Hi!
Since last week I'm trying to run Debian on Xperia X8. I've already googled a bit and didn't found any information about this topic so I'm now trying the tutorials available for G1, Nexus One an Xperia X10 but with no luck.
Right now I'm stuck after installing Debian on my X8 running Floyo 0.30, because I'm not able to run it - after executing "sh /sdcard/debian/bootdeb" (of course as a root) I receive error:
chroot: can't execute '/bin/bash': No such file or directory

Did someone face similar problem ? Or maybe You got some information, that running Debian on X8 is impossible ? I would appreciate any help.
Thanks in advance,
Chris.

Hello again!
I fought very well since yesterday and today I can tell You guys that I think it is working . I didn't test it much, but I can log into Debian, so that's somthing to start with .
First of all please notice, that this is not my port of Debian Linux, I just followed instructions available at (link was here) and it worked for me so I'm describing the whole process so maybe someone else will use it.
Unfortunatelly I was not able to post links in this guide due to XDA-DEVELOPERS.COM policies. I apologize authors of guides/startup scripts for removing their homepages. I will correct it as soon as I will be able to post links in my replies. If You need the links send me a PM and I will send it to You.
The guide from the above link is for HTC Dream (I guess), but it is also working on my Xperia X8 with Floyo 0.30 (Thanks to Racht !). I'm not sure if it will work on stock Xperia X8 ROM, but You can try.
Please also notice, that I'm not responsible for any damage to Your software/hardware caused by this guide. You're doing everything at Your own responsibility!
Before continuing You must know, that this guide is only for ROOTed devices. You wont be able to do anything without root access.
Perform a full system backup via xRecovery before doing anything. It'll help You to restore the system if something will go wrong.
So, after the short intro we should get going with the guide:
1) First of all follow the instructions available at (link was here) to download the Debian package (I tested it for 750 version of this package, but I think it'll work for 1,5GB also - the only difference is in the space available in You Debian installation after running it).
2) After downloading run /sdcard/debian/installer.sh as described in the above guide. I actually don't know what it is doing, but it is important to run it from for e.g. adb shell (please remember to check "USB Debugging" in Settings->Applications->For programmers before connecting via adb shell). Why it is important to do it this way ? Because I did it like this and it is working .
3) Now, I don't know if this is really important, but looking on the startup scripts for Ubuntu from Xperia X10 I changed my startup script (/sdcard/debian/bootdeb) in the following way:
# Based on Saurik's remount.sh - modified by Mark Walker of
# Email
modprobe ext2
clear
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system

As You can see I only modified line:
mknod /dev/loop255 b 7 255

Because I was not sure if the loop2 device (it is set by default in this script) is free in Xperia X8 so I used loop255.
4) Now we'll proceed to the part which is causing the most of problems - Debian startup. The above guide for HTC Dream suggest us to run a command:
su
sh /sdcard/debian/bootdeb

In every terminal You are able to run (including Terminal Emulator for Android, adb shell etc.), but I'm telling You, that these methods will fail and will cause Your phone to reboot after few seconds. Don't worry, I shouldn't brick X8, but as I said I cannot guarantee nothing. Every single case is different.
I suggest You to install SSHDroid from the Market, run it and allow it tu run as a superuser, then download Putty to Your PC and log in into Your Xperia X8 as a root (with "admin" as a default password, unless You changed it) and run the command from Putty:
su
sh /sdcard/debian/bootdeb

It's done ! You're logged into Debian, now try to test the new environment, because I'm not sure what can be done in this installation .
I will now proceed to install VNC server in my Debian and maybe some GUI to access it later, but I'll post any new results if there will be some .
Hey guys id love to try this on my phone could one of you maybe make a more noob-friendly guide and also this should be on developement forum but awesome work guys

Hi !
I'll prepare something more friendly as soon as I'll have 10 or more posts . As for now I must tell You that it REALLY ROCKS ! I've already set up Debian to run as a web server with Apache (hahaha !) so it looks to be fully functional on X8. Now I'm fighting with setting up FTP server and soon I will show You my first web page set up on Android device .

I'll try to upload some screen shots and the most important one - the corrected startup script which will let You to run Debian without the trick with "SSHDroid", but directly from Your terminal emulator. I'll post the link to the thread on Development section in this thread as soon as it'll be finished.

Hi SpyderX!
Actually for normal user there's no benefit at all. Unfortunatelly I'm not a normal user and what I'm trying to do is to port aircrack-ng to Android.
Aircrack-ng is a WEP cracking utility which will allow me to wardrive a little bit . But to gain that I first needed to install Debian to recompile aircrack-ng for ARM so I'll be able to run it .

Well, I´m not a dev, but as I can see, you don´t need debian running on X8 to do this. You just need android sources and setup the environment to build your app, and then pack it as an apk file. The processor you may define it during the program compilation phase. (as a flag to the compiler).

Hi shtreber!
Unfortunatelly I didn't find any drivers for WiFi card in X8 which are able to inject packets or set up the interface in monitor mode, but I'm not the first one who had such idea. Debian on X8 is a very "fresh" topic, but on other devices like HTC for e.g. it is working since some time, so I think the developers will be able to prepare some drivers in the future.
As for the BackTrack Linux I think it should be possible to run this distribution just like Debian, because as I said in one of the previous posts it seems to be an "universal" way to run Linux on Android. There can be some minor changes which should be easy to fix. Only thing which will change is the debootstrap image of Linux filesystem which You'll mount into Android. I even found some information on the internet, where user actually ran BackTrack on his device. If I'm not mistaken it was X10.
Right now I'm preparing to run Ubuntu on X8. If I'll be able to do this it means that every distribution (which is ready to run on ARM platform like Debian) is installable on Android. I will keep You informed about progress.

Hi guys,
I'm really new here, I can't post in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=836022
I created a working ubuntu11.04 .img, with unity-2d. I don't know if anybody cares, it was funny to make.
It is just a minimal install with unity-2d and tightvncserver. Really minimal. Firefox, office applications, anything else DOES NOT installed.
However, you can install anything using apt-get install.
I installed wget and nano, because it was needed to configure the vnc. I plan to make a bigger one with all the programs and stuff installed. Maybe tomorrow. Or next week.
How to use: Unzip, rename to ubuntu.img and simply replace the original ubuntu.img with this one. Use root as user/nickname and ubuntu as password, as usual.
Download link to .img:
Download link to the other files needed:
Links tomorrow. "New" .img too.
If you are a mod and you're reading this, please move this post it the thread I linked in the beginning, or anywhere where this post is in its place.
-Sorry for my english.
Please help! Give me additional space by using my referral: http://db.tt/W0knUea
edit1: So, now I've got 10 comments, I don't have to write everything in separate comments. What I've done yet: make some simple script to automatically turn on/off the vncserver (1024x600, tab native res, I found it enough), and get tired of the resource hungriness of unity-2d. I mean it needs about the same CPU power (I guess) as the galaxy tab has, and it needs about 200MB RAM. But this is to run native. The VNC version is far from native, so it's slow as f..., I mean, very slow. Then I looked for a little less resource-hungry desktop environment, and I found lxde. I made an image with that. It's slow too, but much faster than unity-2d. I need to configure it a little more, to be more touch-friendly. And I want to do a few other thing, and write a how to make your own .img file thing. If you want to do it now, here some links, I will write about it sometimes.

I also suggest reading mount, umount and rootstock man pages.
This image works quite well. As with every VNC build, its a bit slow and Unity doesn't help that (even in its nice Unity-2d form), but if you want Ubuntu on your Tab this is a pretty sweet image. Ultra-lightweight, too. Nice work, OP!
Firstly, thankyou for not making 10 spam posts just to get this posted in the Development section, shouldnt take you long to get 10 posts under your belt in this thread then I'll move it into the dev section for you

Hi!
The SDK is not strictly necessary since you could use a Terminal Emulator to run the necessary commands but using an ADB shell is just bit easier sometimes. That being said, you should install the SDK if you ever want to do much with an Android. It's easy to install and very powerful.
And yes, write bootubuntu instead of bootlinux when prompted. I know what you mean
Allright, I went through it and now got it installed . But I can't see firefox nor any office application... How to access them? Also can't get into terminal to write 'apt-install' there.....

I'll write a howto tonight or next day or I don't know. I need to study to university too. You need adb or android terminal emulator (from the market) to use apt. Short version: when your prompt is "[email protected]:/#" simply do this command: "apt-get install firefox"
Just poked around a little. Now I know (or at least I think I now) what else I have to do.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/41806444/bootubuntu2
Cleaned up version of bootubuntu. Copy it to /sdcard/ubuntu and simply run it. You need to use the sh command, so type "sh bootubuntu2" in android terminal emulator or adb shell in /sdcard/ubuntu foler.
Oh, sorry I forgot to mention, this script only works with overcome kernel and rom. You shold modify the
mount -o remount,rw -t ext4 /dev/block/stl9 /system
and the
mount -o remount,ro -t ext4 /dev/block/stl9 /system
rows. Enter "mount" to android terminal to see your /system dir type and path.
Synaptic looks like to work, software-center doesn't even start.
To really enjoy full linux distros like this, one should have a swap-enabled kernel. Instead, kernel on the Tab has no swap, and if you dare open some large app, the lack of ram makes it slow and unresponsive.
This is the main problem imho.

Change directories to linux!
Code:
cd linux
CURL AGAIN!
Code:
curl -O http://archlinuxarm.org/mirror/touchpad/ArchLinuxARM-touchpad-2011.12-alpha2.tar.gz
Untar! (this will take a bit...)
Code:
tar xzf ArchLinuxARM-touchpad-2011.12-alpha2.tar.gz
Well... we don't need that tarball anymore, so...
Code:
rm ArchLinuxARM-touchpad-2011.12-alpha2.tar.gz
CHANGE DIRECTORY!!!!
Code:
cd ..
Unmount the linux directory:
Code:
umount linux
Reboot! (You may have to do this a few times, you may get errors... you may keep trying?!)
Code:
reboot
Love Thy Arch
That's it, you're done. I advise opening a terminal once you're booted and updating the system with the "pacman -Syu" command (it definitely improves touch screen a bunch).

had CWM, WebOS, CM9. still failed on many attempts to install from nova.
its best practice to doctor, install cm9, THEN follow these steps, will install perfectly! using right now
only issue im having is pacman command wont run, even with sudo, continuing to troubleshoot

I installed XServer and XTerm and Ubuntu Chroot, then got LXDE on there. It runs fine, but I used WebOS Doctor to make a 4GB EXT partition by editing a text file in Linux. I followed a tutorial to do this awhile back. Now I want to tri-boot the actual 0.0.4 Ubuntu, CM9, and WebOS. 1. Is this even possible? 2. Will the 4GB EXT interfere with anything and what do I have to do to that partition?

works just fine the instruction a perfect thanks
did try to install applications but no go anyone get firefox or chrome installed ?
unistall arch just in case arch sh
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/68908006/ArchUninstall.sh

anyone having problems with install can try this and then rerun the install instructions lol just saying hope this helps other people it worked for me but do it at your own risk
i just mod it from other distro unistall sh
run this from webos in terminal
cd /media/internal
cp ArchUninstall.sh /tmp
cd /tmp
sh ArchUninstall.sh
For anyone having issues with installing apparently, run "pacman -Syu". If it doesn't work, please post your output here.

Anyone tried this?:
sudo depmod -a
sudo gedit /etc/modules
sudo update-rc.d bcattach_srv defaults
sudo reboot
That is the fix for the UBU install, just checking to see if this works on a TP with Arch already installed. I just havent gotten around to installing this yet but want all my ducks in a row for when I do. Thanks.
This may even help the already working WIFI.
edit: After the second command, a text editor should open up. Add "ath6kl" without the quotes to the bottom of the file, push save, close the editor, and go on the the next commands. If the touchscreen stops responding, hold power and home until the device turns off and boot back into Ubuntu and try again. It's a known bug. The last command should reboot the device again. Boot back into Ubuntu and you should have working wifi and bluetooth.

HOW TO ROOT YOUR LENOVO IDEATAB A1000
<DISCLAIMER>
By attempting these steps, your warranty will be void. Even worse than that, it might cause crashes, freezes, random explosions, 2nd degree burns, or even turn your beloved tab into $100+ paperweight. What works on mine might not work on yours, so don't attempt if you don't know what you're doing. Do at your own risk. Corrections are welcome. I must admit that I'm not an expert, so any info I posted might be wrong, and I can't offer you much help. I'm not responsible for anything arising from the use of this how-to. I can only wish you good luck.
<WHY ROOT?>
- Without root or OTA upgrades (at time of writing, Indonesian customers still can't get it), you'll be stuck with ~500MB internal memory. That's annoying.
- You're stuck with the default IO scheduler (cfq) and governor (hybrid, haven't heard that one..)
- You have an incredibly large amount of bloatware you can't get rid of, in that already cramped up internal storage
- Did I mention freedom?
<REQUIREMENTS>
This method is originally used to root Acer Iconia B1-A71. Somehow I noticed that the two actually has the same chipset, MTK8317 (if it really was relevant ). So I tried the method, and through sheer n00b's luck, it worked like a charm!
Lenovo IdeaPad A1000-G --> 4GB storage, 2G/EDGE. This method haven't been tested on A1000-T/F, different storage cap (16GB, etc.) or other variants, but it should work with slight modification. Screenshots of my specs are attached below. Remember, proceed at your own risk!
A Linux System. Never tried on Windows or Mac. I personally used Linux Mint 15. The source post uses Ubuntu.
working ADB (android-tools-adb). You can get this from synaptics, apt-get, etc. If your system can detect adb devices, you should be fine.
Superuser Binary
Busybox Binary (You can get these two from the links on original post. XDA says noobs can't post links :'( )

XDA Member alba81, for discovering the method as acknowledged on the original post by entonjackson
All awesome gurus on XDA which I can't mention one by one.
<THE STEPS>
1. Extract the android sdk to your home folder, e.g. a user named Bob will use like /home/bob
2. Open a terminal
3. Now plug your A1000 into your machine and turn on Debugging Mode (Go into Settings -> Developer Tools, turn on Developer tools, then turn on USB Debugging Mode)
4. Now back at the keyboard of your Linux machine in your terminal type:
Code:
sudo adb devices
The output should be something like:
Code:
123456789ABCDEF device
If it's not, google for it. Somehow your Linux hasn't detected the A1000, although the android sdk for Linux brings all needed drivers with it.
If your device was found, congratulations. The adb connection between your linux machine and your tablet is intact.
5. Now extract the downloaded busybox archive to your home folder, in it there should be a busybox binary. So Bob does:
Code:
sudo ./adb push /home/bob/busybox /data/local/tmp
Code:
sudo ./adb shell
Code:
chmod 755 /data/local/tmp/busybox
6. You should copy the busybox binary into a directory where you can access it as a plain non-root user on the tablet. We need this binary. so we can apply unix tools like telnet, dd, cat, etc. But for now we need it to establish a telnet session between our tablet and our linux machine.
(This point is written on original post. Seems important, but as soon as I finished step 5, I can use those tools)
7. Dial *#*#3646633#*#* to enter Engineer Mode
8. Go to Connectivity -> CDS Information -> Network Utility
9. type the following command:
Code:
/data/local/tmp/busybox telnetd -l /system/bin/sh -p 1234
Advice from original poster: copy and paste it from the browser on your tablet, because dependent on which keyboard app installed, this can be freakin tricky. In the next step you will learn, why it's so important why this command should be correct.
10. Tap on Run. You won't get any feedback, so you will never know if the entered command runs properly or not. That's why you should make sure the command is ok.
Now we have started our telnet server on the tablet.
11. Back in the terminal type:
Code:
/data/local/tmp/busybox telnet 127.0.0.1 1234
If you now get an error like couldn't find busybox or something, then either adb push failed or you forgot to chmod, in step 5
12. Now enter:
Code:
cat /proc/dumchar_info
You should get a bunch of lines, try to find a line containing the partition named android
{..... partition list .....}
android 0x0000000028A00000 0x00000000020E8000 2 /dev/block/mmcblk0p3
{..... partition list .....}
13. We will create a dump of our android system. This is the point where different variants *MIGHT* have different parameters. This step is important, as wrong parameter will result in unmountable image.
Stop. Take a deep breath. If you're not familiar with dd, find a good doc of it. There's a plethora of them.
Get yourself a programmer's calculator (Linux Mint 15 has one built in).
Here's what you'll do :
Convert the hex number on the 3rd column into decimal. In my case (0x20E8000) will yield 34504704. Divide by 4096. The result (8424) goes to the skip parameter.
Convert the hex number on the 2nd column. In my case (0x28A00000) will yield 681574400. Divide by 4096. The result (166400) goes to the count parameter.
So the full dd command will look like :
Code:
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0 bs=4096 skip=8424 count=166400 | gzip > /cache/system.img.gz
Do a full sanity check before hitting enter! It will take about 5 minutes.
14. After it's finished we must make the image readable for adb, so we do:
Code:
chmod 777 /cache
and
Code:
chmod 777 /cache/system.img.gz
15. Leave the telnet, and then adb shell session by:
Code:
exit
Code:
exit
16. Now we pull our image by
Code:
sudo adb pull /cache/system.img.gz
wait 1-2 minutes.
It should be then located inside /home/bob. It did for me. If not, do a search . It should be a .gz, extract it right there (or /home/bob if it isn't there)
17. Now we need to modify our system image by adding the tiny but helpful su binary. Extract the SU binary to /home/bob.
18. We create a folder where we will mount our system image to. To create it do:
Code:
sudo mkdir /media/a1000
19. Now we mount it:
Code:
sudo mount -o loop /home/bob/system.img /media/a1000
if it fails, then you entered wrong parameters on step 13
20. Now we copy our SU binary to our mounted system image:
Code:
sudo cp /home/bob/su /media/a1000/bin
21. the su binary needs to have the proper rights to make it usable, so we 'suid' it with:
Code:
sudo chmod 06755 /media/a1000/bin/su
22. Let's unmount our baby by:
Code:
sudo umount /media/a1000
and because bob doesn't like a messed up system, he does:
Code:
sudo rm -rf /media/a1000
because he hopefully won't need it anymore.
23. We have to gzip it again to bring it back to where it belongs to. this we do by:
Code:
cd /home/bob
Code:
gzip /home/bob/system.img
24. So here we are now, we made it to the final Boss fight! The next steps are dangerous and should be performed with caution. We copy back our modified system image, which can brick your device, if you do a mistake! Enter adb shell again :
Code:
sudo adb shell
25. Remove the old boring image:
Code:
rm /cache/system.img.gz
26. Leave adb shell
Code:
exit
27. copy our cool new system image containing the su binary:
Code:
sudo adb push /home/bob/system.img.gz /cache
28. Enter adb shell again
Code:
sudo adb shell
29. Usually the telnet server on the tablet is still running, at least in my case it's been like that. That's why we can directly connect to the telnet server with:
Code:
/data/local/tmp/busybox telnet 127.0.0.1 1234
If this doesn't work, then obviously your telnet server isn't running anymore. So on your tablet if the telnet command is still entered (see step 9), tap on Run again and repeat step 29.
30. Now this is the most dangerous step in this how to (no it wasn't the mkdir one). You can copy following command to make sure everything is fine and paste it into your telnet session on your linux terminal.
<WARNING! SANITY CHECK! MAKE SURE *ALL* THE DD PARAMETERS MATCH THE FIRST DD (STEP 13) OR YOUR A1000 WILL TURN INTO A VERY EXPENSIVE PAPERWEIGHT!>
Code:
[B]/data/local/tmp/busybox zcat /cache/system.img.gz | dd of=/dev/block/mmcblk0 bs=4096 seek=8424 count=166400[/B]
After 1-2 minutes you're done, if your tablet or pc or yourself didn't catch fire, everything's fine.
31. Leave telnet / adb shell by doing
Code:
exit
Code:
exit
32. Reboot your A1000 via ADB, then exit
Code:
sudo adb reboot
Code:
exit
33. Unplug your tablet from PC
34. Install Superuser (No, not SuperSU, cause it won't work!). I personally use Superuser by ChainsDD, from Play Store
35. Be lucky. Your tablet and thus you are now free!
Don't forget to hit thanks, if this helps

have you chmod-ed the busybox (or is the chmod successful without error)? Try chmod-ing the /cache before attempting step 13. It seems that you still don't have access to the NAND device (mmcblk0). Have you updated firmware via OTA?

The original developer who posted the method (entonjackson) plans to integrate the method in the next release his toolkit, the Acer Iconia Toolkit. I think you should check his thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2240029

I'm not sure whether the stock kernel of our devices supports init.d, thus supports CronMod/Data2SD. Lenovo locked our bootloader, and currently there's no way around it. So I personally think, Link2SD method are the best option for now.
Let's give it several months until our dev gurus bring their miracles upon this device

in step 20, it appears you are writing to a /bin directory on the android system. However such a directory is not visible either through shell or the system telnet account.
Do I need to understand something else about android to make sense of this.

Actually the SoC is MT8317. For some god-knows reason Mediatek have made this SoC with signatures similar to MT6577. But somehow CPU tweaker correctly detects the SoC (MT8317). Maybe it's the CPU-Z bug?

I think you got it wrong. The write process does not take place on the device. It's on the loop-mounted .img in /mnt/a1000 on your computer (step 18-19). Cheers!

i've already tried but nothing , maybe can you send me a pvt message with a little guide for the installation?? p.s. i have a sdcard of 8 gb
I tried Linux on Android but it gives invalid argument mounting the loop device. Linux Deploy has an option to not use a loop device and install to a folder I think. Not positive. Try Advanced Linux Installer. That might work. It costs but it's way better than the free version. Try Standard Linux Installer first if you like.
Could you please add some note on how you managed to install?
I am trying with several options, but always get stuck on a "dd: permission denied" creating the volume
Z
I'll try to provide that info. What you're seeing likely means where it's trying to write isn't allowed. Try changing the install location to somewhere safe like /data/kali or something. Also I just found out the S5 won't do ext2 so if you're trying to do a loop device use ext4 if possible. Sorry I don't have more info at the moment.
I am having the same issue. What SU app are you using? I am using SuperSU, I read that SuperSU might be the problem but I do not know the conditions on how to switch SU apps. Hopefully we can find a solution.

Also here are screen shots of my errors, settings, and anything else I figured might be useful to you. Thanks for help in advance.
I think it's long overdue for a Galaxy S4/5 guide. I know tinkering must be done and there are several issues to negotiate. I've found scattered info here and there but nothing definitive. Complete Linux Installer or Linux Deploy. Either/or. The only way I've ever got Linux to work is by installing to a directory and doing a chroot into it and doing a debootstrap.
Please&ty.
Is the stock WiFi radio compatible with packet injection or monitor mode on the S5 that you know of? I never put much effort into the install after I had such as hard time initially, attempting to install it to my extSdCard.
Solution
Hi there, I tried to install the kali distro in a s5 (g900f) with de Linux Deploy v 1.5.5 and I couldnt, i downloaded the 1.4 and neither but with de v 1.3 I could make it!
So if you are having any troubles with the installation, just download a previous version from the project's github (here)
Hope it helps!
