I'd like to root my Xperia Play but I don't want to fill out my IMEI and further details to SE as it will permanently void my warranty. I know it will void it one way or another if I root it, but least if I dont tell them about it I can just unroot it if I run into problems and still make use of the warranty.
So, are there any ways to root it without telling SE about it ?
Simple, just unroot. There is a Play and a Neo forum now too. ;-)

Woops my bad, I have no idea how I ended up in the Arc forum
Yeah .. Not exactly Play forum
But it should be possible to flash 2.3.2 firmware with locked loader and root then update OTA right? Like you do with Arc?
That way you don't have to unlock bootloader so SE doesnt know..
Unlocking the bootloader on xperia arc wipes out DRM certs too and they aren't back after relock (as far as i know) .. so once unlocked SE can always tell i guess..

Hello,
I have one quick question: Is is possible to update your firmware via SEUS in the future, when your bootloader is unlocked?
If so, is root (when accieved ) going to be lost during update?
Thank you,
Linkin
The bootloader has been unlocked by SE not by a XDA dev on purpose, they will not punish you in blocking SEUS
SEUS upgrades will not unroot the phone or else your voided warranty because of root will be unvoided, SE will not give you this kind of gift
as SEUS checks some data on preupdate state yes it is possible if you are on stock rom (with/without root not dependant).
well - root is gone though after flashing SE Update as it rewrites permissions to defaults
Thank you guys!

I knew that it was unlocked by SE, but I just wanted to check
To be honest I dont see a reason, why DRM only works with locked bootloader... but nevertheless it seems to be that way (at least I read it... dont have DRM content since I am against DRM...).

is it possible you did a misspell here? it should ONLY be possible if your are on stock rom, shouldnt it?
Or dont you mean the SE rom with "stock rom" but the original android rom?
But anyway even if you use a custom rom then let say SE release 2.3.3 update or even 2.4 you will have people here who will post a flashable update stock rom you can easily flash in recovery
It's even better and more secure than the online flash by seus (how many complaints about the flashing process freezing at some point with seus?)
ok thank you very much for your answer and your time!
Looking forward to test root on my device

ah well ^^
not type when you are thinking on sth else
corrected it
I have unlocked the bootloader, and tried to restore a proper image from SEUS (since i've messed up with a bad boot.img) and it's not possible.
SEUS gives me a message that it won't flash a phone that has a modified software.
mhm, thats actually why I asked maybe it detected a strange bootimage?
Well you can always backup your actual stock rom with a recovery before using a custom rom, just wait and see who is the good dev who will give us the recovery for Arc
how come SE release bootloader unlock for Xperia ARC?
while we got such a hard time on Xperia X10?
it noted there, my warranty will void if i unlock the bootloader.. sigh.. they release the unlock but void ur warranty? cheating
BECAUSE we got such hard time in x10 & people were demanding free bootloader
they flooded se on twitter, facebook, their blogs & support ^^
must have been some number so SE came up with solution
And now you have hundreds of people unlocking their bootloader and no one to Root it
comes time comes root
be patient, in a week or so we have what we need ^^
but it isn't THAT easy as we saw from z's atempts & since there is no exploit working on 2.3 we are lucky to have such "easy" way anyway
Hi fellows,
So far I find the common way to unlock bootloader is to require an unlock code from sony by providing IMEI no. And we will be warned that it will void warranty.
However, I am confused that so many fellows use custom rom. So is it ture that those fellows just simply don't care the warranty or they still have it?
I know there might be some other threads talked about this, but i just havent find the answer.
I do not know what the situation is in your country, but here, sony isn't responsible for my warranty. They cant void it.
Still, i haven't seen anyone brick their play permanently yet. so the risk is low and the gain high.

i meant, for sony, if i understand well, we need to request unlock code from sony by giving the imei of device. i guess they may have record of this?
or is there any easier way to unlock bootloader? i am new to xp, and my previous anroid device doesnt have bootloader lock.

Well, lets look at it objectively.
They say: "Warning! If you perform this step, you will unlock the boot loader and which may void your warranty."
correct me if i'm wrong here, but that doesn't sound like you just lost your warranty. It sounds like sony wanting to make you think you did.
I suppose that if you completely fry it by over-clocking to far, or mistakes flashing, thats your risk. but say a screen or button that stops working should always be under warranty, regardless of your bootloader.
When Sony published the bootloader unlocking page, they let things clear. Unlocking the bootloader per se doesn't void your warranty, installing custom software (such as rooting and custom ROM) will do.

Thanks. That is what I am looking for. So it should be very safe once we have nondroid backup.
Hi all
My XPlay is unlocked and i have not rooted it or used a custom rom.
What are the good and bad points if i unlock the bootloader?
I have no intention of using a custom rom(just wish they would release official 2.3.4 tho) dont care to root it either tbh(tho that could change )
Is it worth unlocking the bootloader?
Oh and have SE confirmed a date for ota of 2.3.4 yet?
Thanks
Jay
I would not say its worth unlocking it...
Cons:
Can't update (As fare as I know)
Warranty Void
Pros:
More freedom to do with your phone (Android offers enough anyway)
Thanks Craig.
Does the Bootloader have to be unlocked to root the phone?
No you don't need to that's all I have done to mine is sim unlock aswell as the bootloader ota and pc companion updater all works fine.

Rooting won't void your warranty and you can root here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859
Follow the guide and it will be safe, Also you don't need an unlocked boot loader for that root either, to be honest if you don't plan on using another ROM then don't unlock the boot loader, its pretty risky as the xperia play auto updates OTA.

Yep did this earlier and works great. Took me all of 5 minutes.
Root does void your warranty, because it's a software modification in the operative system that Sony doesn't support.
However, you people should learn to understand that your warranty and your technical service is XDA.

+1 but it depends how the warranty is worded, many people with the DHD got there rooted phone fixed because the warranty did'nt specifically mention software modifications
My brother said he was never going to root his phone, but then I showed him all the things he could do with it and now he can't believe he ever felt that way. I think if you looked into the possibilities a little more, you might change your mind too.
Unlocking the bootloader is another thing entirely. If you're satisfied with the stock firmware, then there's no reason to do it.
Thanks guys i might root when i feel brave enough
Hi guys
I don't know if this is common sense, but when I asked here, I was told my device would be bricked (can't update to newer software when they arrives like Android L). So this might not be helpful to a lot, but it is to me and might be to new people who seek info on their new device and still want to make sure they can update.
I just wrote to customer support and asked if their was any way to update my device with an unlocked bootloader. They told me that I can't update from phone, neither from PC companion. But was told I was still able to download Flashtool and update my device from there.
So hope I helped someone to make sure it works!
When ur phone is bricked u cant update, only thing u can do is to give it to your dog to play with.
But its right with unlocked bootloader u can update via flash, cwm ect which u should do anyway or what would be the reason to unlock it.
IThe only thing u loose is the sony stock stuff like camera app and some more havent had time to read about.
Google the word brick btw

As I understand it you lose your DRM keys. Those keys are unrecoverable and reduces your camera in darkness and audio.
Why is there no way to root 4.4.4?
I don't understand how the Sony system works yet, this is my first Sony coming from HTC and Samsung.
Samsungs rooted like a dream without any complications, why is sony so complicated in the process?
Thanks

Rooting 4.4.4 is easy... as long as you do it the official way, which means unlocking the bootloader and losing your warranty.
People don't want to only gain root, but they want to do it in a way that Sony doesn't see it and this is difficult.
There are easier was of doing it. Downgrade to 4.4.2, root and then flash one of the ROMs based on .167. I have a locked bootloader and flashing either Niaboc's or Pandemic's ROM was the first thing done out of the box for me.

I'm honestly not fond of the process of downgrading and upgrading, so I was trying to know why it is so complicated and understand how it works, and trying to root it without the longer process.
but then if there's no other way, i terribly need Xposed and Titanium. so yeah.

Okay,
I don't have warranty anyways because I am in Egypt and rooting voids it here, so I bought it for $100 cheaper without warranty
My bootloader can be unlocked, I've checked.. how can I root it with the official way?
Thanks!
Downgrading is really easy, I don't recommend unlocking your bootloader unless you want to try kernels and CM like roms and dont mind losing bravia engine etc. Just download a 4.2.2 firmware, and flash it with flashtool, root it and then install recovery and flash the rom you like with (4.4.4).

Once you unlocked the bootloader (there's a page on Sony website which explains how to do it), you can flash a recovery or a custom kernel with recovery via fastboot. From the recovery you can then flash supersu.
But be careful before unlocking the bootloader. As said before, you might lose some functionality (like x-reality). I recommend you do some search on the forums.

Let me tell you something that may be obvious: Sony IS NOT Samsung!
In a Sony Xperia phone there is no risk of bricking the phone while downgrading or upgrading to root. You won't loose the IMEI and the risk of hard bricking the phone is almost non-existent. You can downgrade and upgrade as many times as you wish or need. I've been flashing my phones since 2011, and sometimes all night long. No joke, my Z1 got flashed at least twice a week.
At first, the Xperia world may look complicated, but trust me; A Sony Its the safest phone. Can be easily rooted, not like those HTC or Motorola phones, and even if you end up with a "brick"...It is just a soft-brick. Just turn it off completely and use Flashtool or PC Companion to repair it.
The Flashtool is a very easy to use tool. Our firmwares are file with the .ftf extension, and can be downloaded by the same Flashtool.
Since 2011 I've had HTC, Motorola, Samsung but I always love my Xperia.
Fun fact: its theoreticly impossible to brick a locked bootloader Xperia
+1 as a sony user i can agree flashing and downgrading is safe
