Hello guys. I'd like to cook a pre-rooted stock rom for A501, starting from OTA Full Packages, to be applied after a downgrade to 3.0.1 and CWM installation. Can someone point me to some tutorial?

Pre-rooted totally stock HC 3.2 ROM here. It's what I'm running at the moment.
http://code.google.com/p/acer-a500/downloads/list
First four rar files are the ROM.

Area you sure? I googled that version number and it seems a really old rom, the one used to root A500 in the first place...
Look at the date and description of this file:
http://vache-android.com/v1/index.php?site=files&file=56
Acer_A501_0.017.01_PA_ATT is a factory firmware flash, not what you are looking for. I think kjy2010 was rather referring to CWM_Root_Acer_A500_7.006.03_COM_GEN1, which is a rooted stock, but it's for A500 though.
I'm no cook expert, but by doing diffs between stock updates and rooted ROMs here, I'd say you can easily make your own, using Acer_A501_1.309.02_4.031.24_COM_GEN1 as the source.
- remove ./bootloader.blob
- remove ./recovery/recovery-from-boot.p
- remove ./recovery/etc/install-recovery.sh
- add ./system/apps/superuser.apk
- add ./system/bin/su
- modify ./meta-inf/.../updater-script:
- remove script stuff related to recovery installation (2 lines)
- remove script stuff related to bootloader installation (3 lines, and make sure to remove formatting of mmcblk0p4)
- add set_perm 6755 on su
- add symlink /system/bin/su to /system/xbin/su
- sign zip with signapk.jar (not sure if this is required by CWM though)
- install with CWM obviously
This is my own novice understanding of this, handle with care
Any experienced cook please confirm I'm correct ?

That's great... but since I'm just a power user and never did something like that before, I think I would need some more detailed info...
EDIT: well, I indeed thought it would have been harder... it seems I can find every step you mentioned. I just need to find Superuser.apk and su binaries, someone knows where to find them? Some confirmation would be great, though, since I'm waiting for A501 substitution and I'd like not to brick it just after a few minutes I get it back

Translated: post your rom as soon as you make it! ;-)

I was, and my bad, I didn't notice the 501, as this is the A500 forum, and not A501.
I know they're close, but still deserve their own forum.
A501 3.2 Rom nearly stock is available
Hi!
I use the A501 4.031.24 rom for A501 and it works great.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1232545
It's a repack and no big modifications.
At the moment i'm working on a repack of this official ROM:
Acer_A501_4.037.01_EMEA_TMPL
I think this is the newest A501 Rom.
If you're interested, i can send you a link for a try out.

Follow the link posted below by kesaloh13, I think I missed it but you can find 3.2 roms for A501 there.
This is certainly an awesome read and although its intended for the a501 its a great way to learn how to chop up a rom. XD

Get them from ChainDD: http://androidsu.com/superuser/
If you don't mess with the bootloader or the recovery, you are quite safe to rollback.

[ROMs][GPL] Tenzo's Stock "Plain" HTC 2.1 ROMs - 2.37.605.4 w/JulyOTA [10-01-10]
Many of my recent efforts have lead me to take a few steps back in discovering a few things (does that makes sense?). In working on fixes for 3GP Vanilla MMS and the 50% TWS "issue" I have put these together.
Should hopefully help others, especially those new to cooking that want an easy, trouble free base to start with (no "extra fonts" and no "updating" the JulyOTA manually).
EDIT: if you have "issues" with either wired or wireless tether, you can use the apk's attached below. (thanks Conap, bugger561, and T2Noob)
I have built all of these ROMs from the RUU and integrated the JulyOTA. All ROMs are deodexed. Information below:

SORRY BOUT THAT!!!
I have the same problem on Tenzo-Official2.1-JulyOTA-Root.
Why don't you just flash PlainJaneT2 which is total Stock with A2sd, and are able to enable JIT through a2sd with By typing "a2sd jit"
Everything works, on it is pretty fast for a HTC rom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=718092
Just wondering Why you made another rom thats already out there...
I didn't mean to take over the thread just curious what the difference between PlainJane and this.
Another question is if you tested wired tether?
Because if you just dropped it in the rom I CAN GUARANTEE that it is not working, thats why I didn't add it to the rom, And If you did get it to work can you tell me how you did it?
If you included SETCPU i suggest you take it off if you don't want to have problems with the SETCPU developer later in the future..... A Member has been kicked because he included apps that developers had told him to get rid of.
This has the newest build of 2.1 by HTC. And wired tether has been updated to work on the Eris and incredible. Plainjane, even though it is older than this and T2 is still better for those who do jot care about JIT or A2SD. I've tried both as well as this and jcase's Rom features the most free memory. I uninstall a lot of stock apps and then add maybe 25-30mb of market apps. Plainjane left new with 95+mb free. This and T2 leave me with roughly 70mb.

this is completely stock... no extra scripts, no extra fonts, no a2sd, etc. it's stock... with july OTA integrated and deodexed. that's all i did. can you point out where the other completely stock ROM with JulyOTA integrated is? If i missed it, i apologize. again... other than not trashing bootloader, recovery, etc, it's as "stock" as it gets. no symlinks changed in update-script, etc. again, this is the only stock ROM w/July OTA integrated that i've seen on the forum. did i miss something? (Official Obsession is close... but that requires you flash over the update. not easy for beginning cooks trying to customize a ROM... and it's not deodexed)
the "other" 2 ROMs are different as well... one is almost stock, with just latest ChainsDD superuser (root) added (no a2sd), with Conap's CFS kernel. the other is the same, with latest a2sd added (which allows the ability to add cache2cache as well).
i've enjoyed PlainJaneT2... and it is still my base for TT2.1. i've given full props to you with links and request even for donations in that thread. if i've upset you, again, i apologize.
also, no "extra" apps (setcpu, etc) are included... i know the rules

one thing you can do with a2sd 2.7.5.1 is run the cache on the cache partition.
adb remount
adb shell
a2sd cachepart
when it's done, it will reboot the ROM. pull the battery and clear dalvik (or else you'll get a few FC's when you reboot).
you can try the above with "a2sd cachepartreset" and it "should" clear dalvik for you... but it hasn't worked well for me

Why use this old 1.2 when the official 1.4 does it cleaner: http://code.google.com/p/android-wired-tether/
Perfect timing on this! My lady is techologically challenged and having a ROM like this is perfect. She kept busting my bawls about not having teeter... Every time I installed it via an APK it would always FC after a bit.
Edit this was on a different rom, so far only issue I've had with this rom is a FC when trying to auto-update google maps.

Guys,
Looks like the folks at the Modaco Advent Vega tablet forum are also using the VeganTab version of the ROM for our Gtablets. Would any of the ROMs on their rom download page also work on our Gtablets?
Here is the link: http://android.modaco.com/content/a...6486/advent-vega-rom-software-updates-guides/
Anyone know if any of these Vega roms would work on the gtablet without modifications? Looks like they're also using the Vegan rom that the developers here made for the Gtablet.

I just tried Big Ideas ROM in our Gpad...It works but its all in chinese, have to set language to english and wifi is broken. Other than that everything seems to be fine. Had to build a boot.img though coz the included boot.img wont work.
UPDATE:
Figured out how to change language from Chinese to ENglish and did a wifi patch. Everything is functional so far. Will do further testing and might release Big Ideas ROM for our GPAD. BTW, its pretty snappy
This Big Ideas Rom dont even need a market fix.
Have been using the the Big-ideas variations since 1202 on my Zpad. Have had no issues with wifi, lag and market. What I did was NVFlash Big Ideas ROM then made a GAPPS update with update.script to delete all Chinese apps then pushed the Google apps. This has been working out quite well.
I guess what Rothnic proposed about using Big-ideas as a base then add Vegan stuffs is heading in the right direction.
Rom 1.06.05 (VEGA) is the base foundation for VEGAn beta 4/5, FYI. A lot of this is intermingled.
I do like that link, as they seem to update it frequently.
I love the file explorer in Big Ideas rom. Does anyone know what app that is?

I'm confused... I thought that ZPad 3.0 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853310) already *was* essentially the vanilla version of the Big Ideas ROM, with the Chinese language stuff stripped out.
Thanks my understanding, as well.

There are so many roms for droid 2, like fission, that i want to use in my milestone 2, but see that mike and others try to port but doesnt work. But now, we have new roms and new oportunites...
=)
Is that port possible now (with leaked CHINA rom)?

Well, I'm still learning the basics of android building. As soon as I get my custom hijack for 2nd init working I will try to port CM to the Milestone2. Note that I'm not promising any dates. My free time is very short and I'll do my best, but I don't want to get under pressure because of this
I think a leaked unlocked bootloader would do the trick
Just jocking. As I see it, nothing has changed regarding custom roms, as the bootloaded stays the same.
But I am quite confident, that r2beta0 will have progress on 2nd-init soon.

I think we don't need the 2nd-init built specially for GB rom, since Defy's CM7 (and Droid 2/X's) still have the base SBF on froyo. Maybe if we exchange the boot.img and devtree.img from GB leak to the ones inside Defy's CM7 update.zip (don't forget to delete /system/etc/motorola/bp_nvm_default/pds_init too, or you'll get all that GSM problems again)?
Edit: Won't Apex 2.0 RC2 work on GB Mile2?

We need 2nd-init in order to change the boot sequence required by CM7. DroidX already have a customized 2nd-init for CM7, but I don't want to use it yet as it uses bootscripts inside a /system/etc/shadow-boot.zip. I prefer to have my files ready to edit and not inside a zip file. Also, trying to make my own hijack is giving me knowledge I will need when trying to port CM to M2.

Hm... Okay, nice! So we have a better coded 2nd-init.
PS: If you need to unpack a boot.img to get the scripts/zImage, I got it with dsixda's Kitchen

Hi guys,
Searching the web, i found a oficial port of MIUI for droid 2, than i think: "Can we port this version with the ch kernel and change the baseband?"
If its possible, i think that this way is more simple, however port a defy rom and fix the incompatible bugs...

We should check first if this ROM is compatible with the kernels we have available. If so, we can try to port from that. Some ppl into Development forum are already trying to do that.

It is more difficult to port from a CDMA device. If you achieve Apex Rom to work with GSM network, then you can think about porting it.

Hey guys, a new ROM has just released on Dev Forum, click here and see by your self!!!!
One maybe stupid question:
Can I install this rom on froyo or should I first upgrade my MM2 to GB?
There´s what u have to do (didn´t test yeat, I will try at night. But u can always downgrade with a stock SBF):
** Make u sure of your phone is rooted before everything !! **
1. Download all-in-one.zip and put into /sdcard/
2. Download and Install Droid2bootstrapper (old CWM) from the internet/market
3. Update to Ported Defy CWM (there´s a thread in general forum explain how to install that)
4. Boot into CWM and apply the all-in-one.zip and after (without reboot) make a full-wipe (make u sure that u have maked a backup of everything before)
5. At this moment, reboot your phone and use the keys combination for enter in bootloader mode
6. Download the fixed_sbf from the original thread in DEV forum and apply with RSD lite.
7. Your phone will reboot and after some minutes, U Can Enjoy the new ROM!!!
I think I made a big mistake!
I touch everything and I'm going to Defy baseband! I change the parameter.
Since the network can not be found.
Any idea?
i will take a look at this

Strange..
Try that tread and if dont work, reapply the rom...
Good mod!
But does anybody know how can I get back low battery beep and camera sounds? I find them rather useful.
I got struck in "google" logo and the phone dont boot
how can i do factory reset in bootmenu from the CM7 ? i dont find this option there...
or even re-install all the stuff...
EDIT: i can't open CWM 4.0 from the BootMenu 1.0.2 , i try latest recovery or stable recovery but it says "error in /system/bootmenu/script/recovery.sh (result: no such file or directory)
Please help ! T__T
I can't post in thread on development's subforum, so I ask my question here:
where can I find a tool and howto to make my own custom *.zip file to use with CWM? I have found a tool called Android Kitchen, but readme inside archive says, that it is mainly created for HTC devices. Am I following a correct path , or I should search some other tools?
update:
I have successfully flashed my custom *.zip file based on information taken from www[dot]londatiga[dot]net/it/how-to-create-android-update-zip-package/
coming from miui, how should i update?
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=shakira
just saw +Steve Kondik posted this. but how to install?
Fxp kernel first, then cm7 :d
Downloading... will see what it is different form FXP rom
Do I need to flash kernel?
Can I istall the ROM with Xrecovery?
it should be available with ROM MANAGER!
Niiice!! Gonna check it out tomorrow!!
Sent from my X8 using XDA App
Downloading now, report in 1-2 hrs...
.sin
Folder has a kernel.sin inside
Did not install this yet, but...I compared the archive to FXP 030 and looks like the same apps. in folder? Even the thing that Radio.apk (or FM apk) is missing? ?? not sure what to say for now....
Ok, for someone who has no clue about how to install CyanogenMod (would love to give it a try to see if it's even more feature complete than GDX, if that could be possible, at all)...
Could some nice soul post up a "How to install CyanogenMod 7.1 in layman terms", in proper English, detailling the necessary steps?
I take it requires unlocking the boot loader as there's a Kernel in the ZIP file...
That step is already covered around here, how to go from there?

Wait, what? That's the FXP030 ROM?
And they are releasing that as a "stable" (*points finger at CM's download page*)?
Wow, I'm out of words ... seems the definition of "stable" is highly blurred nowadays. I wouldn't call a ROM that's lacking features (fully working camera / FM Radio, according to the "Bugs" in the FXP dev thread) as being a "stable" release. It would seem the "helping hand" from SEMC was rather useless or highly limited to the devices where SEMC themselves made Gingerbread available.
Knowing this I'll proudly stay with GingerDX, which is the most feature complete ROM we have for the X8.
Hi, At the moment i have a501 with a mod rom (taboonay 2.2) and my bootloader it is again 3.0.1 . I want to know if i will loose my old bootloader installing a mod rom like alexanderIII that it is based on 2.3.1.

No. Your bootloader should remain the same. You can flash away with all 3.2.x roms.
Just DON'T install a leaked ICS rom or you will get a new bootloader... The cooked ICS roms are OK, just not the leaks...

No problem. You can always go back to factory un-rooted just by installing a stock rom.in most cases anyhow. Let me know if you have any issues with the install.

Well, you can always post over at androidtabletgeeks. We don't have such limits. It's just a new site is all.
As with battery power, here is what I know.
Your battery life, is pretty much controlled by the kernel that is being used. This is not considering apps, and running processes which also use battery. But more so by the kernels ability to overclock (OC), and at the same time, use undervoltage (UV). UV is where you save a lot of battery when only concerning the OS itself. This is purely kernel controlled.
The object, or holy grail, as I say, is to find the lowest amount of UV based on CPU speed. At least UV enough to where you still have stability on the tab. Find the lowest amount of power required.
Here-in lies the problem. You only have 4 different kernel Dev's to choose from. And guess what? They all own a500's. And because of this, most of the newer kernels work fine on an a500, but with the 501, we get what is called 3g freeze or sleep of death. Both requiring re-boots. Sometimes you may go for a day without getting it. But it will happen if you use your 3g often enough. Some people aren't familiar with this, and just ignore it sometimes thinking the rom or app is messed up.
As with good kernels to use, I can say this;
1. Stock kernel (GPL compliant)
2. RichardTrip's 3.4 villain+ (current in rom) (GPL compliant)
3. Drelisdee earlier version kernel (GPL compliant)
4. Thor2002ro current version (untested and non-GPL compliant)
As with battery power, well, I can't tell you if Taboonay 2.2 compares. I believe Vache uses a RichardTrip kernel, just not aware which one. You can always experiment with kernels, as long as you follow the correct procedures.
As in roms, one would hope the newest version of HC would require a little less power to function. Just watch for the 3g freeze, usually when in the browser.

Don't worry. Nobody has ever made a paperweight from my roms
Just make a recovery backup of your current system through RA Recovery. Typically this generally provides some safety. I've never known a recovery image to be bad when running HC 3.2.x. It happens on rare occasions.
Only lately on the ICS "betas" have I seen some corrupted stuff.

Thanks for the comments!!!
It is probably because you are missing the 2 library files that are necessary for polaris Office to run.
I am at work now and don't have access to my files, so do the following;
Search the threads here at XDA, as you should be able to find a polaris office zip somewhere in either the dev, general or q&a forum. I remember putting one up some time ago (non flashable).
or
Download one of the Honeycomb 3.2.x roms that include polaris office, open the zip (do not extract it), then I belive in the lib folder, you will find the 2 polaris office lib files. They are easy to locate. Copy these into the same folder on your tablet. Then reboot and they should work.
As with DNLA apk, If you look near the bottom of my Rom post, you will see a link to a zip for the Acer System Apps. Unzip to your PC, and copy the apk you want, and also the Odex file. Copy to your tablets system/app folder, the reboot. Should work.

Well, generally, I use my Win7 to format my Ext SD Card to FAT32. As with PDF files, I run Docs to Go full version, and haven't noticed any issues.
If you format your SD Card, make sure you copy the contents to your PC First. Personally, I have 2 extra SD cards that I use. Always nice to have an original
