ all you need is on the PC, write the size agnostic image, then drop in the CM7 build you want to use, then put the card in the Nook and it creates itself. There are upsides and downsides to different n2a methods, but that one seems to be the easiest ~ I've done it successfully several times, and I'm certainly nothing like an expert when it comes to these Android systems.
A recovery card image will make a bootable recovery card ... and while that might not have been what you needed to get what you want, its what you need to get the nook back to stock.
You might want to go to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22809801&postcount=148
... to get a version of the 1.4.1 upgrade that your recovery card can install. You'll probably have to wipe all sorts of partitions, which means you'll have to sign in with the B&N store again and you'll get to download you B&N apps again, but that's pretty straightforward.

... says that it will be necessary to format ("wipe") the /data and /system partitions, but it doesn't seem like you'll lose anything you want to keep. After all, you've either overwritten or completely tangled up your stock B&N info.
That post above has 1.4.1. There should be a signed 1.4.2 lying around somewhere, but if not, once its back to stock, you can update to 1.4.2 the normal way, download the B&N update file, drop it in the root of the Nook, make sure its at least 30% charged, and let it go to sleep, which will run the update file.
