With the HC 3.2 update, I was able to hook up my external 1TB WD Hard Drive to my A500, however, I do not know if there is a way to safely unmount the drive so it won't crash when tried to be read again in my PC (something similar to the safely remove device app in Windows). Is anyone aware of such feature in the native ROM or an app that handles this? Thanks in advance.
Go to settings -> storage, scroll all the way down, you will see the option to dismount usb storage. Wait for a few minutes for the hard drive to stop spinning before disconnect the hard drive.
Thanks Man, that works...Do you know if there is a widget that can also do that?
Sorry I don't but you can create a shortcut to storage setting that provides quick access to what you want to do.

When connected to Either Windows or Linux I can't see the Add-in MicroSD card in the Acer.
The annoying Acer Sync app launches, and that will show me only main memory, not the expansion card or any usb devices plugged into the standard sized usb port. Linux never shows anything.
I know I can move things with a file manager, but Calibre can't move ebooks to a device unless I am able to map a drive letter to it, and Calibre for Linix at least has to see the device.
Under linux it simply never shows up.
Is there a setting in the Acer to tell it to simply show all storage?
Why so determined to move books to EXT-SD?

I'm not trying to be an ass or anything, but why are you so determined to put your books on the external SD drive? You have at least 16 gig internally, and most books take up VERY little space unless they are in .PDF format. Even a hundred books would take up next to nothing of the 16 gig.
Let your books stay on the internal drive and put the really big stuff - music, pictures, videos - on the external drive. If you do that it is unlikely you will fill up the internal drive any time soon, if ever.
Besides, your reader app probably wouldn't find the books on that drive anyway. We are hoping for some better functionality with the upcoming 3.1 release.
Have fun, and download File Manager HD. It works with network shares, making the USB cable almost unnecessary.
So, I have quite a bit of experience with Android, but this is my first 3.1 tablet and for the life of me I cannot figure these three things out...
*** EDIT: All of the sudden it is loading as a drive w/out me doing anythng, whereas yesterday it was looking for Asus software. The other two issues remain though... lol *** First, I want to plug it into my laptop as USB storage so I can copy over music and pics (wallpapers) to the MicroSD, as well as removed and save downloaded content. When I plug it in, I get no option to mount as USB like I do on Android 1.x and 2.x. It also doesn't show as a drive on the laptop. Since I get no option on the device I am thinking it isn't driver related, but maybe an option somewhere. I hope it isn't drive since I don't want to install one on this work laptop. lol Help?
Second, while the MicroSD is in the device there is an icon for it next to the time. Without unmounting the card, how do I make that icon go away?
And last, I have around 20gb of music uploaded to my Google Music account, but when I open the Google Music app it says there is no music on the device. There also is no option I can find to link to my google music account (which I thought should be automatically). My understanding, and how it works on Android 2.x, is that when I open my app it displays the music I have in that account online, but not on this one. Any ideas?
Thanks everyone...
Also, in case it's needed, this is the TF 16gb on Andriod 3.1...
I don't think there's any way to get rid of the icon. But with your music app make sure your gmail user address is right in the settings. I have too many addresses and sometimes use the wrong one.
As far as the MicroSD icon goes I believe that is an Asus addition to Honeycomb and can't be removed. I think it would be up to a ROM developer to strip it from the build.
As for the Google Music Beta, I have had similar issues. All I can recommend is going to the Market and making sure you have the latest version. If you do then the only other thing that has worked for me is trying a new ROM. I had no luck getting my Music to sync while running Prime 1.5 but with MagnuSupreme and Clemsyns ROM it has worked beautifully.
You can get rid of the icon if you are rooted. Just unmount the card normally, then mount in a terminal as root with 'mkdir /data/Removable/MicroSD && mount /dev/block/vold/179\:9 /data/Removable/MicroSD'. You'll need to unmount it manually and delete the folder when your done though.
Thanks everyone!
Hello Iconia forum! Seasoned Android user here, loving my new A500
Long story short, one of the main reasons I chose to get this tab over any other is the USB support. Having the ability to use an external hard drive was very important to me, and ended up being the ultimate dealbreaker vs. other tablet offerings. First thing I did when I got the A500 was rooted, flashed CWM, and threw on Taboonay 2.1b and richardtrip's kernel. Everything is great - still getting used to Honeycomb though, as it's a bit different than Android on phones, but I think I'm getting the hang of it. But anyway, one minor issue I'm having is concerning hard drive support. I have 2 external HDD's I wish to use. One has an NTFS filesystem (haven't had a chance to test it yet), but my main one is EXT3. While I'm easily able to mount and browse the drive, the problem I'm having is playing music and videos directly from the drive. They work if I copy them to the tablet first and play from there, but I would prefer to use them from the HDD. Is this even possible? If so, could it be the EXT3 filesystem causing the issue? Or is there some other app I need? I took a look around, but didn't quite find what I'm looking for. I'd like to know before I waste my time changing the filesystem.
TL;DR version - I want to play media directly from my external EXT3 hard drive. Is this possible? If so, how? Or will I need to convert the filesystem?
Thanks in advance! (I'll also click the thanks button when I get a straight answer )
Well I just got around to testing my second drive (NTFS) and it's working the way I want it to. Guess I'll have to convert my other drive. Mods can close this thread now. And in case anyone finds this in the future from a search, apparently EXT3 filesystems aren't fully compatible for external hard drives. Figured a Linux partition would be perfect, but I guess not...
I have had success with the 'USB Drive Launcher' app on the market. It will mount EXT3/4 partitions and set a mount point. I use the 'OTG' version. I have a 500GB 2.5" USB2 drive with EXT4 on it and I mount it and watch movies and read books while I am traveling.
The Acer software probably just doesn't know what to with the volume.
I also use a program on the PC called Ext2FSD which will mount EXT3/4 volumes in Windows.
that might be good to know, but I already changed the filesystem to NTFS and it's working great could have just been my ROM. Nothing was stock Acer. As EXT3, it would mount without problems and I could open most files, just media wouldn't play. But anyway, my issue was solved
Hi,
I am so close to getting this setup how I wanted - it's frustrating...
I have a nexus player - loaded kodi, side loaded NHL network, side loaded Amazon app - all that is working. I attach a 4TB USB drive (formatted fat32) and although ES file explorer can see it and Kodi can use it, I cannot get move to SD working...
I rooted it, I have super user working, I installed stickmount and ran that and tried using folder mount with no luck.
The external drive almost looks like it shows up as 2 drives...
When I unplugged the drive Kodi somehow cannot see it anymore when plugged back into the hub.
I want to be able to load this stuff up because this setup is getting taken to a camper where the only internet will be my phone as a wifi hot spot but I don't want to burn a ton of data - I want to use play later to add to the collection up there by just transferring new files on a USB stick, also use that to sideload any APK's up there.
Right now the unit itself was so full I cannot install anything more so I was looking for an app2sd option like my phone and used the (root, su, stickmount, foldermount way I read in several places).
I had to uninstall things just to install foldermount but if there are menu's on that I cannot access them so I can get to createpair screen and navigate to the place where you would populate destination, but once at that screen - there is no way I can see to save that - just has up (go back)... so I am totally stuck - been at it for hours - about to just take it back and build a small htpc but I really liked the idea of such a small device with the limited space I have at the camper.
I admit I do not have a good understanding of how Android deals with it's file structure and mounting drives / volumes.
Is what I am trying to do possible or am I asking for to much?
I discribed the only way i found that works here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61584727&postcount=158
Without the ability to install on an external location i think the nexus player is worthless.
Almost every good game is almost 2 GB shame on you google ......
8GB for a TV box is way too little without an external SD card !!!
I tried your way numerous times but it doesn't mount the 2nd partition, sometimes it doesn't see the 2nd partition, (intermittent) ...any ideas?

Hi all,
I added a 500GB HD to my Nexus Player and selected the option to make it part of the internal storage. Then I chose the option to migrate my apps to the HDD. Another way is to select settings/apps/devices and storage and change the storage location for that app.
Problem is, not all apps are being moved. Kodi, for instance refuses to move by both options. For moving it manually later, I don't even get the option to move it to the HDD.
Any advice? Currently running Android N DP5
Thanks in advance.
