[Release][Linux] ModeDetect USBID Detector - Hardware Hacking General

Introduction:
Sometimes a device's screen can be deceiving. black-screen, white-screen, -Phone--/!\--PC. All of these can be a download mode. Sometimes a black screen brick can actually be in a rare S5PC110 development mode where you can use UnBrickable Mod without a hardware modification. ModeDetect for Linux. It will work on any Linux based OS with Java installed.
instructions:
Install Linux on your computer. Install Ubuntu if you don't have Linux.
Ensure you have the latest version of Java.
Download and run the detector here: http://code.google.com/p/hummingbird-hibl/downloads/list.
Simply remove the battery, plug in USB and insert the battery
Try again while holding Vol+ and Vol-
Try using a 301Kohm Jig in the USB slot with the battery inserted then plug in the USB cable.
Results:
All you need to do is run it, and plug in your questionable device. If it shows anything besides the image below, then you're not bricked.

If it will only show the image above, then you can apply UnBrickable Mod, or JTAG to your device to recover it.
If it shows this, regardless of what's on your screen, you're in download mode:
If it shows this, regardless of what's on your screen, you can use UnBrickable Mod to recover it.
Currently the supported modes are:
S5PC110 (UnBrickable Mod)
Download Mode
Samsung Kies mode
Media Player mode
Mass Storage device
ADB debug mode
Samsung GMO Modem
Fastboot mode
Conclusion:
I hope this helps someone. Mode Detector is a simple app which looks at the lsusb device IDs and gives a nice GUI front-end for interpenetration of the results. This app should be the last thing you play with before you decide to open it, or send it in for repair.

Any ideas?

Could not find the main class: com.AdamOutler.UnBrickDetector.UnBrickDetectorApp. Program will exit.

Try redownloading it. There may have been something wrong with the download. It's a very straight forward program.

Ya the new Mode-Detector.jar worked fine.
Its just the usb + vm, not so much

Linux is the best primary OS. Everything works with Linux, at least to the extent that it can be passed to a virtual machine without problems

What VM Program are you using? VirtualBox? Also how well do most of today's games run on a VM Windows?

good luck getting decent performance in a VM for gaming (im not talking about facebook bejeweled, im talking about MW3, Black Ops, BF3, etc
gaming is the only reason i still have a desktop running windows
i use virtualbox on my windows machine for some vms
i use vmware workstation on my laptop (running ubuntu 10.10 64bit) to run windows 7 pro 64bit vm when i need it. i can do some basic gaming on there, but it would die if i tried to run call of duty.

That's what I thought =|

If you have enough memory you will not notice much of a difference. I don't. Install 3d extensions and allocate as many processor cores to it as possible. Enable all the options. Its a slight slowdown but nothing noticeable.
I have a quad core i5 with 12gigs of memory and a nVidia 200 series video card. It works well.

So I should be okay to run games like Dead Island or Crysis 2 in Ubuntu x64 or any of its variations with a VM Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my 3.2GHz AMD Phenom II 955 Quad Core CPU w/ 4x G.Skill RipjawsX 4Gb DDR3-1333 @ 9-9-9-24 and msi N460GTX Hawk GeForce GTX 460 w/1Gb 256-bit GDDR5 RAM?

i have to disagree. i noticed a huge drop in performance between native and VM.
Core i7 940, 8gb ram, 128gb SSD, 1gb nvidia quadro fx3800. its no slouch.
i also tried it out on my main desktop. horrible performance:
Core i7 920 12gb ram, 3-15k rpm SAS drives in RAID0, 2xati 6970 2gb, water cooled, etc, etc.
you cannot RELIABLY play call of duty/battlefield in VM without huge performance drops. sure, you can load up a game thats about 3 years old and play it no problem, drop your graphics settings down and probably play it ok, but i didnt spend all my money on hardware to to get only 'mediocre' performance.

Alright, I guess it depends on the game. Lets try to keep this on-topic.. This is a Linux app and you will need Linux to run it. Dual boot if you love Windows. Did the app work for you?

I don't love Windows I'm trying to find a reason to switch, but since I'm a Gamer I'm pretty much forced to stick with Windows (isn't that a Monopoly of some sort?) Anyways back on topic... Great work Adam I'm sure this app will come in handy for me in the future should the need ever arise
*edit* Decided to mess around with it and I've got to say you've done some nice work. Simple and easy to use with no room to wonder if it was run in the correct order or need to rerun it or click some button to recheck.

You will need JTAG or UnBrickable Mod. Its rare that the device will show up in S5PC110 mode with a black screen, but it is possible.

What about showing up as download or usb mass storage?
He said that its not finding the device at all.

Is that a question? You answered it yourself..
As stated before, this program leaves no guessing. If all you get is the Samsung logo, send it in for repair or fix it yourself.

This program as become a part of my flashing routine. I have it running when flashing via Heimdall.

Hi guys, hope you could help out.
Will running the resurrector and Hemdall be possible on a VM (Puppy Linux) as i am running windows and don't want to dual boot as much as possible.
Thanks in advance!

HDD comparison

Dear shift users,
As we are always talking about installing other OSes or drives, I think that it worths to compare different solutions.
I have decided to begin with the HD Tach software in version 3.0.4.0 with 2 drives.. the shift 40GB and a IDE 120GB 7200rpm over USB.
Here are the results :
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

}
and usb from the shift
and 6GB SD Card from USB .. I have tested with USB keys.. but 1 and 2GB is not good and 4GB is almost the same than this result
With the result, it does'nt seem that bad to install an OS on a USB drive. Someone has told me that it was possible... I will try to find how and to post it.
Regards
The koala.

yeah... really... I would like to get the HD Tach of people who have changed their drive.... is it possible? And it would be fine to precise if it is a 5mm or 8mm .. I will upload the post with news.. and try to make some graphics with comparison !
From memory, it's a 5mm but people have build 8mm in to it.
There is a thread about some where.
edit:
wonder what speeds the controller can handle...
Due to an apparent hard disk failure yesterday I tried to run a portable version of windows from a USB stick (actually a micro sd card reader with an 8GB card in it) to try and attempt some kind of recovery from within an OS but it didn't work so I'm guessing there's more to be done than just putting an OS on an external drive. I'll explore this more later and try to install Windows 7 onto an external drive, unless someone else beats me to it.
Luckily, my Hard Disk picked up again, but unfortunately had to go through system restore
Better that than having to buy a new drive though I suppose.

if you want to restore some data... you can use GetDataBack for NTFS.. which is able to read data that have been erased and formatted.. it's a great tool (but you need to pay the tool) which works like a charm !
added : SD card from USB
testing with a 1GB USB stick.

Thanks for that. There wasn't a lot on the drive anyway, apart from Windows updates. I really need to get round to slipstreaming my updates into the recovery partition (easier said than done I think ) and putting my recovery partition onto a bootable USB stick. Nearly lost it all yesterday.
A bit too close for comfort!

If anyone could give me a tip for taking a screen cap on the Shift as it doesn't have a PrtSc button then I'll put up the screen dump.
Stats from the long test are:
Random Access: 0.1ms
CPU Utilization: 0%
Average Read: 86.1 MB/s (although on the bar chart is says 95.9 MB/s)
- so about 3 times as fast as the original, and fantastic seek times.

Can you tell if it is a 5mm or 8mm ? I guess it is a 5mm (seeing H5 at the end of the number of the SSD) and how much you have paid for it?
Cheers !
The SSD was 5mm - slotted directly into the rubber shroud as a direct replacement and I paid $410 AUD delivered.
It is a lot of money for a drive smaller than the Shift came with But it is quicker for sure. Boot times for Windows XP Fundamentals was clocked at 17.5 seconds and Bootvis showed that it was the CPU slowing it down rather than the drive.
Re-installing OSes and doing benchmarks the drive got quite hot, so I am not really expecting any benefits with extending battery life.
More Charts
Adding some more charts showing Read and Access times
..and Random Access
I like these ones the best - big performance improvement here with the SSD

this "NO" is answer of which question ? 1 or 2 or 3 or ... 10 ?
1. Connect phone to PC and transfer file without install driver [live USB flashs] - First you need to change a setting on the usb connection and then it can be used as an usb flash drive, but I think it will still install drivers (but not Kies)
6. Lug fix package (application) work ? everything work nice after it ? - I didn't feel I needed a fix and so didn't install any.
7. Screen work like charm under sun - No, when I'm out I have to increase the display brightness and it isn't very easy to see, but I had the same problem with other mobiles.
8. Do make you happy i9000? Yes, very stylish, very light.
9. How much did you buy it ? Contract with Orange via phones4u.co.uk

Android IS linux. You don't have to install another linux distro on top of it. But the answer is yes, you can (but it will slow your phone).
As for the driver, you need to install the phone drivers to your pc before you mount the phone. Nokia did the same. Any smartphone does. The only difference is that because of android-linux, you have to mount the drivers before you can use them.

I'll also add, you might like Linux, but Android is Linux, and standard linux distributions are horrible for phones. Remember, smartphones require that applications can be killed at any time to run efficiently. Meego would probably be the only other open Linux platform suitable for phones probably, but that is intel only I think (i9000 is ARM).
The question is, do you like Linux because it is good, or because it is open source? Because there seems to be a whole army of users pushing Ubuntu and other Linux distro's, even though it often isn't the best choice for them (desktop linux distro's still have serious usability issues). What's even more of a surprise is that open source advocates are clinging to Linux, rather than BSD..
Anyway, someone has apparently gotten Ubuntu running on them, but don't expect a nice experience. Android already uses Linux, and is better suited for mobiles (furthermore, most of the i9000 software/drivers/environment is open source)
Everyone agree this is the Android phone at this point in time?
I think so .

That isn't a good reason.. Even on windows you can switch the standard desktop and perform heavy theming if you wish to do so..
And frankly, I'm sorry to tell you, the Linux kernel isn't THAT great. Since it's open source, it never evolved to allow many drivers to be backwards/forward compatible like Windows. Also, since it's GPL, it is impractical for some device developers to implement drivers (since some devices are mainly software based)..
But yes, Android DOES use Linux, but I strongly urge you to take a deeper look into the situation.

Did you wake up late yesterday and miss the several other posts about this? Clearly if you think it "works perfectly," this post doesn't surprise me, lol. It won't transfer any file except the formats it wants you to transfer, it doesn't integrate well with iTunes aside from music, and it puts movies in "Videos" directory, which is completely counter to everything Android does... a good early beta, but certainly far from "perfectly"

I haven't gotten my Tab yet, but will this be essential if I am to root via my Mac? (i.e., will adb connect or see the device on the Mac without the new Kies beta?)

Ok, so once I get my Tab how will I be able to root it, given that I only have an iMac?

Not sure, you should probably ask that in the rooting thread. I'm fairly certain ADB is generic, but the drivers might not work for Mac to enable your mac to be able to ADB into your Samsung. I have always used Parallels or Vmware Fusion to install windows and handle all my rooting needs. There's better support on the forums for windows rooters, so I just use windows on my mac when I need to root.

Not a bad idea for a worst case scenario. I already have Parallels on my iMac so I suppose if I had to I could use that...its just I'd have to relearn the ins and outs of rooting since I've always used the Mac side of things for rooting, and it took me forever to get the hang of that.

Well the process is the same, but before you can connect to a usb device your computer has to have the drivers... and Samsung is a bit different so it can be a little more challenging to get it to recognize the device. I hear people do it I'm just not willing to take the extra steps needed when compared to just booting into winblowz.

So you mean you hear of people getting it to work on a Mac only what you're saying is you find it easier to just use Parallels instead?
And on that note, if I did do my rooting via Parallels I would still need to acquire the drivers for the Tab from Samsung, yes?

So I had another member in another thread reply to me about this topic saying he/she suggests getting a copy of Windows and using Boot Camp rather than Parallels, saying that he never had luck using Parallels for this sort of thing. Did you ever run into any difficulties in this way (i.e. getting drivers to load, getting devices to be recognized, etc??)?
fyi...I installed this on my mbp and while transferring some avi's which were about 800-900MB in size, the app would repeatedly crash on me.
Afterwards, i tried to copy about 800 pics from my mac to the tab using kies and midway through, the app crashed again.
The way I got around this ''feature' is I started copying files in increments of 100 pics. this went fine.
With regards to the avi, the file copy was successful on my 4th attempt.
before the 4th attempt, I rebooted my mac and also the tab just to be sure...
suffice to say, I'm glad I did not buy the tab for myself. The person I bought it for owns only win xp pc's and my hope is that kies behaves much much better on a pc than on a mac...

Never really had an issue, you just have to understand how port virtualization works, and how some devices want a more "real" port so you have to establish the connection, set as default to parallels, then re-establish that connection. Parallels will never be as solid as installing windows and natively booting to it, but it's pretty good.
Mine pissed me off for the final time today, so I returned the tab. I love the device, love the idea of Android on a tablet, but I just can't do it with it being so early in it's development. Not having 1-click sync with iTunes, and easy support of a wide variety of movies without having to convert just kills it for me. Maybe in 6 months I'll try again.
still a beta
After I transfer a word document from mac to SGT10.1 via Kids, I was not able to find that document in NY tablet. Does Anybody know where it might be?

Well I just received my tab, and Ive tried connecting and carrying out the instructions in the "Retail 3.1 CWM Recovery, Root & full back up" thread, but I've run into an immediate problem - after getting into APX mode, then plugging in via USB, Windows XP in Parallels is not recognizing the tab (it isn't showing up in the device manager). I know APX is successful, because I got a popup on my mac asking where the APX device should be opened (either in Windows or on the Mac). But unfortunately in the device manager it is nowhere to be found. Any tips or tricks on making this happen? I really know nothing about port virtualization
i'm so screwed up. i thought they never had the problem solved so today i finally installed boot camp. then i opened windows web browser to download it and saw the word "for Mac". I feel such a shame for myself. but I am indeed happy about that lol. DAMN. I am so depressed for my dumbness.
is that normal to see "GTxxxx doesn't support firmware update" ??

Does an equivalent of i-FunBox exist for Android?

I hate the way MTP in general is so slow and clunky on my Windows 7, and my Wifi is a crapshoot much of the time so wifi transfer solutions like AirDroid don't really do the trick, especially with large files.
It's quite astounding that a program like i-FunBox for my old iPhone 4 can transfer files back and forth across phone and PC at blazing fast transfer speeds, when I thought Android had matured enough to do exactly the same.
I know there's an official transfer program for Mac, but what about for Windows users? I'd rather do all my transferring through a USB cable and with the speedier transfer connection that should be possible without having MTP in the way. Isn't there anything that could read/mount an ext2/ext4/whatever filesystem as easily?
Maybe I need some special drivers....
What USB port type on the machine you are using? 12 or 3 ?
If I connect up in mass storage mode mines rocket fast...

Windows has terrible ext4 support. I'd suggest you install a beginner distro of GNU/Linux. GNU/Linux usually uses ext4 by default so I think you could figure out a way to mount your nexus from there. Haven't personally tried it though, so I don't really know if it's possible, but it's a better shot than using windows.
If you're a beginner to GNU/Linux, I'd suggest a distro called Gentoo. It's the best of the best for beginners, so install Gentoo now.

Seriously though, if your Wifi is crap, you can try to create a Wifi hotspot with your phone (assuming you have a capable phone), and use this network for file transfer.
Gentoo is complicated as hell! There is no GUI setup to install it, you need quite a lot of linux knowledge to install and use gentoo.
It is a 'beginner' distro in a way where you do learn a lot about linux with it, that is, if you want to. It takes a lot of time and effort though.
The actual beginner distros are Mint and Ubuntu (go for LTS (long term support) with ubuntu, the latest version is buggy as hell).
Mint is based on ubuntu, so software and tips, tweaks for ubuntu also apply to mint.
If you want a distro just for the sake of syncing with N7, go for mint. It's lightweight, fast, and quite simple to use.
Be careful if installing on SSD, you need to make some adjustments: google 'mint/ubuntu ssd'
I have had a Jail broke iPhone for 2 years and often use i-funbox to transfer files as I hate iTunes. I recently acquired my nexus 7 and love being able to just open it as a drive in My Computer (I use XP). I was astonished how much faster the nexus transfers files. A typical 750 mb file will take 15 mins with ifunbox but 1-2 mins with nexus (I think my XP box only has USB 1.0! it is ten years old).
Transfer using my iPhone hotspot is also impressively fast....I use ES file explorer to browse shared folders on the XP box.
(I have tried to get Ubuntu running dual boot on the machine (it has a32 GB drive so just about room) it worked OK, but I had difficulty with the drivers for the very legacy Nvidia graphics card, which i'm too much of a Linux noob to overcome). We will meet again, Linux, we will meet again,...........this isn't over.

Have you tried DroidManager?

Android 4.x in Windows 8.1 - How?

So I gave up my Android Tablet which was stuck on Android 2.3 and got myself a Lenovo Lynx K3011W tablet with Windows 8.1 on it.
My initial idea was to install Virtualbox on it and then install Android-x86 within a VM. I've done this successfully on my Windows 8 laptop.
So, after installing Android-x86 from the ISO here (android-x86-4.0-RC2-s103t.iso), the VM boots and lets me do things. However, the touch is way off. If I tap in the center of the screen, the tap registers in the center of the VM. If I tap about an inch off center, the tap registers about 1 1/2 inches off center. 2 inches = 4ish VM inches and so on.
My questions here are: Has anybody done this before? Should I use a different ISO? Should I give up?
System Specs:
Atom Z2760 1.8 GHz
2 GB DDR2 SDRAM
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator
64 GB Hard Drive
Windows 8.1
Fullscreening the VM not an option?
Although that might require a keyboard unless you perhaps set virtualbox to load straight into fullscreen (havent checked possibility of this before) and then shut down android from within the VM to get out of the VM.

I haven't found out how to yet. I've tried to follow the guide below and several others to do so but haven't figured it out.

I have been using genymotion along with some other posts on xda I have gotten that up and running pretty well. Still uses Virtualbox and you have to enable ARM Translation in order to get most apps off the play store.
The touch screen is pretty accurate on my samsung 7 slate running windows 8.1.

I used this to install Android (x86) on my HP laptop running Windows 8. It installs fine, and my laptop can see the other operating system. It just can't boot (missing grldr.mbr). You could try using it. I don't know of its compatibility with Windows 8.1 though.

That is changing resolution. Not what I meant.
On a standard virtualbox install you can hold right control + F to switch from the VM running in a window to the VM being full screened like a game.

When I change it to full screen, the resolution is still the same so I still have the issue.
Android IA?
Has anyone tried this yet? It looks like these guys have taken what the android 86 project started and have advanced to the windows 8 tablet environment. The latest iso boots using UFEI instead of the conventional boot process. It appears that the Dell V8P has this capability. You can read more at: https://01.org/android-ia/downloads/2013/android-4.2.2r1-ia0.
I am waiting to get my USB otg cable and sd card to attempt this.
Cheers :cyclops:

Try this:
1. First, close your VM. Then, navigate to C:\Program Files\Oracle\VirtualBox\. Hold Shift and right click an open area of the window. Select “Open Command Window Here”. A command prompt window will open in exactly the correct directory to do the job.

2. Type VBoxManage.exe setextradata "Android" CustomVideoMode1 1366x768x32. You can edit the name in quotes to your virtual machine name (case is important), as well as the custom resolution to the native resolution of your display.
3. Restart your VM, and you can now select from the custom resolution you just enabled.
I would recommend using the BlueStacks if you don't rely on Android much.
Its simpler to install, doesn't need any partition changes, can run inside Windows, which means you get multitasking, Google Play built in, and recently updated to Android 4.0

I had installed bluestack in lenovo lynx in win8. It was working ok but very slow.. I think it won't go faster even if you install some other android emulator as long as it works insight Windows. So basically with atom we cant have playable android..
I haven't tried the last version yet but the version before was working but almost unusable.
